"Well, there can only be so many mages in this town. What would even be the mages motives though? That's the part that gets me."

"Power. Necromancers and cultists can gain power through the deaths of innocents. Killing people wantonly like this? It would explain the lack of correlation." Em sighed and climbed through the window, back indoors.

Cal followed, taking one last glance out the window before shutting it. "I suppose we're going to sleep?" He asked, beginning to undo the straps of his armor.

"Yes, in the morning, we will see if our new mage friend can't be of any help with a trap I have in mind." Em started helping him take off his armor.

"Thank you." He said and soon was out of his armor. "What is it you're thinking? I like to know things before I commit to any plans."

"I'm thinking we put out another illusion, then that mage can maybe see if there's a magic connection between the beast and anything else, and then maybe he can guide us to anything it's tied to."

"Mages can do that?" Cal asked, looked up at her as he rested back on the bed. "You need to teach me some of this stuff Em, I can't have you constantly out smarting me."

Em chuckled quietly. "You're a warrior-Lord, I'm a dark huntress-barely-Lady. You'd probably outsmart me in economic and diplomatic matters most days of the week."

"Well yes, but politics and economics are boring. I wish I knew how to just... Fight anything. Kill any monster. Anyone can learn that; it takes true skill to take a profession like that Em." Cal reached a hand up and held hers gently.

"The trick isn't knowing how to kill things, it's when not to. I don't want to kill this beast, I want to kill the mage behind this. It's not the beast's fault." She squeezed his hand and sat down by his side as she started taking off her armor.

Cal looked over at her and brought Em into a gentle embrace when she was done taking off her armor. "I suppose so. Still, gotta love being the best fighter in the room all the time." Callum kissed the top of her head gently.

Em let him pull her close, and took enjoyment in it too. It was nice to have someone to cuddle with and protect her when she felt like being vulnerable. She kissed his cheek, then quietly said, "Yup, and between the two of us, we're unbeatable."

Cal smiled and raised an eyebrow. "Oh yeah? What makes you say that?" Cal felt that Emmalia was unbeatable on her own, and if anything he was dragging her down. He didn't say that of course, since he knew Emmalia would try and change his mind.

"Well it's no secret that you're the best swordsman in Trulane. And you know the political stuff better than I. I can do sneaky stuff and recognize beasts, so between us, we have a complete advantage over anyone."

Cal nodded and kissed her head. "I suppose so. But you could easily pick up my talents and probably do them better. Hell, you pretty much run the castle yourself." Callum kissed her cheek. "My adviser."

Emmalia smirked. "Oh, hush. I just lay around the castle all day, reading about monsters and stuff, you do all the actual work. Not to mention, lately you've been my adviser more than anything, giving me that potion and bringing me back when I go over the edge."

Cal chuckled lightly. "We'll call it even for now. But we will revisit this topic, and you'll see I'm right." Cal turned her to face him and brought his lips to hers gently.

Cal smiled against Em's lips, and pulled away when he needed to breathe. "Come on, the sooner we fall asleep the sooner we'll get up." Cal got himself situated and closed his eyes as he held onto her.

Cal had slept rather well that night, and rose when the sun did. He sat up and stretched, smiling down at Em as she slept. He got up and attempted to get on all of his gear on his own to keep from disturbing Emmalia.

Em slept solidly, rolling over when Cal moved away, and mumbling something quietly. Without him there, though, whatever dream she had had soon devolved into a nightmare. She whimpered quietly, seeming to reach for something, and at one point murmured, "Cal, no...."

Cal looked over at Em, who obviously wasn't having good dreams. He shook her shoulder gently. "Em, wake up." He said gently, hoping to wake her up easily.

Em opened her eyes and flinched, looking up at him with wide eyes for a few moments, then grabbing his shoulder and pulling him close so she could hug him. "I love you Cal," she said quietly, almost a whimper.

Callum was somewhat surprise at the sudden embrace Emmalia gave him, but returned the hug openly. "I love you too Em." He said, and pulled away a bit to look into her eyes. "Is something wrong? A nightmare?"
