For some reason I am finding it difficult to think of a suitable response. Please clarify your statement and try again.

Over here we're seeing something distasteful with regard to our attitudes to American visitors. Local people are taking out their frustrations with the American government on tourists and assuming that they are all for the invasion of third-world countries and the like, and the result is a flagrant lack of hospitality.

There was recently a satirical feature in the UCC express, a college publication, by a supposed "American Idiot" (I'm contractually obliged to state here that I do not hold this view) complaining that "The people of Ireland don't understand our role as international policemen", in order to bring this new controversy to a fore and see it discussed. It was not made clear that the "author" wasn't real either, so as to provoke more discussion.

The consensus was that people were blaming the wrong Americans, though there was dispute over who to complain at instead. Doesn't help much in the end, Ireland is unlikely to be very welcoming to Americans for some time to come, unfortunately, although most are, as Jukashi indicates, liable to play friendly despite prejudice.

In conclusion: All people, of all nations, are stupid.

If everyone accepted that blanket statement of hatred, I imagine they'd all get along better.

Brothers in stupidity, Unite!

:P

Being an American living in the UK, I know that I am often the recipient of many people's views on Americans. Those views are often inimical. And, like you say, they often think I'm in step with those views. So it's not just Ireland.

Yea, but it's hipocritical of Brits to blame Americans for the invasion, as they're complicit in it.

Over here, our government is going over our heads and allowing warplanes to refuel in Shannon, and conveniently ignoring the "Extraordinary Rendition" planes being run by the CIA zipping back and forth through Shannon with abductees.

Fucking CIA bastards.

...

I'm gonna get abducted, aren't I? :(

Yes. And you're going to learn where the stories of aliens and anal probing come from......

Probing is the one truth, the baseline reality and understanding. It is the alpha and the omega. From probings spring enlightenment.

Well, there's rumours that the guru of all probers is a giant insect who uses a hard baked product like a small cake to do his probing. He calls it his.........

Probe-Biscuits......

Dear god, my eyes just ruptured in pain from that...

Like soggy-biscuit but crustier and more chafy-liscious.

A controlled substance over these parts, of course.

Is this off topic? I've lost touch. Too much probing.

Kinda like in America where if we see one Arab we think he's like all those other towel-headed terrorists and beat the crap out of him.

  This is what I get for leaving you people unattended in a thread...tsk tsk.

Jukashi--You've seen the American Irish, who return to Ireland, to see the ancestral homeland, that none of their family has been to for better than a hundred years, and who instantly want to connect with those roots, by  right of their blood, despite their muddied ancestry, family's long absence, alculturation as Americans, even if they are Irish Americans, and who demand and crave acceptance by the locals as returning lost scions of Eire, lucky to have them and theirs once again on your bonny, bonny shores.

Though, admitedly, these folks help pump up your tourist trade.

My own Mick roots are thinned quite a bit, by the German, the English, the Ogala, the Japanese, such that a visit to your shores would be a return of lost blood, by rumor almost.  Then again, I suppose, it could only add hybrid vigor to the gene pool, and thus might be welcomed, so long as I bring cash in sufficient quantities, and just keep my mouth shut about football, politics, and American beer...

My best friend, Neal, has no desire to return to Africa, even for a visit.  He isn't African, he's an American, born in Jersey, and any connection with the continent, was a looong ass time ago, when his family's neighbors sold them to some swarthy fellows for a trek to Tripoli.  While the low born Irish that streamed to America didn't have quite the bad go around as Neal's ancestors had for their trip, one might question a need to connect to the sod that one's family felt so neccessary to flee from to establish a new life away from.  I can understand wanting to make a connection with those roots, but it's an odd obsession with the American Irish--any experience from Australia's Irish?  Do they do the same thing?

It's mainly just something we see with Americans. I think it's because American people have such a diverse range of ancestries, they feel a greater need to hold onto any ancestry they definetely have a connection to. From what I've seen, and I may be worng, many Americans seem to have a much greater drive to identify with a particular group than people in other countries do.

Eh, I'm German, wee bit of Irish in me. And I really don't give two shits. I mean, I'd love to VISIT those countries, and maybe see if I can find out where my family started at, but not really "re-connect with my roots" in any way.

NEWS JUST IN: Have heard from recipients of the Scavenger Lands book. We've got a few theories folks. One of the write ups I think involves that Eclipse Lord of Creation dealy from the new STC, another (I shit you not from what I hear) Is something about one of the missing Maidens.

Juggernaut has stats. Magnitude 9 unit in Mass combat. Apparently...Juggernaut isn't undead...merely dying

Mortals and ghosts can become gods through Endowment like Mokuu from Pillar of the Sun and Talespinner was a mortal storyteller once.

Use of mind control is illegal in Great Forks. Police force made up of Gods and Elementals.

Apparently Thorns is still devoutly Immaculate, revolution against ol' Mask a brewin'. And the Thorns sewers pass directly into the Labyrinth.

Deandsor's curse revealed!

And Arad the Hunter is back and properly increased in power to remain a threat.

I can sympathize. I lived in Sweden for a number of years and it was nasty being an American there after 9/11 when it became clear that the US was going to invade Afghanistan. It became even more fun when invading Iraq became a real possibility. The sad thing was that it did not matter that I thought this second war was a bad idea. Swedes would still denounce me at dinner parties or gatherings for supporting the invasion, without asking for my views in advance.

Between the anti-Americanism and the difficulties that come with having a somewhat Middle Eastern appearance (1/4 Lebanese), I came to the conclusion that it just wasn’t worth it to stay there. Which is a real shame because I had previously enjoyed three fantastic years while stationed in Germany, and had been very much looking forward to fulfilling a long-time ambition of residing in Western Europe as civilian with plenty of time to travel and get to know people

Well boys, I think these are the Emissary write ups, will confirm Tuesday when my book arrives. They're a bit strange but they fit.

The Emissary has a number of possible examples given. Oddly, none of them are '3rd Circle Demon' or 'Soul of Gaia/Autochthon'. Instead, they're really, really odd. But cool. But odd.

1) Solar Eclipse Lord of Creation, Essence 8. Hides behind the mask to keep Sidereals from discovering him, survived Usurpation.

2) The Resurrected Man. The lover of a First Age Solar who tried to break the 'no ressurection' rule. It went badly. Now he's trying to destroy everything through tainted silver, and all the plagues are because of his presence.

3) The Sixth Maiden. In each Age, a Maiden must die and another must take her place. The Emissary is actually the Maiden for the Third Age, waiting for her time to come.

4) Tons of folks. The Emissary's wide array of powers is because everyone on the Council of Entities takes turn being Emissary, secretly.

5) A fraud. The Emissary is a god-blood with powerful backers and tricky illusions. Suckers.

These sound quite cool. I’ve heard some talk about the Solar lord of Creation in other places, but I wonder how these ideas would match up with the description of the Emissary in action, as presented in A Day as Dark as Night. We’ll have to wait and see, I suppose.

I like them all! They are my childrens!

Damn I want that book.. We were considering raiding denandsor in Batty's game, but we needed a ring of being to do it. Pop it on the right hand, skip and hop to the centre of the city, and turn off whatever's making people bonkers. First Age city a go-go!
