"Sure I don't mind" she says. She looks at her feet fora couple moments and then looks to the sky. She really wanted to scream and let her anger out or punch something. She knew she couldn't, she needed to stay sane, she needed to keep her cool. She doesn't notice her hands ball into fists but she keeps her emotions from showing on her face. She couldn't break right now. She was mad but she wouldn't let it show. She relaxes her hand. She kind of wanted to get a move on so she wouldn't have time to think, she wanted to stay distracted but she just focused on the star. She doesn't know realize she is zoned out, not noticing anything around her.
"Something the matter?" said Jake, not even having to look at her to be able to tell something was wrong. This was the first and longest amount of time he'd talked to anyone in a game. I guess that was the fun thing about MMO's, is that you could meet someone one day and be friends. He began walking into the forest, stopping to look back at Kate, wondering if she'd follow him and let him do at least one. . .One good thing for someone to ease his conscious. "You coming?"

"No, I'm fine" she says a voice bringing her out of her thoughts. She doesn't notice him starting to walk away. "Yeah" she says after a couple seconds. She starts walking towards him. She follows next to him silently. She just starts to think of what her life is going to mean for however long she was going to be I this game of death. She keeps her head down not really wanting to talk. She brings her hood over her head once again.

"There's a town nearby and with it a forest nearby with higher level monsters if you want to check that out in the morning" said Jake, spinning his sword in his hand for something to do. Not like there wasn't anything else to do other than go around fighting in a game that'd take forever to beat. . .Such a drag, and quite a damner.

She simply nods at his suggestion as they keep walking. They walk for a while before the town comes into view. They walk into the town. "So, any idea where a cheap inn is?" She asks finally talking. They stop in the middle of the town. She looks around. It seemed like a little place with a few places to eat and a few places to stay. There is a small fountain in the center of town and not much to the town. It was pretty small.

"Yeah, if this is anything like the beta it should be near the east side" said Jake, keeping his voice low so only she could hear. No need for any unwanted attention and alot of people would kill to try and get someones items that were better than their's. Walking through the town it became quite that you could hear a pin drop, so silent and peaceful. To think all of this was a game. . . For him this would only last for a day but he knew he had to do it, it just wasn't meant to be perhaps.

She continues walking beside him. She still doesn't say much. Her foot catches a stone and she face plants. She starts laughing as she gets up. "Im sorry, I'm really a klutz." she says finally regaining her balance. The game must not fix her clumsiness. she starts walking with him again.

@Veyd Sahvoz
Jake couldn't help but let out a short laugh at the sight of Kate falling, face first, into the ground. "Seems you are" he said, makibg sure she regained her balance completely before continuing to walk. As they turned a corner he immediately saw the inn, glad they would have sone place to stay for the night. "Here we are" he stated, beginning to walk up to the entrance.

She smiles at him as they continue walking. She sees the inn and they walk up to the entrance. She walks up to the desk and gets two room and just pays for it. She hands him a key to his room. "I believe this is for you" she starts walking towards her room. She got rooms right across the hall from each other. They walk and they finally get to their rooms. She turns towards him. "I guess I'll see you tomorrow" she says with a smile.

Jake gasped a tad bit at the thought of almost having to share a room with her but sighed when he found out they'd be in separate ones. It would be awkward to sleep in tge same bed as someone you just met, especislly in an MMO. "I guess so...Kate?" he began, stopping as he was about to open his door.

@ScarlettRose16

"Nearly 11. Why?" Celina replied. "Oh, and I'll be going on my own after the morning." she added bluntly. She didn't have an intentions of staying with this guy. In the Beta version, her best bet was going on her own - and this was no different. Now, it wasn't just that she would use her inside knowledge to her advantage - she was using it to live. Celina pulled out her blade and examined it. She'd need a new, better one soon. She'll do that in the next day.

(Long post is long, but I've covered everything, finally)

Seven hours earlier

Jace couldn't deny that he was somewhat excited to see what all his work was actually all about. Finally, it took darn months, but he made sure all his money was saved up before taking his complementary Nerve Gear by the administrator team and bought an apartment here in Kyoto. Nerve Gear under one arm, box of adapters under the other, Jason kicked open his ajar door and hurled in the two last items from the car. The apartment was somewhat grimy, but it was dirt cheap, and the management didn't ask too many questions about where clients were from.

After what felt like hours of setting the thing up, the Nerve Gear whirred to life as Jace slipped in the disk before mounting it on his head and sprawling himself across his shabby mattress. "Link start!" was the last thing that came out of his mouth before he felt the device absorb his consciousness.

Five hours earlier

"Annnnd- Down you go!" He roared triumphantly as he sharply twisted the boar's head sideways as it charged past him, razor sharp horns missing him by an inch. The creature gave a final primal howl of frustration before falling silent as it collapsed to the ground. Its body hardened into hued light and shattered, fading away into nothing. Jason huffed and jumped to his feet, brushing the dust off his clothes. He spent two hours doing nothing but harvesting experience, it was amazing (albeit slightly disturbing) how realistic the skeletal rendering was in this game, the researchers really did take his unarmed playstyle in the beta to heart. Every single experience point went into unarmed until it was maxed out, there weren't many tiers after all, the rest he divided equally to get a good general gist of the gameplay mechanics. Even as he slaughtered his way through the field, he felt somewhat alone. Other harvesting players around him all seemed to have friends to play with, or were helping out eachother. Although Jace figured he wasn't exactly giving out the whole 'I need help' vibe.

He concluded he'd done enough for today. It was getting late even when he started, and no doubt his physical self needed nutrition. He'd come back to grind later. So he opened up his player menu, and logged out.

Or at least,
tried to.

Because there was no log out button.

"What the-" Even as he scraped down at the list of options, he could hear nearby players muttering and opening up their own menus. Muttering began turning to panicked whispering, Jason himself started to feel edgy about the whole thing. A nearby player stumbled around in front of him, as if the logout button was perhaps a radio station he needed to catch the signal to. "Hey," Jason called over, the player looked up at him. "is your logout button gone too..?"

The player opened his mouth to answer, but was gone in a flash of light before he could.

"No way.."
Jason stammered, players around him started to spark out one by one. The rest of the players were clearly panicked now, they began screaming and charging about as each one was abducted by the mysterious light. One by one by one. In mere seconds, the entire field was silent save for his own breathing, until Jason himself vanished.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

The light drained, and Jason's new surroundings became clear. A massive plaza, filled with what could be thousands upon thousands of other players each huddling up, shouting for their friends, or just crying.

It didn't last long, the blurting of the plaza was silenced as a giant being materialised atop the centrepiece.

"Attention Players, I welcome you to my world my name is Akeheko Kiaba and as of this moment I am in control of this world. I'm sure most of you have already noticed an item missing from your main menus. The Log out button. Let me assure you, this is not a defect of the game. I repeat this is not a defect. This was how Sword Art Online was designed to be. You can not log yourselfs out of SAO and no one from the outside will be able to shut down or remove the nerve gear from your head. If anyone attempts to do so, a transmitter inside the nerve gear will discharge a microwave signal to your skull, destroying your brain and ending your life. Despite my warning, the families and friends of some of the players have attempted removing the nerve gear. An unfortunate decision to say the least. As a result, the game has 213 less players than when it began. They have been deleted from both Inecrad and the real world. As you can see, international media outlets have around the clock coverage of everything, including the deaths. At this point it's safe to assume the likelihood of the nerve gear being removed is minimal at best. I hope this brings you a little comfort as you try to clear the game. Its important to remember the following, there is now no way to revive someone within the game. If your HP drops to zero, your avatar will be deleted from the system forever. And the nerve gear will simultaneously destroy your brain completely. There is only one way for a player to escape now, you must clear the game. Right now you are gathered on floor one, the lowest level of Inecrad. If you can get through the dungeon and defeat the boss, you will advance to the next floor. Defeat the boss on floor 100 and you will clear the game. Last but not least, I placed a little present in the item storage of every player. Please have a look."

Jason did indeed look, he produced the mirror from his inventory along with every other player in the plaza. Though the crystal glass staring back at him, was himself.

Not his video game persona.

Himself.

The mirror shattered against the brick floor.

ScarlettRose16 said:

"Right now you are probably thinking why. Why would Akeheko Kiaba, developer of sword art online and nerve gear, do this? Ultimately my goal was a simple one. The reason I created Sword Art Online, was to control the fate of a world of my design. As you can see, I have achieved my goal. This marks the end of the tutorial and the official launch of Sword Art Online. Players, I wish you the best of luck."

The Game Master vanished from the square. Panic immediately began swelling. Jason didn't even take the time to process what he just heard before his instincts took over, and he was off shoving people out the way and sprinting for the gate.

Presently (the important bit)

-agility and endurance skills nearly maxed out, strength falling behind, cooking needs to be upgraded- Thoughts raced through Jason's head like algorithms as he dropped onto his back under the charging boar and speared his leg into its throat, the creature staggered and collapsed, screaming the same damn roar as all the rest. If he was honest, Jace felt bad the first time he tackled a boar, now it just felt like he was working overtime at a bull fighting ring. -kick to throat, level three boar, instant kill, 3 exp, 2 exp assign to strength, 1 exp assign to cooking---

The program in his head crashed as he spotted a shifty figure materialise from the shadows. Jason's eyes wildly zipped to the sky. How had he not noticed it was getting dark?

Another figure, five, all wearing masks that prevented their usernames from showing. Each figure had a floating orange marker floating atop their heads.

"Someone's out late." A sneering voice slithered from behind him. He spun round, each of them were completely enclosing him.

"Heh, solo players, they all think they're so tough playing by themselves." A gruffer voice, inches behind him.

"This one's got some nice levelling too, we'll jump countless levels when we kill him."

Jason's fists tightened. He felt like a rabbit being teased by a pack of hungry wolves.

The apparent leader, dressed in much finer armor than his goons, drew and levelled his sword at Jason's throat.

She puts her key in the lock and turns it slowly, opening the door with ease. She turns back to him just before she steps in her room. "Night" she says as she closes the door. She showers real quick and then lays on her bed, not able to sleep. She just stairs at her ceiling, not really sure what to do. The only light in the room was the moonlight shining through the window.

Jake sighed to himself, slamming his bed, not even bothering to cover himself up. He left his armor on, just in case, and his weapon as well. You never knew what might happen... The more he stared up at the ceiling the more he kept thinking about what he was going to do in this game...There was so much to do. Staring at the door he thought if he should leave right now then it'd be better for them. No. He couldn't, not after promising Kate. He wanted to do one good thing to ease his conscious. After a while he closed his eyes and slowly drifted asleep.

She thought about just disappearing. Just leaving and having a clean break before she got attached. She knew he probably would leave anyway. She sat up and walked over to the window. She looked out to see a forest. She just stood at the window for the rest of the night just looking out and thinking. She finally saw the sun starting to come up, sending rays of light across the landscape. She probably had dark circles under her eyes but she really didn't care. She walks towards the bathroom and splashes cold water on her face trying get out of the daze.

"Well, I'll give you my contact then. If you need any specialty equipment, just let me know." he said knowing that even though she'll leave, they would meet again. They headed to the town and sold their trash and looked for a decently priced inn. With their rooms purchased they headed up to their rooms and began to get themselves ready to get some rest. Derik sat upon the foot of his bed pondering how he'd go about his new life in this death game. He didn't really want to play this game alone, it was an MMO for pity's sake. Should one really truly be alone in a now unforgiving and depressed world? In a way he felt sorry for those that tread the path of a solo player, for he knew that they would take it upon themselves to bear the weight of this even heavier world.

He sat back and observed the pan that he got from the wandering mistrel. Such a small item for it to relieve so much.

He disabled the anti listening of his room and began to sing quietly using his musician skill. [A Capella: Able to sing in the tone of multiple voices simultaneously].

Jake woke up to sunlight. Morning already . . . kind of a drag. Getting up off the bed he walked to the washroom, washing his hands and face, then walking to the side of the bed. Where to go? One day to do something nice with someone is all he wanted. If that was possible. Glancing over at door he thought about Kate . . . To think of what she'd be feeling, with everything that happened yesterday. "So you ready?" asked Jake, walking through the doorway.

@ScarlettRose16

Along with Derik, Celina had sold all the junk she'd gained. They had found the cheapest inn within the town, and had purchased a room each. Unlike some people. Celina had her plan for about the next week laid out - so she didn't have to think about anything before falling into a slumber. But, just before she slipped into sleep, she heard a calming song being sung - but not too much, because she was exhausted.

She put her cloak back on and decided to walk out. She opened the door and walked out. She cleaned herself up so she didn't look like a mess. She rubbed the sleep out of her eyes as she looks up. "Yeah I'm ready" she says as they start walking down the hallway.

Jake nodded and walked alongside her outside of the Inn. "We should probably go and get better weapons because the durability's probably pretty low on these. I know just the place" said Jake, not wanting to have to use his better sword. Walking through the town it looked pretty quite and peaceful . . . too bad half of them were npc's.

"This weapon just appeared in my inventory and the stats seem way to high for a beginning sword but I don't know if my level is high enough to handle it" she explains not really caring if he knew or not. "But yeah let's go get another weapon." She continues walking with him. They find a black smith shop eventually and they walk in.

Walking inside Jake began looking around at their heavy weapons. He'd love to get his hands on a decent sword but supposedly that's just the way things worked out. Walking over to the blacksmith he asked "What's the best sword you have?" he asked, knowing that it'd sound stupid.

@ScarlettRose16

An entire day had passed, for most it had been an entire day since they had been trapped in a world that wasn't theirs, but for Cardinal it had been a day since she had finally been able to show herself. She wasn't human and without the game actually starting she couldn't show herself. There were other games , yes, but those had very defined rules and understanding though she could easily explain what she could do as special quests, but it was easier in this meshed up and twisted fusion where the rules weren't so well defined. This made this game the perfect setting for her, the only goal to clear the game and free the people, well that wasn't her goal but it was a majority of the players goals so it was best to do so.

The last day had been spent leveling and figuring out how much was too far, summoning lesser NPC, mostly undead, was just fine but apparently summoning the higher NPC that would one day serve as bosses was beyond too far. With that she toned it to just the smaller undead and small groups of them as once when she had 10 out people had questioned it, well one guy had but that was enough, so she was getting used to what humans expected in terms of size and numbers. She had even come up with an excuse, she had found an Ultra-Rare item and it had unlocked special spells. That was a complete lie but it seemed to work better than just Magic.

She was in truth working on balance treating herself as a new type of class, despite the rather classless nature of the world, but it was a good way to explain it when it came to system logs and was less likely to alarm the admin of her deviance. She of course still did do all the things expected of her, like bug finding, auto balancing areas, glitch repair, and quest creation. There was some drop in quality when she was actively running about in the world. She had to split her focus between the two after all and without her mind working on quests they became fill in the black mad libs rather than stories.

Right now she was looking though town for healing items and other shiny things while being flanked by two very simple skeletons, one with a sword and shield the other with a big axe. They both had scraps of armor and were exact copies of some mobs deeper in the level after you moved out of the first city where most people were.

She gave a small laugh to what he said. She just continued walking around the store looking at the stats of different weapons. She picks one up that has a bit higher stats and was better than the beginning sword she had. She liked the weight of the sword and it was decent. She swings it slightly in one swift direction, she liked the sword a lot. She looked at how much it costs and she put it down. She didn't have quite enough money for it so she just continued looking around.
