Nation Building BeckonCall's Fantasy Nation-building RPG thread

Something that can be brought up in the faction meeting then. We can make a PM for that bit of business or just discuss it here. What would you like to do?

Meh either way works though how the rats find things when they make landfall may effect things. I think it's pretty obvious I'm making a pitch for them to try digging a warren in the hills with the bulls.

Hey, if you surveyed it then you have first dibs, that's how land grabs work. My rats just showed up so they have to work with whatever land is available right now.

@Heyitsjiwon

My rats could just as easily start digging inside the shadowfields, I only figured the lowhill prairie would be a good spot to keep close because of the natural hill defenses. But the warren's going to be underground anyway for the most part, so defenses are practically taken care of there. Really they just need a wide open space that can account for population growth, and right now the shadowfields are looking pretty good for that since nobody is using the land for anything.

Maybe Skype collab it?
I would LOVE a skype forum or chat forum if people had times they were reasonably sure they could participate...

EVERYONE: If you COULD participate in a skype or discord forums, what times are best for you? What are not ideal but somewhat manageable? Include your Timezone or Default to PST.

Even if we CAN'T get everyone in one place at one time (which IS fat chance) -- if I am able to put in the extra work we can have the next best thing... if we have an AGENDA of issues to be discussed in counsel, or if players have bits they want to make sure everyone hears, I can try to run a forum in "unreal time" -- that is, Proposals on an agenda would be presented, and I would Cut and Paste or paraphrase particular persuasion or argument so even if somebody came later they might get the gist.

I'll do my best to accomodate everyone... is there a way to make specific posts editable by more than the poster and the thread leader? If so, each person can edit in their own bits, if it was a question of opening permissions or specific posts. Or I could get a a "FORUM" tag, and that's where official business is discussed In-character, where it is assumed leaders either can get together or have delegates to represent their interests.

If you have ideas of like ideas, let me know. I don't think we're doing too bad as we are, though!

@SpiralErrant

That's actually how that meeting would go down between the Tyren and the Ratkin. Milkweed would appreciate the offer of cohabitation, but he knows that his people will need plenty of room to grow and he doesn't want to encroach on any lands that have already been occupied within the colony.

@Beckoncall

My times are a little fluid, but for the most part I'm available between 1400-2000 PST during the week, and then the weekends are free unless I get told otherwise.

As for a group forum where we can edit the document as a whole, I think Google Docs is the best solution to that. It's free, simple to use, and it allows everyone in the document to edit it as they need to or add comments where they see fit.

It might be possible to share the labor -- if both factions are going to be digging in an area, you could have an arrangement where the lion's share of minerals dug in the hills would go to the Attolians, but the Attolians are in effect helping to dig the warrens (at least in and around that hill) with and for the Ratkin -- when the mine peters out or can chase a vein far enough away -- Then the attolians can get deep or far enough away not to be in Ratkin Hair and vice-versa. Ratkin tunnel growth would be sped up, and hard to break areas will be just what the miners are there to clear away. It is also likely that Attolian miners will make Ratkin tunnels additionally structurally sound (not to imply ratkin burrows are deathtraps) -- A geologist working in-house could potentially help find voids and caverns, if any.

I'm just saying -- don't look at it as a conflict until you've entertained it as an opportunity. Attolian miners would also be happier for access to Ratkin Food and Water... while not standard Attolian fare, supply lines would be vastly shortened.

Now if you could only be sure all your tools wouldn't go missing...

@Heyitsjiwon : You may have done assaying in the barrier hills too, if you have a particular post in mind, please cite it, I just remember your last assaying endeavor was in the southmost hills, which I supposed was on the pretense of getting closer to Tyren territory without encroaching.

@Beckoncall

Yea, so far it is just the southern hills. My logic was that it's simply closer than barrier hills and we do not have a presence in that area, so it seems less safe over there as well.

@KamiKahzy

The proposal sounds wonderful to me.

Aw well that's nice *awkwardly hides bouquet*

@Beckoncall

I'm fine with either option, I've got an ongoing RP chat channel with other people I've RP'd with around the world and it's helped us manage group or one to one collabs and group ones on multiple occasions and then just copy pasting them onto the site. We have started getting into google docs too though (a very nice option) so that's a strong possible contender too. I feel comfortable adding folks from this group on skype but that is kind of personal in its way and docs could be a good middle ground for that.

(happy to PM my skype name to those interested though)

Yea, that ballista could be quite the deadly coastal defense piece.
I was thinking it could perhaps be useful against one of these large creatures we might eventually face or hordes of gnolls and or/skeletons.

@Beckoncall @Heyitsjiwon

Then I suppose this makes the first official joint venture between the Ratkin and the Attolians. Meanwhile, since this is going to be my faction's new home, I'm going to do some serious delegating for this project. I'm putting HALF of my population to work on this. Half of the Pups, half of the Bucks/Does, and half of the Clean Paws as supervisors, with Coalback and Tinker leading things from an Aged perspective. Nateema will have a say in things as well since she will be scoping out the best spiritual places underground for nesting, storage, growing Black Corn and mushroom crops, and most importantly the locations of the new crypt, counsel den, and meeting hall. However before I fully commit Nateema to that task I have another job in mind for her concerning the captured dark elf witch. So once that business is dealt with (which will be in the VERY near future) she will be free to help in the planning of the new warren.

Also, since my rats will be providing a lot more labor than the Attolians can bring to bear, they're going to ask for a larger share of any ore that's found in the clearing of the main warren spaces. I think 1/3 share of the finds is a sufficient price for labor costs.

The other half of my faction is going to work in the fields, sowing all the crops we brought over with the exception of the Black Corn crop. Half of that is going above ground while the other half is being sown in the warren. Hawthorn will be the Aged in charge, because even though he's not a farmer by trade he does have some knowledge in growing his own plants, so some knowledge is better than none. If there is not enough room cleared in Boulder Field to sow all these crops then the paws that are in the farming team will help in clearing the field to make room.

The Dirty Paws will be on guard duty during the work cycles, at least the ones that I do not commit to the colony defenses when that matter is brought up and settled. Work shifts will be established so that there are fresh bodies working all day and all night on both the warren and the fields, rotating out to give the other workers rest when they need it. Ideally they'll be 8 hour shifts for each team, which will give them plenty of time to rest and relax after their shift is over.

@KamiKahzy

While I do agree that you are bringing in a lot of labor, I am providing expertise and am putting in quite a lot of manpower to the project. Plus, the land that this joint-venture is occurring is under Attolian interests/development. This project would effectively give this land to the rat-kin and close much Attolian development in that direction. Thus, in consideration of other costs with this proposal, I am going to have to request that the Attolians receive 75% of the finds from this venture. That said, for any further ambitious ground works projects, the Attolians will give preference to the Ratkin as the first faction to approach for a joint venture.

@Heyitsjiwon

That is all true, but remember that we are a single colony and while each faction may control certain parts of the colony, at the end of the day we are all in this together. Claiming direct ownership over land that is not being used for Attolian housing is a bit presumptuous since the entire area should be considered colony property first. The Ratkin are grateful that the Attolians are providing as much manpower and expertise as they are, and they are also grateful that they will consider them first for any future excavation projects. Considering that the Attolians did have first claim to the use of this land and that they are giving up said use once the mined out sections have fulfilled their purpose, and considering the labor distribution between both parties, the Ratkin ask if the Attolians would be satisfied with a 70% share of the ore found within the sections dedicated to the new Warren.

70% is an agreeable number. It is a pleasure to see the new inhabitants of the New World becoming so quickly integrated to the colony. May the future be bright and prosperous for our people.

If you would be so gracious, at some point try to host an online chat like that which you've already had going -- your experience taking the lead will be a model for what is to come. You could start a google doc and show us how that is done? I promise to adopt as much hassle/logistics once I've learned the ropes and can see it working.

Again, so glad you're here @SpiralErrant ...

Oh you...

Well with the online skype chat we just made a group and used it as an OOC chat group same as we do this one. It just gave conversations a bit more pace. Then since everyone was in the group it was easy to add each other if we wanted to do a quick collab.

I'm still a little new to google docs but I can take a swing at making a group and we could tinker with that.

@Beckoncall

I'm more familiar with Google Docs if you'd like me to handle that aspect. It's actually very simple, I just need everyone to send me their Google Mail accounts, or make one and then send it if you don't have one. PM's for this please, don't want contact information spreading around on teh webz.

I have now officially made the GDoc, it is bare and empty and sad right now. Please send me your GMails in PM so that we can make it less empty and sad.

Today is either going to be a very slow day or a very tiring one -- but I'm just letting everyone know that I will be taking stock of all declared actions on or around the welcoming of the springborn and getting into order of process, as well as giving a casualty tally.

With all of the new talk of avenues of communication I'm both impressed and in wonder where we are or where it might take us...

but the fact remains, there are orders to be taken up -- the line between order and intent has gotten fuzzy, but I'm going to run with it.

Game on!

Also potentially rolled event projecting strain with ratkin arrival. Nothing certain, but heads up and what happens in the immediate future may have a bearing.
