Nation Building BeckonCall's Fantasy Nation-building RPG thread

t in my post

Now that you mention it I did read this, but it was unintentional that I did not acknowledge it in character. Perhaps, in their arrogance, the High Elves are like the French in their expectations of other races speaking their language. Of course they speak High Elven! it's the most beautiful language their mindset tells them. Also, as I think you are saying, that there here are times for example when I speak a foreign language (i.e Spanish, German) and the conversant does not register that I am speaking to them in German because it seems so natural. I would say it's a combination of the two, but in reality, my cat was sitting on my keyboard, the twins were crying, and my wife was asking me to buy something on amazon as I wrote that. I will add that the Linguist might have omitted it to the Prince for the sake of brevity.

@Beckoncall : On another note: The High elves soldiers wear ceremonial white when they go to formal war. When they are on an expedition they were cloaks and uniforms that blend in as camouflage. I think Beckoncall was describing the sails, or perhaps the images I posted were misleading?

@Prince Vaethorion :

Images misleading, for sure -- but I will proclaim continuity on this basis:

The high elves arrive for such an endeavor in FULL PAGENTRY -- it is not custom for high elves at first sight to not be IMMEDIATELY RECOGNIZABLE for who they are -- not the least reason their assertion that their ways are the finest, and such splendor is not hidden without profound and clearly stated reason.

I'll have to read to the bottom to know the full breadth of any of this, but for the moment I'm proud to say the high elf initial post is up, and I'll be moving to Tyren excavation then points further downpage... xD

sneaked a post in before I get my wisdom teeth removed tomorrow, being in pain and loopy is gonna be real fun. xD

Also, did I miss a meeting where everybody decided that wood elves are going to be called the good old fashion Tolkien sylvan elves? lol

@Leusis : I didn't get that memo -- but the word "Sylvan" I was under the impression simply means "of the wood" -- so "Wood Elf" and "Sylvan Elf" are basically interchangable.

@Beckoncall @Leusis

The Prince was intended to go to the war council, but I see now whereas I wrote it in the text, I did not put it into "orders". I see I did so from the prospective of Prince giving orders, and not as orders in general. I will specify better in future posts. I see what I wrote was vague, not an order and not clear that he himself was leading this party. I meant to continue what Beckoncall had started on the ship, that if leaders were meeting he would be there. No matter, for continuity sake, we can continue as if he is still on the beach or whatever makes sense. I was unclear as to whether the Prince could make the meeting in time. All good either way.

I wrote :

"The Prince was determined to make haste with a host of soldiers and some nobles to go meet with the other leaders." and

"He would not waste time getting to the meeting if possible to do so in time."

Good luck with the wisdom teeth -- I didn't remember a thing when they did it to me. I hope they give you ACTUAL pain medicine.

Yes, I made the distinction, like Penn-sylvan-ia. Tolkien's wood Elves incidentally are called Silvan Elves, not Sylvan elves. This was deliberate, for when editors corrected this, Tolkien corrected it back to Silvan.

@Prince Vaethorion :

"He would not waste time getting to the meeting if possible to do so in time."

At the rate you're throwing orders -- you're not making it to the meeting with your detachment... depending on how things shake out, you might get loose while folk are still in Tyren-ville (Harun'taran) -- because it seems everyone is in a holding pattern for approx. another 48 hours game time.

Makes sense.

@Prince Vaethorion just to make it clear I'm fine with you keeping the Prince as the one who's going to the bridge if that's what you intended. Just assume all Belanor did was greet him.

Oh Shiiiiiiiiii....

Guess I was wrong about those earlier thoughts of that spirit being secretly evil.... or was I?

The scariest thing anyone ever told me was that if I met the Devil himself, most anyone would likely find him to be an extremely likable and charismatic fellow.... Enjoy your sweet Paranoia. xD

Damnit! Maybe I should just embrace it and dive right into religious zealotry, the Dracos worshipers make it seem so nice.

@SpiralErrant :

If there's one thing I can hope for as a GM, it's that even if it's "good" or even a great boon... they're always a chance of it becoming a huge liability or causing some diplomatic or social problems down the line... xD

Complications and Unexpected synergies are the bread and butter of a compelling story! :D

@General Deth Glitch :

Can't be sure where to start without you telling me the last thing you remember -- but here's a quick synopsis:

1) High Elves and Croc Men cleaned up the beach area and are building some spiffy docks -- It's cleaner and more attractive for the Exiles who live there and call the beach home... but there is rising concern that Aymarans and High Elves might not respect the Exiles "Claim" to the beach...

2) Elves are hunting sharks and fish like the Exiles, but so far no competition, there's enough for everybody.

3) The Attolians met with a Gnoll Leader -- he didn't make a truce explicitly, but said the colony owes the Gnolls 8 baskets of MASK-FOLK HEADS to settle their blood debt for killing their patrol.

4) Attolian leader been communing with some spirit in the marketplatz fountain, it seems to like blood magic.

5) "Imps" of some kind live under the ruins... they do not seem hostile.

6) The Tyren dug up an ancient idol of some spirit honored by the lost mage kings... they brought it home with them.

Just an update, my next posts will be minor points relating to Belanor's recent activity (though it might be brief) then High elves in the top of the Que.

We're presently at approx. 36 hours before the Wood Elves said time is up -- but based on Sir Lothar's dealings with the Gnolls, direct aggression against the gnolls may (or may not) still seem a priority, or potentially second to the mask-folk if the colonists want to try and pay the perhaps exorbitant "blood debt" for the slaying of the Gnoll patrol... or perhaps further communication may be sought with the mysterious "Walks in Cull"
Right... So I gotta kick elves off my Beach?
Also... those Imps a problem in anyway, taking small numbers of supplies or anything, even minor?
You'd have to take inventory to be absolutely sure (success/time might depend on how many workers you assigned to do so) -- but your quartermaster thinks that's doubtful -- most supplies are still stored in the depression, and the only sewer access there is VERY centrally located and observed.

@General Deth Glitch :

KICK THEM ALL OFF! xD

On a serious note, if you do wish to put your foot down about 'Turf' -- I'd be interested in seeing how you handle that... as it is, there is already some tension in your folk about their presence, but the High elves are already starting to relocate to tents in the 'Platz... not idea yet where the crocs will end up... but you should balance settling the concerns of your people with diplomatic concerns...

As it is, the Exiles are MUCH better off with a cleaner beach (the Aymarans eat your garbage) and the dock is a GORGEOUS enhancement to your fairly delapidated constructions. Also... the High Elf Bard is VERY entertaining to hear tell from Exiles who hang out at the Inn...

Question... if the colony is trying to get running water back to the platz... wouldn't that make the sewers not so habitable for the Aymarans?

Well, they usually live in filthy, deadly, horribly diseased death worlds. In comparison I imagine a little feces coming down some pipes is hygienic to them.
