They were given one during their Enochian class, and more powerful spells require Enochian, hence why Leo was able to cast a large-scale transmutation on the sky creepy crawly and Ethan was able to do the thing he did to the first creepy crawly

like Fleetwood mack said, our current present day characters will get it during enochian language and literature. they are used for creating construct spells and in conjunction with personal magic. for example, Ethan couldnt use blood magic to contain the tentacle eldritch god so he used the tablet, same with his containment spell. so if there's something you can't do with your personal magic, consider the tablet a kind of workaround. but the catch is that for "first years" they can only use 1 word spells in that regard at first, and our future characters in the past are eigth years
