do these mercenaries seem better than normal levies? I essentially seem to be paying for early levies, due to how they're described as 'poor townlings' and 'meagre farmholders'

hmm... if they are collected at the end of the season then you'd want to wait another 40 days (7 turns) or so to collect to get the full amount

I just reread your reply and realized that I totally misinterpreted the situation. All or most of the enemy Nobles have abandoned the countryside and retreated to their fastness. This wasn't the plan but the situation is still salvageable I should think. Time to ravage the unprotected countryside while my foot levy begins to muster.

the regular "knight" is supposed to represent unnamed household/country knights, while "landed knights" are the named guys who are usually Master of X
