Fallout based Nationbuilding

I am actually a Mormon and we actually don't have all that many kids. Most people only have around 3-5 give or take a little

They ARE Mormons who, like traditional Catholics, have lots of fucking children, oodles of them.

But they would be inbred a bit. They would need outsiders to add to the gene pool, and these outsiders wouldn't be accustomed to their medical practices or culture. Possibly their religion.

A male outsider would think that a baby is dangerous to have. Since it could kill the mother, and take a woman largely out of the workforce and militia. A female outsider would be much the same.

And as for my country they would probably allow non Mormons to join them but I'm also thinking that most would assimilate into the majority culture over time and probably convert. And they probably would have a pretty high birth rate too.

Historically families are larger the more unadvanced their country is. Families need more hands to do work, women don't have access to birth control and often aren't as educated. Lots of people die, so lots of people have babies to maintain the population.

'Eh I mean no offence, but traditionally or historically it was the way, likely taking from the old catholic way of doing things, although many postulate that its just to out number the other religions I feel like that would be far too long term an aim for one of the corrupt popes they had so I doubt it but hey. I just believe in everything and nothing

True, but if they kept a healthy birthrate inbreeding would be massively diminished and its generally accepted that second cousin marriages arnt actually that bad, even 1st cousin ones. The only ones with dangerous short term effects are really siblings, and even then it could take a couple generations for large scale effects.

And just asking but are all Vault dwellers inbred? Because of the limited population in isolation?

probably not, to keep a steady population of around 500-1000 i'd imagine, especially if starting with a generic american basis, that they would have a varied enough genepool.

So we're talking about 6,000ish to 11,000ish. Be more conservative about this, since every settlement is going to be harassed by the White Legs and 80s tribes. They're going to kill a lot of your people. The war with the Brotherhood probably killed a few hundred Mormons, unless you found a creative way to kill them all.

But these are Mormons. They have values.

Incest is deeply frowned upon in Mormonism. So I doubt they would intentionally marry people they are related to unless there was not enough people.

And they did spend 113 years in a Vault. Either they're on the older side and don't have that many kids, or they sorta went against their values.

I imagine it would be, its pretty universal actually, once upon a time there were a few religions and cultures that were pretty pro incest but pretty sure non of those have had decent followings for over a 1000 years

Yah so probably they had a little incest due to the limited gene pool then. But not like they went out of their way to marry their cousins.

So you would probably not have that many people in the vault. I'm guessing 400-600ish were the first vault dwellers. Then you have 113 years of genetic five minutes in heaven.

Getting out of the vault you'll have 500-900 people. Mostly on the older side due to the limited gene pool.

Pat at first when you called the vault dwellers inbred I thought you were insulting Mormons but then I realized that there would be a limited amount of people in isolation for hundreds of years and I realized that it is just a fact that at least some of those people married a cousin.

Remember though, wastelanders would all be mutated to some degree. While making love to an outsider would be preferable to sexing up their cousin, people would be turned off when they see the new guy or gal in town has an extra set of teeth or one more toe than usual.

True that. Then again some mutations are more bearable than others. Most people could probably live with a person with an extra toe or something but it would be considerably harder if they had something like an extra foot on their back.

These people would also be filthy, and they would not really ideologically mesh with the Mormons very well. They probably use drugs, don't care as much about gender when it comes to love, they might not even understand the concept of marriage.

They would just be very different. They would gamble, they wouldn't raise an eye at prostitution, and some of them might even believe in tribalistic gods.

And are about as clean as a puddle of mud... Thats one thing Vault Dwellers are good at, personal hygiene and the like... I would imagine, even if they largely leave the vault, they would still have high standards in that regard, brought down after the prewar life and not needing to fight for survival. While it would begin to degrade over the years after they leave I wouldn't imagine it would do so very fast. Especially since they get their fertile GECK lands and stuff, allowing for higher standards

It might even cause resentment towards these "prudish" vault dwellers. I'm pretty sure that a lot of these Mormons would feel pretty bad for the outsiders. They might try to teach them to live the way they do or try to help them out but It probably would be hard at first.
