This ties into his back story about running supplies to other people. That group happens to recognize him and he ditched the group entirely to join the circus. One rule of being part of a group and being involved in their activities is that you cannot leave. The only way to leave is by death really,but they may just rough him up a bit. They're worried that mattie would snitch and tell the cops,so yeah. They're also pretty pissed because matthew didn't deliver anymore after he joined the freak show.
