I think I'm making a Rogue, someone who was sold into slavery and forced to work jobs in the flying city of dreams and sin, Cloudheight. Managing to escape in foreign lands he wound up plying his trade on the road. Settling in Swallguud thanks to finding worthy allies, perhaps even friends.
The Artificer would have been a gnome or dwarf who relies on handguns and grenades whilst making gadgets an tools for the party as the story progressed. A hoverboard being his most accomplished invention.
