Em shook her head. "No, I'm just going to try for a rabbit. I just thought the walk together would be nice. Don't you agree?"

"Of course I agree." Cal set down his book and stood, giving Emmalia a gentle kiss on her head. "I enjoy any time I have with you, Lily Pad."

"I love it when you call me that," she said quietly, then took his hand. The hunt was swift, and again, Emmalia actually let Callum see her while she fed. Soon they returned, closer to nightfall, but with an interesting letter from a Northern Lord - specifically, the Lord of the northwestern city that Emmalia loved dearly, the one she had once described to Callum, which was half dug into the stone of a mountain, and half beautiful pine forests. The letter said that very strange things had been happening, including strange murders, and that, as they were the best to call for such things, their assistance was requested.

When Emmalia had finished reading over the letter he looked over it himself. he hadn't been to the city before, nor met it's Lord, but he wasn't opposed to going there. "What do you think? Taking on another murder contract?"

Emmalia shrugged. "Could be something with a ghost. So maybe it's best that you go. And it all went well last time, so, I don't see why not."

Callum nodded his head. "I'll send a letter out. We'll leave at our earliest convenience." Callum sat down at his table and began to write down on the parchment.

Soon they arrived at the city. Emmalia was happy to return to familiar haunts, and showed Callum the quickest way to the castle. The Lord, Lord Armage, welcomed them warmly, then began explaining the issue. "The guards can't figure it out - nobody can. It's simply strange. Animals have been acting strangely, and young women have disappeared at night with no signs of a struggle. Others have disappeared too, but their bodies have been found - and it isn't very pretty. I don't know what to do."

"Perhaps another mage? Or maybe some sort of phenomenon caused by some kind of unrest?" Cal looked over at Emmalia. It was possible a ghost could be affecting the animals as they feel it's presence, and could be controlling the girls to go somewhere without a fight, but he decided not to let this information out freely.

Emmalia shrugged. "I would need more information. M'Lord, we will stay at the local Inn to collect as much information about this as we can."

Lord Armage nodded. "I thank you kindly. You two will be handsomely rewarded."

Now dismissed, Emmalia took Callum's hand as they walked to the inn. The whole time, they spoke quietly. "I'm suspicious of cult ties - the stronger a demon summoning spell gets, the more animals get upset. And with each month it would get stronger. But the girls are a mystery - why would there not be a struggle?"

""Maybe whoever is abducting them is just too good to leave a trace? Or, a ghost or spirit could be possessing them. Either way we're dealing with more than a single mage more likely. Either a cult or a ghost, possibly both."

"I agree. Cults from around here aren't uncommon. Ghosts probably aren't either." She hoped it was a simple ghost that Callum could take care of.

Callum nodded and gave Emmalia's hand a squeeze. "If it's a possessive ghost then we have a bad problem on our hands. Not only could it take anyone of us - you, me, anybody - but we'd have to find what the ghost is linked to and destroy it, which could take years to find out."

Emmalia nodded. "Right...." She looked up at him, then quietly said, "The ghost could take you...? A reaper...?" That seemed like something one would expect a God to protect him from.

"Well, it might be able to. I haven't ran into one that could yet, but anything's possible if you're strong enough. After all, how is a god supposed to protect me from something it can't get on its own? Death wouldn't need me if it could get spirits on its own. "

"I guess that's true. I just kind of imagined death giving you some kind of invisible shied of mental protection or something." She shrugged. They had arrived at the inn, and after booking a room for two, Emmalia settled down on the bed, then chuckled and said, "Cal, remember that time we fought over who would get the bed because neither of us wanted to take it? Then we ended up sharing anyway because of my fever?

Callum chuckled and nodded as he laid down beside her. "I also remember when we hated each other, but you slept in my lap in the woods for warmth. I think that was one of my favorite moments."

"I think our marriage rivals that, or the first kiss, but that was a nice moment too." She smiled, then crawled close to him and curled up against him to sleep. Before she fell asleep, though, she quietly said, "Cal...? I'm a little scared about this job."

Callum wrapped his arms protectively around Emmalia, keeping her close to him. "It'll be okay lily pad, we're the best team in Trulane. If anyone could do this, it's us."

"And I love you, dearest. Now, get some sleep. You deserve it." Callum closed his eyes and kissed her cheek, ready for the day to be over with.

Emmalia smiled and nestled against him, pulling up the blanket before falling asleep against him.

Come morning, there was a frost outside - not near them, rhough, as they were at an inn deeper into the mountain, where internal brazier a kept the place warmer. They started with the innkeeper, who told them little of use, except that the girls has been in locked rooms each night - after the first girl, it became common practice to lock the door against intruders.

"We're the doors still locked when they were checked on, or were they opened?" Cal asked, knowing a sane person wouldn't lock the door again after a kidnapping.

"Unlocked, I believe," the innkeeper answered.

Emmalia asked, "Don't you know if they had had anything strange going on previously?" Perhaps the girls just ran away?

"No, the parents said they had all been acting perfectly normal the says preceding the disappearances."

Callum frowned as he thought, trying to come up with a conclusion to their predicament. "Well, it couldn't be the thing we thought of earlier. Possibly a mage still. Maybe the girls just left their rooms? If no one had the key to get in, no one should've been able to enter the room. Who has the keys?"

"The parents," the innkeeper responded, though he added, "I don't think the girls just left. Most in the city were scared witless when the first two disappeared - i didn't see a single girl on the streets at night after that."
