26.Leo.Vampire.Fire

Mosquito.

Rage instantly burned across every synapse of every fiber of his being. His fangs extended and his jaw clenched a couple times as he tried to maintain his composure, trying not to lose that cocky grin on his face. He stared down at the small, dark haired twin as she approached him despite the literal fire that was burning bright in his eyes. He knew the effect he had on her and he was feeding off of it. Out of the twins he liked getting under Veda's skin the most. Vesta ignored him, but Veda? She grabbed hold of the collar of his tank and tugged him down to her level. He could see the effect he had on her, and he loved it.

And that little threat of hers? Music to his ears.

His smirk spread wide across his face as she released him and stormed off, a deep chuckle rumbling in his chest. "Oh, baby girl, you're going to eat your words today..." Leo stood and straightened out his shirt, though as he turned to face the circle he saw Alina and Cy by the arch. His smirk fell, his brows furrowed and he instantly was put into a bitter move. Alina was his trophy. She was the air heir's cousin, the prettiest girl he had met to date. She would provide powerful heirs-- that was all he wanted her for.

And there went his good mood.

"Shut up. Get in the ring." Leo spun on his heels and made his way to where the twins stood by the ring. There was no waiting for them to walk in the ring. No, Leo shoved the girls into the ring with Vesta on the left side and Veda on the right. Leo took a step back and deposited his hands in his pockets. The black ring around the girls completely lit up in flames triple their height, burning hot enough to melt their skin off should they choose to touch it. This fire was wicked, unforgiving, it was deadly. "A normal trial would give you 60 seconds to escape. But, there's two of you isn't there? It only seems fair that time gets cut in half."

The flames suddenly shot down the center of the circle and separated the sisters. A large smirk spread on his face again; this would take care of the girls once and for all.

The walk with Cypres was enough to lighten her mood. Their parents were friends and they grew up together, they had countless walks together. Alina was always a sensitive person emotionally and Cy was the one consistent person that could calm the storms she would create. They would walk the citadel grounds and joke around, talk about hopes and dreams, it didn't matter what they talked about so long as she was with him. But he was three years older than her. They started their schooling at different times and were in completely different towers, they hardly saw each other any more and it was just... they drifted apart. Yet to this day he was still able to make her smile, those storm clouds clearing from the sky the further the pair walked.

The only difference was back then the small fae woman would hold onto his hand during their walks. Now that was completely forbidden.

Upon hearing him about the wedding her heart nearly leapt from her chest. It wasn't that Alina was jealous (maybe a little), but Cypres deserved someone who saw past his crown and title. He needed someone to see that bright caring soul, who appreciated him. She wanted him to tuck tail and run from Mari-- everything about that woman was completely fake... though Alina supposed she couldn't say much.

"Ha." Alina rolled her eyes at the thought of wedding planning, least of all with Mari. "Come now, you know my overbearing mother is planning everything. Anything I picked out wasn't good enough. I don't even know my color scheme at this point." She looked up at Cy with a quiet giggle. "Besides, Leo and I are purely a political arraignment. The only time he like me is when he needs a recharge." In which case she charges him nearly a pound of gold. Hey, what could she say? Dragon's liked gold.

Speaking of gold, the sight of Leo and Veda made her heart sink to her stomach. Without a doubt he was going to pour all his mana into this trial, which was the exact thing she wanted to talk him out of this morning. The smile on her face fell and she could just sense this wasn't going to end well. "R-Right..." Alina tried to sound positive, even flashing him a small smile as he touched her head.

The roar of flames sounded as they walked into the arena, Leo's loud announcement to the girls about their shortened time sinking her heart even further. Her brows furrowed and the blonde immediately ran to Leo's side. "Leo what are you doing?! You're supposed to train the girls, not kill them!" Alina looked from Leo to Veda through the flames and felt her stomach do nervous flips. "Rune seriously, you can't let him kill the girls!"

"Right... fiance." The deep grumbling voice was laced in venom, his emerald green eyes glowing for a second as he said the word out loud, his narrowed gaze still fixated on her golden brown orbs. It was odd; Rune was the biggest loner ever since he was a kid, but Marigold? She meant something to him; she deserved better than some Prince with a pretty face. He would never admit it out loud, in fact he went out of his way to avoid her more often than not. Mari was strong, dedicated, passionate. There was no doubt she could take down almost everyone in the arena in heels and a ballgown without batting an eye-- everyone but him. She wasn't the strongest order, or the highest power, but the woman spent endless hours honing her skills. She was always five steps ahead of everyone... again, save for him.

She was also the only one in Ecrela save for the Kings that knew of his darkest secret.

His jaw clenched a couple times as he twirled one of her beautiful golden curls around his index finger. He recalled the day in the arena and the fear of her outing him to everyone, the terror of his life being over before it even began. The only thing that spared him from public execution with his family for being a shadow wielder was his rare order of Basilisk. He could cure any poison, hypnotize individuals, he could perfectly camouflage himself. "Well tell your fiance to show up to training on time and stop drooling over a certain blonde dragon." Had Mari ran and told anyone about him... that would of been the end of him. Yet she stayed. She wanted to stay with him despite him being a monster. They trained until sunrise, and before he was able to thank her, to work up the nerve and kiss her, people began to join them.

It was crickets since then. Just this palpable air between them when they were alone together... which wasn't often. Even still, she deserved so much better than Cy; not that Rune could offer her better than a soon-to-be king. Rune's jaw clenched once more as he worked up the nerve to say anything to her-- literally just ANYTHING, but by the time his mouth opened up Leo was shoving the girls in the circle and lighting the ring ablaze.

The tattoo covered hand dropped from Mari's face and broke their gaze so he could spin on the heels of his combat boots. Leo's intentions churned his stomach, but at the same time... "I'm not going to order him to stop, Alina. If the girls are worthy they'll live. If not, well, we have our answer." Strong muscled arms crossed across his chest and his 6'5" stature shifted slightly from foot to foot. It wasn't the morally just thing to do, but they were fae. Their leaders needed to be resilient in every regard.

Baby girl, Veda could nearly vomit. It took a lot for her to not turn around and clobber him right then and there but thankfully Vesta was finally here and she could have that little bit of comfort. Though before she could even have a single moment to think about anything more before she was shoved forward to stand in the middle of the circle. "Hey!" Veda roared and turned to shove Leo away from her but thankfully she was too slow her her arms would have been singed from the flames that rose all around her. The girl fell back on her ass from the shock, staring up at the intense wall of oranges and red for what felt like a lifetime. Outside the circle she could hear Leo screaming something at them about only having moments to react before the situation turned deadly.

"Vesta!" Veda screamed over the roar of the fire, trying to make sure she was still alive on the other side of the wall that divided them. Through the angry orange lights she couldn't make out anything but she could still feel her twin's energy on the other side. She was okay. That was all Veda kept telling herself. Vesta was okay. Now it was time to try and do something about not dying herself. For a second Veda attempted to summon that feeling that Rune explained to them throughout the week, the feeling of your magic rising to meet you and help you... the issue was as she called to her fire to try and move or slow the flames she simply felt nothing. Water, Veda could always use water, she was good at water... technically it was cheating but wasn't trying to kill them also cheating? As soon as she felt the cooling wave rise within her core a small opening appeared in the outer wall of the fire and she didn't think, she just moved.

Suddenly the scorching heat was much less intense and she could finally feel the wind moving around her face and blowing back her hair. Veda turned back and looked at the roaring fire and let out a small whimper as she realized Vesta was still within the flames. From outside she could realize how truly large it all was, there was no way that she could fight against that, not with fire and not with water... this was too much for their fifth day here.

Veda began to panic, she had to do SOMETHING. Anything. Wildly she looked around and saw the others all just standing there, watching. "What is WRONG with all of you? You're fucking psychopaths!" This wasn't even just Leo, this was all of them. He may have pushed them, he may be doing this... he was doing this. The response came instantly. Veda turned and stared him down as he smirked at the flames, the same cool wave rising again only this time it was with all the power of her rage and fear behind it. With a push of her hand a large wave came from the ground before her and went tunneling towards Leo, crashing into him with a sound that was loud enough to battle out the sounds of the fire behind her. Only when it hit him it didn't stop the flames as she had hoped.

The last thing Vesta expected was to be literally shoved into the circle, least of all away from her sister. They were supposed to tackle these things together, but before she could even move towards Veda the flames were consuming their every exit and shooting down her only path to her sister. Losing Veda was the only thing she ever feared in life and she wasn’t going to do it now.

Vesta couldn’t hear anything past the roaring towering flames. The orange burning wall reflected in those emerald and gold eyes of hers, her freckled splotched face illuminated by the heated light. Everything around her felt… peaceful. The warmth, the heat, it was like a meditation for her. Her twin senses knew that Veda wasn’t sharing in her emotions though and that was her first point of business. As she glanced through the flames a gap appeared on Veda’s side, like the flames were listening to Vesta’s order at releasing her sister. It took her some serious concentration but, it worked.

Only for a second though. As soon as Veda was gone Vesta lost her focus, the gap closed, and she attempted to open a gap for herself. Time was ticking quickly. The fire had completely consumed Veda’s side and was devouring Vesta’s half, and despite every order, every request to the flames they wouldn’t open. It was like she was fighting with someone to open them… Leo. She was fighting with Leo. He wanted her dead and this was how she was going to do it.

Thirty seconds came and went, and the flames consumed every single inch of the circle. On the outside it would appear that Vesta had been lost in the fire trial.

…Only, that would have been far too easy for the heirs. Suddenly the large flames began to whip around, swirling in the air, before every bit of the fire dove into the center of the ring. The heat flicked by Rune, Leo, anyone who was close to the ring felt the intense heat rush by their face until all of the fire had been absorbed by the thing commanding the fire.

Which just so happened to have been a collapsed ginger headed twin in the middle of the now flameless circle. All that was left was an unscathed Vesta and burn marks beneath her, the pattern resembling large feathered wings. Her eyes slowly flicked opened and she sat up to see that she was actually alive still…somehow. “Um… did we pass?” Dark lashes blinked a few times as she looked over to see Veda and the others.

It wasn't that Leo wasn't a good person or anything. He loved his family, his sisters, his people. The man fought in the front lines of the war to keep his people safe, and post war he tended to his people far more than the other heirs did. From helping rebuild homes and communities lost in the battle, making sure his people were fed... Leo may have been conceded but that wasn't his entire personality. He would of had no problem training the girls if it didn't threaten everything. Their lands were still recovering, the political climate was tense already, and the last thing they needed were some royal blooded drama. This was for the best.

However as Alina berated him he felt rage boil inside of him again. That smirk of his fell and he looked down at the small fae woman-- the small fae woman that was supposed to be supporting him no matter what. That was their agreement; they both knew there was no love in this relationship, but they both needed each other. She needed the crown, he needed a wife worthy of the crown. So for her to turn on him despite their agreement stung like a betrayal. He wouldn't stand for that.

"Alina, Alina, Alina..." Leo's deep voice chided Alina before his strong hands forcibly turned the woman to look at him. Even more, his thumb and index finger grasped her chin to make her look up at him so their blue gazes met. "You are to be my wife. I never asked for your advice; you sit there and look pretty. That's it. You give me worthy heirs, I give you a crown and gold. These girls threaten the foundation of everything we know and love; I'm not the only one that wants them gone. Where were you during the war Alina? At home waiting for me?" His light brows narrowed as his gaze went back to the flames, his fingers falling from her face and going back to his pockets. "If and when I want your advice, I'll ask. Don't hold your breath."

The next thing he knew Veda was running from the flames, to which Leo responded by burning the fire hotter and brighter. He couldn't help but feel a tinge of... pride in her for escaping? No-- No. He could still feel someone in the flames fighting him for control. It was Vesta and, Cauldron bless her, he had 26 years of fire experience. She wouldn't beat him. "Congrats on living." His voice was cold, almost irritated.

And when she doused him in an unnaturally large wave he could feel steam rising to his face. Now doused in water the fire in his eyes burned hotter; the flames in the circle giving no heed to the thirty second time frame. "I'll just kill her faster then since you think us to be such monsters." And with that? The entire circle was consumed in the killer flames that no fae, not even him, could survive.

"That's all she wrote kids. One down, one to go." Just as he went to calm the flames he lost control; the fire faded from his eyes and they began to whip around in a swirling vortex. He jumped back in time to prevent his hair from being singed, and as the vortex dove into the center of itself the flames were gone...

Leaving nothing but an unscathed ginger headed twin. Leo's jaw dropped and all he could was stand there wide eyed in his soaked state in shock. "I-I-I... HOW?!"

Veda had always been good at reading people, their emotions, their hidden intentions behind their actions. It had been what made her so good at fooling all those idiot men out of their hard earned cash just for her simply sitting across from them at dinners and bars. So now as she laid against the dusty ground of the arena and stared at Leo with murderous intent, she could feel that he wasn't sadistic and wrathful... he was scared. Leo was just a scared man with no normal way of responding and while it didn't excuse this insanity it made her feel even more pressure to stop this... as if that were possible. The wave only seemed to make him focus more and Veda cursed as she moved to stand, if that didn't work she would literally tackle the asshole. However the moment she stood there was an intense wave of heat from behind her that slid over her back causing her to freeze on spot.

Fear rose so high in her throat that Veda felt as if she may choke on it, that fire... how could anyone survive it? She could still feel Vesta but... maybe her feelings were wrong somehow. The looks on all of the others faces made her feel even more sure that when she turned around she would be met with nothing but ashes. It all happened in a few seconds, faces turning from a soft horror to absolute shock. Veda didn't wait another moment, turning on her heel and staring in awe at her unscathed sister on the ground. "Vesta!" Her feet moved faster than her mind and she got to her side in seconds, falling to her knees in the soot and wrapping her arms tightly around her sister.

"You are all doing such a great job of proving you're not insane. " Veda sobbed, turning her attention from looking over Vesta to staring at the others. "You came and got us! You took us from our lives and brought us here by force. We were FINE. You FORCED us." She felt tears rising to fight their way out and she angrily swallowed, trying to keep herself from crying. "Now this is what you do? We didn't ask for this."

Nothing was going to take the life she built away from her, not even herself. Mari hated the pull she felt that led her to Rune, she couldn't stand how he made her feel and how when she looked at him it felt like she had found someone who understood her. The two hadn't talked much but ever since she met him she could see in his eyes, in his actions, that they looked at the world the same way. Mari's head tilted a fraction of an inch and pressed slightly further into his hand, it was just natural reaction that even she barely noticed until the extra contact made heat rush through her body. Her golden eyes watched him as he spoke, her stomach flipping at his mention of Cy and Alina. Mari couldn't stand Alina for all the same reasons she should hate Rune... they threatened her and Cy's relationship. She just couldn't bring herself to actually hate him so unfortunately the "blonde dragon" got all of her sideways glances and grimaces. Behind her the party was apparently growing and it caused Rune's hand to drop from her face and the lack of that small contact made her bones feel cold.

Mari turned to everyone as Leo shoved the girls into the circle and the flames went high. She would like to say she was shocked but to be honest she really wasn’t. They had all made it clear the girls couldn’t stay and since the war Leo had been more off putting than usual. This just made sense, even if it was insanely twisted. Of course Alina spoke up and tried to call off her fiancé and Mari didn’t miss the reaction their interaction got out of Cypres. However before things could get ugly, one of the twins was bursting from the flames. “V-Veda?” Mari was honestly confused, Vesta had the higher strength reading in fire and if anyone were to get away from this is should have been the other twin.

Things moved fast after that from the wave to the near explosion of the wave. Before Mari could fully comprehend what had happened she was zoning in on Veda as she clung to her sister and screamed at them. Mari nearly blacked out as her eyes turned a dark gold, narrowing into slits as she glared at the twins. This was exactly why they needed to go home, to their human home. They would never understand this world. “You think we wanted you here?” She spit the words out like pure venom. “You simply being here is turning all of our lives upside down. Ruining things. We don’t want you. We are not the people who came and got you from your sad little hovel. We too are being forced to deal with this situation and if you are too weak to handle this? Much more will be at stake than your MEASLY little lives.”

“We are a nation coming off of a recent war that nearly destroyed us. We are still dealing with dangers every day and your arrival has made things so much harder. This isn’t fucking playtime, this is testing you to lead a land and its people.” Mari could feel her body shaking as she swept her arm towards Rune, “He is our greatest battle mentor here and he’s having to waste his time on you! And both Leo and Cy should be dealing with more important shit than this!”

“LEO! What in the heavens is wrong with you?" Matteo yelled in pure shock, his eyes going from wide orbs of surprise to pure horror. This took him so quickly back to that day at his home, to when they locked his family in the flames. Obviously he didn’t know the girls that well yet but it didn’t matter, he knew two lives were inside of those flames… two lives that didn’t deserve this whatsoever. Alina was trying to get Rune to make Leo stop and that made a short lived moment of calm move through Matteo. “What do you mean you won’t stop it?” The man stared at Rune with his hands balled in fists at his sides, “This is no where near a normal trial and we all fucking know it! He’s going to kill them Rune.”

Matteo turned back to the fire and pushed his own control towards it only to be ricocheted back by Leo. That was to be expected… but how could he just sit here and watch this? A second later Veda came tumbling out and Matteo gave her a small cheer before realizing that Vesta wasn’t directly behind her. Veda took her fight to Leo but Matteo couldn’t tear his eyes away from the tower of flames. “Come on Vee.” He spoke the words softly to himself as he watched for any sign of movement but the fire just continued to roar. It felt like he stared at the intense orange for hours before it finally began to sway in on itself. At first he thought it was Vesta making another exit but then he realized the fire was quite literally curling in on itself. Leo was actually going to kill her. Matteo reached out again with his own strength but before he could focus everything burst in on itself and he had to quickly toss up a hand to protect his eyes from the rush of heat.

When Matteo lifted his hand he instantly saw her laying against the ground, a pile of ashes laying around her in swirls. No not swirls… his dark eyes went wide and he moved without thinking. Veda had tumbled to her sister on one side and Matteo moved towards the other, quickly dragging his feet through the wing pattern in the soot and hoping no one else saw it. There was no way he would trust these people with that information after what had happened just now… plus he needed to do some searching before confirming he was right. Phoenix were extinct… or they were since the death of the monarchy. However, it was very possible for Vesta to have taken after their father. But knowing that the twins had all four elements had already turned these people into monsters, imagine what learning that at least one of them was the last surviving phoenix would do. “Vesta are you okay? My stars woman. Of course this means you passed. Right?” On the last bit he turned and growled towards Rune as Veda and Mari went at each other.

"Veda was the first twin to escape the flames, no doubt thanks to Vesta. Veda gave it a solid attempt to distract Leo with a sudden wave of water, one that quirked Rune's brow in interest, but this was Leo. All it did was egg him on even more. He knew Leo wasn't a bad person and he just wanted to protect his people; the last few years he had been on and off of the front lines to help out. It wasn't like he ever transformed or used his shadows, but Rune still had his earth abilities. He was still able to counteract any poison so he saved as many lives as he could. Leo's hands, however, were stained with far more blood than Runes did. This... this was just best for everyone.

Emerald orbs narrowed at his protege as he argued against him. He didn't like to be questioned, least of all by the man who was tasked to him. He understood where Matteo was coming from so he bit his lip... for now, at least.

The fire went out of control, so much so that Rune was whipped with a lash of fire against his exposed forearm. It left second degree burns on him that didn't even make him flinch. Somehow Vesta was still alive, and before anyone could react Veda and Matteo were running to her side. Veda was then exploding and arguing with Marie, Cypres was tackling Leo, and Mari was about to wolf out.

What did he get himself into?

"Marigold." That deep rumbling voice of his finally spoke up, the normally demanding voice gentle, his stern gaze softening as he approached her. This woman fought so hard to get to where she was in life, she knew how hard their nation had to fight to keep this peace. And hearing her words about him? It made that thing in his chest ache. His first matter of business was to calm Mari so she didn't go full wolf and murder the girls with her own paws since Cy was too busy neglecting her to handle Leo. His warm hand went to the back of her hair, smoothed it down until his hand was drifting to her back and rubbed soothing circles in hopes to calm her down. "Breath." It didn't come out as an order but more as a suggestion.

"Cy is right." His voice was back to that authoritative voice of his as he looked back towards the others. "A history lesson will serve the girls well-- but the trials will continue as planned. Tomorrow is Mari's aqua trial. And, yes. You girls passed the ignis trial." His gaze narrowed towards Matteo as he silently warned him to watch himself. "Matteo. You're so all knowing about the old monarchy. How about you come up with a lesson plan for them after the trials? Other than that we're dismissed for the day."

Alina couldn't help the tears that stung in her eyes as she watched the circle burn, and burn, and burn. Matteo was the only one that was on her side; it didn't matter that the girls threatened everything they knew and loved, they didn't deserve this. No one was on their side though. And to make matters worse? Leo was snatching up her chin in front of everyone and laying into her. Alina bit back the tears that threatened to spill, her glossy blues looking directly into Leo's as he spoke words that she had heard before. There was no need for a storm-- Alina had accepted her role at his side as his quiet bride, nothing more nothing less. What other option did she have? "Understood."

Leo dropped her chin and utterly dismissed her and Alina stood there solemnly, her eyes falling to the floor once Veda made her exit. There was no time for Vesta to make it out despite the water Veda doused Leo with, and the small storm dragon couldn't bare to look at Veda. 'I tried.' But she didn't succeed. Vesta was dead because of Leo, because she wasn't brave enough to put her foot down with the man, because--

The fire died down and Leo was in pure shock. It perked up Alina's attention to see Vesta was alive and well. Veda and Mari were laying into each other, and before Alina could attempt to resolve the issue Cy of all people were tackling Leo to the ground. "C-Cy!" Her blue eyes widened yet she didn't make a move to pull him off. Her heart skipped several beats, she had only seen him ever lose his cool like that when they were younger. When an older fae boy bullied Alina and Cy found out. But that was years ago-- why was he still coming to her defense?

They met each others eyes and immediately her face heated. With a small bashful smile she gave a nod and mouthed the words 'thank you', before making her way over to the mud covered Leo to offer him a manicured hand. He was still her responsibility, she was still to stand by him no matter what. "Come on. I'll make you that tea that helps you sleep."

To be honest it was taking the copper haired twin a minute to reorient herself. Her body was buzzing from the exposure to all that fire, and if it wasn't for the tearful Veda running to her side she would've been in a rather good mood. "It's okay Veda, really. We just prove them wrong every step of the way." Vesta offered her sister a confident smile, doing her best to be the positive sister for once. She wasn't mad at Leo-- far from it. Vesta would tackle that trial again if given the option, just without Veda. Her arms wrapped around her sister and hugged her tight, trying her best to comfort her.

Her attention pulled from Veda for a moment when Matteo dragged his foot through... soot? What was that for? Those green orbs of hers had more golden specks in them as she glanced up at him with a curious expression. "Yeah I- I feel great, actually." There was even a glow to her freckled skin she felt so good. Slowly she stood to her feet and helped Vida stand up before looking between Matteo and Rune, and then to Veda and Mari. If there was anything putting a damper on her good mood it was Mari.

"Yeah yeah, I get no one wants us here. We're here though and we're not quitters. We'll take your trials and prove you wrong. I'll make sure no one has to go through any unfair trial ever again." Awfully cocky after just one trial but, dammit she was getting fed up with these people. Matteo's torturous trial, now the girls? No way. This shit ended with them.

"How about we go grab some lunch? I'm starved." Vesta looked from Veda to Matteo with a smile, like she didn't just almost die.

While Leo processed the fact that Vesta actually lived through the impossible Mari and Veda were going in on each other. Veda was crying, or, she was about to. There was a quiver in her voice as she yelled at the lot of them and he couldn't help but fold his arms over his chest defensively, bracing himself for the pain her words inflicted. If it was up to him he'd send the girls back but they were denied that option, told to groom the girls into leaders or weed them out. Neither of the choices were fair to any of them or their people!

But before he could form any words he was being tackled straight into the mud behind him, instantly setting him off into an even worse mood. "Oh FUCK you Cypres! How about you get your own house in order before you go barking at mine?" Leo flashed his elongated canines at Cy in anger, though admittedly he knew he was right. If anything Alina was his best friend, his only friend. She was by his side no matter what offering him advice, looking out for him. But she wasn't thinking the big picture here! She didn't fight in the war!

Cy got off of him and Leo laid back in the mud with a low groan, his blue eyes just staring up at the sun high in the sky. That is, until Alina approached him with her hand out to help him, offering him that special herbal tea that helped him sleep. After the war Leo could feel that he was a different person and half expected Alina to leave him, but she didn't. She stayed and helped him no matter what. Shouldn't she of all people see why he was being so hard on the twins?

With a low growl he took hold of her hand and stood to his feet. He looked back at Veda and for a moment a sad, apologetic look took over his expression. However he said nothing, wrapped his arm around Alina, and shot a glare over at Cy as he led Alina out of the arena. She'd be the one handling the air trial, he just needed to get her on board.

Veda watched them all silently, her eyes moving slowly over the whole group as they widened slightly. Everyone here was so mixed up and confused, she could see it now as clear as day. They were all traumatized from this war and the world they live in and it was leading to this insanity. Veda could see the looks between some of them, Rune and Mari… and what Cy did to Leo because of Alina. They were all ignoring their personal truths for this stupid throne! Was all this really worth this misery?

-
The next task had been originally planned for the next day but due to Leo literally nearly killing the girls, Rune agreed to let them focus on training more and taking their lessons with Matteo for a week. So that’s what they did, the twins found themselves training with Rune in the morning and then heading to Ignis tower with Matteo to study. Vesta was coming along in this world much faster than Veda, it was like something in her had woken in that trial and things were just clicking. Veda was so proud of her sister, watching her come into her own and glow like she was, was amazing but Veda had to admit she felt like was getting left behind a bit. “Hey it’s getting late guys, I’m going to head back to get something to eat before bed. Rune said tomorrow we need to head out stupid early for the water trial.” Veda groaned as she packed up her notebooks and fancy new Atlas into her bag. Apparently the Atlas’ were like this realms cell phone? It was absolutely insane to think about magic and social media combining like this but she had to admit it was kind of fun to scroll on. Plus this gave her a way to talk to Vesta despite being separated.

Veda waved quickly to them before standing from the table and making her way out of the tower. It was already dark outside, the stars shining bright above her. The air was slightly chilled and about halfway across the courtyard she stopped and started upwards to take it all in. She had always felt more comfortable in the night and weather like this was her absolute favorite. Her eyes fell shut and she took in a few long breaths, for once around here everything seemed so calm and she was happy for it. It wasn’t just the heirs and Rune that were intense, everyone around here was dramatic and high strung, it was a hard to ignore all that intensity.

As she mentally prepared herself to head back and likely be met with Mari, she heard a noise off to her left near the gardens. “Hello?” Vesta peered through the darkness but couldn’t see anyone, but she could FEEL someone there and they felt… it felt like they were in pain. Without really thinking Veda moved forward towards the sound. “Anyone there?”

This was already a fucking headache and Mari was about ready to lose her fucking mind over it. After her full blown meltdown at the twins and the emotional turmoil of needing Rune to calm her down in front of everyone… It had sent her into a tailspin this last week of deciding what to do for this upcoming trial. Part of her had been so angry that she considered simply turning the pool into a swirling death pit but that was too easily avoidable and it was too easily tracked back to her. So instead she spent the week watching the others around the citadel training, it was home of the academy’s elite whether they were bound for battle or parliamentary positions… the people here were talented. That was how she found Jaera, a talented yet sneaky werewolf who held mostly air but secondary water. A girl who was clearly in this for the fame and riches… a girl who was easily bought into Mari’s plan. However Cy witnessed this interaction and the two had been arguing all damn day at this point. “Drop it okay! I’m not doing anything different than what we all agreed on. These girls will not have it easy. Jaera knows to back off before they get killed, I’m not some psycho like Leo.” Mari scoffed as she angrily pulled on her shoes, glaring at Cy where he sat with his back to her at his desk. He couldn’t even turn around and give her the time of day to scold her like he was! That was the most aggravating part of it all. “I’m sleeping in Aqua tonight, see you tomorrow.”

With that Mari slammed the door to Cy’s large room at the top floor of Terra’s looking mountain of a barrack. As she stormed down the hall a few others quickly turned away from her or closed the doors to their own quarters. Good. Mari was glad that people knew to stay out of her way when she was like this. Honestly she didn’t even know where she was going until her feet hit the door on the bottom floor, the large room to the back of the cavernous building. Mari pulled back her fist and slammed on the door twice before yelling out, “I’m coming in!” She tested the door knob and found it unlocked and burst into the room before closing it behind her with a bang.

Mari had only been in Runes quarters once before, it housed his living space as well as a small personal training room and as was expected, she heard him in the training area. “Why are you even working with the brat twins?” She exclaimed suddenly as she moved through the entrance to the room, sending a blast of water to the back of the man with a growl. She knew her anger was misplaced but… she also knew he could take it. Rune could handle her. “They’re actively ruining everything we have all worked for and you’re just going to give them breaks? My trial should have been days ago but since they could barely handle Leo you made me wait. Why should we have to cater to girls who are incapable of taking the throne? It’s bullshit that they’re even being considered.”

“There are ways to go about these things with some sense of diplomacy that don’t require violence.” Cypres groaned as he leaned against his desk, his elbows rested against the mahogany and his head rested in his hands. As if the issues here weren’t enough he was now dealing with the fun of correspondence from both of his parents, although it was about vastly different subjects; his mother was upset with his lack of enthusiasm for wedding planning and his father was upset that the twins had yet to return home. At this point he would honestly rather be diving into choosing wedding china and dinner menus but… he just couldn’t put his heart into it. “Just because you don’t intend to kill them Mari doesn’t mean this is right. Making it difficult is understandable, making it unfair is another.” As Cy moved to turn around he saw the door slamming, lovely he was sure his neighbors would love that.

The man stood from his desk and moved to the window, opening it to get some fresh air into the room that suddenly seemed so suffocating. Cy pulled out his Atlas and pressed at the screen until he found Alina’s contact and opened the message. Ever since what happened at Leo’s trial he had been checking in with her more often than usual to make sure Leo was leaving her alone. It was bullshit what the guy said to her and even worse that Leo expected Alina to be a bloodbag for him after the way he treated her so Cy was proud of her for refusing the fucker.

Still making our resident leech suffer for his actions?”

Cy smirked as he hit the send button, staring at the photo on her contact for a long moment before deciding to send out another.

If you’re not already in bed, I could use some fresh air if you’re up for a walk? Mari didn’t seem to want to spend more time with me this fine evening.”

“That should do it for tonight, honestly I think you guys have the gift of what’s important at least for now, basically we just finished a war within the last five years and don’t mention the shadow realm to anyone unless you want to be met with a lot of issues.” Matteo ran a hand through his long hair as he finished up, this should suffice as the girls history lessons for now . There was far too much to teach them in a week but if he could at least give them enough information to avoid another stand off like the other night? Matteo would count that as a win for them. He watched as Veda collected her things to set out for the night and he gave her a sorry smile, he could tell every time she left here she wasn’t very happy about being separated from Vesta. There were no real rules about intermingling in different houses but getting into any of the towers required the use of the element on the door to enter, that and the leadership here really looked down upon people sleeping in other rooms. Of course that rule had always been ignored for the heirs and other members of the rich and famous crew. But Rune had made is clear for some reason that the twins were to try and thrive separately. “Oh okay, sure you don’t want to hang with us a little longer and get something from the kitchen here?” Matteo shot a look towards Vesta and gave her a little wink before turning to watch as Veda waved them off and made her way to the door.

“Well, what about you Vee? We have some time before we should hit the hay, want to go raid the kitchens and plan another mosquito heist?” He nudged the girl in the seat besides him with his elbow, waggling his brows before standing up and neatening up all the items of the table and grabbing his jacket from the back of his chair. He had to admit that trying to spend more time with Vesta was purely selfish on his part, she was so much fun to be around and just a complete breath of fresh air in this place. Plus he had been trying to work up the nerve to talk to her about what he saw in the soot the day of the ignis trial. “And if you wanted, we could also talk some more about the orders and such. I mean only if you wanted.”

Once a General in the war, a powerful battle mentor before and after that, and now? Now Rune was a babysitter. The Fae naturally wanted to kill people that threatened their livelihood; it was in their genes to kill something that got in their way. The heirs weren't even a guarantee! Anyone could challenge them, kill them or make them concede and then they'd lose the crown. While he could see why everyone was getting so frustrated with the twins, the point was moot. The twins live and they take the crown, they lose and they die. As of now he could only see one of the twins truly becoming one with the fae and that was Vesta.

Rune was busying himself training in his private quarters, having taken to training there after the incident with Mari. The towering man was shirtless with his dark hair tied in a bun, beads of sweat dripping off of his chest as he fought an invisible opponent in the medium sized training room. Not enough space to go full Basilisk, but plenty of space to exert some energy.

Mari was barging into his room and attempting to assault him with a blast of water but the shadows of the room quickly formed a wall that siphoned her water. The shadows directed the water towards the potion making plants he had tucked far in the corner. Rune was literally always ready to handle anything she threw at him; nothing about Mari scared him, he was probably the only person immune to her sneer.

"I've asked the higherups to send them back and I was told no. From the sounds of things they want the monarchy back, hence why they scoured the realms until they found the twins." Rune's gruff voice responded as he grabbed a towel and wiped the sweat off his brow and his muscular, scarred chest. It'd be the first time Mari saw Rune topless and the countless scars on his chest and arms. Rune's order was unknown to everyone, even Mari, but pain was the only thing that could charge a basilisk. Physically and emotionally.

"I don't cater to anyone, Mari. Your right, your trial should've been days ago. We should exhibit some patience with them though. 21 years with suppressed powers while we've been training all our lives, they're going to need more than a week. They'll fail regardless. They'll need to fight all the heirs, there's no way they'll win." Rune shot her a more gentle look, though the stubborn man still didn't smile. "...Want a drink? It always helps me after a long day." He moved past her and straight to his living quarters to pour two glasses of whiskey. "Or I'm sure you could go to Alina for a nice chat... she might offer you some tea."

Were all dragons bitches or just his?

After the flaming vortex Alina walked him back to his room. She made him the tea that helped him rest, and just when he was about to bite her she turned him down. Which was normal, she usually turned him down at least once, but gold always worked on her. This time it didn't. So he tried the next day, and the next day, and the next. Leo could feel his magic supplies drying up and he was parched. Like a dragon needed gold, like a wolf need the moon, Leo needed blood. For the past two years he had been exclusively feeding off of Alina because of how powerful the small dragon was and now? Now she was going to let him starve to death!

It had made him far more cranky than usual. Vesta was getting stronger every day and it pissed him off beyond words. Veda? He was starting to feel bad for the girl. It was clear that she was the more sensitive twin and she wasn't progressing as far as Vesta was. Call it the starvation or the fact that Alina wasn't conversing much with him, but, he could tell that she was having a difficult time adjusting. He felt bad for her. Again though he was pretty sure that was the starvation.

After another fight with Alina he took a long walk out in the gardens. The night sky always relaxed him, it was the only time in the war that things felt peaceful. So there he was pacing the white gazebo in the garden, blue orbs staring absentmindedly on the wooden floor and kicking any rocks or twigs that he came across. There were visible bags underneath his usual vivid eyes and overall the man just looked exhausted. The breeze brought in several floral scents, though there was one scent that stood out.

As if on cue he could hear Veda's voice and he gave a small sigh. Everything hurt and he wasn't up for a fight right now. "It's just me Veda." Not that Veda would take any comfort in seeing him, not after all the trouble he had caused her. Even still, there was a noticeable change in his voice, like he was indeed hurt. Leo stopped pacing and took a could steps off of the gazebo so he could walk the stone path a few feet so he was underneath the moonlight. Even his blonde locks had lost their luster, his pale skin now almost sickly pale.

"Veda, I'm--" Leo paused for a second as if he was contemplating what he was going to say. After a moment of silence he sighed and ran his fingers through his hair. "I'm sorry. Okay? I was too hard on you girls. I'm getting pressure from the other heirs and I'm terrified of another war. My number one priority is my people and I took that fear out on you guys. Ironic considering that I'm going to starve to death before I even get the chance to lead the people."

'Honestly I'm still confused about the whole shadow realm thing but I'll hold my questions until next session." Vesta sat on the same loveseat with Veda doodling in her notebook. The past week the copper haired twin felt like a new woman. She felt stronger, her hair and freckled skin had an almost fae like glow to it, and for the first time in her life she felt like things made sense. She even made a friend! It made her feel guilty that Veda was having a rough time. Not that her sister verbalized it, but her twin instincts knew.

"Night Veda. See you in the morning." Vesta shot a small smile over at her twin as left. Tomorrow was the aqua trial. Veda was best aligned with water so she hoped that it would uplift her like the ignis trial did for her. If not, well, she'd have to think of some other way to cheer up her sister. If she had too she'd take Veda and jump through some random portal just to escape and make her happy... not that Vesta wanted to do that. She liked this place, she liked how she felt, she liked Matteo. Again, not that Vesta would ever say anything.

Vesta pulled out her atlus to shoot Veda a text a cute cat gif just as Matteo said her name, her gaze drifting up to him with a curious raise of her brow. He was the only person besides Veda that called her Vee, not that many other people talked to her. She was always the invisible twin back in the human world. "Oh I would love to teach you how to rob the rich blind but I'm sure you're in enough trouble with drill sergeant Rune." Lilly teased Matteo as she stood to her feet and stretched with a quiet yawn. She liked being around him; it felt natural, he was fun to be around, and she trusted him.

"Yeah yeah, the order thing. So I was doing some research and I'm thinking maybe I'm a dragon. It'd explain the fire, and I would get some cool wings. Wait-- are Orders genetic? What were our parents orders? Please tell me one of them had wings That's my only request." Vesta nudged him playfully with her arm as the two of them entered the kitchen. "Speaking of, what's your order? Mari's a cranky wolf, Alina's a uh, storm dragon from all her thundering mood swings. Obviously we have mosquito. What are you Matteo?"

It was Alina's job to stand by Leo's side but that didn't mean she had to let him feed off of her. There were other people in the world to feed from. If it hadn't been for Cy checking in with her daily she wasn't sure she'd of been able to stay strong; she had changed her entire personality to suit Leo's wants and needs when they got together, she had forgotten what a strong woman she used to be. The last week she felt like she was beginning to see a sparkle of that old Alina come back and, honestly, she didn't know if that was a good or bad thing.

So she did everything she could to avoid Leo, hence why she was staying in the Aqua tower more often. She was sitting in her room staring out at the moon from the chair in her room when she felt her atlus vibrate. Seeing it was Cy made her smile.

"He can get another blood bag. Meet in five?💙"

Sending hearts to an engaged man probably wasn't the most appropriate thing to do but... it was Cy. He'd never think of her any more than his friend, as painful of a reality as it was. He liked Mari and no matter how hard Alina could try she'd never be anything like her wolf aqua counterpart. Alina quickly got up and fluffed out her perfect wavy platinum locks in the mirror. She adjusted her black leather jacket, her white crop top and tight black shorts that showed off those pearlescent purple scales of hers. Maybe he didn't like scales?

Before she could get too self conscious she bounced out of the private suite, down the tower, and straight to the Terra tower. "You're telling me she didn't want to pick out fine china for the wedding? What'd you do to make her mad this time?" The playful smile on her face quickly fell as soon as she looked over his face. "You okay Cy? You look sad." Which may have been why he wanted a walk.

"Want to talk about it?"

21.Gemini.Currently Unknown Order. All Four.

Leo was quite possibly the last person she hoped to come across out here in the dark of night but thankfully she could tell just by looking at him that he wasn't going to attack her. "Well, you look like shit." Veda said with a bit of a smirk behind it, serves him fucking right for the way he had treated them, hell the way he treated everyone. Alina was his fiance and even she got treated like some second rate citizen by this asshole. She walked up the few short steps to the deck of the gazebo, it was honestly a wonder to her why she didn't just turn around and head back to aqua but something about him was off and it intrigued her. She placed her satchel on the bench but stayed standing while she looked him over, it would have been a lie to say he was ever ugly but right now you could tell by looking at him that he was unwell.

At first his apology made her want to spit in his face, but then she realized that while it was extreme, it was the same principle of her and Vesta doing whatever it took to protect each other and survive... although it also really wasn't. "Oh cry me a river Mosquito boy." Veda rolled her eyes and sat down across from him with a soft thud on the wood. She should walk away. She knew that. "Any sort of leadership that begins with questionable actions is on a slippery slope. So what, you kill us and tell yourself it was for the better good? What's next, what's to stop you from continuing down the path of just constantly murdering people who you don't think are worthy?" A scoff escaped her lips and it felt like bile was rising in her throat, "You haven't even given us a chance, saying this is about you guys wanting to protect your people and making martyrs of yourselves is a god damn lie. That might be part of it, the part that you're choosing to hide behind, but the truth is that you don't want to give up your power. I would respect you more if you admitted that to me, and yourself." There was no way they could know who was best for this realm within hours of meeting the girls, they were probably right... Vesta and Veda were new here and honestly unfit to lead themselves let alone an entire nation. But that wasn't the point, the point was they didn't know. They just got scared of their power being taken from them and acted upon that knee jerk reaction. Veda couldn't blame them really, but she wouldn't forgive anyone for trying to hurt her or Vesta.

Veda stood, brushing her hair back and out of her face as she eyed him from a few feet away. "So, I accept your apology and hope we can both learn from all of this." She walked a bit and picked back up her bag, leaning down to be face to face with him as she spoke. "Vesta and I are just trying our best and while you guys think we should be thrilled to be pulled into this new magical world and be handed this opportunity, please remember that our lives are also getting turned upside down. Shockingly this isn't just about you heirs and your ... fiancés." She said the last word with a hint of a hiss, hes eyes squinting the smallest bit to imply her noticing the strange dynamic between them all. "We got through your trial and Matteo is a member of Ignis house, maybe it's for the best that you busy yourself with something besides the training you've been told to help with. It would be best for everyone."

Was it technically uncouth that Cy spent as much time and attention as he did on Alina? Probably. But she was the one thing he refused to let his position get in the way of, if they couldn’t be more than friends then he would make damn sure he was a good friend. Plus having her around was about the only thing that kept him sane nowadays, with all the stress she was always a little bit of a light for him. Cy smiled down at his Atlas as he got the message back, setting it down on the windowsill before rummaging through his dresser for a hoodie and yanking it on before retrieving the tech once more.

It didn’t take long to find Alina outside of Terra tower, then the two of them found a quiet place along the citadel wall to lean against and watch the sky. She was the first to break the silence, not that it was an uncomfortable one. “Eh, it’s honestly not even Mari. It’s my fucking mother. She’s so worried about this not being the event of the year, she’s even taken to reaching out to Leo’s mother to discuss making sure we don’t outshine each other and pick different dates… different seasons… different colors. It’s absolute insanity.” Cy sighed and pressed his head against the cool stone of the wall, resting his hands in his lap as he turned his attention from the sky above to the woman sitting next to him. She was so easy to talk to, they had always been like this and despite time apart they always picked up where they left off. “That and my father being on my ass about handling the whole twin situation.”

Cy gave Alina a weak smile and shook his head slightly. Life would be so much simpler if he could just be given the freedom and respect to handle things the way he wanted them handled. Those girls wanted nothing to do with this place so they shouldn’t have even gone looking for them. Mari and him weren’t in love so they shouldn’t be together. Leo and Alina weren’t in love… or at least that’s what Cy told himself to be okay with the fact that they were together to begin with… they shouldn’t be together. If all this bureaucracy bullshit would go away life would be so much better and people would be happy and safe.

“What about you kid? Not letting Leo…” Cy’s voice faded as he thought about it, vampires drinking from people wasn’t new to him in the slightest but from what he heard it was both painful and intimate at the same time, depending on the bloodsucker. The idea of Leo and Alina always made his fucking skin crawl and it was hard to even use the words to bring it up. “Normally you fold after a few days, he must have really pissed you off this time eh?”

“They mostly are, sometimes a child can take a random variation and come out of nowhere with their order but that’s more for lower level fae like pegasus and what not.” Matteo shrugged at a feeble attempt at nonchalant conversation but in reality he was sweating. Honestly it was so exciting that Vesta was a pheonix! But the heirs were already acting like idiots that it made him worried for her to be so rare and special… even if she was that way even without her order. “Your mother was a siren, a lot of people actually say she was the reason your father was so successful with his professional relationships and close friends. Your father however was special, different in his own way. In a good way!” He stammered as he worked through the words, shoving a hand through his hair as he looked back at the red head nervously. “And he DID have wings.”The two of them made their way to the kitchen and Matteo pulled some things from the pantry and fridge to make the two of them sandwiches. Normally there were workers around but with how late it was it appeared they had gone to bed, the place was nearly empty save for a few other people who must have had the same idea for a midnight snack.

“I’m an incubus.” Matteo spread some mayonnaise over the bread as he spoke, avoiding her gaze as he continued. “So that basically means I get wings too.” People in their world understood the orders, had learned about them from a young age, but to someone new to this world he could only image that hearing how he recharged his magic would be offputting. “And you’re correct on Mari and Leo, grumpy wolf and mosquito are the best ways to explain those two. Alina is a dragon as well, good guess. For the record, Cy is a Nemean lion which is a fancy way of saying he’s obsessed with pride and likes laying in the sun like a house cat.” He was trying his best to make it all seem normal and come off in a joking tone. Vesta seemed to be handling all of these new things better than her sister so maybe this would all go over fine. “And I don’t think that dragon is a bad guess for you, but I have to assume no scales have made an appearance right?” He finally looked up at her as he finished the sandwiches and slid one over to her before leaning against the counter and taking a large bite.

“I think you take after your father, I’ve had the impression since your trial but wanted to see how things progressed to make sure I was right before mentioning it. Your father was the last of his kind and when he passed everyone kind of assumed the order was extinct… but that spot around you after the fire imploded was almost a sure sign that you took after him.” Matteo glanced around to see if anyone was within earshot and of course if any fae around a hundred foot radius chose to pay attention they COULD hear… but it seemed they were all distracted with their own lives. “I think you’re a phoenix Vesta, and I wouldn’t tell anyone about it right now until they discover for themselves. Until you’re more in control of your power.”
