[div class=contentcontainer][div class=tabcontent1] Official Title: King of the Kingdom of Beleth and Commander of the Army of Beleth
Reign: Approaching 3 years and counting
Issue: None
Betrothed: Queen Rue Thallea of Theren
Age: 23
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Straight
Height: 6' 2''
Weight: 204lbs
Nicknames: Called the Homely King by friends for his love of cooking

[/div] [div class=tabcontent2 style=display:none]A more subdued man than his father ever was, Guo Zhi values peace more than many feel comfortable with. He is not a man prone to angry outbursts or tirades, making the adjustment from a man willing to fly off the handle at any given moment to a man with a stoic face and even temper both alarming and a relief. Many of the servants that had chafed under the abuse of the former king pledged immediate allegiance to the far kinder son and he has been garnering the favor of almost every soul that passes through the castle these days with his calming voice and patient gaze.

Guo Zhi is well aware of the enormous weight he now carries on his shoulders as king of Beleth. He contemplates to himself the weight of his actions for hours at a time, the night being his one constant adviser, her stillness a listening ear for his worries. He appreciates the nights more than the days, when the world is quiet and asleep and he has no one but the bright phoenix to tend to.

Even though he is kind-hearted, years under his father have made him hard, too. He is wary to trust others and suspicious of every adviser that turns a corner. He trusts few and speaks only to his brother, Jia Yu, about his own personal concerns. The true remain ever close as a result, watching over their youngest brother, Qiang, with a steely eye and a heavy hand on their swords.

By all accounts a fierce warrior, Guo Zhi is not one to be swayed in matters important to him. He had seen men grovel at his father's feet and had seen empires crumble before his eyes. He would turn to those men, begging for scraps and he would not watch his beloved home turn to ash.

Likes: His brothers, duck, his phoenix, the loyalty of his ranks, the smell of sea spray on the open ocean, the wind rushing through his hair, cooking for his family, wandering the gardens at dusk
Dislikes: His father, the bastards that rose to power under his father, burnt grains, men who have no heart for the women among them, crying children, the thought of dying alone
[/div] [div class=tabcontent3 style=display:none]Before Guo Zhi was crowned, the kingdom of Beleth chafed under the rule of Jian Ju, Guo Zhi's father, and Ding Xiang, his grandfather. Both men were angry and harsh, beating the country for blood and fame and turning the sea red with anger and spilled blood. It was under Ding Xiang that Beleth aggressively expanded along the coastline, absorbing kingdom after kingdom. The man took a wife from one of these defeated lands and she gave him a daughter and a son before dying from a fever after giving birth to their third child, stillborn. From here, Ding Xiang only grew harsher, believing his wife weak and instilling in his children the belief that only the strong survived. He encouraged Jian Ju to channel his already fierce anger into action.

It was to be his first and last mistake.

Jian Ju was assigned to lead the navy but he was unsatisfied. Even with the Wise Queen Ying's suggestions, the family was never quite one. After all, the Wise Queen would have told Ding Xiang to instill true wisdom through kindness in his children before feeding them hate.

Jian Ju did not overthrow his father. Jian Ju did not kill his father. The hatred that had been fed to him simply overflowed and the prince raged day and night, instilling fear in the old king. When his daughter died in battle before she turned seventeen and it became clear that Jian Ju would hold the crown, Ding Xiang threw himself off the harbor and drifted away in the ocean. It took the navy two days to fish out his body to give him a proper burial. It is said that he left behind a note to his advisers, begging them for forgiveness for the monster that he had created.

The poor woman who became his wife was in no better condition. A member of a noble family from Beleth who had hoped to rise in the ranks, she had a personal guard stationed outside her own door almost every night. The guards were often dismissed as soon as possible.

Guo Zhi's birth was a relief. He was healthy. He would live. He would be king. And for his mother, it meant her duty had been fulfilled.

Of course, a man like Jian Ju did not believe so. He constantly pressured his wife for another heir and when she rebuffed him each time, he looked for them elsewhere, siring many bastards. The concept of legitimizing them rested heavily on his mind and he did pay for a few of them to be educated in the institutions that once had been a hallmark of Beleth. Realizing that his infidelity could cause a scramble for the throne, he quickly shut down many of the institutions, closing the great library to ensure that only his children, legitimate and not, could be seen there without causing much fuss from the public. It was there that he got to know each and every one of them, instilling within them his hatred. For most, however, this hatred had twisted itself to fear.

Finally, Guo Zhi's brothers were born. The kingdom rejoiced. Jian Ju sulked. There was no reason for his bastards anymore. He had three healthy sons who were growing under the careful watch of a thousand tutors. He had no excuse for his nightly romps anymore and if it truly caught on that he had sired as many as he had, a thousand families would rise against him, demanding penance for soiling their daughters or claiming that he too had sired their own bastards.

They say he killed at least half of them under the cover of night.

Guo Zhi did not believe it. His father, though a cruel, abusive man with a tightly wound fist and a sharp tongue, would not kill children. Until the children he had gone to his private tutoring sessions began to dwindle. And he believed it.

Jian Ju's heavy hand fell upon Guo Zhi more and more, a combination of fury that he could no longer seek pleasure whenever he liked and his general anger making Guo Zhi a good target. The boy trained hard in the barracks, often cared for by the generals there and lovingly tended to by nurses and servants within the castle as his father gave him no attention outside of the anger he had always clung to.

Then, his mother died.

Guo Zhi wept, even when his father shouted at him for being weak to do so. His mother had been gentle, chafing as well under Jian Ju. She had finally died of a fever as well, taken away from the cruelty that was their father.

When he died, vanquished by either an angry noble that had realized what the man had done or taken by the gods themselves, Guo Zhi breathed easy for the first time in his life. The entire kingdom awoke one day to see the doors of the library once more open and to see a new king sitting atop a throne. Glory had returned to Beleth and the wish that the king live long became true once again.

But Guo Zhi knew that the court that had been poisoned with his father's anger would never truly wash away, not so quickly as he would have liked. He worked hard and tirelessly to cleanse it of the evil man's influence.

His first major decision that his father would never take: to marry instead of war.

And the whole kingdom is holding its breath to see how such a thing will turn out.

Issue: None
Betrothed: Princess Li Hui Hua of Zhi Ren
Age: 16
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Bisexual

Nicknames: Many girls eager to fawn over him call him the Flower Prince for his like of planting flowers

[/div] [div class=tabcontent2 style=display:none]Somehow more subdued than Guo Zhi, Jia Yu struggles to express himself. He has tasked himself with being his elder brother's secret keeper and his youngest brother's protector and both responsibilities weigh heavily on his shoulders, burdens he chooses to carry. The weight of others' problems helps mask his own deep-seated issues and ensure that he keeps his own secrets buried deep under others.

Still a boy by all accounts, Jia Yu has never really known comfort outside of the brief moments of happiness he had with his mother, out in the garden where his father never ventured. He was closer to her and loved her very much, finding warmth in the songs she sang to him and his brothers to lull them to sleep and the way she smiled at him, always happy no matter how much her father tried to break her. Her death shook Jia Yu exceptionally hard and he retreated into himself, frightened for the first time in his life.

He rebels still against everything Jian Ju stands for. The man insisted on formalities so Jia Yu refuses them. The man wanted sweets to be fed to him at all hours so Jia Yu rejects. The man demanded the servants never look him in the eye or befriend his children, so Jia Yu befriended them anyways. The only place where the two intersect is in work; both take some sort of euphoric pleasure in the thrill of the battle and the taste of victory. Only Jia Yu fears this.

While it may at first seem like he has closed himself off forever, Jia Yu is attempting to branch out more. He has befriended many of his naval officers and still speaks to many of his former tutors. He walks alongside the servants of the kingdom and will help the older ones if necessary. He watches the commonfolk pass by him and waves to those he recognizes and receives a smile that warms him in return.

Since his betrothal, Jia Yu has been different. There is hope in him now that he will be able to usher in a new era of peace within the kingdom, alongside his brother. Perhaps his future wife will be kind to him and sing to their children, like his mother had once done for him. Perhaps she will like the flowers that he planted in the garden for them to stroll through, tended to lovingly by his own hand. Perhaps he will find true joy one day. Perhaps.

Likes: The smell of blossoming flowers, spring rain, the way fire dances, the taste of salted meats, his brother's cooking, his mother, walking along the pier and watching people work, his friends, the feel of his summer clothes against his skin
Dislikes: His father's memory, cruelty towards any creature of the earth be it animal or plant, the squeal of pigs when they are butchered, propriety, overly soft beds, seasick passengers, slave traders
[/div] [div class=tabcontent3 style=display:none]Jia Yu's birth was praised throughout the kingdom by all but the king. He meant that there would be someone to take over the navy, which, at the time, was being controlled by a distant cousin, conjured up by the miracle of the promise of victory. While the woman was cross, it had long been known to her that there was no way that any of her children would inherit the title should the queen birth more children. Even with her own ambitions dashed, the woman who had once been captain would take Jia Yu under her wing anyways, providing him with a home away from home and kindness when his father would not.

When his younger brother was born, Jia Yu was happy. He did not fully understand what it meant to be an older brother, but he held his little brother anyways and watched Guo Zhi do the same, peering at the small face that blinked back at him. He thought it curious how small his brother was, how delicate he seemed.

Of course, his father was not present.

Jia Yu was never terribly concerned when Jian Ju was not there.

Throughout his life, Jian Ju would treat all his sons the same; feeding them cruelty and watching in disgust as they retched fear instead. Jia Yu came the closest to being like his father, the thrill of battle when he practiced against other teens at the mere age of ten coursing through his veins, a grin plastered on his face. It was the only time his father indicated any sort of affection towards the boy and it horrified Jia Yu.

He would not be like his father. He would not.

When Jia Yu's beloved mother died, he did not cry. He could not summon the energy to weep for her, for what could tears compare to the life that she no longer lived? What could tears do to heal the wound that had now stretched across his chest, the wound that had been left by her absence?

When his bastard of a father died, he did weep. In joyous celebration with much of the commonfolk over their newfound freedom, Jia Yu whooped among them, running through the streets screaming the news that the demon was dead, that the terrible monster that had tried to wring them of blood was finally gone from the earth, the gods having finally heard their prayers. He danced with merchants and shiphands, sang songs and drank deeply with the shopkeepers and soldiers that had suffered with him until someone finally hauled him home.

From there, Jia Yu shut down, surprisingly. The truth of being heir at the mere age of twelve weighed on him and his training to be commander of the navy soon began, alongside lessons on the intricacies of war, of the sea, and of nations far away. he was no longer a little boy to the world. He was prince and he was heir and he was to protect everyone from the cruelty that his father had been. He was to ensure that no one would be harmed again.

He led his first charge into battle when he was fifteen, racing across the sands with sword in hand to fight back invaders. Blood clung to his eyelashes and yet he felt he could still see, could still swing his sword and watch himself hack limb from limb, watch men collapse in pools of red, watch women gasp for air. It did not frighten him as much as he thought it should.

From there, Jia Yu established himself as a master of his craft. He went out to sea daily, alongside the former naval commander, the two of them working together to bring those who attack merchant ships to justice. He worked swiftly and decisively, handing down actions without a second thought.

His betrothal to Li Hui Hua came, as a result, of no surprise to the rest of the kingdom but all of it to Jia Yu. He was a fierce warrior and the kingdom did not want a fight with him and so presented their princess to him as a sign of peace.

The two have since exchanged letters to one another, speaking of their experiences from day to day. Jia Yu often fumbles with his quill when writing to her, uncertain about how to speak of all his fears and hopes for their union. She, in turn, sends him letters full of descriptions of her own colorful life. The two are uncertain when they will wed, but with his older brother's own betrothal, he is certain it will be delayed until Guo Zhi is wed. He does not mind.

Lord Chancellor

Sebastian Cromwell
the snake in the grass the lord of crows the shadow of the crown; you may scale the mountain all the way to the top but all you will find there is air.
Synopsis
Ambitious, cunning, ruthless, just a few of the words used to describe the Lord Chancellor Cromwell. He is young at 27 and impressive for his earned rank, especially since he was born so low and had to climb so high, scaling the mountain itself as it is said of him. But however high he has risen, Lord Cromwell’s last name gives him away, it is unmistakably of common origin. It derives from the new tongue, which names like Rivers, Lochstein and Whitehall alike come from, new names, not old. And there is nothing the Theren nobles value more than the age of something, the longer the lineage can be traced back the more valuable and noble. To have a new name and a poor account of family history makes you low and unworthy, and given Cromwell’s orphan status his line starts with him and him alone. This fact which he has no control over has made him enemies in the court and any friends he has made despite it were hard earned.

Sebastian is and educated man who attended a University outside of Theren by the patronage of a wealthy man he saved back in his days as a footsoldier. He often thinks back to that moment as his defining one, he never did anything so lucky and brave as save that man. It made all his fortunes. Once educated he returned to Theren and took the court by storm. From his quiet days as a clerk all the way unto his station and current title. Thus far he has made himself indispensable to the crown, and has worked hard to maintain his station, often working well into the night. It is not at all well known that Cromwell is a skilled blademaster and soldier that could put most to shame in tournaments or duels if he so chose. Most assume him to be singularly a scholar given that he was from a university. He prefers to keep it that way, and to keep some of his skills under wraps, to save away for a moment when the element of surprise makes all the difference. In truth much of his character is like that, mysterious and secretive, intriguing.

He had the favor of the King for his competence and work ethic, and now the Queen for the advice he gives and experience he offers. He knows a chance when he sees it, and didn't take issue with using the fledgling Queen's fragile state of grief and fear to both become closer to her and convince her to accept certain policies and treaties. This includes the treaty with Beleth. And while all of this is ambitious and more than a little manipulative, Sebastion should not be mistaken for a selfish traitor. People doubt his intentions, but he always makes them clear, he is a loyalist through and through. He is devoted to his role and thrives in it, he genuinely loves his country and wishes to see it prosper. He just believes that his ideas are what's best for it, meanwhile having ambitions of his own. Just because he loves his country does not mean he does not wish for himself to rise, to prove every noble who ever scoffed at him dead wrong and to make them all beholden to him. The two desires are rarely mutually exclusive.

Cromwell has a network of informants and spies that reach farther than some would care to know, and as such can keep the crown better informed. Normally his job would keep him in Theren, but he is traveling to Beleth to accompany the Queen while she is situated in her new home. He is to offer advice and help her sort out affairs between Beleth and Theren. But he may have a few agendas of his own while there.

Age: 27
Height: 6'
FC: Louis Garrel
Nicknames: he has many names at court, most of them unkindly describing him as sly, but the Queen fondly calls him her 'Lord Blackbird' which is a great deal softer a name while still recognizing who he is as a shadowy dark figure. it's caught on somewhat, especially with the Queen's ladies. a thing which he refuses to admit to anyone, especially himself, that it warms his cold hard heart.

Lady In Waiting

Eerie Gaspard
misplaced lady of will and determination; your ideals are too grand for stuffy tradition and must pave your way anew in another country!
Synopsis

The Lady Eerie was chosen for the honor of being Lady to the Princess as a girl and had she not had her station before she matured into who she is today she would never have been chosen for it now. Though her Queen loves her as her friend the lady has taken every opportunity to act in a scandalous manner, willful and daring to her core. She won't be held by traditions much too old for her more modern ideals and has refused suitor after suitor presented to her by her parents. Only her relation with the Queen allows her to act out in this way and she abuses it as much as she can. Lady Eerie jumped at the chance to be rid of Theren and travel with her Queen to Beleth, where she hears women have more options. Especially in terms of lovers, as Lady Eerie much prefers the comfort of women to that of men.

Age: 22
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Heterosexual

[/div] [div class=tabcontent2 style=display:none]Many see the flicker of the old king in Jun Du's eyes. He is, by leaps and bounds, the only child who has truly garnered the king's rage and thirst for blood in its purest form. While Jia Yu attempts to reject his father's memory, Jun Du uses it to fuel his rage and fire. He has nothing, of course, nothing but royal blood and the mockery of an interference that will not even sway the poorest noble to consider marrying his daughter to him.

His rage has flourished in the years since he was formally brought to court, crowned count of the land that his mother stands on. He has watched his father interact with his true sons and sneered at them, thinking them weak and soft. He knows true rage and true fury, he knows the taste of bitter vengeance and he knows what true cruelty looks like. Jun Du latches onto his anger and it has burned away any other characteristic that may truly lie within, leaving a scheming, calculating man in its wake.

On the outside, he appears similar to the current king. Subdued. Restrained. Quiet. But call him a bastard, ask him of his father, and fire flickers in his dark eyes and his lips purse as he reigns in the fury that springs from those questions.

He has molded himself to be a patient man. But fire must be fed more fuel eventually, and he is ready to burn the throne if it means he is king of the ashes.

Likes: The quietness and stillness of libraries, the smell of books, gentle breezes rustling through meadows, the power that knowledge gives him
Dislikes: His half-brothers, the glint of light off of a sword as it is being swung down, the taste of meat that is anything less than well cooked, the smell of fish, the glares of the other nobles, the long and arduous wait
[/div] [div class=tabcontent3 style=display:none]Jun Du was one of the first bastards sired by Jian Ju, conceived less than a year after his brother and true heir was born. As such, Jun Du was given more time with his monster of a father, learning his rage and his hatred and spitting it back to him.

Jian Ju was proud of this and from a young age modeled the boy to follow in his footsteps, feeding his fury like his father had fed his. He stroked the young boy's hunger for power by promising that because he was Jian Ju's son, the throne belonged to him in some small part. Jun Du began dreaming about the day that he would slay his half-brother, or perhaps convince him to kneel to him and claim the throne for his own. Jun Du's mother was horrified at this and intervened, taking Jun Du away and educating him within the county that her family claimed. Jun Du was infuriated by this; he was being groomed to be prince, after all, and his mother had just ripped his birthright from his hands.

Jun Du stayed away until his second prominent and true heir of a half-brother, Jia Yu was born. He was incited. This was his mother's fault, that bitch. He no longer had claim to the throne, forever behind the true born sons.

It is not know what he did to escape the county but he did, arriving at the palace and sneaking in, lying in wait for the king. Jian Ju was only amused at his bastard son's attempt to interrogate him and amused the boy, allowing him to sit among his other bastards who had remained at court and to learn.

The birth of Qiang further pushed Jun Du back and he burned even brighter with rage.

Then, Jian Ju did the most horrific action that even Jun Du could barely stomach.

He took Jun Du and a few other bastards out into a field one day and told them that he had done all he could to make them strong and that only a few of them had taken his lessons truly to heart. When Jian Ju drew his sword, only Jun Du stood up and defied him, accusing him of sabotaging his claim to the throne with the birth of his two true sons.

To this day, Jun Du remembers the way the man laughed and the way his half-siblings screamed for mercy as he cut off their heads.

To this day, he cannot raise a sword.

He studied harder each and every day as it appeared he would not be legitimized, even though he had taken the anger and spirit of his father and spat it back out at him. Jian Ju knew that to legitimize Jun Du and push back his other two sons would spell trouble and a potential civil war, as his actions, while quiet, sped around the court anyways, inciting many of the families whose children he had taken. Jun Du advised his father to silently remove these nobles and replace them with weaker willed ones, ones who feared his sword. His father snorted but did so and found very little resistance from then on to commit his atrocities.

And so Jun Du had his father's ear.

He poisoned the court slowly, filling it up with sycophants and cowards, with spies that he knew would obey him and not the royal family, held onto by the chain of gold. He has waited for a war to send his true brothers off to, to ensure that they died far away and that Jian Ju would have no choice but to name him prince, but the man died too early. And the kingdom rejoiced far too much.

So he waits.

And waits.

And the fire burns.

[/div] [div class=tabcontent2 style=display:none]A woman who doesn't take any shit from anyone, Jody has survived battles, a domineering mother, and two vile kings. She has ensured that her children would survive them too. And she has many children.

Taking in any and all who are orphans, either by parental abandonment or negligence, Jody has made herself known to be one of the kindest women in the navy, as well as one of its most deadly. She has a soft spot for outsiders and for those who chafe under the rough expectation of who they were born as. And while this soft spot has aided her in making many a great man or woman even greater, it has always garnered her an enemy or two, an angry father or an angry mother who has noticed their child's loyalty turning away from them and towards the captain of the sea.

But none dare cross her.

She was chosen as captain for her brutality as much as her ability to inspire honor and loyalty within those she commands. She knows the waves and they know her and the trust that even the brutal king put in her was unparalleled elsewhere. A woman not to be trifled with, Jody is, at the moment, a woman free of expectations, for she has proven herself time and time again to be fiercer than any man could ever be.

Likes: The rocking of the boats, the sound of waves crashing, the red clouds over a setting sun, her children, her loyal and steadfast crew mates, the current king and his brothers, the taste of fresh oysters hauled in by fisherman, her ex-husband
Dislikes: The old, brutal kings; her mother, foods that have been overly flavored, cowards, the rain
[/div] [div class=tabcontent3 style=display:none]Jody's life began as any other woman's did when they were born to poor dockworkers. She worked the docks alongside her mother and father and her brothers, two elder and two younger. The only daughter of the family, her mother expected her to marry some wealthy man and escape from the docks, living a much more glamorous life that she had once dreamed of. But that was her mother's dream, not hers. Jody dreamed of the ocean, dreamed of the wide open sea. She dreamed of standing on the decks of the massive ships of the Beleth navy, staring out at the blue water before her and commanding a thousand men and women forward. She imagined firing the cannons out into the wood of rival ships, imagined the glory of battle.

For Jody's mother, these visions of glory and fighting were for boys and boys alone. Her mother had been raised on more traditional ideals than those that Beleth had grown to appreciate and tried to enforce them into all her children. To her shock, her eldest son ran off with another man to a foreign country to become a dyer and her next eldest married a farmhand on the other side of the nation, content to sit at home and raise the children the two sired together.

Jody, encouraged by her sibling's acts of rebellion, jumped at the chance to join the navy, proving herself a skilled warrior and crew-hand. Years working on the docks had taught her much about how ships docked and sailed and watching the navy head out to sea every night meant she knew the angle of the stars that spun overhead as well as anyone else.

Of course, her mother would not relent so easily. She was found a suitable husband and forced to marry him. The two hardly touched and produced heirs as soon as possible, dissolving the marriage soon after, both knowing that the love was not genuine. While her mother fumed, Jody had done her duty and she and her husband raised their three children together, alongside whatever partner they chose for the time being.

Jody was chosen to command the navy soon after the birth of her last child, her prowess in battle and her knowledge of the sea making her a wise choice. Even the brute of a king thought so. And so she took up the mantle, relentlessly chasing after those who dared defy her and her position simply because of what she looked like and who she was.

After Prince Jia Yu was born, Jody knew her days of commanding were numbered and felt bitter. She was the commander of an impressive fleet, brought to greater heights by her wit and yet she would be brushed aside for a man due to his birth.

Still, it was not the fault of the child and Jody took it upon herself to educate him of the ocean, taking him away from the brutal hand of his father and nursing any wounds that he received from the monster of a man. Jody became a second mother to the prince and his younger brother when he was born, the two of them often listening to her speak of great mythic beasts that they would one day be able to slay.

When their mother died, Jody's heart sank. The woman was good, too good for the brute that married her. At last, though, she had perhaps found safety.

When the king died, Jody rejoiced with the rest of the kingdom, whooping and hollering. The monster was dead. Long live the king. The monster is dead.

Once the prince was old enough to take over the navy, Jody stepped aside, content to take a quieter role now that she had established a relationship with another woman, Allison. She is considering retiring once she hits the age of forty-nine and living out her days by the ocean.

[/div] [div class=tabcontent2 style=display:none]Xiu Han is typical of noblewomen in Beleth. She is well-educated and poised throughout every day life, knowing where her place is in the grand scheme of things. She has been trained, as all women are, in the art of self-defense should the castle fall to outsiders and knows how to kill a man should the time come to it. She knows where to usher the children and how to cook comfort food.

And she knows rage.

Many who have grown up in the court around Jian Ju know his rage, but he had routinely underestimated the fury that his treatment of the Queen would instill in not just her family, but all those who were loyal to her. Xiu Han was offended by the king's behavior, even from a young age and knew that the cruelty that he committed were completely unbecoming of someone of such high power. Her family was a family of nobles, of people who had worked the land of Beleth and watched its waves lap at the harbor for as long as the phoenix glowed and yet here was a man treating her aunt like dirt.

As such, Xiu Han is one of the many noblewomen who have rebelled and chafed under the brutal king, defying ancient traditions and throwing everything that was once expected of them out the window. They know how to fight. They know how to kill.

And they know rage.

Likes: Her cousins, her husband, listening to her daughter babble, the smell of roses, gossiping with other ladies, walking along the merchants by the sea, eating pastries, drinking tea, brewing potions
Dislikes: The dead king, old men who glare at her, large dresses, wearing layers, doing her hair for too long, bowing to others, being nauseous, the color yellow on her, dying flowers, the chill of winter
[/div] [div class=tabcontent3 style=display:none]Xiu Han's life has been simple and straight-forward, if the life of a rebel lady can be such. She was born to a large family, raised in a large family, and brought to court as the eldest daughter fit to marry of the Han family. She followed her aunt around, playing with her older cousins and younger ones, going home when the time necessitated it.

She rode horses through the countryside, watched the men and women of the army fight one another, and learned of lands far and near. She watched her uncle grow angrier in his fury at having to act proper himself and decided to rebel in any way she could, roping in Prince Jia Yu along the way, encouraging him to rid himself of manners. She stopped bowing, stopped addressing old men and women by honorifics and she imagined herself spitting on the king's shoes.

Xiu Han, like Guo Zhi, had heard the rumors of the king slaying his bastard children. Unlike her cousin, she believed them. The king was capable of great cruelty and Xiu Han had long seen the way her aunt hid the bruises on her arm, had long noticed the way that her cousins scuffed their feet together and avoided eye contact with the mad king.

Some days, she thought he truly must be insane to do what he did and feel no remorse.

She trained in secret with the scouts of the army, learning how to hide blades and unsheathe them at a moment's notice, entertaining fantasies of killing the king in his sleep. She thought that she might be able to protect her aunt from his powerful hand in some way, but the lumbering king was always too strong and his court was filing with those as vile as he was.

When her aunt died, she grieved alongside the entire kingdom and when the king perished, she celebrated alongside them, too. She was soon betrothed to a man out of necessity to further the line, several of her older siblings having perished in wars that the king had created in his heinous effort to grab more power. She choose a man that she knew from court who smiled shyly at her often and the two had a joyous wedding to celebrate not only their union, but a union free of a tyrant king.

Their daughter's birth was also a joyous, albeit painful, experience. Xiu Han has hope for the future, especially with the marriage between her cousin and the Queen of Theren. Her cousin had asked her to take up the responsibility of showing the dear new queen what it meant to be a queen in Beleth.

Her cousin smiles rarely, but she knows he did when she declared that she would teach his soon-to-be-wife everything she knew.
