Irene's gaze dropped back down to her fingers, which were drumming away at the desk. The change of tone in Adrian's voice was apparent, but Irene was pretending not to notice, instead simply examining her carved nails and the silver ring on her left hand. Had she struck a nerve? It was normal for people to tense up and glare whenever she opened her mouth, but Irene had never seen Adrian look downhearted before.

"All right, who stuck a twig up your arse? Jeez..." The girl tutted and rolled back her eyes. It was a habit of hers that she failed to shake, even when there was a twisting confusion brewing in her stomach. What's up with this dude?

"Look, kid, I don't like it either. But you're going to have to suck it up and detach yourself from the guy eventually. Getting to know the new squad is our job - would you trust some dick you've never met with your life? ...Whatever. What I'm trying to say is that I haven't got much time, but I think we should start getting used to each other. Like, in a group chat. You've got Matthew's online name, right? He's the only other Quinx on my list."

Dead Enmity

Could they just not talk about it? Adrian didn't want to discuss his past with anyone, maybe he could just sit and be quiet for a bit whilst Irene talked about whatever she needed to talk about... He didn't really want to listen anymore, but he guessed he had to...he was about to be part of a different squad... Even if he didn't want to...and he didn't want to split from Jackson...

"Mmn...I don't know... Maybe?" Adrian raised a hand to look through his skype contacts, he wasn't really trying to do much though... What if the people were all awful? What if he didn't like anyone? Well, he doubted that would happen, it wasn't like he hated Irene...and Teddy was cool...so there was two people already... Honestly, he was probably overthinking it... it's what he did when he was in such a mood... He was starting to perk up slightly again though, after all, it was just one comment, he needed to get over it quickly so that they could get on, right?

"Do we need to add him?" He asked, turning his head to the side, still scrolling through contacts... He didn't really know this Matthew well...

"Nah, I'm on it now . Oh, and I found another Quinx in my contacts. That Ryan guy. I'll add him in too, if you don't mind..." Without even waiting for Adrian's yes-or-no response, Irene already had her hand on the mouse and her eyes were focused on the screen, not the camera.

Two blank boxes appeared beside Irene's image where Matthew and Ryan's faces were supposed to be positioned. Matthew's box was the first to light up, revealing a ghostly pale face swaddled in a cocoon of flaming red hair. Matthew was sat in a dark room, wearing a dark shirt and a dark facial expression.

"What do you want now?" the man groaned,, staring blankly down at the screen below his webcam. "It's Saturday, before noon. Why the hell'd you call me?"

"Why the hell'd you pick up if you're so pissed about it?"
Irene retorted, whipping her eyes away from Matthew's image.

"Look, I've read the email, I know all about it. So do me a favour and fuck off while I'm trying to have a peaceful morning."

"Mhm." Seeing more people being added to the call, Adrian decided it was probably best he started to push back the thoughts and feelings about his family... It wasn't important right now anyway. There were people to talk to and get to know before they all became a team... They would have to work together, so Irene was right, they should get to know one another.

It was just as he smiled that he heard someone else join the call the man really didn't seem happy about being in the call and it made Adrian turn his head to the side and furrow his eyebrows, why was he so grumpy? Had he just woken up.

"But we're...gonna be a team right?" He started, "So...Irene said we...have to talk to each other." The boy's voice sounded confused and innocent, like he really didn't understand why this new guy would be so angry when he voluntarily joined a skype call.

Then another box popped up and a fourth person joined the call. A male with blond hair and violet eyes came into view, an eyebrow raised.

"So, what's this? Some social gathering?" His voice was monotone, but he didn't seem nearly as angry as the man who had joined before, "What did you want?"

Matthew hefted an elbow onto his own desk and began to loudly crack and pop his knuckles when the fourth member of the call picked up. His orange-brown eyes thinned to slits when he saw Ryan on his screen, leering at the younger male with the same disdain he expressed towards most other humans.

"Ask this shithead and her skinny little crony, this wasn't my idea," the bulky investigator spat, jabbing a finger at the place on his screen where Ryan's picture was located as he addressed his co-worker.

"Matt!" Irene hissed, her eyes widening at Matthew's harsh words. She repeatedly swiped one flattened hand to the side in a subtle gesture to quiet down.

"And don't act like you're being invited to some shitty party," he carried on loudly. "These fuckers' mums never taught them no manners, thinking they can go around talking to people this time on a Saturday."

Irene's shoulders tensed as she listened to Matthew's sharpened complaints, but when she spoke, it wasn't to him. Instead she ignored Matthew and cleared her throat to speak to Ryan.
"Sorry, Ryan. Ignore this dick - Adrian and I thought it would be a good idea for everyone to get to know each other before the new squad forms. It could give us a head start."

Dead Enmity

Adrian had started chewing on the inside of his cheek as he watch Matthew, why was he so angry? The boy didn't understand... The other man seemed to be calmer though, he didn't seem friendly, but he seemed calmer, which was good.

"Calm down Matthew." Ryan sighed, rolling his eyes at the man, "Sometimes I question your mental age. Did you never grow up?" He didn't seem bothered by the man at all, instead he kept his monotone voice and continued to take slight jabs at Matthew's angry behaviour.

"It's not a problem Irene." He waved his hand, "Having everyone briefed on their position within this team would probably be a good idea at some point, but we'll wait for everyone to be around for that." He stayed silent for a second before speaking again, "I have heard that-"

"Why're you so angry all the time?" Adrian cut Ryan off, his hand was balled into a fist again, but you could see that on the camera. It was obvious who he was addressing, he'd been brought down again by someone trying to insult his family. "You don't know anything about anyone's else's parents so just shut up." He was snapping again...why did people have to keep bringing up family?

Irene crossed her arms together and puffed out her cheeks. Clearly she wasn't going to make much progress where she was, at least not when Adrian was cutting other people off and Matthew was running his foul mouth. She simply sat back in her office chair and threw up her arms in despair.

"Hah?" Matthew raised his eyebrows and jutted out his chin towards the camera. "You're telling me to shut up? You've got some fucking nerve."

"Drop it, Matt," Irene tried, leaning back in her seat and rubbing her forehead with a set of long, thin fingers. Her voice was distant and she looked somewhat unengaged, not even watching the screen.

Whether it was because he didn't hear her or whether it was because he just didn't care, Matthew ignored Irene and carried on with his verbal assault on Adrian.
"Oh, get you! Big kid standing up for your mama and papa like your scrawny behind actually matters to them. If you're so close to your fam, where are they now, huh?"

"Oh great. Here we go." Ryan sighed, in fact it looked like he tabbed out since the clicking of a mouse and typing of a keyboard could be heard in the background. Obviously he wanted nothing to do with what was about to go down, he wasn't interested in petty drama between children.

Adrian gritted his teeth, his was sitting straight now, scowling at the screen. He didn't know anything! He didn't know what they were like, he couldn't say anything about his parents... It wasn't often Adrian got mad, but the alternitive was to get upset...and he really didn't want to do that...

"I do matter to them!" He yelled back, obviously pissed off that Matthew would even suggest that he didn't...but...those words were more said for him than the other, to convince himself that his parents did want him...and that they cared about him. "If they didn't care then I wouldn't be here!"

He didn't want to answer the next question, he wasn't just going to blurt out that his parents were in jail...he wouldn't... That wasn't going to help him in any way.
"It's none of your business where my family are...it has nothing to do with you. Just fuck off asshole!"

Matthew was sneering now, his lips parted in a cruel smile.

"Oh, 'asshole', huh? That's a big word. Who taught you that, some shithead big brother? Or was it that pretentious crip who follows you everywhere you go?"

Irene opened her mouth as if to say something, but seemed to forget her voice as she just stared slack-jawed at Matthew with her hands joined across her lips. Matthew briefly ran the back of his fingers over his glabella before carrying on,
"Know what? The way you're getting so defensive makes me think it was the former of the two. Oh, wait, let me guess: you've got stick-in-the-arse syndrome because you aren't your parents' favourite. They picked the other sibling over you and you got thrown out and into the CCG like a bag of dog shit."

Though it took her a few seconds, Irene finally seemed to regain her composition and sat forwards again to argue back against Matthew's spewed insults.
"Matt, that is enough! What is wrong with you?"

"Nuh-uh, this is what you get for calling me at seven in the morning to moan about your shitty upbringing."

"Matt-"

"Irene! This ain't your problem, so keep some distance, got it?"

Dead Enmity

Adrian wanted to break his neck, he wanted to snap it in half... How dare he talk about Leo like that...and then Jackson... How dare he talk about either of them in such a way, Adrian would guy him for it... He swore.

"You don't know what Leo's like." He growled, "HE'S A GREAT BROTHER, AND IF YOU FUCKING INSULT HIM AGAIN I'LL KILL YOU!" His hand slammed down on the desk making a loud thud that rattled the computer and other objects around. "And don't you fucking dare talk about Jackson like that, you don't know the shit he's had to deal with! Do you think he wanted that? Do you think anyone would?! You insensitive prick!"

So maybe Adrian was getting upset, he didn't like it when people talked about Leo, it just reminded him that his brother wasn't actually around anymore...and...Jackson was the only thing he had, he wasn't about to let someone go around calling him things. His eyes were starting to well up, but it wasn't obvious on camera, luckily... That was only made worse by what Matthew said next.

"You're fucking wrong..." Did he really think that was it? Did he really think that all problems were as simple as favourite. "I joined the CCG because they wanted me to, and I wanted to...not...not because my parents threw me ou-" He had to cut himself off and put a hand over his mouth to stop him crying... Fuck... Come on... Why did this hurt so much? He needed to say something...he couldn't stand here like this...if he cried he was giving this guy the edge.

"Sorry if not all issues are to do with teenage angst. But you wouldn't have joined the CCG at my age, you were probably still trying to be 'edgy'. How's that working out for you? Got outta that 'phase' yet?" Adrian practically spat the words, glaring at his computer screen... Even when others were cruel to him, he hardly ever spat back like this, but Matthew had seen what upset him, and he was capitalising on it... And Adrian only learned via example.

"That's it, I'm ending this!" Irene called out. Matthew moved to say something else, but his words never reached the other three investigators for his image had been cut from the screen and his end of the line muted.

With a shaky sigh, Irene mopped her brow with the back of her hand and stared back up at her screen, the sudden sharpness of silence sending an uncomfortable buzz through her head.
"And that," she began, shaking her head from side to side, "Is why you don't Skype Matthew Morello first thing on a Saturday morning."

Irene spent several seconds staring blankly at some far-away image before her gaze was once again caught by the look on Adrian's face.
"What the - dude, are you okay!?" The upset in Adrian's eyes were apparent, even if he did try to hide it with a hand. Surely Matthew hadn't upset him that much... After all, his insults had been directed not at Adrian but his friends and family instead. So what's up with him? "Shit - man - I'm sure Matt didn't mean what he was saying... He's a complete dickbag sometimes, but I doubt he meant to get you, well, like this. C'mon, it's true... Right, Ryan?" She called for help on the other member, Ryan, who she had almost forgotten about in the commotion. There had to be a way to right this situation before she left. There had to, or else her plan would fall to pieces...

Dead Enmity

When Matthew was kicked Adrian couldn't help but feel slightly relieved, he didn't want to continue with that argument...it was horrible...but...the damage had been done... It was too late to reverse it now. Why did he have to bring any of that up?

The boy stood there, hands on his desk, looking down. Everything just came rushing back to him, it felt like a punch to the gut...everything he didn't want to remember, he remembered... It hurt... It hurt a lot... But he swallowed it down in an attempt to stop himself crying. He was shaking slightly, and trying to breathe properly...but all his breaths came out short and shaky... Dammit... Irene's words were almost ignored by him, he could hardly focus... It wasn't easy?

"Huh?" Ryan suddenly looked up, stopping whatever he'd been doing, "Matthew is an asshole, I agree, but you can never tell whether he means what he says... Though, I suppose it doesn't matter." The man looked at Adrian's camera, "He's already hurt you." Only the truth, that's all he could say. "I don't know how you didn't work out he'd be aggravated at being called at this time in the morning. Though it was his fault for joining, if he didn't want to be here he would have left." He sighed, "His opinion should mean nothing to you, Adrian, was it? His general intellect is less than favourable."

Adrian nodded his response, he needed to pull himself together... Maybe...maybe he should just leave the call for a little bit.

"U-Um..." The boy looked up, "If it's okay...I'm gonna go." He mumbled, managing to smile brightly for a moment, "It was nice meeting you, Ryan! This is gonna be fun! " After that he waved and simply ended the call, his smile dropping instantly... It wasn't anyone else's fault...but...he'd been afraid of just that...that...the people in Quinx would be like that... Well, at least most of them weren't... Right? It was just one...he didn't even have to go near him, it'd be fine, everything would be fine... Come on... Adrian let out a stifled sob, his eyes welling up with tears... Why did he have to be so cruel? Why did he...why did he bring up Leo like that... Oh fuck... Being reminded hurt, especially when Adrian hadn't dealt with anything that had happened yet, he just pushed it away, forgot about it... It was too painful to deal with.

There was something of a static presence in the room after the call ended - a lingering sense of words that hung in the air, yet remained unspoken. Ryan was gone, and now so was Irene. The girl had probably left for her fiancé's coffee shop by now.

Suddenly, through the thick silence, cut a soft and muffled voice.
"Adrian!" Jackson, his back against the cold white tiles of the floor, was calling out to Adrian from across the apartment. There was a teal-blue towel bunched up in his arms, but most of his body was still drenched - thankfully, this time with clean water rather than mud. His hair was dark and heavy with water, too, and curled inwards to stick to the sides of his face.

"Ah, shit," he whispered to himself, pawing at the edge of the wall with an outstretched arm. There had been voices coming from the other room - after turning off the water, he had heard Adrian speaking as well as the quieter tones of several other people, though the exact words that had been exchanged were unclear. If there are visitors in here... The mere thought of being found in his current position was already making him shudder. Let's just hope it's a voice chat and not a physical presence. Either way, he couldn't be too careful and decided not to call for Adrian more than once this time.

Dead Enmity

It had been impossible for Adrian to hold back his tears, he didn't know how to cope with this sort of thing... Shortly after the call had left the boy had fallen back into his chair and burst out crying, wrapping his arms over the front of his face and keeping his eyes squeezed tight shut. He hated this, he hadn't feeling like this... All he wanted was Leo back, he just wanted his parents and Leo, was that too much to ask? It wasn't fair...what did he do to deserve this? Why did they leave him on his own? Why didn't they love him enough to stay?!

"I'm s-sorry...I-I'm so s-sorry..." He whimpered, keeping his head down near the desk, he was trying to stop himself crying...he really was, he didn't want to be this upset over some guy who thought it was funny to yell at him and insult his family and friends... Adrian didn't like when people shouted at him in general, so that was starting to sink in now...but it was mainly the fact that he'd brought everything up from his past... Matthew had said that Adrian's parents didn't care about him, that he didn't matter to them...but...that wasn't true...right? They...they didn't really not care. The boy put a hand to his mouth again to try and make himself shut up, thinking about it just made it more painful...

If it wasn't for Jackson, he probably would have sat there all day...but he heard the other's call. Quickly he pulled himself off of the chair and attempted to compose himself, but it was impossible. Adrian walked back through to Jackson's room, and then the bathroom, still crying slightly. His eyes were red and puffy and he felt like shit, but despite all that he still attempted a smile when he found the other.
"Do...you...um...need help?" He rubbed his eyes in an attempt to stop them watering, but it really wasn't as easy as that...and seeing Jackson...well...it only made him think about how Matthew had insulted him too...and then he felt awful for the guy... What did he do to deserve being put in a position like this? Where he couldn't use half his body... It wasn't fair! And pricks like Matthew had to make fun of that.

Whatever Jackson had expected to see when Adrian walked into the room, it wasn't a boy who could barely choke back his own tears. Even without his glasses, the blur didn't take away the redness in Adrian's face, the sheen of the water on his cheeks or the splinter in his voice.

"Whoa, wh-what's wrong? Adrian!?" Jackson was completely taken aback by the sight of the person in the doorway; his eyes were wide, his mouth agape and one arm nervously reached up towards his friend.

Damn it, damn it! he furiously dug his elbows down into the tiles below him in an attempt to raise his back from the floor, but with no hand-holds within reach, with no way of getting on eye-level with Adrian... What do I do!?

He didn't know what had happened, what had gone wrong... The last time the two boys had seen each other, Adrian had seemed perfectly contented, if a little guilty. And now... Now, for some reason, he was in tears. Jackson winced as he felt a twinge of his own guilt for simply staring when Adrian was clearly in a state of sorrow. There was another twinge of anger at whatever - no,
whoever had made this happen, too. And then there was a pang of sadness, though in this case Jackson couldn't understand why. Maybe he was empathising, maybe he was instinctively mirroring... Screw this! What's the matter? What can I do!?

"W-wait, no, hold on. It's - it's fine, what happened to you? Something's happened, hasn't it? I, ah, I thought I heard voices, or maybe someone shouting, but..." Damn it... It must have been those other people. Whoever they are, whatever they said... I'll fucking kill them, I swear it.

"I-It's nothing... I'm just.." Adrian hiccuped, putting a hand over his mouth again as he held back another sob. He didn't want to upset Jackson, he didn't want to feel like he did...but...what did he do? He felt so awkward just standing there and crying, this wasn't fair on the people around him...he needed to get over it. "I'm just...being...stupid." For a moment he just stood there, before walking in front of Jackson, looking around. He should go get the other's clothes and such...shoulder he...

"I um...I got accepted for Quinx." He told him, smiling, "And then..um..Irene called." He was going to move, he wanted to move, but for something reason he stayed there... Why? "And um...we were talking, he added more people and...and..." Adrian broke into tears again, quickly attempting to wipe his eyes, he shouldn't do this to Jackson...he just shouldn't...but he felt so weak...

"I-I'm sorry. I'm really sorry. It's just..." The boy sniffed, still crying, "He started talking about Leo, and mom and dad, and you and...and it hurt... It's hurts so much Jackson..." Adrian couldn't wipe his eyes quicker than tears were falling from them, "H-He...He said...He said I didn't matter to them, th-that's not true right? That's not...-" He choked back sobs and turned his head away, rubbing his eyes desperately... Goddammit. He needed to shut up, he was just bothering Jackson with this, the other didn't need this right now...

Adrian didn't know how much Leo had told Jackson about their parents, but he himself hadn't said all that much...he'd never had much of a reason to bring them up... He never wanted to bring them up. Leo had been a lot more open that he had, the other wasn't bothered what people knew about him. Adrian missed that...he missed him... Why did he have to die? Why did he go?
"I-I don't...- I don't get it..." Sobbing, he swallowed and tried to continued, "I just...why did... Why did Leo leave me alone? I want him back, I-I want him to come back!"

Oh. Jackson turned his head away for a moment, putting his hands back on top of the bundled towel and hugging it up to his chest. Oh... What was there for him to say? There was so much going on in Jackson's mind, so many ideas and thoughts that he wanted Adrian to know at that moment, but the words were lost in his mouth. Should he congratulate him on being accepted for Quinx? Should he comfort him? Threaten his attackers?

He didn't know much about Irene, and he probably didn't have a connection to the other people involved, but in that moment it didn't matter. All that mattered was... Getting Adrian back to normal, for lack of a better word. This wasn't how he usually acted; even when people picked on him, this kind of reaction was almost unseen before.

What the fuck did they say to you to do this!? Jackson thought, imagined himself yelling, but he kept quiet. He was angry. He was more angry than he could ever remember being since he'd had the news about Leo. Whoever it was, I'll find them, I'll beat them up, tear them to pieces, rip out their guts... What, exactly, had Adrian ever done to deserve mockery like that? Speaking ill of his parents - well, up to a certain point, that was reasonable. He remembered Leo telling him the news one day about their murderous behaviour and admission to prison. But to speak of them so harshly as to put Adrian down like that, to say anything, anything at all against Leo's good name... That's unforgivable.

"Adrian," Jackson finally said in a tone much stiffer than what was intended. He had to make an effort not to spit and hiss like old habit told him to - he couldn't speak like that now. Not now, when Adrian was breaking down right in front of him. "Adrian, I... I'm sorry."

Shit... If there was ever something Jackson was a failure at, it was finding the right words to say to somebody in great pain. Was there any sentence that could ever bring comfort, any words that would help? Words can't bring Leo back. "That's horrible... I... I'm sorry. I d- I don't know what to say, but... I miss him too, but Leo..." And now what? He could go on to say, "Leo didn't leave you, he was taken." But shit all if that's not going to make things worse. Damn it! His hands curled into fists, nails digging into the soft skin of Jackson's palms. He had to keep talking, he had to say something, or do something... But what can I do that's going to mean anything? I can't even get up to give the guy a hug. Shit...

Dead Enmity

"I'm s-sorry Jackson... I'm sorry...I...I don't mean t-to do this... I don't..." Adrian wiped his eyes, "I just...I miss him so much..." He wrapped his arms around himself, eyes closed, and head down. "I d-don't get it... I don't get why everything was t-taken away!" He gritted his teeth, sobbing again and falling to his knees. It wasn't fair, it had never been fair... Why did no one stick around, why did everything always get taken away from him? He didn't want this...he didn't want it to hurt like this...

"I can't...I can't... I - I..." His breathing was slightly faster than normal, he didn't like being like this...he didn't want to think about it. "Leo can't be dead...he can't be...he...he...needs to come back... I-I really nee-..." He took in a deep breath and shut up, was he an idiot? Adrian couldn't accept it, but he knew Leo was dead, it just hurt to be reminded... Why couldn't he deal with it? Why couldn't he accept Leo's death and move on from it? Having to push someone down wasn't healthy, that much was obvious in this moment...but it was harder than it looked...

For a few minutes Adrian stayed completely silent, he just needed a moment he could deal with this. It wasn't like it happened yesterday, it had been years ago...he should have moved on... Slowly his crying started to lessen, but he wasn't okay quite yet, and he was still obviously a little upset, but every tear that tried to fall the boy wiped away.

"I'm sorry." He smiled slightly, but it was a sorrowful smile, his eyes showing how he really felt. It was an impossible task to force himself to be happy after something like that... Sure, it was trivial to some, but not to him... Not to him at all. "Um...you need clothes r-right? And...your wheelchair...I can-" He swallowed, "I can get them..." Maybe he just needed to be busy for a little bit... Yeah, yeah, it would...it would go away...right?

Jackson could do little but paint on a smile of his own and dip his chin in a shallow nod. There was nothing to say that he could put into words, no expression of sorrow, or grief, or comfort... The only words that he could think of right then were ones that would express his own fury. And somehow, that seemed inappropriate for that moment in time.

Maybe I'll have a clearer mind when the blood isn't all rushing to my head, he reasoned silently, touching his wrist onto his tepid forehead. Adrian doing all of his chores for him, getting his clothes ready and helping him into his chair... Even if it was humiliating, or made him feel guilty about doing nothing for himself, it had to be done. And when it was done, he would be able to do more to help. A run-down on the words spoken, a list of people involved, even something as simple as a hug... That could work. Jackson would know what to say, or do, or what place to go. I'd know whose throat to slit first.

Dead Enmity

"Alright." Adrian quickly got himself up and nodded, speed walking back into the other room to get everything ready for Jackson. At least it should keep his mind off of what just happened, he just...he needed a little time to compose himself was all. Getting things for Jackson might be enough time.

---

"Jackson!" The boy called from the door, smiling over at the other. It had been awhile since his breakdown in front of him, and it had been suggested that they get out for the day, which was definitely a good idea. Adrian needed something to keep his mind off of everything else. He was back to his average self, he'd had time to calm down and compose himself, even if there had been even more crying involved in that process. He just didn't want to do that again... So...he was going to be careful...

"We're going now, c'mon, c'mon." Adrian giggled and stood by the open door, keys in hand, he actually wanted to go out for a little bit for the day... It hadn't started off great...but they could make it better! They could make it a lot better. He had an idea of where they could go, and it was definitely better than sitting around in doors all day.

"Coming!" Jackson called back from his bedroom. If only it had been warmer, he might have chosen some more casual clothing to wear than the suits and ties he was used to keeping on at work, but the biting chill of late October forbade the wearing of short-sleeved logo tees and cropped jeans. This time he was in a thick red-and-white striped jumper, a heavy beige overcoat and matching trousers. Around his neck and tucked into the front of his coat was a large and thick scarf.

With one arm he reached out, grabbed his mobile phone from the foot of his bed and pocketed it before going back into the lounge to meet up with Adrian.

"Hey, where did you say we're going again?" Jackson chirped up at Adrian as he passed the younger boy on his way to the elevator. "Is the place within walking distance?"

Dead Enmity

"Mmn... I think so." Adrian followed the other out, locking the door behind himself and making his way to the elevator. He believed that the cafe was within walking distance... Yeah, it would probably only take around ten minutes to get there on foot... Under the bridge, down that road, a few corners.

He pressed the button to the elevator and waited for the doors to open, holding them open as Jackson got in. Then he pressed the button to go down and looked into the mirror, holding onto the railing with a childish smile on his face. He was a little happier now than he had been earlier.

"It's a cafe. I just thought you might enjoy sitting for a bit somewhere that isn't the house... Y'know." He span around, waiting as the elevator took them to the bottom floor. It would be fun to just get out and sit somewhere where they could watch London. Adrian enjoyed watching people, they were interesting, everything everyone did was different...and if you watch hard enough sometimes you could tell who was who without even seeing their faces.

The elevator made a ding noise as it reached the bottom floor, doors opening.
"Come on!" He scooted past Jackson and bounded out, going towards the main entrance.

Jackson pushed his glasses up his nose with a hand and then followed on after Adrian, keeping his eyes locked on the exit ahead of him.

"Café, huh? You know me too well," he commented as he caught up, a smile growing on his face as he regarded Adrian. The boy seemed to be feeling better than before. Way better, he completely lost it this morning... Jackson still didn't know whether the things he said had been enough. Could Adrian be faking his cheerfulness for the sake of appearance? He did seem a little bit too happy all of a sudden, but... No, quit being paranoid, idiot. It will be okay.

When the pair finally left the building behind them, passing through the main door and beginning down the path to the main road, the air around them cooled from a prickling warmth down to an icy chill. Whilst summer had barely dwindled down into the cascade of golden-brown leaves that was October, the temperatures had dropped rapidly to the point where Jackson could see his own breath in the air.
Good thing I brought this scarf. he thought as he pulled the red wool up over his chin.

"Well, Adrian, I have no idea which way we're going. So, uh, you lead the way. I'll be right behind you."

Dead Enmity

"Mhm!" Adrian held his hands in front of him, still smiling brightly. It was better to keep a smile on his face, it genuinely made him feel a little bit happier. They wouldn't be walking too long, and then they could get something to drink, and maybe something to eat, it would be great.

As soon as Jackson told him to lead the way Adrian was out of the door, he headed to the left and down that street, staying quite close to Jackson. Whilst Adrian didn't mind walking further forwards, as he did it often in the CCG building, he preferred to be as close to the other male as possible when they were walking somewhere in public... He didn't know why he was like that, but he was...and he really needed to stay quite close right now, he wasn't really up for running around like he usually did.

"I think you'll like it. it's small, and it has big windows, it's really nice." As they started to get closer to their destination, Adrian picked up speed a little bit, not too much as to leave Jackson behind, but his walking speed did pick up a tiny bit. Soon they were in a slightly busier part of the area, more people were walking around, and Adrian was sticking a little bit close to Jackson, keeping his hands behind his back as they walked.

Another five minutes went by and Adrian spotted the cafe up ahead.
"There!" He called, pointing towards it and looking to Jackson, "We're here!" His smile grew even more at the thought of food and drink, he hadn't really eaten much...or drank anything at all...so this would be good.

Jackson paused just behind Adrian and scanned up and down the café, nodding all the while. It certainly looked well-kept, with its clean, tall windows, and behind the reflections of the bustling outside world of London, there were waiters and waitresses buzzing from table to table.

"Wow... Hey, it looks good," Jackson lilted, eying the outside menu which had been balanced at the edge of the path. Carefully, avoiding the quick feet of men and women busier than him, Jackson moved closer to the board for a better look.

Cappuccino, latte, espresso... All of the regular drinks were listed, along with some more unusual combinations he would expect from a place like Starbucks. Lemon twist, triple-cocoa, ice cream soda. The thought of all of these various drinks had made Jackson realised how parched he was. Maybe a flavoursome caffiene-filled drink would give him wake him up properly.

"They have some cool things on the menu. Let's go in!" Jackson reversed and then swerved past the board outside and then over to the front door. "Th-thanks," he said as an older lady held open the door for him on her way out, allowing him to enter the café and then beckon Adrian to follow him in from behind the window.
