Callum chuckled. "We were a couple of renegades, you and I. back in our younger years," He said the last part jokingly, since it hadn't been long ago at all.

A few days later, after settling back into their castle, the guards informed them of a visitor requesting quite insistently in an audience. The visitor was unarmed, and gave his name, Lanthaire Durwane. Emmalia, as usual, decided to accompany Callum in receiving this guest. He was a very well-dressed man, wearing a number of gold rings and necklaces. He stopped a third of the way into the room and bowed deeply. "M'Lord and Lady Cross, I thank you for this audience on such short notice."

"Of course," Callum said, nodding towards the man. "We can't refuse a man who insists on having us." Callum didn't mean it as a jab towards the man at all, but wanted him to know that he assumed this would be important.

"You could have, which is what makes me all the more grateful, M'Lord." Lanthaire took a few steps forward, closer to the almost-thrones Cal and Em sat in for formal audiences.

Em stiffened and gestured to a guard, then whispered something in his ear, and he ran off. She had a dangerous look in her eyes, the kind she normally would have when she put on her huntress persona. She said rather loudly, "I think, it might be best if the guards dispersed and let this meeting be entirely private now." She squeezed Callum's hand in a way that told her to trust him.

The guards hesitated, then left. Once the last guard was gone, Lanthaire smiled slightly. "It is good to see that M'Lady is quick on her toes, so to speak."

Callum didn't understand what was happening, and wasn't sure if they were in danger or not. Part of him wondered if she sent them away because she knew the guards would get hurt - either way, he kept his hand close to his side where he kept his sword.

Emmalia stayed silent and looked Lanthaire over for a few moments, then asked, "Camilla?" In a tone that sounded much more like a statement.

Lanthaire shrugged. "Well, Lady Camilla is a wonderful woman, but not my main goal, I'm afraid."

Emmalia nodded. "Elaborate. What is your main goal?"

Lanthaire smiled and said, "I am a mere messenger, M'Lady. I was sent by my Lord to thank you and your husband for disposing of the runaway."

Emmalia thought for a second, then asked, "The manic vampire we killed?"

Lanthaire nodded solemnly. "Yes, M'Lady. His mind could not comprehend the Black Gift, and he escaped us before we could even try to help him. My Lord has given that town gold and young, strong cattle to try to begin to repay the damages caused."

Emmalia smirked. "How civil. I would almost assume you were part of the vampiric nobility, but the 'Black Gift' is not a term used by that type."

"We consider ourselves..." Lanthaire searched for the word, "Well, just as civil as the nobility clans. But unlike them, we do not masquerade as that which we are not. But we are not savages either."

Emmalia nodded, then looked to Callum and explained, "Lanthaire is a vampire. The noble vampires are those like Camilla. They remain part of society, and have their own hierarchal structure as well. And they do their best to never kill for food. Lanthaire, however, is of a clan that does, and a clan that does not participate in human society."

Lanthaire said, "We do not kill humans needlessly, mind. We take careful care not to kill in large amounts, or kill children, and our favored diet is criminals."

Callum tried to take in all of the information presented to him. After Emmalia's explaining, he nodded slowly. "So this vampire that went crazy, does that happen often? And when you talk about the Black Gift, is that just a term for Vampirism?"

Lanthaire nodded. "The Black Gift is vampirism, yes. As for if it happens often? It is always a fair risk, but normally we dispatch them if we see they cannot handle the change."

Emmalia leaned back in her chair and watched Lanthaire carefully. "Is delivering a message the only reason you're here?"

Lanthaire smirked. "Again, M'Lady is a step ahead. My Lord wishes to meet you, soon. In fact, he would like to invite yourself and Lady Camilla to join our dark family."

Emmalia smirked and shook her head. "I'd have thought you'd be aware of how many vampire covens I have destroyed in my time. No, I shall not join you, and neither shall Lady Camilla, I am sure. Since your 'family' has not caused too much trouble... I will not attack them, though."

Lanthaire sighed. "'Tis a pity, to be sure, M'Lady. But now, I shall thank you both for your time receiving me. If I may depart, M'Lord Cross?"

Callum nodded his head. "I believe that is all for now, Sir Lanthaire. If any more important matters show, don't hesitate to come to us."

"Yes, but he is not part of the vampiric nobility. I worry there is more. If there is nothing more in the coming days, he will be in my favor, but...." Em frowned. She wasn't sure why she was so ill at ease. Maube it was the smell of blood on Lanthiare that only she had smelled. "We should just stay alert."

"How alert? Like "look out for a single guy who sucks blood" kind of alert or "There might be a vampire army coming to slaughter us" kind of alert?"

"Keep our mouths shut and the guard on the high side kind of alert," Em said. "And Camilla should be alerted and be kept... Not under watch, but safer."

Callum nodded. "I'll see to it. Just keep me updated." He stood up with a chuckle. "If you told me three years ago my life would be ruled by vampires, I'd think you were crazy."
