Fantasy Howl's Flying Castle (Finished! ---Whoo! (*^▽^)/)

Serena couldn't stop that happy grin on her face as the Sea King washed off the grim and sweat from climbing up the cliffs. Though she was confused as to why anybody would think he's a girl...or anything else really. Maybe her sense of genders is stronger than most? Doubtful since...you know...he's a Sea KING? King...as in guy.

"Thank you! That's really nic-! Ah!!"

"EEP! Johnny?!" Echo and Serena were caught off guard that the Sea King swept them with the offerings, surrounded by the cooling and refreshing waters. However Serena didn't look as nervous as Echo, having this impressed look on her face.

"Hmm...As expected of a grand spirit with the awesome title of 'Sea King'. The waters feel nice too."

"Serena-!" Echo yelled, disbelief written on her face. If she could move her arms right now, she would be shaking the blonde. 'Now is not the time to be impressed-!' is what she wants to say.

"I'm really sorry, Mister Sea King Sir, but-! Eep!" And down they went into the hollow and to the bottom, where they stumbled on their landing a bit. The sand is slippery and wet.

Serena looked up with a slight frown as Echo didn't know what to do at the moment. The fawn is staring back at Johnny, extremely nervous as she hears her boyfriend talking anxiously though a bit muffled from the water wall. She really hopes that they are not testing this spirit's patience. She really hopes not.

"Oh great Sea King, while I do appreciate being part of your offering and all, we cannot stay here. Our band is looking for someone and it's really urgent that we get there somehow for their help. We were told to go to you for guidance. Please you have to let us go." Serena said, bowing, urging Echo to bow as well, which she did, while pleading her case.

"We're really sorry for this misunderstanding." Echo added. "But the song is part of your offering, not us, Sir."

This is really bad. Really really bad. If this didn't work then...what can they do? They can't fight a strong spirit like the Sea King, it's insane and Serena only knows one water spell. She really doubts she can move the waters that are controlled by him easily.

"Hisaya...what do we do?" Serena asked the red stone quietly, hoping he would help somehow.

'Oh? You are not mine?' said the voice, and just as smoothly, encased Serena and Echo then pushed them back up the rocks. He seemed sad. 'I had hoped you will sing songs for me until you pass away. Ahhh, those with feet will always ever only be visiting me.' he said wistfully.

Johnny immediately held Echo's hand possessively.

"I don't know Serena, but he seems familiar." said Hisaya's voice. "Though I can't quite remember . . . Mizutsune . . . Something about Mizutsune . . . "

'Come! Sing one more song for me and I will grant you guidance.' said the Spirit, waves churning eagerly. And once he was satisfied he laughed again and splashed them all, cleaning them, before the waters calmed and he settled sitting on the surface, beckoning all of them to come walk and sit with him on the waters.

'What is it you seek?'

Lydia's calm and admiring expression became panicked as the Sea King tried to take Echo and Serena, her hands raising in front of her with her palms out and shaking side to side slightly as her head also shook side to side and her eyes widened. She glanced to Johnny as he spoke up and notified the water god that the two girls were not a gift and sighed in relief when he released them. Though she did feel sad for him because the fact that he only was ever visited must make him pretty lonely. She was glad that he wasn't insulted though and stepped up alongside the others, squealing slightly as he splashed them all and giggling a bit afterwards. She never thought that meeting a god would be so warming rather than intimidating, despite the fact that she had felt intimidated when he had first appeared.

Echo was so happy that this nymph is a nice one! She quickly walked up to Johnny and squeezed his hand, kissing his cheeks as if to reassure him and herself that they won't separate that easily.

Serena thanked the Sea King again, though a bit guilty that she caused the nice spirit to be sad and played a happy tune for him, one that anyone can dance to while Echo sang; though she stayed close to Johnny this time. Once they were done, Echo, Serena, and Chenglei sat on the waters after making sure they won't sink in.

The fawn asked. "Can you help us meet the dragons? The long ones? We heard from Mildpine that you were one of the few who can talk with them without having to fear them of eating you. Or do you know of someone with the title 'Aged Author?'"

Then Serena looked up at the Sea King with a wide smile on her face, excited that Hisaya does remember something about the water spirit. Which means-! "Do you know of a man named Suoh Hisaya? He mentioned something to me about a 'Mizutsume'?" Oh, the blonde was like a little kid in a candy store, the way she was swaying in place, back and forth. Her azure blue eyes glittering.

'Yes, I can. And no, though I know of someone who authors though she is young --- though very, very old by the standards of men.' The waters rose and the form of something with a large head, or was it a large mask? walked on the glassy surface like primitive man. 'She has a way with words the way the first stars did when I first came to be.'

The Sea King smiled, as though remembering pleasant memories. 'And yes, I knew of a man named Suoh Hisaya. Ahh, so that child has safely returned home. He looked like most of you, though he dressed like the dark skinned ones who lived in the deserts. Good, good, I hope his little one liked the boat I made him, though why he liked it inside a bottle I will never know. All ships are meant to sail my seas.' said the Sea King proudly. 'Mizutsume, yes, yes, she and her kin were the ones who taught his people how to speak and the name of things. He learned much from her, though she'd sometimes complain that for something so small, he sure does talk too much.'

The spirit mimicked Serena's swaying, then looked at Lydia. 'Are you human?' he asked looking at her interestedly.

Echo blinked while Chenglei nodded a bit, though grinning. A lady~! It's a lady that they might meet! How funny that Renee can hear the trees and yet they are looking for a young girl here...how odd actually. Are girls the only ones that can hear them? Doubtful...maybe...the oriental soldier pondered a bit as Echo sighed sadly. Knowing Serena...

So Hisaya lived in the deserts...'Where Seth is...' Serena thought wistfully before shaking her head, trying to focus. As she hears the Sea King talk on about how he made a boat in a bottle for Hisaya's son, the blonde clenched tightly on her violin's neck; her swaying slowly stopped. Her smile faded as her face blanked.

"...Y-Yes. His son was delighted to have that boat, Sea King." Serena started sadly before standing up and readied her violin again to play. She couldn't really say much, considering the circumstances. "...He returned home, yes, but...something has happened to him recently and his family...they passed away..." She walked a bit closer to the spirit, looking up at him as she played.

She played what she couldn't say out loud: her song started out happy enough, with that same dark tone she used as before to represent Hisaya with a light and playful note running around it. The playful note left with a fade while the dark tone went darker and darker, sounding angry and confused about something, but still straight forward. Then it became loud like it was screaming in pain before it calmed a bit, soft and sad while having pulses of intense anger...However there was a hopeful note that came in, intertwining with the dark note as if it was supporting it. The dark note softened up into a lovely low sound that slowly ended.

By the end of it all, Serena had tears hanging on her eyelashes. "Hisaya can't remember a lot of things in his current lifestyle...and I wish to help him recover some. I hope we can meet Mizutsume so that he can remember them." She said quietly as she looked up at the Sea King, her hand that's holding her bow went to where the red gem is.

"If..If you like, I can rely a message to him? I'm sure he would love to hear from you?" Serena asked, smiling warm and hopeful. She hopes that Hisaya took the hint and talk loudly for the Sea King to hear, acting as if this gem was like those scry mirrors but only for one person to connect. If not, then at least Hisaya heard everything from the Sea King himself.

The young witch was silent, simply taking in the conversation of the others. She had always been one to let everyone else talk and it seemed that they had been more in tune with what was going on and what was about to happen. Her gaze lowered to the ground and she frowned slightly in thought, her brow furrowing. She grimaced slightly and glanced back towards the Sea King when he mentioned Hisaya returning home 'safely' and turned her gaze briefly to Serena and the red stone whose occupant had been mentioned. When Serena played her song, Lydia swallowed the lump that had formed in her throat, while the blonde violinist hadn't meant it to, the way her music sounded at that moment also reflected her own feelings.

As the Sea King turned his attention to her, Lydia balked slightly, one of her feet stepping back slightly as a hand went up to her chest and her eyes widened, her gaze falling directly on him. She didn't want to feel like she was lying, but she also didn't know how many of the soldiers around them knew about her condition. Her gaze sadly drifted away from him as she bit her lower lip in thought before she'd step closer to the water god and motion for him to come closer. If he did, she'd whisper to him that she is Human, but her soul has been invaded by a black dragon's.

'A message? . . . ' The Sea King did not answer for a full hour, just sat on the still surface of the water, tranquil in his thoughts. 'It is nice to know that you still exist.' he answered finally. The red crystal around Serena's neck did not do anything, just remained as ordinary as any crystal could be.

The Sea King then turned to Lydia and melted away, reappearing from the water beside her. 'Ah, that answers the riddle.' said the spirit's voice in her head, in the same volume of whisper as hers. 'You are the first creature I've talked to who has another living in it, but the other has no form. Why haven't you pulled it out? It is feeding from the holes and cracks in your heart, soon nothing will be left.'

Serena nodded, smiling a bit as she reminded quiet, wondering if Hisaya is feeling sad now as he didn't glow brightly this time.

Then she watched Lydia whisper something to the Sea King, already knowing what the topic is. Considering of the question he asked of her. Echo looked on with a bit of worry while Chenglei continue to wonder who this young-looking lady could be...if she's as old as the spirit says she is.

A sad smile made its home on Lydia's full lips, her hand remaining in its place over her heart as she looked away from the Sea King for a moment before her gaze returned to him, worry across her features. She nodded her head in understanding before she responded in the same low tone that she wanted it out, but she didn't know how to remove it and the only way she knew of that would required an insane amount of manna and even then she didn't know if it would work. She then looked to him curiously, "c-could you... remove it?"

'Yes.' said the Sea King simply. 'Though you do not have enough food to eat until I am finished. You must bring enough for twenty-eight moons. The other inside you has woven itself like tangled strings through the gaps in your heart, I would need to take my time so that you will not lose more of your soul as I pull it out.'

The waters rippled and the great power sleeping in the ancient spirit reached out for Lydia's inmost self like small trickles from the cracks of a giant dam. Very small, only a drop it seems, yet the dark thing in her suddenly came to life as though it sensed its demised and loomed, flaring up within her, flooding her with all sorts of horrible memories.

'You are not needed! You are not wanted!' hissed the dark thing like a snake, and it spoke in James' voice. 'Hailey . . . Even her name sounds better than Lydia . . . He never said he belonged to you . . . he never belonged to you . . . you are small . . . lonely . . . needing him more than he ever needed you . . . he cannot give you what you seek . . . he will see that and leave. He is fickle, chasing one girl then another when someone better comes along . . . it is his fault, James' fault!'

In some twist Lydia was not looking at the Sea King anymore but James. 'Strike him! Strike the unfaithful cheater!'

Lydia's expression turned hopeful at the Sea King's words and she nodded before becoming thoughtful. That would be some time.. and in the meanwhile she wouldn't be able to help the others in their mission. She glanced to her friends that had made the trip there, considering for a moment that she actually wasn't that much of a help to them at the moment, she could barely hit things with her hammer and she couldn't use magic at all because of the sealing cuffs, she smiled slightly to them before turning her gaze back to the Sea King and giving a more firm nod.

She tensed as she felt the spirit reaching for hers and closed her eyes, forcing herself to relax and not fight it, but that was only until the more ominous presence filled her and urged her to fight back. Her brow furrowed and she grimaced as though she were in pain, her hand clutching at the fabric of her blouse as her eyes squeezed more tightly closed and stung from the tears that began to try and force their way out at the hurtful words, "J-J-James..." she gasped as she began to sob, "N-N-No..."

Both of her hands clutched at her chest and she slumped to her knees, shaking her head as she fought this urge to harm the one she so deeply cared about, her eyes opening to peer up at the Sea King.. who wasn't him, but James. Her eyes widened in surprise, tears streaking her pale cheeks, "wh-why....?"

Her hands moved to her head and she curled up in a ball with her forehead touching the ground, "p-please... stop... I c-can't.... I d-don't care!" she continued to sob, her whole body a tight little knot trembling on the ground, "I-I l-l-love h-him... I c-can't..."

The soldiers were looking up in alarm, and so was Johnny, thinking that the Sea King was attacking Lydia or something. For the spirit did not make his thoughts with Lydia known to others just as she was whispering to him.

'Allow yourself to feel your anger and pain.' said the Sea King gently, 'Accept them because it is safe. Yes they are yours, the other inside you is using it as a weapon, but holding them at bay will not make them disappear. Accept them because you know your pain wants to be listened to desperately. That pain is you, hurting, so come and listen and comfort yourself who is hurting . . . The one you love isn't perfect, is he? It's okay to see the truth and mourn . . . you will not lose security.'

The dark thing inside Lydia was raging. Something was grappling with it, trying to loosen its hold on her heart.

'Break it and it will not survive!' hissed the ominous voice. 'Talk to the cheater and you will see your relationship end! End it! You want to end it! Do not lie! You deserve someone perfect! Someone better will come along, and you will have none of this nonsense. None of this pain. His company is hard, complicated, uncertain. Someone better will come along. Tell the Sea King it is nothing. You have made up your mind after all. Do not be so weak. Happiness can be found in others and in yourself.'

She remained curled up on the ground, the two warring voices in her heart causing her more confusion than anything else. She tried to focus on the calm one. The one that was offering encouragement for her betterment and not words of spite. Removing her hands from her head, she placed them shakily on the ground and raised herself up slightly, nodding her head to the voice of the Sea King. She took in a deep breath and released it in a shaky tremble, her thoughts roving over James. She knew he wasn't perfect, she didn't want him to be. She wasn't even upset about Hailey. Yes, it hurt that she had thought she was the only one in his heart when it turned out that she wasn't. That hurt more than she cared to admit, but she embraced that, just like the Sea King told her and tried to drown out the distracting urges that the dragon's soul was giving her.

The sensation that the fight inside of her wasn't just her own anymore was encouraging. She shook her head, her brow furrowing in anger before she spoke more loudly, "no... no I don't want it to end... but I won't let you use me to destroy those I care about! You are weak! You know nothing but hatred!" she pushed herself up to sit on her legs, her hands once again on her chest as the distress she was feeling turned to anger towards the thing inside of her that was trying to consume her, "shut up!!! You vile lizard! Just shut up!"

Alarmed, the girls walked a bit closer to their friend who seem to be in pain about something and just knew-!

So Serena played her violin again, encouraging her fight back with her song while Echo rubbed her back and mumbled little things like 'You can do it!' and 'You're stronger than you think.' They can't really say anything about James but they do want to be there for her somehow.

And Chenglei? He stood over to where she was and lightly patted her head as if he wanted to ground her with care and back into reality.

The ominous thing quelled and retreated deep, deep to hide inside the smallest nooks of the cracks in Lydia's heart and did not resurface.

'Well, it seems I may not need twenty-eight moons after all.' said the Sea King's voice in their heads. 'Not if you and your companions help me as you did today. Familiar . . . familiar . . . the other inside you is familiar. Hmmm . . . '

He looked to the sun and saw that it had already set. Night was coming on and the night prowlers of the forest were starting to wake up. He let Lydia decide whether she wanted to continue straight or make camp with the rest near the pool. Making camp will make the process longer compared to if she stayed at the ring and let the Sea King continue to pull on the black dragon's soul without ceasing.

The meeting with Mizutsune and the long dragons can come tomorrow. The ancient spirit said that he will call her , but in return Echo and Serena must play another song for him. He did say though that Mizutsune may choose not to come. Dragons didn't like to be summoned after all, they want lesser creatures to go to them.

The comfort and encouragement Lydia received from the others did its job. She felt stronger knowing that while she had felt rather alone in fighting off the dragon, not telling the others the effect he had on her, they were all there to help her if she needed it. When the dragon retreated, Lydia breathed a sigh of relief. She knew that wasn't the end and that she hadn't seen the last of him, but just knowing he could be gone quickly gave her a renewed sense of hope. She had thought it would take much longer to be rid of the foul beast and was grateful she had thought to ask the Sea King if he could remove the dark creature from her.

She smiled graciously to the Sea King and bowed her head to him, "th-thank you..." she rested her hands on her lap and looked carefully at the Sea King, "h-his name... it's Valdanr.... the black dragon.." her lips pursed together tightly as she looked away from him.

When she was given the option to make camp or stay at the ring, Lydia of course wanted to stay, but after the long climb up and a restless, sorrow and thought filled night, she thought it might be better to make camp and rest so that she could be rejuvenated and have plenty of energy to properly combat the black dragon's soul. She chewed her lips anxiously as she thought because she definitely wanted the dragon soul out sooner rather than later and she was afraid of what might happen if she fell asleep considering the dragon knew that it was currently in danger of removal.

She turned her gaze on Echo and smiled, "Echo... do you have anything you could give me to give me more energy?"

Glad that Lydia looked better, even to the point that she can get help from the Sea King, Echo blinked a bit.

"Hmm...I should have something. Let me check in our bags and I'll come by to give it to you." She said, smiling. There's a chance that she might find the solution in her and Renee's notes.

The musically pair of girls agreed to the Sea King's terms, Serena looking pleased as punch until she went back into her tent and asked if Hisaya was alright and if he remembered anything else.

That night there were two camps: those who had been at the bottom of the colossal bowl rock or had gone back to the mysterious grove to look for Seifer and Renee climbed up and made camp under the floating shrine, while those who wanted to stay at the shrine made camp a little ways away from the Sea King's pool.

Johnny did not leave the ancient spirit, spending the hours talking to him about this side of the Storm Wall and learning the ancient elven language used in this land.

James was upset and worried sick that Renee and Seifer never came back, and still waited for them. Though after dinner, he hovered at the edge of camp, pacing, before he took a deep breath and walked up to Lydia.

"Lydia." he paused, waiting to see if she'd look at him or gesture that she wants space. "You, um, want to talk tonight?"

" Night time, Somewhere "

The smoke signals didn't work. Nobody came, not even the buzz of one of James' bees.

Seifer sat in front of the campfire carving a spear and a stick about the length of his umbrella cane. He was really worried now that they weren't able to get back to the others and didn't seem to be any closer to doing so. He and Renee had built a debris hut, they still had some food which would only last them until tomorrow, knives, something to catch and hold water, but that was it. Things like cordage had to be made from plants, but it wasn't good enough for bowstring. They'd need horse hair, or the dried hamstring of an animal. And the arrows, Seifer needed feathers and a heavy tip for them, but he didn't know how to carve rocks, nor did they have the tools for them.

At least he wasn't alone. He looked to where Renee was and smiled at her.

Lydia nodded to Echo and then waited eagerly for her return, hopeful that the fawn did have something that Lydia could use to help her in the battle against the dragon soul. She made her place somewhere between the camp and the Sea King's pool, considering the prospect of getting the dragon out of her sooner rather than later. A hopeful gleam in her eye.

She was running her hand along the grass, focusing on the sensation of the blades as they brushed against her palm when James approached. She looked up at him as soon as he said her name and gently smiled before she rose to her feet, "we can talk... but can you listen first?"

Zer0 Zer0 Katsuya Katsuya

Lydia didn't sit down, she only nodded and sighed slightly as she glanced at the ground for a moment, collecting her thoughts before speaking calmly, "when I said that you were the only one in my heart... I was telling the truth," she smiled weakly and placed her hand on his chest, "but I'm not the only one in yours... and that's okay..."

She shrugged her shoulders slightly and lowered her hand, "honestly... I wanted to break up... because... well I thought that... if there was someone else... it would make it easier for you to forget me," she glanced at the ground, her face locked in a smile that ached with grief, "I don't know, even now... what's going to happen. The Sea King says he can get the dragon out of me.... but even then..." she turned her gaze back to James, "if... if we can't get your father back... there isn't really a place for me at the castle when this is all over... I know my mother would want me to come home."

Her hand sought for his and locked her fingers between his when she found it, looking down at their intertwined fingers, "I don't think I've ever felt happier than when I was with you.. and as wonderful as you are, I am not nearly naive enough to think that there were not girls before me... Johnny pretty much made that obvious to me when he asked you for advice that one time," she laughed at the memory, but the sound was slightly pained.

"And I don't want to get ahead of myself since I am new to this whole... well.. you know... " she covered her face slightly with her hand that did not have hold of James', resting her palm against her cheek as she returned her gaze to the ground, "but... even if it's just... until.... until everything is over... and we are back on the other side... I still want to be with you," she turned her gaze back to him, her brow furrowed slightly and her eyes glistening with tears that hadn't fallen, her lower lip gently trembling, "e-even... even if I don't get the special place in your heart."

Zer0 Zer0

Renee sighed quietly when no one came over despite the smoke signal. Not even James' bees are coming. She's glad that she had the foresight to ask James advice on surviving out here or they wouldn't know what to do.

Seifer can't hunt without a bow and while she can try to carve one, they still needed a string for it, which they don't have. Their supply on food is not much either, so she went to look around the area they were in to find some but that didn't help as much. Renee only found a few of the same medical herb: one that helps with infections on cuts.

'At least I'm not alone...' Renee thought, smiling as she looked at Seifer. Her wings fluttered happily when she saw him smiling at her as well. She sat next to him, watching him carve the spear and pondered how everyone else is doing a the moment.

'Probably worried and angry at us.' Renee thought, already imagining their faces and what they will say to the pair. She doesn't regret leaving though. The normalcy of being a pair of teens helps calm her already stressed out nerves. Yes, she will admit: it's rather dumb of them to go off in unknown territory to be Woo-hoo-ing, but she rather be relaxed, do dumb things, and away from everyone then be stressed out and murder somebody in camp because of the dragon controlling her doubts again-!

Because there were a lot of times where she doubted herself, fearing that she let everyone down and into their impending doom. Only for Seifer to calm those doubts with his touches. It's like he's grounding her more than her lovely necklace or the pretty blue ribbon James gave her a few days back. The precious items help a lot too but Seifer's touches snaps her out of it when she's off the deep end and close to her panic attacks. He doesn't even realize it either or maybe he does and just doesn't say anything. Either way...she's really happy that she can depend on him and relax her anxieties.

"...Think the others are okay?" Renee asked quietly as she sat on her knees and braided his hair again, making sure she doesn't bother him while he carves the spear.

- James Pendragon -
" Night time, Sea King's Shrine "

James held Lydia's hand tight as he stoically looked up at the night sky, blinking too much. His expression had grown more and more crestfallen and guilty the more he listened, and by the end of her words, his hold slackened and he let go of her hand. He cannot hold it.

"I'm half-hearted. You don't deserve that, Lydia." He cannot tell her that there is a place for her in the castle, and it's not just her room or the library, it's with him, Sasha, Frey, Pond, Calcifer, Renee, and the twins. He cannot tell her too that even if she goes back home, he'll take the train and go to her every weekend while he finished his apprenticeship in the Academy, probably even ask her if she'd like to go to school there though really, after all this is done and they survived, he wouldn't be surprised if Lydia got multiple letters offering her high positions in wizarding institutions. Nor could he tell her that what they had wasn't just until everything is over and they are back on the other side. Because he realized that it's true, she doesn't have that special place in his heart. Until now he still clung on the shadows of his past and had not been able to get over it.

"I want to break up." he said in a shuddering voice, and the tears fell down his face and he seemed to keeping his fear down as he looked at her as steadily as he could. "Because I want to be all in or not with you, Lydia. I need time to sort my feelings out and it's unfair having you wait around for me." his hands clenched and unclenched restlessly as though he needed to hold something. It was obvious he didn't want her to leave, what if she won't come back, or what if she finds someone better? That's scary. Risking losing her.

But what was the alternative? Tell her okay, because he truly does want to be with her, and let her settle for less while he wrestles with his feelings he hasn't even sorted out yet, even though she's okay with settling for less? No.

Or maybe he was being selfish, wanting something better for her when she doesn't want it and just wants him the way he is. No, he'll be selfish. It didn't sit right with him. He loves her for loving him unconditionally all this time, and until now even though she's hurting, but because of that he wants to be a better man and give her what she deserves. So he has to sort himself out first.
