Nation Building BeckonCall's Fantasy Nation-building RPG thread

Also, just wanted to clarify something, Caelis didn't call the Tyren animals. His linguist did. The linguist expressed his opinion of the Tyren and Caelis pretty much said that the Tyren were diligent workers and that was enough for him to consider them as a major contribution and part of the colony regardless of the fact that the linguist thought that they were acting like animals.

I dont have time to get a response up.. but.. I feel like Maeder would try Dissuade the Tyren from helping talking peace and the elves as well, just to look fair.

@Leusis :

On a more serious note -- definitely navigate this situation ideally (or un-ideally) among yourselves -- but it would seem the ENTIRE IDEA of this new diplomatic overture is to show face(s) that WERE NOT implicated in the death of the Gnolls. Orm's presence might be pushing it, but BELANOR'S behing there* -- is in my eyes almost tantamount to sabotage -- the elves have demonstrated themselves above and beyond all other colonists so far a direct threat to life and limb of the Gnolls, and their ancestral enemies share a (tenuous) relation to wood elves by blood.

Proclaiming that the council would hold their tongues is also bordering on "bunnying" -- a cardinal no-no of forum gaming.

As I said, Work it out -- but I'll remind you Leusis -- Belanor had a turn where he was in charge of the diplomatic overture, the other factions went with it, and dealt with the fallout. It might not be exceedingly sportsmanlike not to allow the Attolians a turn at bat, similarly allowed to run the show and plan how it's going to unfold... even if that meant no wood elves, which seems to be an already desired criteria.

Just trying to be a good referee -- by all means, let the cards fall how they may -- but I don't want any toes stepped on... it will detract from the game if some players think they can't have agency because another player or players overwrite them... it's great we have an OOC section to discuss these things!

Any thoughts?

*By negative reaction modifiers alone, antecedent to persuasion and diplomacy checks. :D

@General Deth Glitch :

Thanks for weighing in, brother. You don't need a lot of time to post if you can still make your intentions or goals known.

Players feel free to color the scene with the protestations of the Exile leader... xD

If your intentions and goals are known, and you are okay with it -- then others can be a platform for your (or your shared) interests... one of the best ways you can do this is letting me know where you stand (even with just a line or two) and I can use advisors or named characters (like Baez, for example) to represent your interests. As GM surely I may feel the freest to do so, but if you don't mind some bunnying for your character -- I am not against it AS LONG AS IT BELIEVABLY REPRESENTS THE INTERESTS OF MAEDER OR HIS FACTION.

same would go for anybody. <3

I just deleted my most recent post, everybody do your things, I'm gonna be gone for a couple days anyway.

I know but the way you described it was the linguist described them as acting like animals and Caelis AGREED. There was no mention of him saying out loud that they were hard workers and even then he let it slide. To the Tyren they pretty much just called them "The A-word" a big insult in their books.

Your characters have human nobility privilege, own it, that doesn't reflect poorly on you. Look at how the high elves are :P

Hope no feathers got Ruffles, leusis... Gonna miss you while you're out! xD

Feathers were slightly ruffled, though thats just because I don't enjoy being told to take a seat on the bench while everybody else plays a game.

Well, my apologies for that, but I think you should hash out what the Attolians want and either come to an understanding or change their minds -- I only spoke up because it seemed Caelis was given 72 hours (by you I might add) to try his own idea... It seems to me that you have been quite involved.

In a perfect world more players would be going the same places often -- it would certainly mean less work for me... I just wanted to make sure nobody overran anyone else.

Hopefully @Heyitsjiwon will weigh in or you can hash it out together.

Thanks for being forthcoming, I really do appreciate it.

@Leusis :

Besides, this is a big deal but it's certainly not the ONLY deal... See if you can think of any other orders for your people... I'd love to process them. :)

PS: I worked really hard to get your bro ready to on-ramp... Hope y'all will enjoy playing together.

I completely understand where you're coming from, everybody needs a turn to be out in the front. I only intended to tag along to keep myself posting instead of sitting around.

I didn't mean for it to seem like I was trying to push everybody behind me in terms of importance. It's just everybody thus far has had something thrown at them to keep them engaged and active. Being the first one cut entirely out of an important event just makes me feel isolated.

I respect your perspective, and what I've been seeing is the elves as being very involved with most of the recent goings on... the world has lots to do in though, so even if you're taking a 72 hour longview for a certain event doesn't mean there aren't scads of other things of grave importance you be involved in. You were driving the bus on Gnoll diplomacy, so your footprint is still firmly placed there -- as it sets the stage for anything that is to come.

I'm just glad that ultimately nothing like this is going to compromise enjoyment of the game.

@Heyitsjiwon

That's a good question. Vermarken's treatise on the elevation of humanoids and awakened animals (a commonly cited work on the subject) states that most bipedal races of particular animal stock tend to be on a spectrum intermediate of the purestrain animal in question, and the purestrain human as a cosmic "genetic blank" -- This lead you a secondary treatise by Scientific Sorceror Vulpulae asserting that there are two families of humanoids, divinely inspired creatures that were designed by the gods (like dwarves and elves for example) and other humanoids that arose on their own through the conflux of wild forces, nature, or the dabblings of the sub-divine. It was basically a tremendously popular but hateful piece asserting that humans were basically "ape-men", just as orcs are "swine-men" and Gnolls are "Dog-men" -- whilst other races are purer, chosen, and superior.

There's a lot of justification for racism and hatred in magical academia, it would seem. The Dragon anthropologist Domathrax published that bipedal creatures are basically a step up from bacteria -- where mold and bacteria break down dead matter for recycling, the constant lunacy and short-sighted violence of humanoids assures that static LIVING or non-organic matter gets routinely shifted around, crumbled, and built up again...

...So that Dragons needn't be bothered.

TL:DR -- they may have some color vision, but likely a compromise between a regular dog and a human.

Interested in seeing how the Tyren react to being left behind by the Attolians... what if Orm follows them anyway? xD
