"These swamps have claimed many lives, a spirit wouldn't have to wander far." She shifted to lay her head against his good shoulder again, and hugged him around his sides gently. "I love you, Cal."

Callum enjoyed the silence after her words, soaking in the meaning of Emmalia's see h as much as he could, before replying, "I love you too, Em. I'll always love you." Slowly, he kissed her cheek, then smirked. "Let's go get some damn payback."

Em chuckled. "What, you want to leave and just wander around and I'll follow in the distance? I don't feel so good about that idea."

"What, you got a better idea?" He chuckled. "We don't know where he is, so the only way to draw him out is with me."

"I'm just saying - it's the best we have. If you can think of another plan than I'd probably agree with yours since I agree, this is risky, but at least it's some idea."

"You're right," Emmalia sighed. "I just... ugh. Well, if we want a trap, we go back the way we came, if we want to get the spring on him, we go the other way."

"What do you think would work best on him? I don't know Ander well enough to guess what would be most effective on him." Callum was feeling anxious for this fight, partly because Ander might die in the process, but also because he was afraid something might happen to Emmalia.

"Informal fighting. Don't stick to traditional styles. You're the best swordsman in Trulane, but you play dirty whenever you can. And don't forget that I will be there for you too."

Callum nodded his head. "Alright, anything else you want to say before we start this?" Callum asked quietly, standing up and attempting to rotate his shoulder, wincing as he did so.

Callum nodded. "We don't even know if I can die or not yet." He laughed. "I suppose we'll find out soon enough. Let's kill Ander."

Emmaia kissed his cheek, then led him out to the way they had come in. The carriage was still there and it seemed like nothing had changed. Both of them left the tunne. It was dark by then, and Em said, "Go on, head back toward the carriage, I'll follow since I can see you in the dark."

Callum nodded and sighed nervously. He began to walk off towards the carriage, hoping he wouldn't just be shot from nowhere. He prayed Ander would actually try to fight him - since they both knew Ander would probably win, why wouldn't he take the bait?

The carriage was now booby-trapped, but it was sloppy and very evident. Callum would have no problem knowing not to touch that. It was obvious.

When Callum reached the carriage, he noticed the traps set and was a bit shocked on Anders recklessness. Perhaps he had planned on Callum to see it? Either way, he wasn't touching the thing, even if it meant waiting a bit for Ander to reveal himself.

Emmalia still hung back at a decent distance. She couldn't see Callum, but she could hear him at a distance.

Ander waited until he knew that Emmalia wasn't coming, then sprung his trap. He knew that Callum couldn't go into the carriage, he had nowhere to go back on the road, and seeing as he had come from the east, Ander followed that route. He didn't know where they had come from, only the general direction. He approached, and at a safe distance, said, "Go West on this road, you'll hit tripwires galore, get an arrow through your chest, the like. Running into the forest is the same thing." Ander got to a distance where he was visible to Callum, then said, "Facing me, well, you can take your chances on that one. I'm sure your little slut told you all about me."

What neither Callum nor Emmalia knew was that Callum had a spell prepared behind his back, one that, the moment Callum approached or attacked, was similar to a flashbang, something to shock and disorient him.

Callum paced back and forth, red seeping through his bandaged shoulder. "Oh, you mean the slut that you so relentlessly chased after for years? The one you're obviously not jealous about not having?" Part of Callum wished to mock Ander, but he knew he might try something if Callum talked too long. The pain from his shoulder was starting up again, however, and Callum began to feel rather angry. "I hope you have a doctor to patch me up, or Emmalia will write you a strongly worded letter." He threatened.

Ander actually laughed. "Oh, it's not her I want. I wanted her money, the land she was to inherit, though, I'll admit, when we courted? Oh, her body was very tempting." Ander smirked, knowing he would pass Callum off. "But no. I don't want her. Even when I punished her for scarring my face and denying my wishes, what I had a right to, no. It's her immortality. Did you know, a vampire, as they kill people, gains black magic? Even if they had had none before. Eventually very powerful ones can even cut out their own hearts so some wooden stake can't kill them. Why not just become a vampire, well, besides them being targets for holy orders and overzealous priests, there's the insanity and the fact that, well.... vampires aren't known for their mental strength. One very good mind mage, and, well, a vampires as good as gone if they aren't strong enough." He shrugged a bit. "Emmy always surprised me, her mental strength. Her empathy, even after her vampirism. Not that she didn't go after the food I gave her, of course. But I'm sure you know about that."

Callum tried his best to ignore anything Ander said. Callum knew that to win a fight, you needed to be level headed, and piss off your enemy, which both of them were obviously attempting to raise the bar for the other. "Whatever you have to say is invalid, Ander. Next time I see you, I'll be ushering your soul back to where it belongs." Callum finished his talk, and pulled out his sword. He could only hold it with one hand, though, due to his shoulder being in great pain. Callum stepped forward, not knowing what Ander had in store for him.

"Next time, maybe. But not this time." Ander brought his hand forward from behind his back, casting the spell that would undoubtedly shock and disoriented Callum. That time was all he needed to rush Callum, knock his sword from his hand, and push him against the carriage wall. He held a dagger to his throat and said lowly, "I've got you, means soon I'll get the bitch too. Let her know that everything from here out is her fault, then take her away again." Ander smirked, then, just for kicks, hit Callum in the face with the hilt of the dagger.

Emmalia saw the flash of the spell and started approaching.

Callum let out a grunt as the dagger collided with his face. A nasty gash was left on his cheek, with a trail of blood trickling from the newly bruised flesh. Callum could already tell it wasn't going to heal too well, and was rather sure he'd obtain much more scars by the end of this fight. Having heard what Ander had said, Callum held his hands out - warning Emmalia not to approach, as he knew she would attempt to save him. Lucky for Callum, this also looked like he was holding his hands up in self defense. He came up with an excuse quickly. "Wait, you kill me, or even hurt me too badly, and Emmalia might not even show up. She probably already knows I'm a lost cause at this point. Like you said, she's smart." He continued to talk, trying to think of a way to get an upper hand without Emmalia being put in danger.

"See, I managed to get into her head when I had her. And do you know what? She has this stupid sense of morality. Like when I killed that last bastard of hers, she cried and cried. I managed to convince her that that was her fault, too. Kind of easily, really." He chuckled, then hit Callum with the back of the dagger again, from the other direction.

Callum had been prepared this time, and flinched less when the dagger collided with his face again. His cheek was cleanly cut, the back of the dagger's blunt force causing more damage than Callum thought it could. However, despite the pain, he let out a quiet, short laugh. "I think you're missing something crucial about her - She's great at adapting." Callum said, and took a heavy breath before continuing. "And I'm harder to kill than the last guy." With that, Callum attempted to toss Ander around, making sure to have a lower center of gravity to get the upper hand. He had hoped to knock him into one of the traps on the carriage, and use his own intelligence against him.

Callum had succeeded in forcing Ander back, and some of Callum's armor had nicked Ander's skin, letting a bit of blood dribbled from his hand.Ander did not take kindly to that at all, especially Callum trying to take control, and before Callum could even push him back on the carriage, he had put both palms flat on Callum's chest and used magic to shock him and send him flying a few yards. For Cal, it would feel like he'd been kicked in the chest very hard.

Ander was furious. "How dare you? You idiot, thinking you had so much as a chance?! Can't you see?! I'M IN CONTROL NOW!"Ander took a bludgeon from the back of his belt and was going to attack Callum, bearing him to near death, but he didn't get the chance.

Emmalia had been the wild card the whole time, and had been waiting for Callum to be far enough away so that it would be safe for him. She had heard everything, and when she had smelled Callum's blood and heard him grunt in pain as he was hit, she could feel her heart rate pick up, and felt like her soul, her instincts, her very mind, was a string being pulled tighter and tighter. Feel her adrenaline rising. When she heard Callum thrown to the ground and smelled anders blood, that string inside of her just... snapped. Running as fast as she could, she had hit Ander like a train, knocking him to the ground and immediately dragging him up again to throw him against the carriage, making certain his head hit hard. "You're not in control. You're nothing," she growled, her voice not even sounding quite like hers.

(Should Callum look up, he would notice her paler than normal, with her eyes no longer green, but red."
