Dead Enmity

"Mmn... He's not too bad..." Adrian replied with a shrug, he didn't mind Jason, but the guy did ruin a lot of his fun... He was trying to teach the boy not to toy with his opponent, as that could lead to him losing, but he paid little to no attention to that... What was the fun of fighting with someone if you couldn't mess with them a little first? It just didn't make sense... Jason liked to be boring, and Adrian liked the exact opposite. Lea would have been a much better person to be paired with...but...they wouldn't let her train anyone, no way.

It was just after he said that that he heard the door open and Jackson come out of Carol's office. He was done already? Oh good, they could get home then. Cool. Adrian smiled as Jackson came over to him, but it seemed that the other was a little fed up with being around Carol. He guessed he couldn't blame him, everyone seemed to be, Adrian was the only one who hadn't been that bothered out of the three.

"Okay!" He nodded at Jackson's request, motioning with his head and then looking over to Teddy, "Um, we're going now! So...we'll see you later Teddy!" With a smile, Adrian pushed Jackson a little and then headed towards the elevator himself.

Teddy waved Adrian off as he took Jackson into the elevator.

"Thank God that's over," Jackson croaked as the doors closed and he reached out to click the button for the ground floor. "She... She's worse than I thought. I swear your test lasted longer than mine... How on Earth did you survive? For that long?" He leaned his head back and rested, and the redness began to fade from his cheeks. With a single finger he pushed up his glasses again and than let both arms hand loosely by his sides.

Dead Enmity

Adrian had got into the elevator and leaned against the wall, waiting as the metal can started to move downwards. Jackson really didn't like her then? He honestly didn't get why she annoyed everyone so much...he wasn't bothered too much.

"Mn." Shrugging, he pushed himself away from the door and moved over to the doors of the elevator, "She didn't bother me that much." The familiar ding sounded as they hit the bottom floor and the door slid open easily, allowing the men to move out of the elevator, which Adrian did rather quickly. After looking back for Jackson, he started to make his way to the exit, "She talks a lot, but it's not that bad."

"Well, she was giving me a headache," Jackson said as he left the lift and caught up to Adrian. "It doesn't matter, though. We can, uh, just go home, I think."

The rest of the office building seemed to fly past them as they made their way through. Jackson recognised several familiar faces hovering between workspaces and buzzing from room to room. This area was cleaner than upstairs, somewhat better taken-care of - the carpet still had traces of spills and there were marks on every wall, but by office standards it was a pleasant environment.

By the time the two men reached reception, the large foyer area with wall-length desks, floor-to-ceiling windows and enormous glass doors, the sun had sunk into the pits of early autumn evening. Jackson didn't want to get his phone out to check the time, but he estimated it to be around five o'clock.

"You got the car key?" he chirped up at Adrian, scratching at the layer of stubble on his lower face again.

Dead Enmity

Adrian bounded towards the door of the building, wanting to get home as soon as possible. For some reason he just felt like sleeping, even though he still had all the energy in the world...he just wanted to nap for a few minutes or something.

He put his hands out, pushing on the door to the building and then holding it open for Jackson, smiling at the other. It felt good to be outside again, the cold autumn air really was a pleasure to him at this point. That building could get so stuffy...he didn't like hot places, the cold was much better.

"Mhm! I've got them!" He replied, nodding and then letting go of the door once Jackson was out. Honestly, Adrian didn't know how his friend trusted him in a car, he'd drive as fast as possible and he wasn't careful at all. In fact he probably would have done so many reckless things if there weren't laws in place to stop him doing so.

As they wrapped around the building and to the car park the boy pulled out his key, walking over to a blue ford, spinning around to look at Jackson as he opened it.
"I wanna get home already..." He whined, "There's nothing to do here..."

Jackson turned his head to the side, but nodded in silent agreement. The sky was already darkening and the investigators' shadows were growing long and thin in the sun's weaker rays. There really wasn't much left of the day at this time in the evening, especially in autumn. And, as much as he disliked cars, he felt himself itching to be lifted into his seat so they could get back to home base.

"Is there supposed to be anything decent on TV tonight?" Jackson wondered out loud. Sometimes tuning in was the only way to tune out of the world, and mind-bending or even just simply ridiculous cinematographic fiction was a favourite of his pastimes.

Dead Enmity

"Mmn...dunno." Adrian replied, moving right over to the car and then opening the doors. He threw his keys into the front and then leaned against the car, waiting for Jackson. Honestly, he really didn't know how he was trusted with the guy. The boy was so irresponsible and acted like a child, he could hardly even look after himself...but...he still somehow managed to remember what he needed to do to help Jackson, it was about the only thing he ever remembered.

"When we get back..." He rubbed his eyes, "Can I sleep?" Adrian would probably just go to his room and fall asleep when they finally got him, as there was really nothing else for him to do...and now he was tired... Jackson could do whatever he wanted, and if he needed the other he'd probably just shout him. The boy didn't mind being woken up for anything.

"Well, not on the couch," Jackson answered with a flicker of a smile. He moved himself forwards into the wide crevice between the car's interior and open door, then waited, feeling a little twinge of guilt in his throat. In some ways, he actually felt sorry for Adrian - being saddled with Jackson and forced to carry him around from place to place like a rag-doll. Heck, he was surprised that the guy didn't have biceps as thick as logs after all of the lifting; from head to toe, Jackson was actually a lot taller than Adrian and a lot heavier, too. It was a miracle that he could ever manage it at all. At least I can navigate, he reasoned to himself. Remembering routes, map-reading - he could still be useful on the roads, thanks to the fully-functional and broad mind he possessed.

Stars were beginning to fade into life in the sky above the two men, and the moon hung miles above, shining its cold white light down on their faces. Jackson felt his shoulders tremble in a long and sudden shiver as the autumn's crisp night air engulfed the city. Other junior investigators were beginning to swarm out of the office building. Teddy was among them, but instead of acknowledging his squad-mates, he simply power-walked down to his own Fiat and escaped to the main road in a knot of other cars and motorcycles.

"I tell you what - you... You can go to bed early tonight, I'll stay up in the lounge. Deal?"

Adrian laughed and nodded, of course he wouldn't go to sleep on the couch, if Jackson wanted to watch television then Adrian would just stay out of his way instead of going to sleep in the living room. He was definitely looking forwards to getting home though, usually he didn't like going home and doing nothing, but today was an exception. The quicker the day was over, the quicker he got that e-mail.

The boy walked over to the other side of the car and looked from Jackson to the seat. Okay, so this was the bit he didn't enjoy so much. Adrian wasn't exactly all that strong, but somehow he always managed to lift Jackson. It wasn't that far, if he'd been asked to carry the guy he'd definitely fail, he couldn't hold him for more than a few seconds at a time... It was difficult... After smiling at Jackson, Adrian leaned down and put his hands under the other's knees to lift him up. He mainly used his legs to make sure he didn't drop the other and it took a few seconds but eventually he actually managed to get Jackson into the car. After that he folded up the wheelchair and placed it in the back, closing both doors to walk around to the driver's seat.

"Y'know..." Adrian started as he jumped into the seat, slamming his door shut, "I can stay up if you want me to..." He didn't want to leave Jackson on his own if he'd rather the other be around, it was honestly fine. Anyway, it was getting late...they should probably worry about getting back. He started the car and reversed, quickly heading out onto the road. If it had been anyone else in that car Adrian probably would have acted rather recklessly, but it was Jackson, and he didn't really want to hurt him.

Jackson stayed silent and folded his arms inwards as he was lifted up. He didn't like it, but the procedure was routine; lift, carry, drop. There were no complaints left unsaid, no discomforts worth mentioning because their words had already been used and worn out.
Besides, it would just make things more awkward.

As soon as he heard the door slam to his left, Jackson reached up and grabbed at the tongue of the seatbelt with his somewhat powerful arms. He yanked it down and clipped it into the buckle, then folded away the visor and breathed a shallow sigh as he dropped his arms to relax.

"Huh?" Jackson jerked his head to the right to face Adrian. He's gonna stay up? His forehead creased in a frown and the man turned wall-eyed as he fell back into deep thought.

Jackson knew that Adrian remembered his mistrust for cars, but sometimes Jackson felt as though his friend was a little too careful.
Hypocrite, said a voide in his head. But it's true. Once upon a time the two of them were just kids doing all they could to act themselves. Jackson knew what Adrian was really like - that loud, self-driven wonder... He also realised that the boy was restraining himself, pretending to be the calm and quiet carer, for his sake. Often times it even felt as though Adrian got so invested in looking after Jackson that he forgot about his own life. There was a sudden pang of guilt in Jackson's heart. I'm distancing him from himself. He had to put an end to it at some point, or else Adrian could... He could disappear.

"No, no, don't do that," Jackson suddenly blurted, rubbing his left wrist with the thumb of his right hand. "You don't have to. I mean, you're tired, look, I can see it in your face. Just go to bed."

Dead Enmity

Adrian looked over to Jackson, eyebrows furrowed... The other was telling him to go to bed, but should he really do that? Should he really leave Jackson all alone? It wasn't that he didn't trust the other to be independent and take care of himself, it was more of he'd feel guilty if anything did happen...and he didn't want anything to happen to him...

"Are...Are you sure?" He asked, turning his eyes back to the road as they drove along it, "I mean...I...don't have to. I'll be fine." The boy smiled reassuringly, "I really don't mind." So maybe he did put a lot of his energy outside work into trying to care for Jackson, it wasn't fair that the other ended up like he did...and...Adrian didn't want him to feel bad about him, but he also didn't want to leave him incapable of doing something. Plus he really didn't have much that was better to do, and he'd rather be with his friend than anywhere else... Even if he did forget about himself a lot...

To most Adrian came across as childish, and he was, he did have to have someone watching over him. If Jackson wasn't around he probably would have gotten himself into a bunch of stupid situations, or have done a bunch of stupid things, but it didn't mean he was incapable of looking after someone else... He did his best, that's all that could be asked of him.

"Anyway... We can talk about it when we get home, right?" Again he smiled, turning off down the street that led to their apartment block, it hadn't taken long to get them back to the place, and Adrian was parking the car in no time...he just wanted to get inside... The place was surprisingly empty that night...strange...

"And I don't mind either," he mumbled, passing his hand through the mop of blond hair on his head to push it out of his face. He did worry for Adrian and felt the urge to just burst out with reassurance such as, "I'll be fine for one night," or "Your rest is more important." But for some reason, he said none of this. Maybe it was nerves, maybe it was a weird type of bitterness or maybe he had simply given up trying to convince him. Either way, Jackson kept his mouth shut for the remainder of the journey, his mind quietly ticking away all the while.

Jackson unbuckled his seatbelt the moment Adrian pulled into their designated space, throwing the tongue to the side and listening to the rushed
whirr as it the belt reeled itself back into the pulley on the wall.Thankfully, the two rookies didn't live far from their workplace and thus the ride hadn't been too hard on Adrian's Ford. Even with both of their salaries combined, there was little room to spare after juggling a car, the rent and other assets like the internet and gas bills.

I wonder how much the Quinx compensation is." The thought had crossed Jackson's mind before, but the fact that he still didn't know the exact figure was infuriating. He hated knowing that there was something he didn't know - and especially if it was something as close to home as Quinx. Nevermind, it doesn't matter now. When one or other of us gets promoted, we'll be able to spare a bit extra.

For now, Jackson simply had to wait for Adrian to get him out of that metal cage and back to moving on his own again. The windows were rolled up and the doors closed, but it did seem somewhat quiet compared to usual. At this time of day their younger neighbours would usually be making a racket or piling up at the building's main entrance. But tonight there was nothing.
Finally, a night with some actual peace.

Dead Enmity

It was better not to reply to Jackson, Adrian didn't know what else to say anyway... Did he even have anything to say? He'd decided he'd stay up for a bit longer at least, then he'd go to sleep... It wasn't even that late, he shouldn't be sleeping yet anyway. He pulled into their car parking spot and then turned off the engine, grabbing the keys. Pushing his door open, he jumped out and headed around to the other side of the vehicle to get out Jackson's wheelchair.

Adrian made sure that he worked quickly, unfolding the wheelchair and placing it next to the door, before grabbing Jackson and slowly lifting him back into the wheelchair. Then he smiled, slamming the car door shut before the familiar bleeping noise was heard, signifying that the vehicle was now locked. Honestly, Adrian didn't like driving, but he'd do it because he had to, he'd much rather someone else drove so that he could look around a bit more instead of focusing on a road.

"Let's go inside!" The boy exclaimed, bounding forwards, he couldn't wait to get indoors again and relax... Who actually liked relaxing? Well...most people, apart from Adrian, it was strange for him to actually want to relax. Though apparently that was to be interrupted, since as he was half way across the car park, heading towards the apartment building, he heard a loud crash. Adrian stopped, blinking and looking around, what was that noise?

Again there was another crash, it sounded like it was coming from under the bridge to their left, the opposite direction. Adrian didn't move, he just stared in the direction...why was he drawn to that noise? It was none of his business...yet... And again. The crashing didn't stop, it kept going, but it wasn't rhythmical, it was random... What...was that?

"Jackson...?"

Jackson tightly clenched his jaw and tensed up as he was lifted out of the car. A number of unsavoury words darted through his head as the wave of embarrassment ran through him, but the thoughts cleared as soon as he was placed back in his chair. Suddenly mobile and free to move once more, he eagerly traced Adrian's path and tried to forget how heavy he must be in the smaller boy's comparitively thin arms.

"Yeah, let's, let's be quick about it," Jackson advised as loudly as he could, trying to project his somewhat soft voice across the four or so metres between him and Adrian. "I could really go for a pot of couscous, too..."

Jackson was just about catching up to Adrian when he heard the first crash. The man stiffened and paused on the spot to listen out for the noise.

Crash.

Crash.

Crash.

The crashes weren't stopping. Jackson kept still, frozen in place as he listened to the sounds. Each time the crashing came back, it felt even louder and closer than the last, even though his own paranoia was likely to blame for the effect. Whether the closeness was real or not was irrelevant, though; it didn't stop the sweat gathering on Jackson's forehead, nor did it stop the hairs on the back of his neck from rising.
This isn't normal, he decided as his eyes glinted with a sudden realisation. These sounds were much, much louder than the noises they usually heard at this time of the day. No rowdy kids could make that much of a racket, no way...

Crash, crash. The noises kept coming. "Adrian, what is that?" Jackson quivered, finally regaining enough control of his lips and tongue to speak. "Can... Can we go and - and check it out?"

Last edited by a moderator:

Dead Enmity

Adrian didn't answer Jackson at first, instead he stood there, listening. It sounded like something hitting into a wall, even shattering it. No, not shattering it, that would have brought the bridge down...surely... Then...what was going on there?

"Huh?" His attention turned to Jackson, then back to the bridge, "Yeah. Let's go." With that he set off in a run, determined to find out what that noise was. It wasn't natural, but it wasn't building works or something, not, too arrhythmical to be so. There crashes were sporadic, they varied in amplitude, you really couldn't tell what you were going to hear next... Was someone hurt? Was someone hurting someone? Or were they just being paranoid... Something was definitely going on, if Jackson heard it too then it wasn't just his imagination.

The boy sprinted down to the bridge, the crashes almost deafening now, and pressed his back against one of the outside walls. He heard something that sounded oddly like a girl giggling, then the sound of metal clanking against something... There was the skidding of feet, more crashes and smashes, including smaller ones, but no voices at that moment. There were definitely people inside. Suddenly Adrian felt excited. If there was a fight going on, he wanted to check it out! That would be so cool! But he needed to know Jackson was around as well...

"Adrian!?" Jackson stared as his friend sprinted off in the direction of the noise, leaving him behind in the car park. "Shit," he hissed under his breath, then turned himself around to look for Adrian.

Where the hell did he go? There was no sight of Adrian anymore; Jackson was just too slow to keep up. But he had to follow him, he had to... Whatever was going on at the source of those noises sounded dangerous, and he had to be at Adrian's side if he was going to dive in head-first. But where is he?

Crash. Jackson whipped his head around to the direction of the next noise. Adrian was going for the source, so he must be somewhere in that direction. Fumbling with his fingers, Agonisingly slowly, Jackson propelled himself out of the car park, back onto the road. Where is he? Where's Adrian? He was becoming frantic now. Every artery and vein in his body pulsed with the beats of his thudding heart, and there was still no sign of the companion who had gone running off so recklessly. Did Adrian even have a quinque with him? Oh no, oh no. Whether it was instinct picked up from acting as the younger boy's guardian or whether it was just nerves, Jackson's worry for Adrian swelled with each second of isolation.

Should I call out? Is it safe? There was no way of knowing what kind of noise could attract whatever it was making all the crashing. "Adrian," Jackson stage-whispered as he rounded a corner and started his way down the next road. No response. "Adrian!" Somewhat more loudly, he tried again, but the emptiness that echoed back told that they must be out of earshot of one another.

Suddenly, between the crashes, he heard something else. Scuffling of soles on tarmac. The scraping of metal. It was distant, but all too clear. And was that... A laugh?
Oh no. "Adrian!" Jackson was calling now, as loudly as his weak voice would allow, and he was back to moving as quickly as he could. There was a fight, something was going on. It's going to be a ghoul, there's going to be a ghoul there, Adrian's going to get hurt...

Dead Enmity

The crashing was all too thrilling, and Adrian's mind was taken off of Jackson in seconds, it was instead focusing on those noises... He wanted to know what was going on... He had to know what was going on... He had to know now... He had to. He had to! He didn't really think as he pushed himself off of the wall and then ran around the corner, looking for the source of the noise. Sooner or later he'd find it. It was close now.

There was a figure pushed out of the bridge, small, agile, quick on their feet, and then another followed. The second person to jump out seemed a little taller, they were wearing what seemed to be a dark hoodie and...a mask? It was strange to say the least, it covered half of the person's face and the base colour was white, with gold curls randomly placed all over and a strip of black vertically downwards across one eye. On the top of that was what looked slightly like a jester's hat, red with three spikes coming off of it, all with small golden bells on the end that jingled with each movement the person made.

That jingle could be heard again as the person jumped into the air, something extending from what seemed like their lower back before crashing towards the person before them. The smaller individual jumped out of the way at the last moment, letting the strange article crash down into the ground. The figure that had just jumped out of the way had jumped right into a street light, revealing all of their features. Bright eyes, long blonde hair, a rather psychotic grin on their face. Lea. She held a large red weapon in her hand, shaped like a jagged axe.

"Now now, Jester." Lea giggled, "We've just begun. Save something for later." She spun the weapon in her hand, addressing the person who was now standing on the ground across from her. It was now obvious that the other person was a ghoul, their kagune suspended in mid air behind them. It looked like the person possessed a tail-like bikaku, split in half with jagged edges and a pointed end like a scorpion's tail. "What're you waiting for?" Lea addressed them again, "You expect one of us to die here, right? Come on then!"

Jester's head snapped to the side, the bells jingling again, but he didn't move.

"Oh," Lea giggled, "And when you die...I'll be taking that mask. I'll wear it everywhere!" Her voice was raised at the end of her sentence as she ran in, jumping into the air just to bring her quinque down onto Jester. They, of course, avoided it and sent their own attack flying towards Lea, their kagune extending in an attempt to pierce her. Lea was pushing Jester backwards, but he didn't seem to be putting in as much effort as was expected from a high rank ghoul. It seemed like he was simply dodging, defending, and counter attacking. If Lea wasn't attacking with her quinque, then Jester was attacking with their kagune, both were quick, but Lea seemed slightly faster... At that moment.

"And when you die... I'll be taking that mask." Jackson heard the voice ringing out from somewhere nearby as he steered into a thin alleyway. The sound bounced off the walls closing in to his left and right, but a twist of the neck and a moment of thinking told him that the voice's owner was up ahead somewhere. But that voice isn't Adrian, he thought, the panic within him rising again. That's a girl's voice, and someone's going to die. Someone's going to die, somebody is going to die right there.

The situation was beginning to feel hopeless. The promise of death lingered in the air and Adrian's presence was stale. Could Jackson really do anything to help? The answer was beyond him, but so was giving up. He was weak, but he couldn't just sit there like a rabbit in headlights and pray for his friend's safety. If there was a danger, if there was death, he had to see it with his own eyes. With an unsteady hand, he pushed up his glasses and carried on towards the noises.

It took a minute or two more of navigation, but eventually Jackson reached what he hoped was definitely not his destination. There was a man stood several metres ahead of him. Short, lean, dark-haired.
Adrian. Had the coast have been clear, Jackson might have felt relieved, maybe even called out and grinned, but he did not - for ahead of him was a frightening scene he had only before seen on tape.

Lea. A ghoul. Both parties clearly engaged in combat, using their quinque and kagune respectively to try and end the other's life before they themselves were impaled. A small whimper escaped Jackson's throat.
Oh no, oh no. What if Lea couldn't keep up? What if the ghoul came for him or Adrian? I don't know how to fight. I don't know how to help. He hadn't even brought his quinque with him.

Unable to find the words to announce his ideas, Jackson simply approached Adrian and tugged at his clothing with a hand. His eyes were not looking at the boy, but at Lea and her ghoulish opponent.

Dead Enmity

Adrian felt a tugging on his clothing, his head quickly snapping around to see who was the source of the pulling, luckily it was only Jackson. The other's attention was on what Adrian's attention just had been, the fight... This...was no normal C-Class ghoul...and Lea was fighting it alone... That was so cool! The boy was both intrigued and amazed by the other's actions, she was amazing, the way she kept up with the other... How did she do it? The girl really was amazing, they darted and weaved in between each other, Jester staying on the defensive, Lea on the offensive. He seemed to be waiting. She wasn't.

The two were slowing moving towards Adrian and Jackson...and Adrian was accidentally moving forwards. He was enthralled, he didn't realise he was doing it. It seemed that he wasn't going completely unnoticed though... A dark eye locked with his and everything seemed to stop for a second, Jester backed up, never breaking eye contact with Adrian. Adrian was stuck staring at Jester as well, for some reason he couldn't break his gaze away, but...the ghoul noticing them definitely wasn't a good thing.

Jester's gaze finally broke from Adrian and flicked to Jackson, just as Lea backed up and turned around, noticing her opponent's gaze shift. She saw Adrian and Jackson and her eyebrows raised...

"Jackson...? Ada?" The girl turned her head to the side, but snapped it back to Jester as she heard the shifting of feet. Uh oh... The two of them locked eyes, but by the time she'd attempted to run to Jester' position, he had already gone to attack Adrian and Jackson. Lea really shouldn't have mentioned that she knew them.

The kagune on his back extended towards them again, and Adrian didn't really react to it...he didn't look afraid, but he didn't react either. They would have been hit, if it wasn't for Lea slicing at Jester's kagune and getting in between the two and the ghoul at the last second.

"Preying on innocent bystanders? What? Did you not eat this month?" She giggled, "Oh, but you did...didn't you, Jester? Who was it again... Jason's...nephew? The one he's been looking after for years? Yeah. I believe it was him, wasn't it?" The sound of bells could be heard as Jester moved his head, but...didn't reply. "You know who Jason is, don't you? After all, you've seen him before. You knew quite a few of our names now." Again she sliced at him and he blocked her with his kagune. She attacked again and again, coming in at multiple angles, trying to move Jester away from the two, but he was standing his ground now, blocking and dodging all of her attacks quickly, then countering with his own, which she blocked in return.

"Ada! Jackson!" Lea didn't sound worried, "What're you guys doing here?!" The end of a kagune smashed into the ground, before Lea used it to push herself up into the air and fall behind Jester, forcing him to turn in order to not be hit, then she moved to get in between Adrian and Jackson and the ghoul again, she couldn't let him hurt them, she'd get into trouble for that.

Jackson's arm hung frozen in the air where Adrian had been stood next to him. He couldn't speak as his wide-stretched eyes flitted from Jester to Lea, then Jester again. All he could do was watch with a gaping mouth the scene unfolding before him.

What is Adrian doing!? There was another pang of horror as Adrian started towards Jester. Where did he think he was going? That's dangerous! This was Jester, the case Minnie had forbidden Jackson's involvement in. Jester... The high-rated ghoul who had been slaughtering the London branch's senior investigators. Jackson remembered Minnie's words from that very same day and gulped down his own breath. Someone's going to die.

Despite himself, Jackson was fairly impressed with Lea's capability on the battle field. The way she moved, the speed at which she moved to defend her juniors... She really was amazing. It was no wonder Adrian looked so entranced, but a strong sense of interest didn't make the situation any less lethal, so Jackson clumsily took himself forwards again and to Adrian's side. He brushed a hand against the boy's arm as a signal to stop moving.

Huh? Jackson's head flicked up again as Lea addressed him. He was here, Adrian was here... What were they doing? Part of him wanted to blurt out, "We wanted to help," but there was no telling of that statement's degree of truth. Maybe Adrian did want to help. Maybe he was just there for the sake of it. Either answer would sound ridiculous. But does that matter? barked a voice in Jackson's head. Someone's going to die if you don't do something.

"I - we, er, uh... We were go-going to try and, um, we wanted to see what the noise was," Jackson quaked, barely audible above the noise and falling over his words as he tried to build his meaning into words on the spot.

Dead Enmity

"Oh. I see." Lea laughed, but her gaze never left Jester, she couldn't afford to look away with a ghoul such as him, "Y'know. If you weren't a ghoul, I think we'd be a perfect match!" Her attacks became quicker and more violent against the ghoul, but he wasn't in a bad position either. The two jumped, colliding in mid air before Lea kicked at Jester, sending both of them back to the ground around a meter of two away from each other.

"As a responsible First Class Investigator." Lea started, addressing the two behind her, "I should probably tell you to get out of here!" She laughed and watched as Jester stood looking at her, what was definitely strange about this fight was that Jester was no as aggressive as one would have expected. He could have attacked Lea again at any point whilst she spoke, which was when her attention was slightly redirected, but he waited. He waited where he was until she seemed ready to focus back on combat, and all this time he hadn't spoken a word. "Hey, Jessie." Lea's attention was fully on Jester again, "Don't act like you're all high and mighty, you know you want this as much as I do." The girl pointed her weapon at him, laughing, "I wonder... You're not one for revenge, are you?" She was teasing him, Lea hadn't even started yet.

Everything was silent for a moment, Lea's grin and bright eyes focusing on the ghouls, whilst Jester kept his face completely neutral, you couldn't have told what he was think even if you were to stare at him for hours.

"It really was a shame..." The words came from Lea, but they immediately caught Jester's attention, "That such a child had to be born a ghoul, and she was really sweet too... What a shame..." Unless you were watching carefully, not change in Jester would be detected, but his hands started to ball into fists at his side. "How old was she? Twelve? Thirteen? All she wanted was to reason with us, she wanted peace, right? But what happened to her?"

Silence.

"What happened to her Jester?" Lea repeated. No answer. "Kino cut her down, and it was your fault! You caused it. I wonder who else blamed you for it... Hm?" Now there was a visible scowl on the ghoul's face, and Lea's lit up with excitement. "Oh so you do want revenge! Well, I'm the next best thing to Kino, she is my best friend after all." The weapon in Lea's hand moved as she motioned Jester towards her, "Come on then. Kill me. Do it. I dare you ~ !"

There was the scuffling of feet as the ghoul changed positions and then he ran, he launched himself at her and she was ready for his attack. It was the fastest Jester had attacked the entire fight, but Lea wasn't new to this, she didn't think she could get tricked out, and she didn't react until it was too late.

Jester seemed to attack with his kagune, going straight for Lea, but what he did instead was ran at her and slid past her right side at the last second, making a B-line for Adrian and Jackson. Lea spun around, but by that point Jester had already arrived at the two. He kicked at Jackson's wheelchair, whilst grabbing for Adrian's neck and throwing him against the wall, keeping hold. Of course he'd already worked out that if he kicked over Jackson's wheelchair the other wouldn't be able to do much, and he didn't know whether Adrian was a threat or not, but either way... He was livid.

"Aw goddammit!" Lea whined, "If you guys die I'm gonna get in so much trouble!" She went to step forwards, but Jester stamped his foot on the ground, signifying for her to stop. "Seriously? C'mon Jessie, I need them alive." She was talking as if he'd just taken something off of her and she wanted it back, not as if this was a life or death situation, but Lea knew she had to be careful about this.

Jackson remained still as he waited beside Adrian, watching the whirlwind of a fight flashing in front of his eyes.
Attack, dodge, oh, that was a feint... Lea seemed so practiced with her movements, almost as though she were weaving her way through Jester's kagune.

It's like a spontaneous dance routine. Is this what it means to be an investigator? The man gritted his teeth together. Perhaps, if he hadn't been so terrified, he would have made a remark about how beautiful the movements were. But he stayed silent, for the human and the animal in front of him were out for each other's blood. Someone's going to die.

Then suddenly, as if out of nowhere, the ghoul was powering towards him and Adrian. What had happened? Just a moment ago Jester had been engaged in combat with Lea, but now he was coming, he was getting close, he was -

Crash. Jackson managed a stifled cry as the world suddenly seemed to turn on its side. He felt concrete smashing against the side of his head, he was dizzy, he couldn't move.

"What happened?" he mouthed to nobody in particular. His face was pressed into the ground. I fell over. And, out of the corner of his eye... "No!" The ghoul had Adrian up against a wall, held against the hard brick by his throat, and the scent of blood hung sickeningly in the air.

"Adrian! Adrian! L-Lea, get him!" Jackson pounded at the concrete with a heavy fist, a little spark of anger igniting beneath the fear. Lea wasn't doing anything! She was just talking, speaking as though this ghoul were nothing more than an inconvenience, knowing perfectly well how useless Jackson's presence was when he was sprawled across the ground. This woman is supposed to be our leader!

"Lea, please!"" he called again. Even though he was in the wrong position to get a clear view, Jackson was already imagining the look Adrian must have on his face. Oh no, oh no...

Dead Enmity

It all happened too fast for Adrian take in what was going on around him, one second he was standing watching a fight, the next a ghoul had him pinned by his neck to a wall... Was it strange that he wasn't all that scared? He was just a little in shock, he still hadn't come to grips with what was happening...but he wasn't scared. A ghoul had him trapped up against a wall by his neck and he could only be confused and shocked. He was staring at something that could end his life, the same thing that had ended his brother's life, yet he was overcome with fascination and wonder... Why did he look so...sad?

"I'm working on it Jackson. Do you want him to crush Adrian's throat?" Lea rolled her eyes, of course they'd be scared, the both of them could be killed right now, but she couldn't just rush him...he'd snap Adrian's neck if she did that. Honestly, keeping others alive wasn't one of Lea's strong points, she preferred to work with people who could handle themselves. Damn those two had put her in a weaker position. "C'mon..."

"Mmn... What's wrong?" The voice was Adrian's, slightly choked due to the pressure on his throat, but audible. That caught Jester's attention, and Lea's too. The boy was staring directly at the ghoul, and this close he could see not just the anger in his eyes, but also the sadness... It was a habit or Adrian's to ask people what was wrong when they looked like that, apparently that habit extended even in life or death situations. Everything was silent, and he was staring into the eyes of death. Pitch black...blood red...and...awfully lonely.

Jester didn't seem to understand, he looked at Adrian like he was stupid, he should be terrified after all, but the guy was asking what was wrong... Was he crazy? The ghoul felt hands wrap around his arm and attempt to push him away, followed by a whine from the boy he was holding up by the throat. He didn't like it and he wanted Jester to let go... It didn't make sense, he should be afraid. His attention had been totally pulled away from Lea, now he was focus on Adrian, his kagune wrapping around him, pointed ends pointing down at Adrian in an attempt to make him seem a little more threatening...but no change... The ghoul heard the cry out from the other male on the floor and simply batted the guy's wheelchair with his kagune to get him to shut up, if that guy made another noise...

The thing was, Jester was paying too much attention to the people who weren't the actual threat, and Lea had taken advantage of it. Her quinque came powering down onto Jester's arm, causing a cry out from the ghoul and for him to retract his arm so that it wasn't cut off, dropping Adrian in the process. Adrian, taking the opportunity, proceeded to kick him in the abdomen, making Jester stumble backwards and almost fall over.

Lea laughed, watching as Jester grabbed hold of his arm, his attention suddenly switched to Jackson on the floor, his kagune stabbing down towards the male, just to be knocked out of the way by Lea as she got in between them.

"Okay." She sighed, "Play time is over. I'll kill you now."

"Lea..." Jackson buried his face in his arms and felt for the scratches on his cheek. They stung, but they weren't deep. I'm okay, but... Adrian was still pinned up against the wall, and he was trying to say something. He was being choked. He was going to be strangled right there, killed by a ghoul like Leo had been all those years ago. And what was Lea doing?

Suddenly there was a clattering sound from somewhere close behind Jackson. He couldn't move his head in time to see what was happening, but in the corner of his vision he thought he could see a flicker of the ghoul's twin-tailed kagune, the appendage swishing at something, then his chair flying past and into the opposite wall.
"D-Damn it." Jackson cursed and slammed his balled fist against the ground again. He felt so useless without a quinque to pick him up and strike back with. Adrian was going to die, and it would be his fault because he came unprepared.

The sound of movement caught Jackson's attention again. He heard footsteps - Adrian's footsteps, in fact. He recognised the pattern of his friend's footwork.
"Adrian!" Then the kagune was back, heading towards him, and Lea was suddenly there to intercept the strike. Jackson's adrenaline rush peaked; he had almost just witnessed his own death.

I get why this guy's supposed to be too dangerous for us, he thought just as something cold and wet rolled down his neck. Then he felt it again. Drips and drops of rain were beginning to cascade from the sky which had previously been empty but for the stars many miles above them. They got faster, heavier. Puddles began to form atop the ground, and Jackson's hair plastered to his pale skin.

"Lea, you can do it, you can kill it," the man breathed up at Lea, though he couldn't see her face. The sooner this ordeal was over, the better - so long as the three of them made it out alive together.

Dead Enmity

Adrian rubbed his neck as Lea and Jester stared each other down once again, he could have killed him...but he didn't... Why didn't he? Why didn't he just snap his neck or stab him or something? Get it over with... Now that he was thinking about it, it didn't make a lot of sense... How did they...even get into this fight? Why was he thinking about this? No, he needed to stop. Ghouls didn't have the same emotions as them, they couldn't feel how humans could, they were just animals...they didn't care about others... That was it, no more thinking about it. No more.

Lea and Jester simply stared at each other as the rain started, how scenic... Lea was going to enjoy with.

"Alright, catch me if you can!" She exclaimed, giggling and launching herself at the ghouls. She kept up with him too well, but now they were both on the offensive. The two were forced into walls, kagune and quinque hitting each other, hitting the ground, slicing through anything they could find. Lea was the one who got the next attack that hit, slicing part of Jester's hand off with her quinque and causing the other to retreat slightly. There was a screech as he attacked her, sending the girl flying into a wall before she could run out of the way. Droplets of blood dropped down onto the floor along with the rain, the water quickly washing them away... Jester didn't let up, he didn't give Lea time to recover. She had to roll out of the way of several attacks, and whilst she'd harmed the ghoul, she hadn't managed to get off any fatal blows... He was quick as well.

Lea's quinque made contact with Jester's right arm, slicing into him again, he screamed, grabbed the weapon and threw her and it. The quinque skidded across the floor, whilst Lea went into a wall again. She picked herself up like she hadn't just been thrown with great force...but he quinque... They both looked towards it at the same time, but Jester acted first, launching both of his tails towards Lea, she didn't have time to care about her quinque as she tried to dodge attack after attack, weaving in and out of the ghoul's kagune. It was dangerous to do this for too long... He'd catch her out eventually.

It seemed like that time had come as she was pushed even further away from her quinque. A tail came barrelling down to her left, before another went to hit her straight on. She was forced to move right. Jester came in and kicked, sending Lea skidding backwards. The girl grinned and ran at him again, looking like she was going to attack, but jumping at the last second, however, Jester expected it, he blocked her, she used him as a pivoting point to get on the other side of him, his kagune came down again.

Clink.

Someone stood in front of Lea, quinque blocking the kagune. Adrian. Adrian had picked up Lea's quinque in all of the commotion and had now moved into the fray. His face was inquisitive as he stared at Jester, head slightly tilted to the side. The two simply stood pushing at each other, but Adrian knew he couldn't keep this up, he wasn't as strong as this ghoul. He stared at Jester, crimson eyes staring back at him. For a second they both seemed like they were thinking the same thing...

This guy.

Adrian broken the eye contact, realising he couldn't keep blocking the attack as Jester was pushing him backwards, he swiped at the ghoul's legs, but his attack was jumped. Then there were a series of quickfire attacks launched at Adrian from the ghoul, he managed to block them all with Lea's quinque, the girl staring on in amusement. Though, Adrian knew he wasn't at this ghoul's level, and that was proved after a an attack from one of the ghoul's tails caused him to jump into the air, only to be batted out of it by the other tail. As he hit the ground Adrian threw the quinque back to Lea, who caught it with ease.

"Thanks ~ !" She called, smiling widely, "And, that was good, Ada. For a rookie." After sticking her tongue out at him, she blocked one of Jester's attacks that was aimed towards the boy and they continued going at it, back and forth, but the two had injured each other. Jester was bleeding more than Lea, but Lea wasn't unscathed... It seemed that one of them would have to make quite the move to win.

Having just been knocked out of the air, Adrian shook his head and stood up, gazing at the fight for a second. Then he remembered Jackson, his eyes scanned for the other, landing on the floor not too far away. Hurriedly, he ran over, kneeling down beside his friend and helping him to sit up.

"Jackson! Are...Are you okay?" He turned his head to the side, blinking a few times. His eyes were alive, that was fun...the brief moment he had been fighting Jester was...fun...but...something about it was bugging him, he didn't know what exactly... He guessed it didn't matter right now, they probably shouldn't be here... Even if he did want to fight more...
