Jackson had entered his own bedroom immediately after returning to the apartment. Normally he would keep the door open, letting him easily move between rooms - but this time closing the door was his first action upon getting inside. To close the door was to close himself off from the outside world, close the world off from him. But he still saw the fight whenever he closed his eyes..

Stupid. You idiot. You blundering fool. Cockwomble. Why did their nice trip to a coffee shop end in blood and screams ? I can't fucking control myself. Why had Adrian got hurt so badly that he needed stitches and strong painkillers? Because I was too fucking blind to even consider the consequences. Why had the two of them got in trouble with the law and been issued cautions? Because I fucking stabbed a man with a fork.

"Goddamn it!". Jackson cried out, pounding against his desk with so much force that it shook the floor. Forget Matthew, right now Jackson's biggest enemy was himself, his own anger. Today could have been great. He could have made it great for Adrian - they would have a quiet trip to the café, wander the streets and then relax at home. Adrian was taking me for a nice day out and I fucking destroyed it. Now things are even worse than they were before, and it's Adrian who's doing all of the apologising. He pounded the desk again.

At least there was still the news about Quinx to cheer Adrian up. Even though Jackson inevitably found that his name had been omitted from the list, Adrian was still allowed to go through with the surgery.
He should make a call about that...

Dead Enmity

It had been a long day, and all Adrian had wanted to do was sleep for a little bit. He doubted that Irene was going to be very happy with him, so he decided he'd avoid her for the next few days... He also needed to get into a call to schedule Quinx...would Matthew hold a grudge against him? Because Adrian had had it out now, he wasn't going to hold anything against the other... Whilst he seemed a little mean, there was no point in holding anything against him... It would take up too much time and energy, he could be using that energy to fight ghouls instead. With these thoughts in mind, he fell asleep relatively quickly, just wanting to relax for a little while.

---

The next few days were pretty mellow, for the day after the fight, Adrian was still apologising, but once they got back to work he'd stopped. He didn't need to dwell on it anymore, his head wasn't bothering him, in fact nothing was. He just wanted to get through the days.

He'd called to arrange Quinx surgery on the Tuesday, and he'd gotten in for the Thursday, which was pretty quickly in his opinion. It was something that kept the boy excited, he kept telling people over and over again, even though they already knew. Even Lea started to get a little annoyed that Adrian was repeating the same thing over and over, she kept saying that he had to tell her what it was like, and that they'd have to fight together some time when he was a Quinx because it would be so cool. The only part of Quinx he was slightly concerned about was the new team, he didn't know three of them very well...but at least he knew Irene and Teddy! It should be fun, he just needed to be as good as them.

Whilst Adrian was having surgery, Jackson's parents had stayed to help out with him, so the boy didn't have anything to worry about with Jackson. All he'd had to do was get there on time and get operated on... He wasn't worried about it at all, though he probably should have been at least a tiny bit worried, he'd gone in that morning for the operation, completely ready for this to be a reality. How long the actual operation lasted, he wasn't sure, he didn't know how long he was out either...but...it had probably been awhile.

The boy woke up with quite the start, his eyes shooting open before relaxing into a more tired look when he realised where he was. Hospital? Oh...yeah... Quinx... Adrian brought one of his hands to his eyes groaning slightly. How long had he been out? Hours? Days? Was someone going to inform him? Wait...he'd just had Quinx surgery, right? It'd actually just happened...he was...he was a Quinx now? That was...so...cool... But...all he wanted to do was sleep again, which was strange considering he'd just been asleep for hours...

Suddenly there was a pair of thick-fingered, pale hands between the blue curtains. The hands pulled them apart to allow their owner through to Adrian's bed.

"Aww, you look really cute when you're asleep," said Teddy rather loudly as he invited himself to sit down at the end of Adrian's bed. With an arm, he reached forwards and pinched the boy's cheek, pulling his head from side to side as a grin spread across his face. "Mate, why didn't you tell me you were in here?" the man went on, releasing Adrian's face and then smacking down on his shoulders with a heavy arm. "We could've been roomies, y'know? You an' me!"

Dead Enmity

"Huh?" Adrian sat up upon hearing someone's voice, his head turned to lay eyes on Teddy. So the other male was here too? A large smile spread across the boy's face, even staying there as Teddy pulled on his cheek. "Teddy!" Adrian giggled and simply smiled.

Why...hadn't he told him he was in here... Yeah, why hadn't he? Teddy was a Quinx too, and...then there was the other, but he hadn't seen them yet.
"I...didn't think about it..." He looked up, for a moment, maybe he should have thought about it. "I'm sorry." After that though the smile appeared on his face again, "So...you had surgery?"

"Check it out," Teddy instructed, bringing a hand to his face to pull down on his left lower eyelid. The brown of his iris quickly dissolved into a bright crimson, and the white darkened to a stormy grey that was a few shades lighter than the blackness of a ghoul's eye. Upon releasing his eyelid, the eye returned to its normal colouring.

A cheeky grin still plastered across his face, Teddy shifted up the bed to perch on the edge a little closer to Adrian.
"They didn't tell me what kind of kagune they got me, but I'm thinkin' it's maybe a biaku 'cause my arse is all swollen." He took that moment to inhale through his teeth and rub the top of his backside with the palm of his right hand for emphasis. "Nasty shit, real nasty. Sore. I think the others all had their operations already, too. You gotta be one of the last, right? What kinda kagune'd they give ya? C'mon, spill."

Adrian's eyes went wide in awe, that was so cool! This had really happened, it had all been done...they were actually Quinx now... They could fight just like ghouls would! This was going to be so much fun! And they had be benefits and everything...but...they were still human, which was good. They could still eat normal food.

So, Teddy thought he had a bikaku...but...Adrian didn't really know what they'd given him. He'd never asked, and they'd never told him... He wondered if it was something cool or not...honestly he wanted to know what it looked like right now! If they were going off of what hurt...well...he felt slight discomfort near his shoulder blades...and if he remembered the kagune types correctly, he doubted they would have given him a Koukaku. He wouldn't be able to hold it for long.

"Um...I don't know... My shoulders hurt a little...but...that's it..." He replied, moving his arms just to test that there was more discomfort there than anywhere else. Yeah, it wasn't too painful, but it was something.

"Shoulders?" Teddy reached out and prodded at the bulge between Adrian's shoulders with a thick finger. "Oh yeah, I feel it. That's pretty high up. Ukaku then, right?"

"This some party I wasn't invited to?" called out another voice from elsewhere. Irene. The girl was stood behind the curtain, her silhouette barely visible behind the screen of blue. In a single swift movement, she flung the curtain aside and shot through the gap before it closed again behind her. "Teddy, I can hear you oversharing from the next room."

"Okay, okay! I get it, I'll stop. Anyway... Don't you have places to be or something?"

"Not until they release me at five o'clock."

"Five minutes, what difference does it make?" Teddy tutted, grabbing at the thick watch on his wrist to examine the screen. "It's not like they're gonna set the security guards on you for leaving now. Right, Adrian?"

Irene rolled her eyes to the side and shook her head in despair at Teddy's behaviour.
"Leave Adrian out of this, poor guy must have just woken up."

The boy didn't really react to Teddy poking him, he didn't mind, but yeah...it was probably Ukaku... That sounded fun, it was everything he was built for, he guessed that kagune they got really was tailored to what they were good at.

"Uh." Adrian looked up when he heard a third voice, he recognised it of course, Irene. So she was here too? Were they all here? He didn't say anything at first when the other entered, as she started to converse with Teddy, and he didn't really have anything to say in there conversation. Well, not until Teddy asked him about Irene leaving...

He didn't know what to say, so he just looked between the two, before rubbing his eyes. They could if they wanted to set the security guards on her...but they probably wouldn't, that was probably just a joke from Teddy though.

"It's almost...five?" Adrian asked, avoiding the question completely, he didn't realise that it was that late in the afternoon... How long had he been asleep? Did the two of them find it easy to move around? How long ago had they had their surgery? There were so many questions to ask, but he didn't ask any of them... He hardly even opened his mouth.

Irene nodded.
"Four fifty-six. Oh, and..." Suddenly she ducked forwards, put her pand on Adrian's shoulder and squeezed the skin between her thumb and index finger. Immediately following the act, she lightly rubbed her knuckles into the boy's flesh. "A pinch and a punch for whatever the hell happened at my Gigi's café at the weekend. It's November now, about time you explain what exactly you were trying to achieve in that fight."

Teddy's eyes widened and he bounced excitedly on the thin, soft mattress, causing the bed to wobble and squeak.
"Fight? No way! Adrian, you got in a fight? That's so cool. What happened?"

It was Irene who responded Teddy first, but instead of a clear answer she simply crossed her arms and cocked her head to the side.
"That's what I'd like to know. You know you owe my man for the damages, right?"

Dead Enmity

Adrian started at Irene's hand as she pinched him, he didn't react much apart from a confused expression relating to why she did that... Until she'd started speaking he really didn't understand why he'd been pinched or punched...but...of course, it had something to do with the cafe.

Teddy seemed excited about it, Adrian still just looked innocently up at Irene, almost as if the whole thing had never happened, or it was something much less dangerous and violent as a fight. He'd let the fight slip to the back of his mind, but he knew Irene would bring it up at some point.

"Mn..." The boy turned to look at Teddy, blinking a few times, before looking back at Irene, "He punched Jackson." Adrian replied simply, there was no way he could have just sat there and watched... Although maybe he had gone a bit over the top... He'd taken advantage of Matthew's injured hand, kicked the man in the shins, kicked another guy in the stomach as well as scratched his eyes, and possibly broken a few fingers, and then he'd almost strangled the third guy...and definitely damaged his face back dragging his nails across it. What probably confused most was how someone so small came out rather well off compared to the other men...and all he could say was that if they had worked together...then maybe it wouldn't have been so easy for him to pick them off.

But there was no way he could have let Matthew get away with punching Jackson, the rest was collateral damage... Of course...then he remembered that Irene said she'd been mad at him back then.

"I'm sorry." Adrian looked down and played with the blankets, "I'll...I'll pay it... I promise."

Despite herself, despite the fact that her language was harsh and her eyes had been narrowed to slits, Irene found the edges of her mouth curling upwards in something that could almost be a smile.

"You don't need to," she began, not looking at Adrian. "We're placing the blame on Matthew's lot since he was the first to attack... Almost. We know what happened with the fork, but that fucker needed a good stabbing, so I didn't see that part." As Irene continued to explain her unexpected reasoning with a sly wink, Teddy's head darted back and forth between the two and he kept opening his mouth as if he were about to join in.

"Don't think you're completely off the hook, though. Next ghoul you kill, I get the quinque."

Teddy paused for a moment after Irene's warning, screwing up his face in the way that people do when they're trying to remember something important. With a hand he scratched at the side of his own face and then opened his mouth to speak again.
"So, uh, anyway. Hey, Adrian! Have you figured out how to make your eye go all ghoulie yet? Irene's gets really dark, she almost looks like one of those one-eyed jobs."

Dead Enmity

Really? She was letting him off like that? And...placing the blame on Matthew's group... Adrian couldn't help but smile at that, so maybe she wasn't as mad at him as she thought he was... That was good, he was glad. He didn't really have all much money at the moment, and whilst he would have paid it, it would have cost both him and Jackson... It was nice of her to let him off like that, he really didn't mean to trash the place...it wasn't his goal.

"Thanks." The boy smiled, looking back up at Irene just as she started telling him her terms. He could do that, he could give her the quinque of the next ghoul he killed. "Okay! Yeah! You can have it!" No matter who it was, he needed to give her the quinque, even if it was really cool. He'd keep up the deal, he did owe her after all.

His attention was quickly taken away from the subject as Teddy started asking him if he'd figured out how to make his eye go that strange colour... Well...no...because he'd just woken up. In response Adrian shook his head,
"No." He replied, looking over to Irene as her eye was mentioned, "How...how do you guys do it?" He was getting excited again, this was going to be so much fun! They were all going to have a great time!

"Hoo boy, here we go," Irene muttered as Teddy inched closer and closer to Adrian.

"Seriously? C'mon, bruv, it's easy! And... Impossible to explain but, wait, hear me out 'cause I know what I'm doing." Once more, Teddy widened his eye and stared at Adrian as it darkened to red and grey. "See that? It's like, you don't even think about it. Just... It's like you get a new muscle at the back of your eye and then you twitch it and poof! It's easy, right? Irene, go on, show 'em, show Adrian how to do it."

"You could be a little more polite about it," the girl said, but when she opened her eyes again after blinking, one was the same grey-and-red combination as Teddy's. "Besides, it's not that easy. The kakugan might not have properly developed yet, and Adrian could have trouble controlling it. Gee, you should've seen Matt when he first woke up. Guy's eye was flashing morse code for at least an hour."

Dead Enmity

Adrian has stared intently at Teddy as he changed his eye colour again, but...he said he couldn't explain it. If he couldn't explain it, then how was Adrian meant to do it? Could they just do it like that? Did it just...happen? They could definitely control it, so...there was that. There must be some way for him to do what they were doing... Teddy said it was like there was another muscle, so if he just thought about doing something that wasn't blinking or moving his eyes, then...maybe he'd be able to do it...

Without him really having to think much, Adrian's right eye started to change. His iris changed to a crimson colour, whilst the outside changed to a rather dark grey, from a distance it probably wouldn't be obvious that it was even grey, instead looking black. Of course, his eyes only stayed like that for a few seconds, since the next time he blinked, it had changed back again...

"Oh." That was...strange. He could feel it changing, he knew when it wasn't its natural colour, but he couldn't explain how he did it... They were right... It wasn't explainable... After a second of realising what had happened, Adrian's lips curled upwards into a smile and he giggled. "That's so cool!" He exclaimed, hands slamming down onto the bed and making it squeak, whilst he looked rapidly between Teddy and Irene. "Did you see that?!"

Teddy whooped and yipped and smacked Adrian's shoulder with his forearm.
"Oh man! You got it first try, how cool's that? Oh! Oh, oh, you know what this means, right? We can pretend to be ghouls and trick them all into coming straight into our arms."

Just as Irene began to count on her fingers all the ways in which Teddy's plan could fail, a short, portly lady clad in a blue cotton jacket pushed through the curtains, calling out,
"Mister Sanister, Mister Sanister - oh!" The nurse blinked wildly at the sight of Irene and Teddy, the latter of whom quickly then pushed himself off the bed to stand straight and look natural.

"Hey, Thesese," Irene said, waving at the nurse with a smile on her face.

"Oh, Miss Garcia, and Mister - err - Layton, was it? You've been discharged, you know."

"Yeah, we know. Just thought we'd pay Adrian a visit before his check-up. After all, we're squad-mates now..."

"Oh, yes, yes!" Thesese interrupted, clapping her hands together and directing her beaming gaze towards Adrian. "Dearie, I was just coming along to check that everything's all in working order, that we didn't leave any sponges in your ribcage or anything silly."

Tugging at Teddy's sleeve to urge him away with her, Irene nodded.
"Oh, sure, we'll leave, then. Have fun, you two." With that last word, Irene and Teddy had left Adrian alone with Therese the nurse.

"Are you all right, dear? How are you feeling?" the lady chirped, glancing up and down the length of Adrian's body.

Dead Enmity

Teddy's plan to trick ghouls into thinking that they were the same and luring them into a trap was definitely flawed, but...even knowing that they'd most likely get caught, Adrian was up for it. So in reply he nodded excitedly. That was the thing with him, he was up for anything that seemed fun, dangerous or not.

There was another voice that could be heard coming towards the three of them, and calling Adrian's name. When the woman appeared he didn't recognise her, but the other two seemed to. She looked like she was a nurse, so...was she here to check on him? Because he was okay, honestly he was just excited to be out of the hospital. He hoped that he could leave soon, that she'd say everything was alright and he could go...

The other two had been discharged, and it seemed like they were leaving now... So Adrian waved them off, before his attention turned back to the nurse in front of him.

"I'm okay." He replied, smiling, "And I feel fine." He was still a little bit tired, but apart from that he felt absolutely fine. Was Jackson alright with his parents? Yeah...probably... It had been nice of Teddy and Irene to visit him, he wondered when they'd all meet up for the first time, with the others too. He still had one person to meet...that girl...whose name he...couldn't quite remember.

"Oh, good, good, that's always lovely to hear. Now - if you could just sit up a bit more, I've got to run a few tests. Oh! Before I forget - here." Therese bent down to reach beneath the bed with her short, plump arm, fumbled around in the darkness for a few seconds and then drew out a woven tote bag which was bulging at the bottom.

"Another young man left this here for you quite early in the morning, about when you were in the theatre, I think. Said he was a friend of yours. Is this..?" She pulled the sides of the bag open and dipped her nose in to take a look, then passed it over to Adrian. Inside were a number of the boy's belongings - his phone, a change of clothes, a hair comb and a couple of thick, heavy novels from Jackson's bookshelf. "Oh yes, look, it's all of your things from home. That's perfect! You're going to be quite bored for the next couple of hours whilst I take some measurements and the like."

Dead Enmity

When asked, Adrian sat up straighter, before watching as the woman produced a bag from under the bed. At first he wondered what it could possibly be, she said someone dropped it off for him this morning...so...he assumed that was Jackson, right? There wasn't really any other young man who would drop off something for him, not that he could imagine anyway.

"Yay!" The boy exclaimed taking his stuff and rifling through the bag to get his phone out. Sure, he didn't want to be here for the next few hours, but he could deal with it if he had his phone. It was something to do, he could just watch videos or go on the internet, or play games. There would be something to do...hopefully the time would pass quickly... He wanted to be discharged like Teddy and Irene... They were already going home...he wanted to go home too...

Therese busied herself by darting in and out of the curtains, fetching medical equipment, placing it on the bedside chair, muttering things to herself and then disappearing elsewhere to fetch other tools. Her light, clicking footsteps echoed off the clean white walls within the room.

As Adrian's phone flickered into life in response to its owner's touch, the screen flashed with the icon to signify that there were unread text messages from Adrian's contacts. Several texts had been sent to the phone at various times throughout the day. All of the messages were from Jackson:

07:59

Have a nice nap, bud

12:12

Attached to the second message was a photograph of Adrian unconscious in the hospital bed, a breathing mask wrapped around his face and a drip hooked up to his hand. In the corner of the frame was Jackson's hand positioned with the middle finger pointing upwards.

12:14

"All right there, dear? Just - ooh, let me grab your arm for a minute..." Therese was suddenly at Adrian's side with a black nylon arm cuff. With one hand she lifted Adrian's left arm and fitted the cuff around it, fastening it with the attached strips of Velcro. "I'm just going to take your blood pressure, let me know if the cuff gets too tight."

Adrian was too engrossed in his phone to realise that anything was going on around him, he didn't like being without it, as it gave him something to do when no one else was around. As it turned on he noticed that someone had been sending him messages. They...were all from today.

Looking through the messages, Adrian's lips turned up into a smile and he started to giggle, no he wasn't in a coma... Silly Jackson... He wished he'd been awake for when Jackson came to visit him...then he probably would have gotten discharged earlier as well... What a shame...

He decided he'd text the other back, but just as he was about to he felt the nurse grab his arm. The boy looked over to her, confused about what she was going at first, but she said she was just taking his blood pressure. He was too busy to care about what she did, so he just nodded and then looked back to his phone, texting Jackson with one hand.

17:02

Almost immediately after the screen confirmed the message's delivery, a small animated icon of a speech bubble popped up in the lower left corner to indicate that Jackson was busy typing.

Therese clicked the monitor on as Jackson continued to type, and the arm cuff tightened around Adrian's muscle. A few seconds passed, the machine beeped four times and Therese removed the cuff from Adrian's arm.

"Blood pressure is looking fantastic, darling," the nurse beamed, almost bouncing on the spot as she gazed at Adrian from the side. "I'll be back in a tick, just going to get some syringes. Make yourself busy!" she suggested, then skipped out of the curtain-enclosed space and into the wider ward.

Finally, the speech bubble icon disappeared and blinked into the next message.

17:05

finally! Jesus, I know you like a lie in but that was crazy. the day went so long without you, i swear, Minnie and I spent all afternoon updating the ghoul ratings after i was allowed back to work. haven't seen teddy & co either, so i guess you all had a squad union at the hospital. how was the surgery? did they remove your bladder by accident?

Dead Enmity

"Mhm!" Adrian replied to the woman's voice, but he wasn't really paying attention, just staring at the small speech bubble in the corner of his screen, waiting for Jackson to type back... Goddammit...how long did he want to take? Was he writing an essay or some shit?

Once Therese had left the room a message finally poppued up in the space of the speech bubble. So...they'd been updating the ghoul ratings? That was interesting...he wondered if Jester's had been updated. He hadn't seen Teddy and all of them because most of them had only gotten discharged minutes ago...

17:06

Did you see Jester's rating in there?

Also, I just saw Teddy and Irene...they've been here too, they just got discharged...but...apparently I'm gonna be here awhile.

And I think it was fine. My eye goes a weird colour now, it's really cool! I...um...I should ask them about that though... I don't think they did...

He looked down, wondering if they really had removed something they weren't supposed to. Probably not...he'd probably be dead if they had...

Therese returned at the same time as the speech bubble icon. She was carrying a plastic blue tray with three empty test tubes and several needles clattering about as she moved.

Anyway, you don't have a needle phobia, do you? I've got to take some blood from you so that we can all have a look at what your red child cells are doing."

Adrian still wasn't paying attention, he heard 'fear' in a question and so he shook his head, still looking at his phone. He didn't know what she was doing...but he probably wasn't afraid of it...he'd be fine. She was only doing tests or something anyway, he probably wouldn't notice it.

17:12

it's okay. I'll get the bus or something if I'm that bad. I'll be fine.

And yeah, a couple of hours I think. So...I'll see you around 7 or 8?

---

The hours passed slower than Adrian would have liked, but that was okay. They'd done a bunch of tests on him whilst he'd been talking to Jackson, but he didn't really recall half of them, even the ones he'd been somewhat paying attention it. If he hadn't had his phone then he probably would have been bored out of him mind in there. There was nothing to do but watch the wall unless you had something with you.

The minute the tests were over Adrian had gotten changed and grabbed his stuff, heading out of the hospital. He had been so relieved to be discharged. Tomorrow would be his first day with his new squad! He honestly wondered what they'd be doing... Though...he was still super apprehensive about leaving Jackson... He didn't really want to be without the other... Not like he had a choice anymore.

Since he'd been fine, he'd taken his car back and parked it in their usual parking spot. Once that was done Adrian had practically ran to the elevator, he couldn't wait to get in... His arm was sore, and so were his shoulders...he wanted to lay down for a little bit. The elevator seemed to take forever to him, he'd gotten in once it had arrived, pressed '9' and headed up. That seemed to take forever as well. The second the door opened it was a sprint to his apartment, a large smile on his face.

knock, knock, knock!

So...maybe he'd forgotten his keys...yeah...yeah he had... He didn't mean to...but...Adrian had had to knock on his own door instead. He hoped no one was sleeping...but...it wasn't that late.

For several long seconds, the door remained still and closed, the only sign that there was anyone in at all being the muffled voices that shot back and forth behind the wall. Eventually, the handle clicked down and the door cracked open, but the face peering out was not Jackson's. It was that of an older lady, a woman with frosty silver locks of hair that curled in the same way that Jackson's did when it got wet. She had the almond-shaped brown eyes and softly carved nose that were familiar to Adrian, but her most distinguishing feature was the huge, thick, white band of scarred skin that ran from the corner of her mouth all the way around to the opposite side of her face.

"Adrian!" Jackson's mother, Tilly, cried out, pushing the door further open to allow the boy inside. There was a huge grin on her face as she seized Adrian to greet him with a cheek-kiss to either side of the face. When she finally stood back again, her hands still on the boy's shoulders, she spent a moment gazing happily into his eyes before speaking again. "Oh, it feels like it's been so long since we last saw you. I'm ever so sorry we couldn't be here for the morning, but - well - we're all together now! How are you doing, love?"

"Well, look who it is," said a deeper voice as an exceptionally tall man ambled around from the kitchen. "Surgery all done, then? Good lad. Feels a bit strange to say it to someone who's not my boy, but I'm proud of you, child." Jackson's father, known to Adrian as Eric, towered over Adrian with his hands in the pockets of his trousers. Though his hair was also grey and his eyes were a striking green, much of his face was identical to Jackson's.

Suddenly, Tilly stepped backwards to let Adrian further into the apartment. Jackson was waiting there, his phone in his lap, and he greeted his roommate with a smirk and a salute.
We've been talking all day, I'll let him take my parents for a few minutes... Or hours. Knowing his mother and father, Adrian wouldn't be freed from conversation for the rest of the day. They were just like that - talkative, excitable - sometimes it seemed as though they forgot Adrian wasn't part of the family. They certainly treated him like their son on the rare occasions that they met the boy.
