Fandom [CLOSED] Tokyo Ghoul: Dead Enmity

Dead Enmity

"That's cool..." The idea of coding creating a simulation people were in was super cool to Adrian, that would be fun...but what happened when you died? He guessed if he watched he'd find out... After all, it seemed that Jackson had eventually ran out of things to say... So they should probably just be quiet and watch the movie already, he'd learn more from actually watching it, he couldn't let Jackson spoil it all!

As the movie was unpaused, Adrian placed the empty grape box on the ground and curled up into the corner of the couch, making himself as small as possible. His head laid on the arm rest and he stared at the television, now engrossed in the movie.

If it wasn't getting late and the boy wasn't tired then he probably would have been able to get through it all...but he really was tired, and his eyes kept closing... He knew that Jackson had said he could go to sleep but not on the couch earlier that day...but he was really finding it hard to stay away, and he didn't want to leave either...

Wuss, Jackson thought to himself, half a smirk spreading over his face. You said you wouldn't sleep on the couch tonight. His thoughts were kept inside his own head, silent and not to be heard by the nodding Adrian sprawled across the item of furniture to his right.

The film was still going, but it was on its last legs, powering towards an ending Jackson had seen and seen again ten times over. Its familiarity was reassuring, even relaxing to him, and he felt himself slowly, gradually losing his grip on the world of awake...

"Adrian?" Jackson whispered. Was Adrian even awake anymore? Jackson couldn't really tell from his angle, and nor did he have the energy to turn around and check. Oh well... If Adrian wasn't going to bed, then it looked like Jackson would be sleeping in his chair too. It wasn't ideal, but he actually didn't mind. Adrian had been through a lot that day, and to wake him now would be an act of cruelty. It's better to leave him be. He looks so comfortable, too...

"Goodnight, Adrian," Jackson whispered again, flicking the remote to put the television on standby for the night. The film was over, and, nestled in his chair and the warmth of the apartment, he slept.

Adrian woke up rather early in the morning, as always, his sleeping pattern was a little weird, but it worked. He stretched out his arms and legs as if he were on a bed, only to find that they bumped into various things, or he almost fell of the place he was sleep. Realising he wasn't in his bed at that moment, his eyes shot open.

Looking around, the boy saw that he'd fallen asleep on the couch...again... He was still waking up and so it took him a second to remember what Jackson had said the night before. Oh no, oh no, oh no! Did he fall asleep?! He didn't mean to fall asleep! Where was Jackson?!

His eyes landed on the other sleeping in his chair not too far away and Adrian felt a little bit of guilt about the situation... Why did he fall asleep? He'd needed to help Jackson...he wasn't meant to go to sleep on the couch...and now he'd make the other sleep in wet clothes in his chair! That was fair...

Adrian sat up, swinging his legs over the side of the couch and looking down, now he just felt guilty... It wouldn't have taken that much effort to move and help him...but he'd just been so tired...and he didn't even know why... Not that that was any excuse, he was supposed to help Jackson out, that's what he did... Well, he'd just have to move him now.

The boy stood up, walking over in front of his friend. He thought about waking him, but at the same time he felt like he'd feel guilty about that too... Should he really do it? Maybe...if he whispered it?

"Jackson...?"

"Mmph..." His eyes closed, head dipped forwards and arms folded over each other on his lap, Jackson rolled his shoulders backwards and grunted. What? Oh... It took him a while to remember where he was, what he had been doing the night before. That's right... We watched a film together and crashed on the spot.

Slowly, sleepily, the man raised his hands to his face and rubbed his eyes open. The light pooling in from the tall windows in front was blindingly bright, but even squinting Jackson could pick out Adrian's slim and dark shape stood over him.

"Morning," Jackson mumbled back up without moving his lips. It was slow, but he was beginning to recall memories of the previous night; the crashes, the encounter with Jester. He thought about the way Adrian and Lea had fought, and then about how they all parted ways and the two men had come home together. I remember...

Stiffly moving, he angled his neck downwards to look at the clothing he was wearing. Though it was dirty, the fabric was no longer sodden - in fact, at the most it was slightly damp to the touch and in most places completely dry.

That's okay. It made him uncomfortable, he probably still looked a mess with his curled and dirtied hair, too, and he could feel the thickness of the stubble on his face. Perhaps a shave was in order. But that can wait. For now, Jackson was more concerned with the aftermath of the previous night's drama. Adrian had been on the receiving end of Jester's attacks and had likely exerted himself when he had simply been expecting to relax.

There was another twinge of that phantom grief in Jackson's chest again. Adrian got hurt because of a ghoul, he had been pinned against the wall and nearly strangled...
He must have been so scared. Maybe Adrian was still scared, or still hurting. He's definitely still hurting. Those injuries don't just disappear because you fall asleep. It must have been horrible to be thrown about like that with no provocation. And it was all down to ghouls... Fucking animals. I'll kill them.

It was something of an odd thing to say after immediately waking up, but Jackson felt like he had to check, he had to make sure that Adrian hadn't been seriously injured.
"Adrian... How's your neck?" he asked, brushing a clump of matted hair out of his face.

Dead Enmity

Adrian was surprised by the rather quick reply, so...Jackson was awake? Or...did he just wake him up? He probably just woke him up. The boy looked down, waiting for the other to fully wake up before he even thought about speaking, he didn't exactly want to overwhelm Jackson early in the morning, he'd woken him up, wasn't that enough?

Until he was addressed, Adrian simply stood there, rubbing his arms and kicking his foot back and forth slightly... He just couldn't stay still for a second, could he? Some part of him always had to be moving... He'd probably have to work on that at some point, but right now...right now it wasn't getting on anyone's nerves and it wasn't a massive problem, he didn't think at least... Well, he hoped it wasn't...

"Um, oh!" At the mention of his neck, a hand automatically went up to it. That reminded him of the previous night again, but...he wasn't shaken up by it as much as he was surprised with Jester's strength... They would have to fight again, Adrian doubted that would be the last they saw of the ghoul, he seemed pretty active, and very strong... Was he one of those ghouls who consumed human flesh at every given opportunity? Or did he only eat it when necessary? Only time would tell on that one...

"It's fine!" He wasn't going to complain about the pain, it only hurt slightly, but it was starting to bruise around the side, but that would clear itself up... "It'll clear up in the next few days I'm sure." He wouldn't worry Jackson with something like that, it wasn't a big deal... Though...thinking back to the situation... Adrian was still confused, he didn't understand why he wasn't afraid, it was normal to be afraid in those types of situations, right? Yet, he was staring into that ghoul's eyes and he wasn't even remotely afraid of what could have happened to him...he didn't know what he felt at the time, it happened to quickly...and now he couldn't recall much emotion...but it definitely wasn't fear.

"Anyway, um, what about you? Are you okay?" The boy looked over Jackson, there didn't seem to be any serious damage, but who knew if the other was in pain or not. "And you should stay in those clothes, they're dirty... I...I promised I wouldn't fall asleep out here and then I fell asleep and I'm really sorry, I really didn't mean to..." Adrian had started talking rather quickly, looking down at the floor whilst doing so, he felt genuinely guilty for letting Jackson stay in his dirty clothing because he had fallen asleep on the couch...

"I'm sorry if you're uncomfortable, I know it's probably not nice...and I really didn't mean to let you stay here... I'm sorry..." He just kept apologising, it must be awful, especially when he couldn't move properly... Dammit! He was meant to help Jackson, not leaving him in an uncomfortable state with no way to get out of it! Even now Adrian expected backlash from doing something wrong, but he knew that that didn't necessarily happen with Jackson...which often made him just feel like he disappointed him...

After wiping at the lenses of his glasses with the sleeve of his shirt, Jackson stared up until his eyes adjusted to the light and Adrian's image became clearer. His eyes searched his friend, scanning up and down before settling on the bruised tissue on Adrian's neck.

"That looks painful," he said in a voice barely audible to anyone but himself. It was more of a spoken thought than a directed comment. Adrian was right; it would probably clear up in a few days, but he guessed how tender and fragile that part of his body must feel. At least it's just a bruise. External damage and nothing worse. No popped arteries, no torn vocal cords... It's okay.

Jackson cracked his own neck to one side and then stretched out his arms behind him. The awkward position he had slept in had caused a stiffness to develop in some joints, but the problem bothered him very little; he often had to perform simple stretches in the mornings anyway, and it only took a few seconds to loosen up after waking. There were bigger things to be concerned about, anyway.
Jester could come back today, or tomorrow... And without Lea, we might not be so lucky the next time around.

"Huh... What?" Having heard Adrian's voice again, Jackson snapped out of his thoughts and set his attention on the words being said to him. Adrian was... Apologising? Well, that's fair enough, he thought, glancing down at himself and wrinkling his nose. I bet I reek like dog shit. He made a mental note to take a shower when he got undressed, then he put on a tired smirk to respond to Adrian's babbling. He seemed afraid of something, for some reason. Curious. Maybe he was anxious that Jackson would have one of his outbursts for leaving him in the lounge overnight. He doesn't need to be so guilty... He was tired last night. We both were. I probably would have done the same...

"Hey... Hey, hey, Adrian, calm down. It's fine, I swear. Don't worry, it's fine."

"It's not too bad." Adrian rubbed his neck, still smiling, he hoped Jackson wouldn't worry too much...there was nothing to worry about here... It was just some bruising, soon enough it'd go away and they'd never have to think about that ghoul encounter again... Even if that was the exact opposite of what the boy actually wanted to do.

He was still acting a little nervous, even after Jackson told him it was fine...but was it really fine? It was all fine and well the other saying it, but did he mean it? Or was he just saying it for Adrian's benefit... It wasn't fair on Jackson to be left here, he should have been more responsible, he should have realised that if he started watching a movie on the couch when he was that tired that he would pass out... This wasn't okay, it just wasn't... He couldn't ever leave Jackson in a state like that again.

"I'm just...really really sorry..." Again, Adrian mumbled the words, rubbing his arm and chancing a glance up at Jackson, "It's...okay if you're mad. I would be..." Of course that sentence wasn't completely true... Adrian wouldn't have been mad at Jackson, because he hardly ever got mad at anyone, he just laughed situations off instead of getting mad at them, and Jackson knew that...but...he wanted to know that the other wasn't just saying it was fine. "I...I messed up..." He looked down again and sighed, "I won't do it again. I promise... I didn't...mean to..." All in all Adrian just looked extremely uncomfortable, it was almost like he was waiting to be yelled at. He knew he wasn't going to be yelled at...so...what was he waiting for?

Jackson said it was fine, he shouldn't panic so much about it, he could take him to his room and help him now anyway...

"But, um, do you wanna get changed?" Adrian turned his head to the side, looking up and attempting to smile again. Just treat the situation like an adult would...but...he didn't act like an adult... He didn't understand how they shouted at each other and argued, it didn't make sense to him...he didn't want to argue with anyone...

"Hey. Adrian." Jackson lifted his head up and made an effort to look as awake as possible, widening his eyes, cocking his head to one side and letting that smirk spread across his face a bit more.

He knew that Adrian was sorry - and not just because he kept saying it over and over. He could see it.
Making a big deal out of it isn't going to help matters. The poor guy feels bad enough as it is. There had to be a way to settle the conversation - maybe with a joke, or something else that wouldn't leave Adrian feeling as bad as he did. Maybe he could nestle some humour in a suggestion to get out of the apartment again. Yeah... If I let him know that I'm still up for spending time with him, maybe Adrian won't be so hard on himself like that.

"Like I said, it's fine. But since you're so insistent on making up for it, and I'm so kind, I'll let you pay for my next coffee when we go out." The words were well-ordered, but as expected, Jackson got the tone all wrong; his voice wobbled as he spoke and the inotation was all out of place. Damn. Jackson cursed himself for being so incompetent with the control of his lips and tongue, but the words were out. The message was clear enough. "And... Uh, yeah, I'd love to change, if that's okay. Actually, I'll take a shower while I'm there..."

Adrian managed a smile at Jackson's words, sure he stumbled over them...but he could still tell what the intention was, and it made him smile quite a bit. So...maybe he shouldn't be so worried that Jackson was mad at him...but...he still felt bad about it, he wouldn't be able to stop the feeling, this might help though.

"Alright!" He nodded, grinning and placing his hands behind his back as always, he'd do that, he just had to remember... "But...you've gotta remind me, okay? Cause...I always forget." Adrian didn't have the best memory, and they both knew it, though why his memory was generally quite bad no one really knew... He wasn't even sure he knew himself... He'd always thought it'd be pretty funny if he actually forgot. Whatever, there were more important things for him to think about right now, like getting Jackson into a shower and out of the clothes he was in. The same as always! He'd actually do his job this time.

"C'mon then." The boy moved behind his friend and started to push him, he wondered if Jackson was alright after everything that had gone on... He seemed okay...but...Adrian hoped that he wasn't still freaked... Talking about ghouls! "Oh! And after that... We need to go check e-mails." Adrian giggled and pushed Jackson faster, "It's the weekend, right? That means Quinx results! I wanna know whether I got in or not..." In all the commotion he'd forgotten about the Quinx results...but yeah, they were meant to come this weekend. How exciting!

"Oh yeah, I forgot about that..." Jackson nodded as he recalled being told by Carol after the aptitude test that "I'll let you know the results at the weekend!" I wonder if we'll make it in...

Adrian had a fair chance, he reckoned - the guy had a good body, a good heart and good spatial awareness. Jackson couldn't find any reason for Adrian not to be taken to the hospital for the Quinx surgery; having a kagune and seven times his current strength would make him a top fighter. Jackson wasn't so sure about himself, though. Having a quinque built into his back would make his life as an investigator a lot easier, but the CCG was looking to boost the strong, not patch up the weak. Even so, he balled his fists up as Adrian pushed him into his bedroom.
There's a chance. There's a chance it could happen.

For now, though, he had to get out of his filthy clothes and into the shower. He
did reek - and not just of sweat, but of blood and dirt and... something else he didn't want to think about. All he could think about for now was getting clean, and the first step towards doing that was getting down to the floor.

Jackson didn't wait for Adrian to help him down; as soon as he was far enough into his bedroom, old habit guided his hands to the arm rests on his chair. He pushed back on them with all the strength of his arms, forcing his body to slide forwards, bypassing the foot rest, and then down onto the floor with a sudden and heavy thud. Jackson was left lying against the carpet, his knees falling away from each other and the tops of his shoulders cradled against the edge of the seat.

With a swift movement of the hand, the man ripped his tie from its position beneath his collar, and then threw it forwards onto the foot of his bed.
That's better. The tie especially had been bugging him with its heaviness and tightness around his neck. Now he felt a little more free, a litle more clear-headed. He could think about other things now.

"So, uh... Adrian." Jackson tried to make conversation again. "What do you think it would be like to be a Quinx? It must be weird to have a fifth limb like a kagune, right?"

Last edited by a moderator:

Dead Enmity

"Mhm!" Adrian nodded, heading into the room with Jackson and letting go of his chair, walking around the male as he saw the other starting to move. Imagine being a Quinx...imagine fighting Jester as a Quinx... He'd never expect it. He'd met them, he'd never expect either of them to be Quinx. The simple thought of how fun it would be was enough to make his heart beat that little bit faster. Sure, Adrian did get some kind of joy out of imagining exciting and adventurous situations, but he was never satisfied with just that. He wouldn't be satisfied until he actually lived his fantasies...

"What do I think having Quinx would be like? Um..." The boy went over to Jackson's cupboard, opening it and starting to search through. What should he even put on the bed for the other? Sure, he knew he wanted to get a shower first, but he had to get clothes out... Adrian took a variety of different things out, whilst thinking about Jackson's question, he threw each item onto the bed, before spinning around to look at the male on the ground.

"It'd probably be like a fifth limb...yeah." He sat on the floor in front of Jackson, smiling brightly, "You'd have to get used to controlling it and stuff right? So...probably..." What would it be like to have a kagune? Well...they might find out shortly...but...it wasn't like they were being turned into ghouls. Quinx could still eat human food, they were still human, just modified humans...and that was really cool! Adrian wouldn't want to be a ghoul...he liked food, he liked it's taste... He didn't want that taken away.

The boy moved Jackson's leg slightly, pulling the clothing over it. It wasn't really wet anymore, but it was dirty...so it wasn't exactly easy to get off as such...

"Why did you have to fall into mud?" He whined, although he was only joking, Adrian never complained about things like this... Why would he? It's what came with them being friends and he knew that, so there was nothing to complain about.

Jackson grinned as be unbuttoned his shirt.
"You tell me, mate," he said, glancing up at Adrian through the thick lenses in front of his eyes. His glasses needed cleaning, too... But that could wait until later. For now he simply removed them and threw them up onto the bed with his tie. After a few moments and some careful twisting of the arms, his shirt followed and Jackson was left free of his dirt-crusted clothes at last. Once he could get into the bathroom, he could handle the rest himself - the need for privacy had left him somewhat practiced at completing the rest of this daily routine without extra help.

"You know... It, uh, might just be like a quinque. The controlling of the kagune, I mean - they're basically the same thing, except this is one you don't have to carry with you." He paused for a moment to give the concept more thought. It was a strange way how quinques worked. RC-suppressant steel contained a kakuhou harvested from a ghoul, and the insides of the case folded into a handle when its holder needed to use it. It's such a clever invention. No wonder he felt a rush every time he used one. "Man, it would be nice if humans were born with kagune. We would stand more of a chance against those animals if we had our own built-in weapon."

Dead Enmity

Adrian laughed, still smiling, he guessed he asked for Jackson to say that, but in reply the boy just shrugged. They'd had quite the run in, it was best to get Jackson in the shower quickly, and then whilst the man did that Adrian was going to go and check his e-mails to see if they'd been told what was going on yet. He was excited to see what was going on with the whole Quinx thing, if Teddy and Adrian got in the boy was going to make him keep his promise! Though...in an ideal world, Jackson would also get in. Then they would all be together!

"Mmn...I guess..." He went to help Jackson up and move him to the bathroom, "But...if we were born with kagune...wouldn't that make us ghouls? Adrian didn't know if he was correct or not, "Like...if we were born with it... Wouldn't we have to eat flesh and stuff..." Even the thought of it was slightly disgusting, "I...don't wanna eat humans..." Eating people had always been made out as one of the worst things you could do. It was cannibalism, why would he want that? Though...having a kagune from birth would be cool...but he guessed nothing came without a price... Right?

"I guess that's why it can only be a fantasy. Anyway, you go and check your emails - I'll call you when I'm done." With that word, the door swung closed between Jackson and Adrian, leaving the older of the two alone in the bathroom.

All right, let's get this over with... There was already a towel folded on the floor, and the shampoos and soaps were lined up against the bottom of the shower, ready to be used. Everything was in its place.

Thankfully, the room was fairly small, so Jackson was able to grab hold of various bars and handles to pull himself forwards, sliding on his belly, push against the inner wall of the shower to rock himself into a more upright position. There was little point in attempting to close the door of the shower; his feet were sticking out, and the floor was tiled and waterproof, anway.

Step two. Now that the hard part was over, he could relax and take a couple of minutes to catch his breath. All that was left after that was to grab hold of the stick he kept in the corner. It was originally marketed as a 'back-scratcher' for people with difficulty moving their arms, but Jackson had reassigned it as a tool for reaching the shower handle. With a single movement, he raised it and pushed the handle to one side, letting the water start to flow.

Dead Enmity

"Alright!" Adrian called back, quickly smiling at Jackson as he shut the door and then turning around to exit the room. He needed to go and get his computer and find out what was going on, there should be an e-mail this morning...or maybe it would be tomorrow? Who knew. Well, checking was never any harm. He was too excited to wait and see. He'd check and then he'd make food for himself and Jackson... Not that he was great at that, but it wasn't like he couldn't do something simple.

The boy had bounded out of Jackson's room and had entered his own room at the other side of the hallway. As he barged inside he didn't even bother to close the door, he needed it open anyway to hear his friend, instead rushing to his laptop and pulling up the screen. It took a minute or two to come on, and in comparison no time at all for him to get onto his e-mails.

Everything opened automatically when Adrian started his laptop, meaning he had a bunch of programs, including skype and some games, open in the background, it didn't slow the computer down much...so it was fine. He wasn't interested in closing any of it whilst he could have a very important e-mail. So he started searching.

Hi all,

The leaders of the CCG's medical department and I have been through all of the Quinx applications and we are pleased to inform you that the members of the new squad have been chosen.

Below are the six candidates who have shown the mental and physical aptitude required for the surgery:

Theodore Layton

Irene Garcia

Katherine Danburgh

Adrian Sanister

Ryan Carson

Matthew Morello

Thanks to everyone who applied for Quinx, and congratulations to the lucky few who made it on the list. Accepted Quinx members will be expected to negotiate a time and date for surgery by making a phone call to the medical department by

Adrian couldn't break his gaze away from the screen as he read the message, the names came quickly, at first he missed his own...but he read through again, eyes widening...

Adrian Sanister

A large smile crossed Adrian's face and he almost fell back on his chair, instead falling to the side... He was chosen for Quinx surgery! He was actually chosen for Quinx! Yes! The boy jumped up again, putting his arms on the table and looking at the screen, he needed to ring by Wednesday...okay...yeah...he could do that... This was...actually happening. Adrian couldn't stop his smile, he was so happy! This was going to be great, everything was going to be so much fun! He giggled and laid his head on his hands, staring at the e-mail. There was no way...

There was little time for Adrian to stare at that email and daydream about his new future, for in a flash the monitor's screen was pulsing with the image of a familiar face and name whilst a tinny ringtone played from the speakers.

Irene Garcia calling

Irene Garcia was another ghoul investigator who worked in a different squad to Adrian, Teddy and Jackson. She was known within the CCG for her determination as well as her sharp tongue, which both Jackson and Adrian had felt the sting of when they first met her in the offices a few weeks prior.

Though it was difficult to determine why, Irene appeared to have a habit of picking on the Rank Three investigators like Adrian. She was neither mean nor a bully, but sometimes her snark and snootiness did go too far... But she must have some liking of Adrian to be calling him over Skype.

Dead Enmity

Everything seemed to have been forgotten as Adrian looked at that computer screen, he couldn't believe that they'd actually chosen him... And Teddy too! Everything was perfect. The only person they were missing was... Oh... Jackson. The boy suddenly felt a little worse, doing this without Jackson wouldn't be nearly as fun as doing it with Jackson... He wished the other had been put on the list, but...you didn't always get everything you wanted...

It was as he was staring at the screen and thinking about this that Adrian saw the small black box for Skype appear. Oh! He must have forgotten to close it... Who was calling?

The name that was displayed came as quite a shock to him, Irene? Why was Irene calling him? He turned his head to the side furrowing his eyebrows. Should he answer her? What did she want?

Adrian didn't know Irene extremely well, she just knew she had a tendency to poke fun at the rank three investigators, and whilst it didn't often tend to bother him, other people seemed to get rather pissed off by it.

After a few moments of deliberation, Adrian finally decided to pretty that little green answer button. He was interested in what she wanted, it wasn't like he couldn't end the call if he wanted to... So it wouldn't hurt to talk for a little while!

"Hello?"

At the click of a button, the little box containing Irene's name blew up into a larger window and the girl's image flickered onto the screen, obscuring the dense blackness behind.

"Hey, shorty," Irene taunted in her trademark sing-song tone. With her index finger she played with a lock of hair, twirling it around and around whilst her other hand tapped rhythmically on the wooden desk which was barely visible in the lower chords of the window. The girl was slow and lazy with her speech, and she clearly wasn't in a rush - Irene had not even bothered to apply make-up this morning. That was a rarity, and it made her face appear much more plump and rough than the appearance she usually exhibited.

There was a long pause between Irene's initial greeting and her next words, and she took a long, deep breath before she spoke again.
"Did you get the email or what?"

Of course Irene had to greet him in the way it was customary, by calling him short. Adrian didn't mind, he wasn't the tallest, but his stature was something he'd gotten over a long time ago, he'd always been short for his age, it didn't matter to him anymore. So in reply the boy simply smiled and waved at Irene, she was always snarky, Adrian had gotten used to it after he'd heard her speak the first time... Plus now he was going to have to work in a squad with her, so it would definitely be useful to adapt to her behaviour quickly.

"Mhm!" Of course he got the e-mail, if she did then he did. Adrian laid his head back on the table, simply staring up at the other's screen, "There's...six of us, right? I...don't know who some of them are though..." His enthusiastic and excited tone was impossible to miss, along with the smile on his face. The list wasn't exactly filled with people he was used to being around, he knew Teddy and Irene, but he wasn't sure if he'd seen the other three around or not.

"Are you excited?" He asked, his head snapping up off of the desk in an instant, almost like a dog who had just seen their owner come in with a ball. Whilst Adrian was known for being a little loud, overenthusiastic, and childish, it was obvious in this situation that he was much more eager than usual.

The girl simply snorted at Adrian's question and turned up her nose. There was something in Adrian's tone that reminded her of a child babbling about a trip to a theme park.
Too twitchy, too immature.

"I don't think 'excited' is the right word," Irene wearied with a tut of the tongue. Her eyes flicked back up to the camera, to Adrian's gaze, for a split second before she painted a smirk on her face. "Unless the surgery is going to turn us all back into infants, of course. In which case I would have to practice by agreeing with you."

Suddenly, there was another voice crackling through Adrian's speakers from the other end of the line.
"Babe, who you talking to?" it said in a tone deeper and more masculine than any voice that could belong to a woman. Whoever was speaking was also clearly out of the camera's field of view, for he was nowhere in Adrian's sight and when Irene turned to speak, she faced towards the side.

"Nobody important, Gigi! Just a kid from work," Irene called back to the invisible man.

"Okay, don't be too long, mama says we gotta leave in a few minutes."

"Whatever you say!"

When the external conversation died down into the nothingness of a crackling silence and Irene was left alone to converse once more with Adrian, she folded her fingers together and cast the camera a sidelong glance.
"You've never met 'em, seriously? God, what do you spend all day doing, playing with your quinque?"

"Mmn... Well, you don't have to be excited if you don't want to." Adrian shrugged, he ignored her remarks a lot of the time, of course she was calling him a kid, even Jason called him childish...but Lea was somewhat childish, and she was a First Class Investigator... So...Adrian was sure he'd be fine.

He heard another voice and furrowed his eyebrows in confusion, who was she talking to? Someone called Gigi? At first it seemed like it could be her boyfriend or something, by the way they called her 'babe', but then they said something about a mother and Adrian was left wondering who that was and what was going on. Not that it was any of his business...he'd probably forget about it once they started to talk again.

"Nope." In response the boy shook his head, then faked a pout at her comment about him just playing with his quinque all day. "No... I spend time with Jackson." He replied, that was the truth, he stayed as close to Jackson as possible. His child-like and excitable nature often made him come across as if he'd like to get to know everyone and be friends with everyone, but...it wasn't like that... Deep connections with people were avoided by him, he didn't speak about himself, and he tried to keep relationships no more than friendships, no close friends, no best friends, just...friends and acquaintances... Although...he knew even they could hurt him and betray him...but his logic was that if he wasn't as close with them then they couldn't hurt him as much... He tried not to worry about it too much... Jackson was the only person he trusted with everything, it would probably be like that for awhile. "I just don't know everyone..."

Adrian played with his sleeve, looking up at the camera every now and then,
"Where're you going?" He asked, trying to change the subject. Maybe she didn't want to tell him, but maybe she'd be alright with it...and he was curious to know...

"Jackson? Oh, that prick... Still probably a better father figure than whoever raised you." Irene commented, twirling, twisting and playing with that lock of hair as she half-listened to what Adrian was saying. There was no brightness in her eyes today, no fiery passion or buzzing interest which set her mood apart from anything other than bored.

"Oh, and I'll politely remind you that where I'm going is none of your fucking business. It's only a little coffee shop, the place my fiancé works at, so it isn't of your interest. I'm here to talk about Quinx." There was a slight catch in her voice as she outed that last word; despite her signature confidence and know-it-all persona, she was nervous. Her voice even softened a little after that. "Adrian... We have to get to know the others. After surgery we're going to leave our squads to join up with them."

Dead Enmity

Everything had been exciting and peaceful, he had been fine, everything had been fine... But then she had to say that. Didn't she?

Adrian's entire body tensed, his hand curling up into a fist on the table. Why...would she say that? His parents were fine...they...they loved him... They did. No one understood. They didn't do anything wrong! She didn't know! She wasn't there! She couldn't say
shit!

"They raised me fine." He didn't raise his voice, but that cheery and light tone disappeared. Adrian didn't snap at people often, but he didn't like his family being brought up, so his tone was sharp and he spoke quickly... His family had nothing to do this, no one was there...they didn't know what they were like...so...so what right did they have to comment on his family? No one had any right to! They didn't understand... Like his brother's death, it was another thing Adrian hated being brought up in any way... No one knew his family, the only person who had ever met his brother from the CCG, that he knew of, was Jackson... But no one had met his parents... They'd been in prison for years...

Adrian knew he should hate his parents, Leo despised them, they had always been awful and neglectful to their children, they'd left their oldest son to raise his younger brother with little to no actual help, and they'd killed a person... Leo would always say how they were lucky it wasn't one of them, Adrian's reply was always the same... 'They wouldn't do that.' Leo wasn't so sure. But, unlike Leo, Adrian couldn't hate them, he still loved them and he wouldn't speak badly of them...they were his parents...he was meant to love them no matter what...right? And...they were meant to love him... Leo told him they didn't...they didn't love either of them...but how did he know? He only ever argued with them anyway...

He shouldn't let it upset him...but it did... She knew nothing about his family at all...

But ultimately...she was right.

"Mhm." For a moment he'd zoned out, but he heard something about a coffee shop...and then obviously about having the change squads and go join one with all of the Quinx members. "I don't want to leave Jackson..." Adrian mumbled, his head now laying on his hands, turned away from his screen, he didn't feel like looking at Irene in that moment... He'd...be over it soon, it just took a minute. "And why do we have to get to know them? Why can't we just say hi and do our jobs?"
