Deathkitten
I am the Deathkitten! Fear me!
Somehow, Illia felt embarrassed even in this dire situation. The boy was carrying her without a second thought. He even announced their arrival by saying he brought a friend! Smoke inhalation would be a problem, but as long as they could get out, it wouldn't be too damaging. Illia took the backpack and hefted it onto her own back so his hand could be free. Her expression was blank. Thoughts sprinting by. She could hear sounds of combat at the gate, but in another direction towards the forest as well.
If these arsonists were a trained group, that meant people were going to die.
"Eric. If things go south," she whispered in his ear, "Run into the forest. It will be harder for the attackers to follow us there. I don't want to leave anyone behind, but neither of us are combatants, so we'd only get in the way since they'd try to protect us."
Just outside the gate, the men that had made it out and tried to fight the bandits were struggling. Several of them had died. Some were still scrapping with all their will to save their wives and children. As the group of civilians made their way out, the focus of the free bandits - those that hadn't run off to see what was going on at the carts - shifted onto the women and children. Helping the elderly move along, they were too slow in this situation. It was like the bandits were waiting for them to try to leave.
Bodies already littered the floor, some decapitated, others with gruesome wounds that sucked and bubbled before going silent.
Illia fought back a gag, hiding her eyes for a moment against Eric's back, "Convince your mother to run, Eric! We're gonna die!"
