Fantasy Cursed Island

"Luck can kiss my parchment-yellow ass!", Sinach barked from Emilia's shoulders.

Jalin and Turac groaned in unision at that, "Lines like that are how you invite the fates to bite, not kiss."

“That psychic did predict we’d find danger in Woodvale. I don’t know how reliable that is, but if there’s any truth to it, we’d best be careful.”

"That psychic," Jalin would be rolling his eyes if he had them, "Has a vested interest in predicting common occurences to keep business."

"But a reward and a friend are less common. I suppose we'll see what happens."

Emilia tilted her head. "I wonder if she meant a new friend or an old friend. Everyone we know is here with us or across the sea."

Jalin shook his head, but didn't press the argument. He'd had similar discussions with lady Niudisa. When you believed something was going to happen, you unconsciously took action to make it happen.

"Probably a new friend," Siege shrugged, "Unless someone's mom is about to jump through those mirrors!" Gods she hoped Jerry and Asta stayed on their side of the mirror.

Roy paused. "Ah, we forgot to update mom on the 'heist.' We should probably let her know we haven't been executed."

Siege and Turac both snapped their heads in Roy's directions, simultaneous perfect expressions of "Oh, SHIT!", on their faces as Siege jumped up to find a mirror and Turac hid in his shell, as though that would offer any sanctuary agains their mother's wrath.

Roy groaned as he rested his head in his hands. "I hope there's nothing in these woods, because she's going to wake them up." Nidia, always eager to help, offered her mirror for them to use.

Almost on cue, the second Nidia handed over the mirror, it lit up, with Jerry on the other side looking through with a grave expression on her face. She looked almost on the verge of tears until she saw Roy's face, then her face contorted in a familiar expression of "You are so grounded!", if they'd still lived in their parents' home.

He was glad she was giving him that chance before the scolding, at least. "So, before we could get close to the prince, a thief stole the stone in the night. We offered to help the royals find it, tracked down the thief and found his corpse, with the stone. So we had a forgery made and the royals couldn't tell the difference, so they set us up with a wagon and we've been busy almost non-stop with all of that and getting our supplies ready."

"It was Roy's idea!", Siege called from across the campsite.

"Siege, shut up, you're next!", Jerry barked, focusing on Roy, "And at no point during any of that did you think you should tell your mother you weren't executed?" they had said they'd be executed if they failed. Jerry had paced gouges in all the carpets and rugs in the house trying to convince herself that her kids weren't dead.

"Sorry? SORRY?" Sorry didn't put back the years that had taken off of Jerry's life! "You made your mother think you were dead, and all you've got is 'Sorry'?"

Roy cringed again. "Well, what do you want me to say? I forgot to call you sooner and no excuse can really make up for that."

"No, it can't!"

"If you would like to come through and slap some sense into him," Jalin offered, "I can cast that spell!"

"Shut up, blood boy!"

Nidia spoke up. "And also any one of the rest of us could have reminded him, but we forgot, too. So it's not entirely on him."

"Any one of the rest of you should have called yourselves!", Jerry shouted, "Where's Turac? I sent him to be responsible!"

"He's... uh," Jalin nodded in the diretion of the turtle the size of a small house, "Hiding."

"TURAC!", Jerry barked at her oldest. That dragon turtle proved that a turtle in his shell was not immobile, he nearly cleared the tents and shook the ground when he landed.

"Turac explain to me-" Jerry ripped into the dragon turtle, all the others could do was wait until she had to stop and catch her breath. Siege waved for Roy to cut off the call.
