"I see...." Her father said quietly. There was silence for a few minutes, then he said, "So I assume you won't stay here until marriage, despite tradition?"

"No," Emmalia said. "I live with Callum now, and besides, King Cassian expects us to return."

"I see...." while most might have interpreted his words as disappointment for knowing his daughter would soon leave again, Emmalia knew that it just meant her father's original plan - whatever it had been - had been foiled.

"I told you she's just here for the land and gold,' her mother said.

Emmalia was shocked at the statement, and said, "Hell, you can keep the gold and the land, I just want to make sure the people are cared for! That is all!"

"They are cared for!" Her mother practically yelled.

"No they're not! You treat the servants terribly and you never listen to the village elders when they come to you!" Emmalia raised her voice slightly.

"They don't come to us!"

"Because they know you won't do anything!" Emmalia said a little louder.

"Calm down, both of you." Callum spoke assertively, but he didn't shout. He knew he wasn't the Lord of the castle, but he had the right mind to stop them from arguing any longer. "We need your men for better patrols of the area. We don't need your money or your land, and you don't deserve it either. I will, however, take immediate emergency control and entrust the land to a trusted advisor, if anyone raises their voice again. Either of you. I ask only to have my meal in peace." He put extra stress on his final word, since it not only referenced to the table conversation, but also to the overall scheme.

Emmalia was mad enough at her parents, it didn't help that her fiance had to make threats just to get them to actually shut up.

Lord LaFaren looked very ibsulted, but said, "I will agree with Callum on the fact that dinners ought to be peaceful. Everything else is up for debate."

"Thank you." Callum said politely through gritted teeth. He gave Emmalia's hand a gentle squeeze. "How can we be certain you'll give the land to Emmalia? Is your word bond?" He asked.

Lord LaFaren seemed insulted. "I don't want to give it to her. But she's blood. Surely you understand the importance of that? We raised her, we shall reap what we've sewn, but I greatly prefer to give my and t one of my noble blood than any other."

Emmalia squeezed Callum's hand. Technically he wasn't of noble blood, but her parents didn't know that. She just hoped he wouldn't say anything to ruin things.

Callum decided that saying anything more might hurt their chances of getting her parents land. He honestly couldn't have cared less about them, or anything they owned, he just wanted to see Emmalia happy. He couldn't make her happy in a divided Trulane, so he would do whatever was necessary to secure a bright future - even if it meant threatening her parents at first, and being kind right after.

Emmalia gave him a small smile of reassurance. He was doing well with her parents. "Thank you, Father. I will take good care of the West when the time comes."

Callum had a small smile on his face. Not enough that anyone but Emmalia could see - They were sitting in the company of terrible parents, in the middle of a kingdom under coup, and their castle had just been besieged. Somehow, though, Callum could only see a bright, steady future ahead of them.

Emmalia cleared her throat and said, "So, is dinner done, then...?"

Lady LaFaren looked over to her husband, then said, "I suppose so. Lord Cross, you have the men you need for Cassian, he just needs to send a Captain to take command and he has them."

"I thank you, Lord LaFaren. I appreciate the hospitality." Callum could tell Emmalia was ready to leave her parents company, and he was willing to give her whatever she wanted. He stood from his chair and pushed it in, before offering his hand to Emmalia. "I will be sure to have Cassian send a captain as soon as he can."

Emmalia took his hand, then said their good-byes. Once back in the carriage, Em groaned and leaned her head on Cal's shoulder. "See why I ran away? And they were surprisingly kind all night too."

"Well, when you have a leader of one of the largest militaries in Trulane, it can put some people in their place." Callum said, hoping to cheer her up a bit. "You were more restrained and respectable than anyone else would have been in that situation. I'm proud of you, Em." He kissed the top of her head and stared off in the distance. "I'm proud of you."

"Thank you," she murmured as she nested her head into the crook of his neck. "I wanted to scream, I wanted to yell, I wanted to attack, but I didn't. I'm confused as to why they let me go so easily - then again, maybe you're right and it's because you're here."

Callum kissed her cheek gently. "I love you Emmalia." He spoke simply. "Don't worry about it now, we got what we wanted and we're on our way back home. I'd say it's a pretty good day."

"Definitely," Em said, then added, "We, relatively, I still would rather have never seen them again. But this will do." She stayed quiet for a few moments, lost in thought, then softly said, "Hey... Cal?" Just then, the carriage abruptly stopped at a log in their path.

Callum looked out at the log in the road with a frown. "Just great..." Callum said, and looked back at her. "I'll be back. Hold that thought." He said and got out of the carriage to check out if there was anything he could do.

Emmalia waited patiently, but felt extremely uneasy. She didn't like being in the west at all, even less near her parents' castle. And what a coincidence it was that a log would be over the road. He couldn't move that log on his own, and she wanted out of there right away, so she stepped out of the carriage, and spotted the trap before him. "CALLUM!" There was a tripwire by the log, that, if tripped, would have sent a crossbow bolt right into Callum's shoulder.

Callum looked up once Emmalia called his name, assuming something was wrong. When he did this, however, his foot hit the tripwire and activated the trap. The bolt shot through the air and towards Callum. He didn't have the reflexes to stop the arrow from hitting him - and the arrow struck Callum's shoulder with enough force to knock him to the ground.

Emmalia was on the ground by his side in a split second, carefully pulling him close to protect him and see the wound. "Oh Gods, Callum, I'm so sorry, I should have seen it sooner." She looked around, for any sign of anyone, or one person in specific. "We need to get to the next village, o-or go back in the carriage...." That was a stupid option, going back would only put them further into the danger zone. Emmaia didn't want to scare Cal, but they were being hunted, and they were right in the hunter's front yard.

Callum groaned softly as he looked down at his shoulder. "I've survived worse." He said. He had already died, and he had a doubt that he could die again, but he still could feel pain. He slowly attempted to sit up. "What's going on? Who's attacking us?"

"Don't call me paranoid. I think it's Ander. This is a trap he would make. Hell, my parents might have told him we were in a carriage, going this route. By this point... this is probably part of a larger trap, a game. Gods I should have killed him when I had the chance as a kid." Emmalia sighed and looked around. She was doing her best to ignore the scent of Callum's blood.

Callum attempted to stand up, and rose to his feet after a bit. "We need to get out of here, where do we go? How do we stop Ander?" He paused for a moment before looking her up and down. "Are you okay? Nothing happened to you, right?"

Emmalia shook her had. She was a bit paler than before, but she was just nervous. "I'm fine, I'm just shocked. Trying to think ahead of this. No matter what we do, he'll have thought of it. Going back would be a death sentence, my parents would harbor him." She paused and looked up at the trees around them. "Wait. Follow me...." She helped him to his feet, then guided him past the fallen log and down the path a bit, then cut off to the side between some old oaks. Still with her arm around him in case he should wobble, she kicked away some leaves and revealed a heavy wooden hatch with a big iron ring on it. She pulled it up and revealed a set of stairs lit by mage light. She guided him down, then closed the hatch - she knew the leaves would magically move to cover the hatch.

Callum didn't want to go down into the mysterious hatch, but it seemed Emmalia knew what it was, and he had to trust her. They had no other options or ideas. "What is this place?" Callum asked as he attempted to make sure he didn't trip over the steep stairs.

Em kept her hand on his shoulder as they walked. "It's a kind of tunnel. Supposed to be for dark hunters to restock food or escape any problems they run into. It's also a shortcut. I can guarantee Ander doesn't know about this, and that's what we need." The tunnel led into a large room with smaller rooms branching off, three of which were more tunnels. Emmalia led him to one of the rooms which had a bed on it, and told him to sit while she got medical supplies.
