Fandom Into the fire (1x1 MzHyde/Gallifrog)

Kay was as ready as she'd ever be and also nodded when asked if everyone was good to go. When she heard another voice she recognised come from behind her, to which she turned round and saw Rinaa with a brand new haircut and dye job. It was harsh, like her attitude, but she pulled it off well. She would have complimented her new do but she had a feeling it wouldn't sit well with Rinaa.. but she had to try and make an effort. "Nice do" she simply said, giving her a small smile to tell Rinaa she was trying to be better towards her.

She noted how the shade of purple echoed Elliott's latest dye job, one of which she remembered he did out of her suggestion. Something that Rinaa wouldn't have known. "Shall we get the show on the road then?" She asked around, changing the subject ever so slightly.

All three of the others were shocked at the haircut change, Jay espescially since she had only seen the teenager a short while ago which meant she had cut, dyed and styled it herself. John thought back to the picture of the mowhawked girl on the phone, was it Rinaa or was she imitating somebody else? "John looks like you've been knocked out of your position as top punk amongst us" Chas smirked, prompting a a half smile from Rinaa, which widened at Kay's compliment. "Thanks. This is my fifth version of this style, and I think the best out of them."

Everyone agreed with Kay's suggestion, stepping out of the cart and out onto the surface of Attil. The air was noticeably different, it had a different taste to earth air, but it was the same oxygen ratio as Earth's, so perfectly breathable. The mountains surrounding them were beautiful, Rinaa reaching into the pocket for the phone she didn't have, wanting to capture it through the lense. Jay locked up the craft, setting the systems remotely and making sure the hull was secure.

The shocked looks on the others didn't go amiss to Kay. She could only imagine how shocked Jay must be the most having spent the most time with Rinaa during this journey. Unlike John, the Mohawked girl in the photos had gone from Kay's mind. When Rinaa's smile widened at Kay's compliment and didn't give her a snarky reply, she felt like she made a step forward with her. A small step yes, but it was a step nonetheless. So Kay took it whilst she could.

As the others left the ship, so did Kay. She looked up at the environment and found it more mind-blowing now she was standing on the planet than when they saw it from a distance. She noted the similarities and differences in the air to earth but was glad it was still very much breathable to them. Glancing to her side, she saw Rinaa seeming to grab something that it looked she didn't have and it suddenly dawned on her, it was her phone. Turning to John she nudged him before whispering, "think she wants her phone back".

John saw the movement too, but unlike Kay, he didn't put two and two together and successfully make four. Nodding he pulled out the phone from his trenchcoat pocket and held it out towards her "Hey kid, you dropped this the other day. Dunno if it works" He only realised as he spoke, that none of them ever called her anything other than 'kid' to her face after finding out who she really was. Maybe they should do something about that and ask her what they should call her, but he figured now was neither the time or the place. But he would ask. Eventually.

Rinaa took it back, hesitantly, not quite trusting John not to have gone through its contents, and questioning if it would even work due to the condition of the screen. But it did, and she was relived. If questioned she wouldn't admit it, but there were photos that meant a lot to her on it. Seeing that she t it was indeed working brought a half smile to her face for a brief instant. She unlocked it and turned to photograph the landscape.

It was Jay who noticed the woman heading towards them first. She was dressed in grey jeans and a plain blue-grey shirt with runic script on the front, with a jacket slung over her shoulder. Her left arm had a custom leather and metal forearm gauntlet strapped on to it. Her hair was dyed purple, but different in style and colour to Rinaa's. As she walked close to them she brought up a hand as if to brush the hair behind her ear, but decided against it. She seemed maybe four years older than Elliott. "Let me guess, you're the people who want to get Qui'Za'Lott back" Her English was accented, but with a different dialect to Elliott's.

Kay purely guessed that it's was the phone Rinaa wanted. Her guess was made by adding the scenery and her rummaging in her pocket together. That and she toyed with the idea herself but decided against it for some unknown reason. So when it got proved her hunch was correct she felt quite smug with herself. She saw how hesitant she was to take the phone back from John. She would have said they didn't spy through it but that'd be a gigantic lie, and she was trying to get on the kid's good side.

She noticed the woman walking toward them after Jay had and she noted the hairstyle and colour. It seemed purple of various tones was a popular colour to have on Attil. The short bob cut of the hair was cute Kay thought but not something she'd think she could pull off. She couldn't imagine being brave enough to cut her hair short. She was also certain that her phoenix blood would just grow her hair out instantly anyway, just like it did when she'd attempt to dye it.

She noted her accent also, wondering exactly where she came from before she nodded in relation to Cliff's question.

"That's us, the merry band of morons" Jay responded. Chas and John confirmed this, recognising exactly what she meant by her choice of words. Jay sussed out the pilot as she drew closer. Cliff's sunglasses were perched on her forehead, revealing her eyes to be (bar the gold and silver flecks) the exact same shade of green as Rinaa's. "Good timing on your part, forty five minutes later and I'd have been out starting a ten hour shift." As Cliff spoke she had to refrain from gesturing withe her hands, instead focusing on adjusting the arm gauntlet.

Up close Jay could appreciate the craftsmanship that had gone into it, clearly it had been custom made and fit. But she was unsure to it's purpose. It wasn't for blades, that much was obvious from the lack of slash marks and it certainly wasn't for guns either. Cliff had no piercings and the only jewellery she wore was a diver watch and a single, simple ring made of a various brown red and gold metals. "So we'd best be going then" "Yeah, let's go, follow me, leave the ship, it'll be fine here, and ye can't collect your stuff later" With that, Cliff turned and starting walking away from the ship.

Seeing Cliff's eyes, Kay noted how they were the exact same shade of green to Rinaa's and it didn't matter how many people she met with that type of iris, it still fascinated her. Of course, she'd never say anything outwardly but she still thought what incredible eyes everyone she met ended up having. When she spoke, Kay noticed how she was refraining from talking with her hands, she wouldnt have really noticed, had it not been she sometimes did the same thing when she got passionate about what she was saying and she had to try and stop herself from talking with her hands aswell. It made her remember the reactions Chas and John gave her when she went on a bit of a rant and her arms were more expressive than her words. The gauntlet was just as impressive as everything else about Cliff. It almost reminded her of an archery one but not quite.

She stood up straight a bit more as she always did when she was ready to start walking. She walked side by side with John as per usual but behind the others. It was just where she thought her place should be. Not up front, but not right at the very back either. Equal to john and Chas. She was intrigued to see where Cliff would take them and to see more of Attil. She also wondered how Rinaa knew her and knew she was trustworthy.

Jay walked with Cliff, the two switching to a more comfortable language than English. Both of them had learned English as a second language, and Cliff had been speaking it for the benefit of the others, knowing full well that not all of them could speak Attili. Their conversation mainly seemed to consist of talking about spaceships and pilots, judging by their gestures. Rinaa was unsure where to place herself in the group and ended up walking halfway between where Jay and Cliff were and where John, Chas and Kay were.

The path took them past the single person fighters, Jay and Rinaa both reaching out and unashamedly running their hands along the sleek hulls, admiring the craftsmanship beneath their fingers. As was customary all the ships were assigned to one particular pilot, who chose the name inscribed on the side in runes, kanji or whatever other writing method the pilot felt was suitable. One was even named in binary.

The route took them across a metal suspension bridge, spanning the gorge between one flat-topped mountain and the next. Below was a fast moving river, with lower bridges made of rope and timber spanning it. Cliff's card and presence was enough to get them into the base itself. It was built on a mountain that had been half blasted away leaving behind a sheer vertical wall of rock a few kilometres high. Viewed from the other side the mountain would look perfectly normal. The building they were interested in was an imposing metal and concrete structure, built into the towering face of the cliff. "Bloody hell, did they chop a mountain in half just to build this place?" "Yup they did"

Kay spent the entire time observing everything around her. She felt like she had to note every detail she came across, from seeing the single pilot aircraft to the inscriptions on the side to anything else she could see. She also noted how Rinaa felt a bit stuck in between the groups, not really fitting in with any of them and she felt bad. She felt like that when she first met John and Chas and Elliott. She felt she had to prove herself so much. She toyed with jogging ahead slightly to walk side by side with her.

She walked gladly feeling like she was on some kind of bizarre tourist tour or something. She glanced down at the flowing river below them before looking up above her. She didn't think she'd ever get over the views she was witnessing. Especially when John questioned if they chopped the mountain in half just to build all this. When Cliff confirmed it she nodded impressed and shocked. She really felt like she'd seen and heard it all up til that point.

Her attention then went back to Rinaa and how she was walking with no one in particular. She was going to take the plunge, if she told her to go back to John she would with no arguments. She jogged ahead slightly to walk beside Rinaa, "you okay kiddo? I wanna apologise for our...let's say strained aquaintence so far" she told her quietly so they could hopefully talk in private.

"Actually they chopped the tops, sides and dug tunnels through multiple mountains, and rerouted a couple of rivers to make enough room for both the barracks, the area, the pilot living quarters, the ship parking and of course the blacksmiths, leather workers, armours tailors and weapons makers. Actually, the whole city down there" She gestured towards the pieces of the main city that could be seen through the buildings. "the one Qui grew up in was built there because of the whole trade opportunities presented by pilots." Cliff explained, unintentionally launching into a geography and history lesson.

Rinaa's aviators masked the surprise in her eyes well. She had been eavesdropping on Jay and Cliff as they were having a far more interesting conversation, while taking in the views. Even though she had seen them before, they were impressive. She ganot been expecting Kay (or anyone else for that matter) to join her. "Considering I nearly killed everyone on board, then nearly died, I guess I'm holding up okay." She didn't look at Kay when she spoke, her gaze fixed elsewhere.

Kay had listened to everything that off was telling them about the history of the place and the geography. It was all so incredible to her and really felt like it'd be something that fit into the types of books she'd read. It was truly beautiful with the varying styles of architecture and surroundings. Yet it all fitted so perfectly at the same time. She was looking forward to seeing so much of the place whilst staying on track with the mission at hand of getting to Elliott and getting him out of here.

Then Rinaa willingly replied to her with an answer that didn't surprise Kay one bit. It was such a typical Rinaa response. "Right..Rinaa I'm so sorry you had to go through that, I really am. I'd also like to start over if you want to aswell." She told her. She had no idea if either John or Chas were tying to eavesdrop at their conversation or not, she wouldn't be surprised if John did out the two of them, knowing how curious he was. It took a big move for Kay to go up to Rinaa and try and make amends considering when they first met she wanted to punch her lights out.

"So how did they do all this?" Chas and John had moved up towards Cliff, the former very interested in learning everything he possibly could. "It started with years and years of planning. This is a planet full of people with crazy powers. So that certainly helped speed things along, plus they hired outside contractors. There are other aliens that basically make a living out of giant construction projects like these. It still took a hell of a lot of time to complete. Which is why multiple bases were built all over the planet, to try and spread the work and the wealth somewhat equally."

Rinaa was steadily getting more and more shocked. She had to resist from adding some acidic remarks back, trying to remind herself that this Kay was different to the one she knew. Unconsciously she started chewing on her lip, revealing that despite the Omega she had been dosed with, the long canines had stayed, as had the puncture marks from when he teeth ripped through her face. The marks would be permanent. She knew that Kay was probably only bothering to try because she knew Rinaa was dying. And she hated being pitied for it. "I can try, but I can't guarantee it working" There was more she would have liked to have added, bit decided against it.

She noticed out the corner of her eye how Chas and John stepped up forward more to learn more about the planet and the construction. She figured Chas was partly in his element of curiosity hearing about everything. Some of her concentration was still on listening to Cliff talk about Attil but she had to listen to Rinaa too. She knew it wouldn't change straight away, she'd be a fool to think otherwise. But she still wanted her to see she was trying to show her she wasn't the monster she thought Kay was.

Kay also noticed how Rinaa started chewing on her bottom lip and the marks that would no doubt forever be there from before. She could sense Rinaa was holding back and she had to give her credit for that. She was remaining civil for whilst they were in public. Kay appreciated that immensely. "I understand...please tell me if I'm wrong here, but I get the feeling you know a very different version of me. I'm sorry for anything that me may have done or said to make you dislike me so much but know I never go out my way to make enemies out of people... I'm not just making an effort because you're dying Rinaa. I'm making an effort because it's the right thing to do. I just want you to know I'm not as horrible as you may know." She explained to her.

"Why did they do all this? As a show of power, or was there some deeper reasoning?" John clearly had his thoughts on the matter, but since Cliff was far more willing to talk than Elliott had ever been, he was going ask. She considered "Well, I speak as a non-native of course, but yes, power and ego played a big role in all this. The Devra wanted to prove themselves as a race to be reckoned with, to be considered equals to species like the Kryptonians, the cybo-braniai, all those guys. And by building these bases, and creating both pilots, fighters and warriors of such high calibre, they succeeded. As a side effect they developed a top notch education system to feed the technological industry. More power means better trade, better resources and better allies."

Rinaa took her time before speaking. The wounds had reopened, and the blood was slowly oozing out. "different is an understatement of epic proportions." She didn't say what future Kay was like, knowing too much about the future was never a good idea. "But the fact that I am quite literally on my way to departing this mortal coil certainly helps. I'll try give you a clean slate, but I'm no miracle worker" She hadn't once looked at Kay during their entire exchange.

By this point, Kay had zoned out completely of what Cliff was explaining to John. She was aware of John asking questions and them lot talking but what exactly was being spoken, wasn't known by her. She was more focused on Rinaa at this point and she noticed how Rinaa couldn't even look at her. She wondered if she was so hated by Rinaa, then why did she save her? Why bother she could have just let her die and never deal with this evil Kay in the future.

The very idea of becoming so bloody horrible to someone unnerved her completely. She knew she shouldn't know what she was like but the curiosity just grew more and more. Hearing Rinaa say it was an understatement actually really upset Kay. She was going to be bringing up a daughter and she was now scared to death that she'd become the mother from Hell towards her own flesh and blood. Kay couldn't believe that Rinaa would say her dying helps matters between her and Kay. What could she truly have done or become to make her think dying was better than being round her? This whole conversation was going to haunt her greatly and she hoped it didn't trigger anymore sleep walking. "I appreciate at least trying...again.. I'm so sorry.." she said, deciding to leave Rinaa alone now, so she picked up her pace and walked beside John feeling utterly deflated.

"What about the whole name structure thing? How does that work?" Cliff knew why he was asking, and pulled a piece of paper out of a convenient pocket. She wrote a name on it: Qui'Za'Lott. "The first syllable 'Qui' is the birth name, the first name which everybody knows them by. The second syllable 'Za' comes from part of one of the parent's first names, this is used to distinguish between people of the same birth name. And the third syllable, in this case 'Lott' is the family name, the surname equivilant. When people marry they can either keep theirs, take their partners, or to stick the finger to their families, take a completely different name. Used in formal situations on this planet, buit in other cultures it can be a term of affection or endearment"

Rinaa just sighed, rubbing the dark blood away from the wounds. They probably needed stitches or proper healing, but she hadn't asked for either. "Bloody well done, you've gone and made it worse" she mentally berated herself. She knew she'd upset Kay, and should probably apologise or add context to her remarks. Despite how she acted, she didn't want to take her grudges to the grave but it was hard to let go. And honestly all she wanted to do was throw herself at a couch, put in earphones and avoid all lifeforms for the foreseeable future.

Kay tried to focus on what John was asking Cliff and listen to the answer he was being given. She had no doubt that it was truly interesting and would fascinate her but her mind just wasn't there at all. It was replaying what Rinaa had told her...or more to the point vaguely told her. She always prided herself on not being like her father towards people, to grow up with the ethics her adoptive parents taught her, but here was Rinaa practically telling her that her entire way of life and living was completely switched off and she became someone she hated towards Rinaa.

Her mind was racing with all kinds of fuzzy theories but none were vivid enough to truly pick anything out. She even thought back to her healing Rinaa as much as she could with Jay's help, and helped her to the med bay when she was having an extensive nose bleed before she began to turn, but even then, Rinaa was holding a grudge against her for something that hadn't happened yet. She was beginning to feel it was pointless. So she kept her head low and shoved her hands in her jacket pockets, trying hard to not let it outwardly show on her face.

By now they had reached the cliff face building. It was even more impressive close up, even if it was a prison/admin building. Cliff pulled out her access card once again, there was no problem getting in, the others on staff duty at that time simply thought that John & Co were with Cliff and gave little thought to the matter. The majority seemed to be pilots, but there were a few in various states of armourment that were clearly fighters. The new roster sheets detailing the next weeks worth of shifts had been posted, Cliff grabbed two as she passed by the files, briefly flicking through them. Judging by the reaction, they were okay.

It was then that Rinaa broke her silence to the group. "I'm not going to the cells. I'm starving and dead tired, Cliff mind if I crash on your couch?" Without her saying it, Jay, Chas and John knew that she couldn't face meeting Elliott for the first time in this state. The purple haired woman didn't seem to think this was weird at all, or if she did, she didn't show it. She pulled out a spare key, and tossed it at Rinaa who caught it, giving her address "help yourself to whatever's in the fridge, my other half won't mind" Rinaa nodded and left

Kay looked around, she certainly had never seen such a prison/admin building look quite like this. If she hadn't known she wouldn't have called it a prison at all at first glance. It amazed her that people didn't even look twice at the lot of them with Cliff and just accepted their presence. She noted the differences in outfits and figured out what job belonged to who just by how they were dressed. She didn't pay too much attention to Cliff flicking through papers she had picked up as it wasn't anything that she felt needed to be noted mentally.

Kay didn't even look at Rinaa when she finally broke her silence to the whole group saying she wasn't going to the cells. She didn't blame her for not wanting to see her father in the state she was. Kay only had to put herself in Rinaa's shoes to know she'd react the same way. She was pretty sure most people would. She did think it was kind of Cliff to allow Rinaa crash at her place and generally rest and eat. She didn't even look when Rinaa left the group, just kept her head down.

Cliff lead them away from the main admin area, and deeper into the mountain, where it began to take on a more prison like tone,. The security (both visible and not visible) increased as they headed into the mountain. The passage ways had been cut out of the mountain itself, and every so often there were shafts that allowed outside air to get in. Some of the tunnels closer to the outer side of the mountain had windows cut straight into the cliff face.

Once they were a suitable distance away from prying ears Cliff turned to look at them. "I know this is absolutely none of my business whatsoever, so feel free not to answer or tell me it's none of my business, but is the kid Qui's?" The question was aimed at the whole group, not just Jay.

Kay kept following beside the rest of the group that still remained, as they got deeper into the mountain it then looked more like how she envisioned a prison area to look like. She noticed how much more the security increased, mentally counting everytime she saw one. She knew they had plans to get Elliott out easily enough, so there's wasn't much need to count every security guard she came across, but she did anyway. She also found it was helping her to refocus her mind on Elliott and not what Rinaa said.

He attention turned to Cliff when she asked if Rinaa was Elliott's. She would have answered but she wasn't sure if it was her place to answer such a question. She glanced between the group to see if any of them prefer to take the lead in giving Cliff an answer of some description.

None of them wanted to answer, all praying somebody else would do it for them and get them off the hook. Jay felt it was better of John said it, and John felt it was better if she said it, while Chas decided it was better if he said nothing on the topic as it really wasn't his place. Which resulted in an awkward silence where they all looked at each other. "we believe that she is." was Jay's eventual response, not completly hedging her bets in one camp just yet, she was still sussing Cliff out after all. "the DNA test results came back inconclusive so they are being re-run."

"Well, she has the family looks that's for sure"
was Cliff's musing response. Internally she was thinking over the little of Rinaa she had seen. She didn't add any further context to what she said, just continued leading them through the tunnels.

She noticed how the others refused to answer, not surprised that Chas didn't answer, as like her, it wasn't his place to say compared to either Jay or John. She internally sighed when Jay gave an answer but still left it rather vague without all out lying. She had to give Jay props for how she handled the question. Kay did think that Cliff was being rather nosey personally and she wasn't sure she would have given her an answer at all if she was Jay. She no doubt would have told her to mind her own business like Clif said they were welcome to do.

She continued to follow Cliff with the others further into the tunnels and prison area. She really hoped this wasn't some elaborate trap to lock them all up, even if Rinaa did say Cliff was trustworthy. Kay was just suspicious of the whole thing partly, deep down she knew it should be okay, yet she did think back when they first met Rinaa and she said about how things would get s lot worse for them.

The tunnel began to slope upwards, at first the change in gradient was imperceptible, but it became more and more prominent. At the end of the tunnel was a door. "They're in here" The cameras around it had all been deactivated, to ensure that their coming and going went unnoticed. There were wards of some sort, not magical, something else, something more alien was protecting it, John could sense it in his bones. The door was set into the stone, which had been reinforced with various other materials, preventing anybody with the ability to manipulate one or two of the materials to work their way out. Cliff checked the door. Locked. It didn't take her long to gain access, she had the codes, card, keys and scans necessary to do so.

The door opened into a large cylindrical chamber. Each of the cells had been designed from next to unbreakable volcanic glass, containing minerals resistant to various forms of attack. The cells were arranged around a central area, where the supervising guard(s) spent their time. Cliff stood back letting them all enter ahead. There were only two people in the room, seated across from each other at a table. One was Elliott, still possessing a black eye that had now faded to a mottled spectrum of green, brown, yellow and purple. Sitting across from him was a woman dressed in what could only be official armour. It was black, with red and gold detailing. From the angle they entered from, black shoulder length hair obscured her face from view. Between them was a set of dice and cups- liar dice.

Kay glanced all around them noticing how it went from a subtle transition to a more obvious transition of look. She looked over the door seeing the wards. It was something she wasn't expecting, even if they weren't magical. She was too used to seeing such things on John's door for magical protection. She only guessed they weren't magical because of what she knew about their stance on magic. Glancing across she could see John was sensing its strength- whatever it was too. He just had that body language that told her so.

Once Cliff unlocked the door in the various ways, she walked in after letting John and Chas through first. She would have gone first but she considered it more important for John to go first. She looked around. She didn't know what she was expecting out of the cell area but she wasn't sure this was it. She noticed Elliott straight away and saw he still had the healing remains of his black eye that Jay gave him. She was happy it was finally starting to look better, even if it still looked bad. She noticed the woman sitting opposite him but not what she looked like. She wasn't expecting to see what seemed to be a game between them however.
