Halfway Across the World

Kioko woke up in the morning, stretching her arms upwards. She covered her mouth as she let out a large yawn, staring sleepily at the wall. "Hmm, what time is it?" She asked herself, looking at her clock. "Hm, 10? I can go back to sleep then." She mumbled, closing her eyes.

.....

Wait? Wasn't Cayden coming today?

Kioko immediately bolted out of bed and towards her closet, grabbing a pair of jeans, a hoddie and a vocaloid t shirt. She tugged them on as she was running for her bathroom, brushing her teeth as fast as possible and pulling her hair into a chopstick bun as she ran to get her socks. She tugged on her converse, tying them up fast as she raced down the stairs and towards the door.

Cayden woke up with a start.

"What the- where am I?"

As he panicked in the darkness, he slowly but surely recognized the small, cramped contours of his hotel room.

Cayden yawned and slumped over again over his bed. The flight yesterday took everything out of him, later it was a nightmare to navigate the crowded streets of Tokyo. Why did he even come to Japan in the first place.

"Why did I?"

...

Attempting to jump out of bed, Cayden instead only succeeding in tripping over himself, ending up in a slump on the floor. He quickly untangled himself and struggled considerably in dressing himself. Fruitlessly trying to fit his melon of a head into the armhole of his t-shirt, Cayden spent a good twenty minutes in his room.

Finally out the door of his hotel room, he hurriedly checked the pockets of his pants.

"Map? Good. Keys? Good. Wallet? Good."

His pockets felt lighter somehow...

"Must be getting better at running" he thought with a grin, barely catching the elevator in time.

Kioko was out the door before she knew it, racing to the park. She had a piece of bread hanging out of her mouth as she jogged, her hair bouncing up and down as she ran to the local park. With a huff, she slowed down and sat on the edge of the fountain, trying to catch her breath. "Made it." She managed to wheeze.

Running as soon as the elevators door opened, Cayden immediately almost ran into a small child, a woman expecting, an elderly man and a very large dog.

"Sorry, excuse me, ooooh no, coming through!"

Finally on the outside of the hotel, he noticed he forgot to exchange his american dollars for yen, having only enough money for one trip to the park.

"Going to have walk home." He thought glumly.

Finally on the inside of a bright yellow taxi, he took a mental recap of his situation.

He looked down at himself, in his panic he had thrown on a yellow t-shirt, White pair of jeans and a purple jacket.

"I must look like such a tourist." He thought with a grimance.

He thought it strange that during all this time, he had not received one text from Kiouko.

Cayden checked his pocket. He then checked his other pocket. He panicked and checked all the pockets he had, even the ones he knew were empty.

He had forgotten his phone.

Head in hands, he groaned. "She must think I'm such a tool for not returning her texts."

Kioko sat down with her hands on her knees for a while, trying to catch her breath. But after a while, she took out her small flip phone, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. She texted Cayden saying that she was here, and closed her phone. She waited, and waited, but tried to stay patient as he didn't respond.

When at least Cayden reached the park, he ran down the steps of the stairs, sprinted across the fields of grass and made his way to the fountain. He looked all around him. There was a couple sharing an ice cream treate, a small kid picking his nose (eww) and an elderly woman tending to the trees.

Cayden deflated a little bit.

"Did she not come, did she change her mind?" He thought despairingly to himself.

No he had to be missing something.

He went back to last night when they agreed to meet "near the south best fountain." Cayden wasn't the best at Japanese, knowing enough to get by. He was confused so he asked the front desk for help. They said that "The northern fountain was the best of all the three."

Wait...

South Best...

South West.

"I am such an idiot."

Kioko looked around the park as she waited. Heaving a sigh, she tugged at her jacket as she looked around, finding it a bit worrying that he had never understood what she had said. Maybe she should have said it in English so he could understand? She groaned and face planted onto her palm, sighing.

Cayden arrived breathless at the fountain. Taking a few seconds to regain his composure, he readjusted his glasses and made sure they weren't too dirty. Then he saw her.

"She's even prettier in person." Cayden thought. He started to walk towards her but hesitated. What was wrong? Here was he was about to meet his friend of five years, a trusted confidant and most importantly, fan of all things he himself adored.

So why couldn't he approach her?

Cayden stood lost in thought for a second, then walked, determined, towards her.

And though the blatant fog of her infinite self hating questions, she heard footsteps. She could feel her heart rate spike instantly as she turned around, looking to where the sound came from. And there he was, walking towards her, looking much better than he did in the photo's he had sent her. She got up and walked towards him. "You are Cayden-san, yes?" She asked in English.

Cayden loved the sound of her voice. It didn't have the heavy New York accent of where he grew up, instead much cleaner and softer.

The question caught him off-guard though. He expected for himself to make the greeting first. He shifted his thinking dramatically.

"Yeah, you're Kioko right? Its great to finally meet you." Cayden replied cheerfully.

Kioko smiled happily. "Same to you! This is your first time in japan right?" She asked innocently, her bun bobbing as she spoke. She was used to people who had such limited english and horrible choppy sounding phrases, but he spoke it clean and smoothly, and even with an accent.

Between her nice, warm smile and her melodious tone, she seemed genuinely happy to see Cayden.

"That's a first." Cayden thought to himself.

"Yeah, it is my first time in japan. A little crowded huh?"

It was then Cayden noticed what Kioko was wearing. Despite himself, Cayden gave a small smirk. Of all their interests, vocaloids was the one where they found friction in. He was accepting of those who listened to it, but couldn't get into it himself.

(You had to......)

Kioko smiled at him. "You get used to the crowded streets, roads, and subways full of perverts who try to get their hand up your skirt." She said, mumbling the last part with a vile vengeance before putting on a happy face. "But that's beside the point. The point is that we are here to have fun. So, what do you want to do first?" She asked.

(Believe me I could have said a lot more+passing the torch of what were gonna do for the rest of the day? Dangerous move.)

Slightly put off by the last comment Kioko made, Cayden fidgeted a little until he remembered what they were going to do.

"Did you forget already?" Cayden teased "we were going to visit one of Tokyo's botanical gardens!"

"Not like theres anything else to see." Cayden thought to himself."

(Well you said it yourself. I am a bad ass)

Kioko stared blankly before hitting her head lightly. "Ahhh, gomen. I forgot about that. You see I woke up rather late this morning." She said, blushing lightly as she fidgeted under his gaze. "I have pretty much forgotten everything this morning." She said, laughing awkwardly to try and clear her embarrassment.

(You know I almost considered naming my dude John M. just to see how you would react :P )

Cayden could tell Kioko felt a little embarassed when she laughed, sharing the same experience many times before.

"Its alright I wasnt so speedy in waking up either." Laughing along with her.

(NOT A CHANCE I WILL CHANGE IT. I SWEAR ERIK)

Kioko smiled lightly. "Let's go then!" She said happily, turning around and heading off in the direction of the subway station which would get them to the gardens faster.

(Janna Otp forever :P )

With Kioko leading the way, Cayden had some time to himself to relax.

Cayden hurriedly took off his glasses and wiped them off.

Catching up to Kioko, he also began to look at her closely. She seemed to contain boundless energy, seeming to almost hover over the ground. She was also pretty, gorgeous in fact. but even if she wasn't, it wouldn't have mattered anyway.

"You know these streets pretty well." Cayden spoke.

(Nuuu. I can't deal with you and Ao Hara Ride at the same time...........)

Kioko smiled at him. "Well a growing art student never has money to take a cab or afford a car so I usually take the subway or walk anywhere I go. I live pretty close to here, so that helps too." She said lightly as they walked. She glanced at him once or twice, trying to make sure she hadn't stared at him to long.

(ONLY once or twice?)

Letting Kioko take the lead, Cayden could watch and stare as he pleased without the risk of being found out. Once or twice, Cayden swore he could Kioko look back, but he must have been imagining it.

Cayden considered making a tease about art students and ramen, but he shouldn't be one to talk, he himself lived off of it as well.

"A real life starving artist huh?"

Kioko let out a laugh, looking back. "Yep. Live and in the flesh so look on." She joked to him, turning her head back around as she lead him though the streets. Sometimes she found the occasional predator on the street who tried to follow her home, which caused her to dash to her parents house and cry for most of the night.

Cayden let out a small smile as he followed Kioko through the streets of Tokyo. Before when he had tried to navigate them himself, he felt lost and helpless. But now, with Kioko's help, he felt confident, almost empowered even.

*Grumble*

But even empowered people have to eat.

"You wouldn't happen to know any good places to eat would you?" Cayden asked sheepishly.

Kioko walked though the streets in silence, concentrating on where they where going. But as she heard a rumble behind her, she turned around and looked at him. "Oh! There is a good ramen place not to far. Do you like ramen?" She asked him.

Caydens ears perked up. A good ramen place and nearby also! He was about to speak when he was reminded about his light wallet. "That'll use up all of my bus fare." He thought glumly. But who knows when he'll back in Tokyo again?

"Not that much, but honestly I would eat anything right about know." Grinning sheepishly again.
