Fey pulled her jacket closer to herself with one hand when the breeze blew by and lifter her hair. The chill of the air turned her nose and cheeks a deep rosy color but apart from that the clothes Tabby had lent her were keeping her nice and warm.

Seeing his sheepish smile Fey couldn't help but return her own "That's okay, do you live in the town?" She then asked curious. Surely he must, unless he lived in the woods but that didn't seem likely.

When he then came closer she stood very still studying him for a moment. He seemed harmless enough so she let herself relax after he had come to a stop in front of her. She then wondered what he was doing in the woods on his own. She was obviously looking for things, but she couldn't tell what his purpose for being there was. She decided against asking as that would have been rude. It was really none of her business. Maybe he just liked taking walks in the woods she thought deciding to leave it at that.

When he then made the comment about her name she gave a strange look not quite sure what he was talking about until she remembered her oddly colored eyes. "Do I?" She asked with a slightly amused look. Aggie had been the one to to name her and it only went to show the woman's sense of humor.

Fey's mouth took on an amused twist. She looked at him liked he had said something odd and he ducked his head, looking away as he scratched the back of his head, slightly abashed. Perhaps she thought such tales were foolish, Nate thought, suddenly feeling childish in her presence even though she appeared to be the younger of the two.

"There's a tale that says that's how the fae mark their favorites," he tried to explain. "One blue eye, one another color. It's unusual, but pretty."

He backed away and almost tripped over a root. He stumbled a few feet but caught himself before tumbling to the ground. Laughing nervously, Nate turned away to hide his face. Why was he acting like such an oaf?

She had asked if he lived in town and Nate turned back to answer. "Yes, in the village just between the forest and the sea. I don't think I've ever seen you there before. Are you from around here?"

Actually, he was certain he had never seen her there before. He would have remembered her.

Fey had never heard that story before and when he told her that her eyes were pretty she looked down at her feet, suddenly feeling bashful. She had always felt self conscious about her eyes. When she was little the other kids in the village would tease her for them. Then she would go running home crying, and Aggie would have to assure her that they were nothing to be ashamed of and it was her uniqueness that made her beautiful. Even if the children had not been able to see it. Even then she had still didn't felt so sure about it but she had grown more fond of them as she got older.

When she looked up again she had only caught a glimpse of him right before he nearly went tumbling over a tree root. She could not help the small laugh that bubbled up in her chest and escaped her mouth at seeing his clumsiness. Quickly she brought a hand up to her mouth and tried to hide the laughter.

She then shook her head, causing a few strands of silvery hair to fall in her face, when he asked if she was from around there. "No, I'm from Scotland but I'm living in the village now.." She explained with a small frown when she thought of her home. She wanted to be back in Scotland again, she had not chosen to come here. Even though being there was not as bad as she had expected it to be she still felt homesick.

Fey laughed at his near-tumble, causing the back of Nate's neck to suddenly grow warm. His cheeks turned red beneath his freckles. He felt oddly flustered, which was odd. He normally felt so calm in the woods.

"You're from Scotland?" he asked in surprise. She wasn't Scandinavian? Fey said she lived in Elveness now though... Nate suddenly understood and nodded. "I'm sorry, you must miss your home."

Almost every thrall did when they first came, though Elveness soon became their home. Some masters were kinder than others, but he didn't know of anyone in the village who mistreated their servants. He thought of Nanook and Tabby, who practically treated the thralls in their home as family. Maybe Fey would be lucky and have a home like that.

Then again... She was too fair, too pretty. It wouldn't be long before her master claimed his right to take her to his bed. He looked down, frowning, then tried to change the subject. "I ought to be returning. I've been here in the forest all day selecting trees for timber, and it's time I return home."

When Nate then apologized seeming to understand her situation saying she must miss her home she nodded with a sad look. "I do.. but it's okay I'll get over it eventually" She said although she wasn't so sure she believed it. She would probably always miss her home she just wouldn't miss it so much once she got used to her new home.

She then watched him silently as he seemed to be thinking hard about something. From the frown that made it's way onto his face she guessed it must have been unpleasant but she couldn't make a guess at what was running through his head.

"Oh okay, well it was nice meeting you..." She said awkwardly when he suddenly said he should be going. Glancing up towards the sky she thought she should probably get going too. She had promised Tabby she'd be back before sundown and she could see the sun making a quick descent from the sky. She hadn't realized she had spent so much time in the woods, either she had lost track of time or the sun just went down sooner there than it did in Scotland. Maybe it was a combination of both of the things

"I should probably be getting back too" She said giving him one more glance before she turned to go back the way she had come wondering if she's see him again.

"You too," Nate replied, watching her turn to leave. He watched her walk for a few steps, then called out to her. "Fey? I could be wrong, but I think you're going in the wrong direction to get back to the village."

He raised his shoulders and smiled, then ran a hand through his red hair. "We're going the same way. Would you like to walk with me?"

Glancing back when she heard him call out to her. She back and forth from him to the path she had been walking down. It was quite possible that he was right. She had wandered so far without any paying attention that she really wasn't sure which way led to the village.

Feeling foolish she turned and walked back towards him. "I guess I just don't know my way around too well yet" She tried to explain and embarrassed blush appearing over her face.

"If you don't mind letting me walk with you then I'd appreciate it" She said waiting for him to lead the way before she followed after him walking back towards town as the sun continued to set casting a golden orange light through the branches of the trees.

"It's easy to get turned around," he assured her, seeing her embarrassment. "The trees are so tall and dense it's impossible to see the village from most parts of the forest."

He nodded his head in the correct direction and started walking that way. "Are those for medicine?" he asked her after they had been walking for a few minutes, peering down at the basket in her hands.

Fey nodded when he tried to make her feel better about getting lost. She was still going to feel stupid anyway no matter what he said to make her feel better. She liked doing things herself and being independent. She didn't like asking others for help or feeling like she was dependant on them, but even so she would take help, begrudgingly, if she really felt like she needed it, and this was one of those times.

"Yes, I'm a healer." She explained looking at her basket. She would have thought it was obvious the plants she had were for medicine but perhaps that was only because she was much more knowledgeable about the uses of certain plants than most people were. It just came so naturally to her she had grown up learning from Aggie and sometimes she forgot that most people didn't know the same things she did.

When they reached the village and she began walking in the direction of Nanook and Tabby's house and he still continued to walk in the same direction as her she became slightly confused. "Are you following me?"she asked in a teasing tone.

Nate nodded in understanding. "I thought so. I know of the uses of willow bark, but I didn't recognize any of the other stuff."

It all just looked like flowers and weeds to him, Nate thought, but was glad there would finally be a healer in the village. They continued walking, going in the same direction even after they left the forest. He expected her to veer off toward the main road in Elveness, but instead she stayed by his side, headed in the direction of the longhouse where he lived with Nanook and Tabby. It was actually a bit embarrassing, he thought. It did feel like he was following her, or maybe like she was following him.

"No, I swear. I live right up there in that house. See the one with the red and yellow banner nailed to the door?" He pointed to Nanook's house as they approached the back of it. The well was in sight and Camille was feeding the geese while Luned gathered eggs. Luned raised her arm and waved to him and he waved back, smiling.

Fey stopped dead in her tracks when Nate pointed towards Nanook and Tabby's house. For a moment she just stared at him seeming dumbfounded before it all made sense to her. She felt incredibly stupid for not seeing it before now, seeing how much Nate and Nanook looked alike. He had to be the brother she had heard mentioned before.

Suddenly she felt extremely uncomfortable "Uh...that's where I'm going too.." She admitted looking down at her feet as she tucked a few strands of silvery hair behind her ear. Glancing back up she noticed the two women just outside the house he was waving too, but she didn't recognize either. They were both quite pretty she noticed. Did they live in the house too? She wondered. Perhaps one of the women was Nate's wife, that made sense to Fey and the more she thought about it the sillier she felt.

"Um I- there's something I have to do" She blurted out before she took off running toward the house and disappeared through the door. She wasn't sure why she did that, she just felt an intense need to remove herself from the situation. She tried to rationalized her weirdness by telling herself she needed to check on Aggie and get the plants inside to dry. Plus she had promised Tabby to be back before sun down and it was almost dark.

"Wait!" he called after her, but the door slammed shut. Nate sighed, slowing his pace. He was suddenly in no hurry to return home where Fey was currently hiding from him. He'd realized she was a thrall, but hadn't realized she was one that had been taken by his brother.

"Nanook is home?" he asked Camille. She was a middle aged woman, about ten years older than Tabby. She had lived in their home for several years, but had originally come from England. She nodded, tossing the last of the feed to the geese that were clustered around her.

"Got home a few hours ago. You didn't hear the horn?"

Nate shook his head. "No, I was in the forest. I guess I was too far away."

He noticed Luned was staring at the door where Fey had disappeared. She looked displeased over something. She was a few years younger than him, probably close in age to Fey, he thought.

"She lives here now?" Luned asked.

"I guess so," Nate told her, feeling glum. Why had she suddenly run away from him like that? He was reluctant to enter the home, but he wanted to see Nanook and besides, it wasn't like he could just stay out there forever. Camille and Luned followed him in, the latter putting the basket of eggs she had gathered on the table.

Nate saw Fey at the table beside an old woman he had never seen before and he glanced away.

"Little brother!" Nanook exclaimed, stomping forward to tightly embrace him. Nate clapped his brother's back and smiled.

"It's good to see you home, Nanook. I'm glad you made it back safely."

Nanook was grinning behind his scarlet beard. "And with a silver-haired beauty, no less," he said, gesturing to Fey. Nate noticed that Luned was glaring at her from across the room. He didn't know how to respond to his brother's comment and only smiled noncommittally.

Tabby was sitting at the table too, looking tired. "Luned, would you fill my bath? I wish to wash before supper."

Luned looked at Fey and glowered. "Shouldn't she do it? I'm senior to her now. Make the new girl carry the water."

Tabby's face clouded with anger, but Nanook stepped in before his wife could say anything. "When your mistress gives you an order you follow it, Luned. Don't forget your place."

"But-"

Nate interrupted. "Luned, it's okay. I'll help you carry the water." He glanced at Fey, then away again. It seemed somehow she had managed to make an enemy already.

Fey hurried into the house and quickly dropping her basket on the table in front of Aggie before letting herself fall into a chair as she tried to catch her breath again. She had heard Nate try to stop her but it was too late and she probably wouldn't have stopped anyway. She felt different about him now that she knew he was the brother of the person who stole her from her home.

"Goodness gracious what has gotten into you" Aggie asked eyeing her suspiciously as she watched the younger woman catch her breath again

"Nothing, I was just cold so I ran home" she lied. The old woman gave a skeptical look but let the issue drop which fey was grateful for. "Here let me show you what I found" She said changing the subject as she pulled the basket towards her and started to pull out it's contents.

As she was emptying the basket she heard Nate enter followed by the two women who had been out in the yard. She peaked at him for a just a second before she looked back down taking a newfound interest in the otherwise uninteresting plants.

Why did he have to live here? She felt betrayed like he had somehow deceived her, even though he had been just as clueless as she had been. She disliked that she belonged to his family and therefore in a way belong to him. She didn't want him to get the wrong idea about her and think she had fallen into this willingly.

Even though she had her eyes glued to the plants she was quite aware of the conversation going on around her. When she heard the way Nanook talked about her, like he was showing off a prize he's won, she couldn't help but frown.

When she heard the younger of the two women, who had been out side, speak up arguing with Tabby Fey glanced up noticing the way the woman was glaring at her. She wondered if she was a thrall to, surely she must be or Tabby wouldn't be ordering her around like that. However that bit of information didn't explain why she seemed to hate Fey so much. She hadn't said one word to the woman so why was she so against he being there.

"I can do it I really don't mind" Fey spoke up before Nate had offered to help. She didn't want to be the cause of a fight and if carrying some water would smooth whatever feathers she had ruffled with Luned then she's gladly do it. She really didn't want to make any enemies especially with people who were in the same boat as she was.

"Stay out of it," Luned hissed at Fey, stomping over to the barrel of water.

Tabby was still visibly angered by the outburst, but she kept her eyes down on the hands in her lap. "Fey, please help Camille with dinner," she said in a monotone. It was an embarrassment to her that Luned had spoken against her and implied she knew better, but the pregnant woman wasn't the sort to speak in haste. A word behind closed doors with Luned could be just as effective as reprimanding her in front of the entire household.

Luned filled a bucket with water and handed it to Nate to carry up the stairs to Tabby and Nanook's bedroom, then started some water heating over the fire to warm the tub. Something about the Scottish young woman rubbed her the wrong way. It irritated Luned that Fey had been alone with Nate out in the woods and it angered her that she was being shown preferential treatment. By all rights Fey should be performing the most menial tasks, not her! Yet this stranger had arrived and been given some of Tabby's old clothes, had been allowed to wander off into the woods while she shoveled pig shit. I'll teach her her place, thought Luned.

Camille gestured for Fey to follow her and gave her a bowl of potatoes to peel and chop into chunks. "Better learn to get along with Luned," the woman warned sagely, her voice low so that only Fey would hear. "You'll be sharing a room with her from now on."

Fey only shut her mouth and looked wide-eyed as Luned snapped at her. She didn't understand, if she didn't want to get the water so much then why hadn't she just let Fey do it? She decided not to worry about it too much and just gave Tabby a nod when she said to go help the other woman with dinner. "yes. ma'am" She said quickly getting out of her seat and hurrying over to where Camille was. She could tell Tabby was obviously peeved about the whole situation and Fey was not interested in getting on her bad side, because quite frankly she looked a little scary.

Fey followed the other woman eyeing her cautiously, half expecting her to hate her as much a Luned did. When she instead was very pleasant she relaxed and took the bowl of potatoes and began peeling them, working diligently. "I haven't done anything to her, why is she so against my presence?" Fey whispered back trying to defend herself, but when she heard she'd be sharing a room with younger woman she couldn't keep from frowning. She didn't say anything but she was wondering to herself if maybe something could be done about that.

Honestly Fey wasn't to fond of Lunde either. From what she had seen the woman only acted like a brat, which was not a trait Fey found attractive. That being said, she knew if they were going to live in the same house they'd have to find a way to coexist without fighting.

"Oh, I imagine she's just jealous of you," Camille commented with a sigh. She had taken a large chunk of meat she had bought from the butcher earlier that day to the counter and was cutting it into smaller pieces to be cooked. "She's got a bit of a high temper anyway, but now another girl comes along that's close to her age, well..." She shrugged. Young women were just like that sometimes. It seemed Luned just didn't like the look of Fey for some reason.

"Don't let it bother you. Just do as Tabby tells you and you'll be fine."

That wasn't completely true though. She had a feeling she knew another reason Luned might be harboring resentment toward the new woman in their household. "You might want to keep your eyes off Nanook's young brother," she advised. "A thrall has no place looking at a man like him anyway, but Luned has it in her head she'll win him over and defy custom. If she sees you out and about with him, she might get the wrong idea."

"Jealous?" Fey asked in a bit of amazement. What about her could possibly make Luned jealous? Fey didn't have anything to be jealous of. She only felt she was moderately pretty when compared to the other girl, so she couldn't be jealous of her looks, and Luned didn't know anything else about her, so Fey really didn't understand the the woman's feelings. As she contemplated what the Camille said she continued peeling and chopping up the potatoes, getting through them all rather quickly.

When Camille then warned her to keep her eyes off Nate her brows furrowed as she began to understand the situation more clearly. "Don't worry I have no interest in him" She said almost a little too quickly. Fey really had no desire to fight Luned over Nate or to try and compete to 'win him over'. She hardly knew him, they had only had one conversation. If Luned got the wrong idea about them then she would just have to set things straight and maybe then they'd be able to get along.

"What is the custom?" She then asked once she finally remembered the rest of what Camille had said. She didn't really know how things worked but it wasn't hard for her to figure out she wasn't supposed to fraternize with Nate but did that apply to everyone else in town that wasn't in the same position as her?

Camille transferred the meat she had cut into chunks into a pot of water that was boiling with some herbs to cook. She then took the potatoes that Fey had chopped and put those into a different pot. When the second pot was simmering away she instructed Fey to wash the greens for a salad and leaned against the counter to talk to her.

"It's not that different from home," she told Fey. She and Luned were also from the British Isles. "Back home there are serfs, yeah? And a serf would never marry the son of a lord or something like that. It's much the same here, but to a greater extent. Free men don't marry thralls, though Luned seems to think she's some exception." Camille rolled her eyes, showing what she thought of that notion. "Thralls can marry other thralls, but they have to get permission from their master."

Camille took a deep breath, considering whether or not she wanted to share the next bit of Viking custom with Fey. Fey seemed the sort of young woman that might be shocked and appalled by it, but the older woman reasoned it was better for her to find out sooner rather than later.

"This is where Britain's a bit different than the Scandinavian countries," she told Fey with a frown. "It's common for Viking men to take their female thralls to their beds from time to time, whether they're married or not. Another man can even ask to have his way with another man's thrall, but it's up to their master in the end. We don't really get much say in it."

In Britain, particularly in times of war, rape and killing was fairly common even among the British. She had seen girls brutally taken by their own countrymen, but it wasn't a custom back home. On the other hand, Vikings didn't view it as an act of violence. They considered thralls their property to use how they liked, and that included taking them to bed. Camille had been taken by Nanook countless times and didn't really mind, but she doubted Fey would see things the same way.

Fey stayed quiet and worked on washing the greens she was given as Camille explained how things worked. She gave a nod or hummed in response here and there just to show she was listening but the more she heard the more unhappy she was. She was downright angry. What made Nanook,Tabby,Nate or anyone else any better than her? She had been free when she was in Scotland and she hadn't agreed to any of this. Everything she had done for Tabby so far she had done willingly because she liked Tabby, not because she felt like she had to. Hearing that she now had to ask permission to do things she could do freely before bothered her to no end.

"And you don't have a problem with any of that?" She asked Camille wondering why she didn't seem at all bothered. Fey was very bothered. It was an insult to her honor . She may not have been high in society back home, but she was at least of a higher status than this. She only began to get more upset as Camille continued explaining how thralls were expected to go to bed with their masters. She felt sick and stopped what she was doing looking horrified.

"How can you just let that happen?" She asked not understanding the woman's passiveness about the subject. They were basically being treated like farm animals and she was just talking about it like it was fine. It wasn't fine, it wasn't fine at all and Fey wasn't going to let that happen to her. She refused to let that happen to her.

Slowly she backed away from Camille and the food before she turned running towards the door before anyone had time to do anything. She got out the door and ran as fast as her legs would take her going back towards the woods again. She couldn't be there anymore she refused to live there by those rules. She just needed to get away and the forest was the only place she could take comfort in. Once she was far enough away she would figure out what else to do but she didn't have time to think yet, she just had to keep moving.

Camille clucked her tongue disapprovingly, but before she could try to explain herself to Fey the girl was darting to the door and running. The door slammed shut behind her and Nanook and Tabby looked up from the table in surprise.

"What happened?" Tabby asked, concerned. "It's dark out. She shouldn't be going out, it could be dangerous."

Camille scowled to herself and wiped her wet hands on her apron. "It's nothing, I'll get her," she answered. Fey was being naive and belligerent. There had been so much accusation in her words and her eyes, but she hadn't even waited to hear her out, Camille thought.

Nate and Luned were hurrying down the stairs, having heard the commotion. "Where's Fey?" Nate asked automatically, seeing the stricken look on his sister-in-law's face and the notable absence of the silver haired beauty who had just arrived. She had run from him that afternoon, and it seemed she had run again.

"She ran toward the woods," Camille answered, and watched in surprise as Nate ran to the door and bolted after her. Luned watched with narrowed eyes, her hands poised on her hips.

Fey kept going without looking back not caring what went on after she left. Maybe she acted a little harshly towards Camille, after all it wasn't her fault. Even so, she didn't think she could have said anything more to make her feel better. She could try to justify it all she wanted but Fey refused to get roped up in it.

It was dark now and she could hardly see more than a few feet in front of her the only light came from the moon and stars, but even that was blocked out once she made it under the cover of the trees. She kept stumbling over roots and sticks until she finally had to stop to catch her breath leaning against a tree for support as her chest heaved up and down just trying to fill her lung with air.

Only a moment later she had pushed herself upright and continued running at a substantially slower pace now as her muscles grew tired and she began running out of breath rather quickly. She wanted to go home, or at least get somewhere far away from there. She felt bad for leaving Aggie but she knew the old woman would be okay for now. After she figured out what to do she'd go back for her.

I should have brought a torch, Nate thought as he passed from the knee-high grass of the meadow into the dark shadows of the forest. The sun was sinking lower and lower by the moment and the woods were a tangled mass of black shadows. The cicadas were beginning to sing to one another, the constant chirp an oddly piercing monotone. He saw the shadow of a crow flap away into higher boughs of the tree it was resting in, disturbed by the human that was moving almost blindly through the woods. Twigs snapped underfoot and he felt vines snapping against his ankles as he determinedly tore through.

"Fey?" he called out, listening. He heard the many sounds of the forest, but not the sound of another human. He moved along, dashing as quickly as he could more deeply into the wood. A stone rose abruptly from the dense foliage and caught his toes as he half-ran and Nate went tumbling to the ground for a moment, skinning his palms. He quickly picked himself back up again and was on the move once more.

"Fey?" he called again, cupping his hands around his mouth to help the sound travel. "Fey, come back," he implored. "I don't know why you left, but it's not safe out here alone at night!"

She slowed to more of a stumbling walk after a while later. Despite not being able to see much she did her best to avoid tripping over the various stones, roots, and sticks that riddled the forest floor. Hearing the sound of other things moving around near her she felt a little uneasy and pulled her coat closer around her mostly for comfort. She rationalized the sounds by telling herself it was probably only squirrels scurrying about but she didn't know for sure as she couldn't see.

She turned back to look over her shoulder when she heard Nate calling out to her "Go away!" She yelled back and picked up her pace a little more but as she did she tripped over a fallen tree branch and went tumbling to the ground with a small umph, but instead of picking herself up she just stayed there. Pushing herself up into a sitting position, she brought her knees up to her chest and wrapped her arms around them letting out a deep sigh as she heard Nate continue to call for her.

"Stop looking for me I don't want to go back" She called back hoping he would either give up on trying to bring her back or walk past her. He was the last person she wanted to see after Camille had explained everything to her. She didn't want to go back if what the woman had said was true and if she did go back with him it would only give Luned reason to hate her even more than she already did.

Fey's voice pierced the darkness, causing the cicadas to pause in their cry for a moment. Just as quickly they picked it back up again, not bothered by the girl in the midst of the forest. Nate slowed to a walk, then stopped altogether.

The moon and stars shed just enough light for him to pick his way carefully through the undergrowth, but not enough for him to see Fey. He squinted in the direction from which her voice had come but saw nothing but the dark shapes of trees. What had happened that had made her suddenly run? She had seemed fine earlier that evening when he had walked with her in the woods, but now it seemed she wanted nothing to do with him or his people.

There was nothing for her out here though. It was almost winter and if she stayed outside at night she would freeze to death or meet some other kind of horrible end. Nate rubbed his arms, trying to bring warmth back to his hands. He hadn't stopped to put on a coat or warmer outerwear and the cold was beginning to seep in.

"Please come back," he called out to her, beginning to move forward once more, though more slowly now. He didn't hear the sound of her moving, so perhaps she had stopped. He was the only thing rustling through the forest. "I don't know what happened, but you need to come inside. It's too cold out here," he told her sensibly. "You'll freeze to death."

For a moment or two the only sounds came from him as he made his way through the trees. She just listened carefully a deep frown setting in when he got closer and closer to where she was but luckily he could not see her.

"Why? So you or your brother can bring me to your bed?" She asked harshly when he continued to plead with her to come back. Wasn't Luned enough? Why was he so insistent on bringing her back? She wanted to be alone. Even if the woods were not the most hospitable place at least there she wouldn't be treated like property or be forced into anything she didn't want to do.

When he mentioned it being too cold she shrugged indifferently despite him not being able to see her. It was cold, she had barely noticed until then as she had been too busy making her way into the woods and trying not to trip that she hadn't allowed herself to think about the coldness. The air had a bite to it and by then her hands had started to feel numb but she was too stubborn to give in just yet.

Perhaps freezing to death would be better she thought for a second, but she didn't believe it. She didn't want to die like that. She searched her brain for another solution one that would allow her to avoid going back with him but still keep her alive, but she came up short. She really didn't want to go back, she was afraid too. How was she supposed to agree to go back when that more or less meant she was willingly giving into the fate Camille had told her of. Agreeing to go back went against every little voice in her head that had told her to run in the first place.
