The letter read along the lines of, "Gallium has told me a theory about your lineage. I believe it to be likely. However, I can promise complete secrecy if you merely confirm or deny it for me, as I respect your hunting skills greatly. Include, also, if I ought to say anything to the LaFaren family. As I said, I will respect your wish, but I must warn you, that he may have told guards as well."

Daniel was faring little better than Callum, having gotten thrown at one point, but he was still fighting. At one point he got in a solid blow to the demon's leg, forcing it to its knees. As he went to make a decapitation swing, the demon suddenly lunged, knocking Daniel away with a fiery hand.

Camilla took a moment to process what was being said exactly, and when she did, she let out a gasp. "LaFaren? That girl has been missing for..." She looked down at Emmalia with wide eyes. "You're the LaFaren girl everyone's been searching for?"

Callum saw Daniel get knocked down by the demon, and decided to take the time to strike while it was recovering. He used all of his might to swing across the demons neck, slicing through it. He was unsure if the demon was killed or not, and turned around after his swing to check.

"None other," Emmalia said through gritted teeth as she continued searching for paper. "But I would prefer my vanishing act not be revealed - my parents are not the only ones hunting for me."

Callum had successfully slain the demon. The corpse fell into a pool of dark purple blood. Daniel recovered himself and said, "Well done, Lord Cross. But let's get you upstairs to Maven - your arm is bleeding as well as your face."

Camilla had breathed heavily and said, "Well, I suppose it's good that the king is on your side. It sounds like he's perfectly fine keeping your secret."

Callum's adrenaline was still pumping when the demon fell to the ground, lifeless. Only when his body and mind cooled did he begin to feel the pain of the scar. It wasn't too terrible, and he guessed it was partly because of his new reaper-esque strength, and partly because he was still standing. Slowly, Callum nodded and made his way up the stairs.

"It's not him I'm worried about," Emmalia said quietly as she began writing on the paper she had found. "Your father has already caused some trouble for Cal and I - he sent an assassin to kill Callum. Failed , of course," Em wasn't sure how much to tell Camilla, so she lied, "But an assassin nonetheless. Whoever got that information iut, he could tell anything to. Had to have been a guard with ideas of high payment." She included in the letter about the attempted assassination by both Balder and Gallium's man, then yelled for the courier. When he arrived, she gave him the letter and told him to take a horse and be as swift as possible, though she knew that even then it might take five days.

Maven waited patiently for the men, and took a list of injuries. Daniel was mostly badly bruised and a bit burned, some minor internal bleeding that she fixed easily, Callum had the cut on his arm and gashes on his face, and Conroy was just fine. After healing Daniel's internal bleeding, she focused on Callum, first his arm, then his face. She made the bleeding stop on his arm and wrapped it uo, then stopped the bleeding on his face and said, "You're probably gonna have some scars here, but don't worry, girls love it." She gave him a compress to hold to the now scabbed-over cuts. "Once we're back at the inn I can help both of you better."

Camilla sat on the edge of the bed, looking over at her. "Well, I hope you can keep your secret for as long as you need. But, Emmalia... As a soon to be sister in law, I recommend that, as soon as you can, find a way to stop hiding from the world. It'll be more enjoyable."

Callum nodded his head. "Thank you." He said and recollected on the events of the day. He was rather sad to hear they were going back to the inn. He missed Emmalia terribly and wanted nothing more but to go back and see her at the castle. "Is there anything else we need to do?"

"Camilla. No offense, but if you'd lived my life, you'd want to hide too. There's nothing in the spotlight that I want. My family should all burn in hell, and I have quite the record of violence that could be held against me. Not to mention, there's a maniac after me who already kidnapped me once." Emmalia sighed and slumped down in a chair. "I prefer hiding. It suits me well."

"Well, I'd like to finish healing your arm at the inn, but no, Roy just has to burn the corpse and scatter the circle." Maven said.

Indeed, Conroy was just walking back up the stairs. "That's taken care of. Always pretty watching the purple flames." For Callum's sake, he explained, "Demon blood makes purple sparks and flames when tossed into a fire."

Camilla nodded slowly. "I'm sorry to hear that. Why not inform the king then? Maybe he could find a way to protect you? After all, it's pretty hard to get through his royal guards, if he sends a detachment here..." She suggested.

"Ah." Callum said with a small smile. He was never one for supernatural beings, but he could get used to a life like this. Taking care of spirits, maybe helping with the occasional demon. Emmalia wouldn't be allowed anywhere near demons, though. Even if she was immortal, he wasn't putting her in danger like that. "I'd like to return as soon as possible."

Emmalia shook her head. "If he wanted to get past the guards, he could. Any time. Best option is keeping a low profile."

Maven smiled and said, "You just want to get back to your girl, don't you? Walk with us to the inn, I'll heal you, then you can be on your merry way."

"Well then, don't you think being married to the warlord of the land is a bit obvious?' She let out a giggle. "If you ever need a place to hide, you can always come by my shop. I've got a ton of hidden rooms there, plus hidden caches all around the town. It's a good place to disappear."

Callum blushed slightly, and nodded his head. "That would be wonderful, thank you." He said, walking with their group back to the inn.

"I may take you up on that, thank you." Emmalia paused, then asked, "If I may, how did you get turned?"

Before entering the inn, Daniel had to revert his armor and battle axe to gems. Upon entering the inn, Daniel was confronted with an immediate challenge, one who evidently was not willing to wait. Something about a bet was mentioned, but it was rather insane ramblings as Daniel tried quite ardently to avoid the fight. He dodged punch after punch, but when a maid got pushed out of the way, he gave up and attacked the man, knocking them both to the ground by the fireplace. Blood was she'd on both sides, despite Daniel pulling punches. Only Callum would notice the purple flickering flames.

"Me? I willingly asked for it." She said and shrugged. "I knew a few vampires who were sons of the men my father did business with. I wanted to live forever, so naturally, I asked them to turn me. And they did, in the middle of the forest at midnight."

Callum frowned as he watched the fight go down in the inn. He looked over at Roy, and asked, "Should I help with that?" He didn't want to join a fight if he wasn't permitted to join it, and keeping himself clean of besting up civilians would make sure his reputation wasn't ruined.

"Romantic timing," Emmalia said wryly. Vampirism wasn't something to be taken lightly, but she wouldn't lecture Camilla on it.

Conroy chuckled and took a seat at one of the open tables. "No, it's just Daniel. People often take bets to fight against him. As you saw, he tries to avoid it, but it's very common. He's just messing with the guy, too, or else the fight would be over."

Camilla nodded. "What about you? How did you turn?" She asked, slightly curious herself.

Callum nodded slowly and sat down. He looked to Maven for healing, hoping it wouldn't take too long. He was beginning to be anxious, he hadn't spent this much time without her in a long time.

For some reason, it was much less personal when talking to another vampire, so she didn't mind the question like she did when Callum had asked. "I got murdered. Being foolhardy, I ran after some crazy guy that jumped out of a window - and he was covered in blood, mind - and grabbed his shoulder. He bit me, I stabbed him, and here we are."

Maven sat down next to Callum and started working on healing his arm while the brawl raged behind them. Finally Daniel stood and said, "Alright, we're done," in a very final tone. The man got up and tackled Daniel anyway, and Daniel, frustrated, ended the fight with a single hit.

"Huh. Not nearly as... heroic as I thought it'd be." She chuckled. "I figured you took down a whole crowd of vampires and got bot by the elder, considering you're a monster slayer."

Callum watched the fight with a frown, not forgetting about the fire. "Do you guys see that? The purple flames?" He asked, unsure if that was bad news or not.

"Oh no, taking down vampire covens was what I did after that," Emmalia said with a grin. "It's funny, technically I'm weaker than them, drinking only animal blood, but somehow I do it quite regularly. Probably because I'm not insane."

Conroy and Maven glanced over at the flames and stiffened, visibly a bit awkward. Maven turned back to healing Callum. Conroy cleared his throat. "Well, there were two men fighting by that fire. One of them is unconscious, the other just knocked him out in one hit...."

Camilla nodded. "Yes, I've had my own run-ins with other vampires. I've had to attack a few out of defense. How long ago were you turned? Must not have been too long if you're still on animal blood."

"Yeah yeah no surprise." Callum said. "I figured he was the second I met him." Callum wasn't very shocked, although it was good to know his suspicion was correct. "I was just wondering if a demon was about to come out of the fire or something."

"Six years, now. Not much longer than you I'd guess, since last we met Callum didn't seem surprised by your age."

"Figured he was what?" Daniel said as he walked up behind Callum. He looked over at the fire, then back to Cal. "A normal human who was murdered in cold blood and made a deal to save his wife, but didn't know the side effects of the deal would cause a demon half to arise? Yeah, then you figured riggt, and youre damn smart, since Death didn't expect it either." It rather begged the question - even if Daniel's power set was a bit different, would Callum's have any side effects...?

"Honestly I think Callum just doesn't care. He definitely doesn't know I'm a vampire, but he never notices changes in people. Or, lack of changes."

Callum frowned. "No, I figured you weren't entirely human, since the second time I saw you, you flew through a wall. But yes, it does make sense that you're as powerful now because of whatever side effects you're talking about." Callum was beginning to wonder if he was going to have something tragic happen to him, too. The thought scared him, to say the least.

"To be fair, I don't think he'd ever seen a vampire and known they were a vampire before me. How long have you been a vampire for?"

"Well having a demon half take control whenever you get too angry is a bad side effect. Don't listen to me, though, I'm just bitter about it." He headed for the door and said to Maven and Roy, who both looked uncomfortable, "I'm going for a walk."

"Give or take ten years." She said. "I'm supposed to be... 27? I got bit at 17." She said. "Why I don't have a baby face, but I don't necessarily look mature either."

Callum sighed as he watched Daniel leave. He knew that some people liked to simply be left alone when they're mad, just in case they lash out or hurt someone. Callum knew this - because he was the exact same way. "Thank you for your time Maven." He said and stood to leave. "It was a pleasure to meet and work with you all. If you ever need help, or a place to stay, you can count on me."

Emmalia said, "I wouldn't have guessed seventeen. You can still pull off appearances with old friends for a while, then, before there's suspicion." There was something that had been bugging her, though. "How did you not kill anyone when you first woke up? Every vampire I've met has woken up in a blind frenzy for blood. The kind that's not sated with just a sip."

Both Maven and Conroy said their goodbyes. Daniel was nowhere to be seen outside."

"Oh, my vampire friend was very cautious. He took me out to the woods and tied me up to a tree for the night, and came back in the morning."

Callum sighed as he saw Daniel had left, before he could say goodbye. Either way, Callum found a carriage and paid for a ride back to the castle, arriving at the gates not too long after.

"Ah. And you probably have a hell of a time on full moons, don't you? I have it bad enough with animal blood only, you on human... what's your trick? Chains in a cellar? Chained to a tree?" Emmaia heard the arrival of a carriage. That was either a noble or Callum, but nobody was permitted entry but Camilla, Callum, and Emmalia. When the doors opened, Emmalia stood and ran to the front doors as fast as she could and practically tackled Callum in a tight hug.
