At the Adventurers' Table

I'm picturing the anime Princess Mononoke as you describe Ol' Stony walking through the forrest and leaving life and growth behind, just like the spirit from the movie.

Huh! I haven't seen that excellent movie in years, but yes, I imagine it's like that. =)

So, who shall begin the Epic Tale of the Flying Half Elf?

It's up! =)

I'm writing one more little bit before I go to bed here, too. Enjoy! =)

And the good news is that Ori and Powerpaw are not dead yet. Lets just hope that they stay that way long enough for Bria to ply them with some healing magic.

But with our luck, he landed on the TOP of the elemental, making it that much harder to get to him.

@Wolf Rawrrr Not at all. Leonard is much closer (eye-level) to the fires than the huge Skaagenrackner (his head is up where the smoke is). Good question you asked there. =)

Once again, I hope to post after work (which is slowing down to a sane schedule). =)

I think Otiorin's response is reasonable considering he lost three-quarters of his health in one shot.

Captain Hesperus

Well, the way I run this game, I was not going to ask you to roll a Fortitude saving throw for Otiorin from the impact (Powerpaw got to roll that instead). The reason being - if Otiorin had taken that much damage, say, during the battle, I would not have asked for it then either. There is a rule we discarded in 3.5 concerning "Death from Massive Damage." Basically, it states that if you take over 50 hit points in one hit, you must save or die right there. I don't like this rule (and neither do my players). It's bad enough your character sustained that much damage, now you get to roll a die to see if your character dies on the spot? What if you're unlucky? Look at the way you've been rolling recently, Cap'n. I'd hate for Otiorin to just up and die due to a bad roll... That's an unwelcome game-changer if there ever was one.

Situations like this are one big reason I don't often use "save or die" spells, poison, etc.

Plus, this is your character; you know him better than I do. You say the pain would knock him out? O.K.! He's out. Now let's hope he doesn't "turn in his sleep" up there; he just might fall off Powerpaw to the forest floor below! Ha ha! Just kidding! =)

Really, though. Given what just happened, I can't say I'd be conscious either... =)

Well, my reasoning is that ol' Oti isn't a hardened fighter like Kitty-face or even Kitrin. The worst injuries he's probably had was a sprained ankle from dropping too far from a rooftop or a pulled muscle from a near-failed roof-to-roof jump. This kind of impact, even cushioned by Powerpaw, would still be traumatic to him, though he may lapse back into consciousness, because he's too interested in what other culinary delights the Hobbits back at the wagon can produce...

Captain Hesperus

@Captain Hesperus I have a minor correction for your last post - the minotaur Bria was interacting with was the greataxe-wielding warrior, not the archer (whose whereabouts, at least to Otiorin, are unknown). The greataxe-carrying warrior made his saving throw against Luna's Fire Bolt and was knocked into negative hit points. Normally, such creatures are quite unconscious, but for the sake of a good story, I had them interact. And speaking of interacting, I really like Oti's most-recent post and your reasoning for having him fall into unconsciousness in the first place - that's just good role-playing, both entertaining and accurate. =)

There will be more with Bria and Otiorin later tonight, Real Life willing. As for now, work calls. Take care and have fun, everyone! =)

Ah, love. Such sweetness and turmoil. [media]

It's an old, old story:

Boy meets girl, boy holds secret love for girl, girl holds secret love for boy, girl incinerates forest, Greater Earth Elemental threatens girl, girl professes love for boy, boy reciprocates, curtains and the sounds of late-night furniture rearrangements...

Captain Hesperus

It works! Two star-crossed lovers, one who exists for the forest, the other whose least ability is hugely deleterious to trees and wildlife on general, trying to reconcile their feelings for one another. His family (animals and forest-based Elementals) fear and hate her for her fire affinity. And as for her family? Do you really think the illustrious Kaftan mages would look well upon a union with a Ranger?

Captain Hesperus

"WHAT?!" Skaagenrackner roars. "OHHHHHH NO! THERE WILL BE NO SOPPY KISSY-FACE GOINGS-ON IN MY FOREST!"

*Skaagenrackner uses AoE Super-Squishy-Stomp on Wolf and Luna.*

[dice]4200[/dice]

GM: That's a hit!

[dice]4201[/dice]

GM: It's O.K.! You two can save for half damage! Good luck! 8D

Vardadraug: Hey! Skaagenrackner, I liked that Ranger!

Skaagenrackner: Oh, just get another one! Humans breed like rabbits anyway!

Sparkle: Did you really have to squash me too? I had nothing to do with your burning forest. I can't even breathe fire...

Skaagenrackner: Oh. A thousand apologies. Was there a psuedo-dragon under there? I thought I felt something extra-gooshy between my toes.

Sparkle: I am, er was not gooshy!

Pecker: You was! SOOO gooshy... I saw... *nods and grins*

Sparkle: Oh, shut it!

Powerpaw: Uh,hey guys? Kitty in a tree here. We go up real good but down iz a problems. Helps?

Bria to flattened Luna and Wolf: Um, I have my limits you know. Did you want us to save up the gold to rez you?

Vardadraug: I think they are part of the landscape now... Maybe they will be a tourist attraction? "Lovers Under Foot?"

Skaagenrackner: I am off to follow Kitrin. Hobbits always know where the best food is.

Bren: Hey, everyone! May I come in now?

Pecker: No! Not unless you brought fish!

Bren: Awww....

Sparkle: Oh no! This means that lazy good-for-nothing Otiorin is in charge of the Wanderers now!

Bria: Hooray! Let's celebrate with a feast! *takes his arm* What's your first order, Otiorin sir?

Powerpaw: *points at himself* Uh, hey! Up here! Can anybody get those guys with the funny hats an' water buckets an' ladders?

"I hear they rescue kitties outta trees...

"It's really high up heres...

"Guys?"

But funny ( :D )

And wow, Cap'n, I haven't thought about that version of Romeo & Juliet in...well, years. I'd forgotten how nice the music was.

Bria: Look, everyone! Even in their flattened, smushed state, Wolf and Luna are still holding hands! How romantic! 8D

*Bria closes her eyes, smiles, and leans into Otiorin's shoulder as they walk arm-in-arm.*

Skaagenrackner: WHAT?! ARE YOU TWO ABOUT TO KISSY-FACE IN MY FOREST?! DID YOU NOT SEE WHAT HAPPENED TO THE OTHER TWO?!

Bria: No, no! *panics* It's O.K.!!

Skaagenrackner: AND WHY IS THAT?!

Bria: It's O.K.!! Um... Because... because... *points a finger at Otiorin* He's gay!

Skaagenrackner: OH! HE'S A FLOWER-PICKER, IS HE? ALL RIGHT THEN... ALL IS WELL. I WILL GO DOWN AND SEE WHAT BRONZE IS FORGING...

Bria: *Quickly and quietly gives her biggest "Please forgive me!" smile to Otiorin.*

Stewart and the Meadowsweets: Um, what's that huge rocky thing coming our way?

Bren: *digging through his backpack* I have fruits and nuts and great little birdy-treats?

Pecker: No! No skanky birdy-treats! Fish forever!

Bren: Hmm. I guess it's time to use that Wilderness Survival skill... *grabs a fishing pole and heads off,*

Powerpaw: *looks down* Guys?

Captain Hesperus sez,

"We must go forth this instant and do this great deed of duty!", he said, loudly, "After all, it is what the Wayfarers are about, helping others, vanquishing evil and other good deeds!"
Ha ha haaaa! I love it! Leave it to Otiorin to go after as many damsels-in-distress as a guy can! =)

Wolf, you've got to see this!

Andersen is incredible! I can't imagine how many takes this took to get this six-minute video right. Wow!

Leonard Wolf, there's your trainer! =)

@All. And at the risk of spamming The Adventurers' Table (not that I think anyone minds...), here are a few updates you should know about:

1. Bren joins the Wanderers. It seems that the Wanderers' are headed to save the girls (Wolf Rawrrr and Killfire, I know you haven't yet posted on the subject, but I'm taking a "leap of faith" here in what I know about your characters. Hope that's all right?). This is a good spot for Kitrin to exit stage left and for Bren to hop on stage with everyone else. For those interested, here's how I have decided to make that happen. Feel free to share any thoughts you may have.

Kaerri and I have been doing a lot of talking about this since she has decided to change characters. Well, mostly it's been me running ideas by her asking for her often-thoughtful opinion (it's her character after all). =)

Bren finally comes across the remnants of Bilal's Menagerie at the first checkpoint along the Road of Kings. There, he meets the Meadowsweets, and being the ever-friendly fellow that he is, is able to parley with them. Seeing him as a good-hearted adventurer, the ever-so-ready-to-gossip hobbits update Bren concerning the Wanderers' doing (and how proud they are of each of them). Then they spot the gray plumes of smoke coming from the forest...

Bren leaves the Adventerers' Wagon and rides up to the hill where the battle took place. On his way up, he runs into Kitrin on her way down.

This happens because the Wanderers' hear Stewart's trumpet being blown. Not in a way meant to alarm, mind, but in a way meant to summon one particular hobbit ("Killer" Kittenpaw comes from a musically-inclined family and would know the song being played over the trumpet - the song basically means, "Hobbit come home"). Kitrin pick ups her armor and heads back down the hill. And that's where she runs into Bren...

Now, hobbits are only known to live in number in Highwind. If you meet them on the road, that's very likely either where they've come from or (more likely) where they're going back to. So, Bren can see Kitrin and think, "Hey, she's likely an ally." Kitrin is the granddaughter of a famous Highwind bard. Bren's old adventuring party is well-known (as is Bren, among adventurers). It's even possible that Kitrin has seen him in Highwind. They are both likely to start up a friendly-like chat upon their meeting.

Bren can explain how he had met the Meadowsweets and was headed up the hill to investigate the nasty-looking plumes of smoke. Kitrin can explain how she had just heard Stewart's trumpet with a signal apparently only meant for her. This next part is a little leap, but I'm willing to make it - Bren can offer Kitrin his warhorse to make best speed down to the Meadowsweets while Bren has only a short walk to the rest of the Wanderers.

In effect, Bren meets the Wanderers, decently-informed and hardly a threat, while Kitrin is neatly tucked away. The horn-song? No alert there. The "emergency" is just her fellow hobbits calling her down for second lunch. That's important stuff, you know!

The big benefit (at least for this storyteller) is that the Wanderers meet Bren under very friendly circumstances, Kitrin is left in a safe-enough place (definitely comfortable-enough!), and the Wanderers can go forth as they will without much interruption. Why do I use the word 'much'? Because I see an interruption in your future, and I think you'll like it (read #2). =)

2. The Wanderers earn their 7th level of experience! Since Kitrin is being taken out of play, I think it's fair that Bren start the game as a 7th-level character too (I've done this sort of thing on the table-top and it feels right). This brings up training...

There are two ways to go with training in most games I play. 1. The characters just happens to learn everything they need to know automatically or 2. The characters meet with people "farther down the road" than they and train (at the cost of a little money, but not time)!

I don't like the first approach. In Real Life, I have learned a heck of a lot of good things from people other than myself. I try to make it a habit. Of course, "learning is the easy part; it's practice that's tough." See? There's one now. =)

So, if folks don't mind, please spend a little gold (here's a rare freebie - remember to loot the minotaurs? =) ) and take the second path (which is far more convenient than what's listed in the Core Book). It goes like this: You basically spend 100 gold pieces per your character level (700 gold each, which you will have), and instead of spending days or weeks training in new techniques, spells, etc., you spend but one day training. I don't make a big deal out of training (unless you want me to RP it - I can do that, too); I just want it to be something that's done in a realistic fashion that isn't inconvenient to everyone. And don't worry - this first time out, I'll provide the trainers (given that you're nowhere near a city).

3. Chapter 4 begins! Chapter 3: Vardadraug and the Cosmic Ore is over 20 pages and it's a good place to draw it to a close. Thanks for the fun, friends! We will continue with Chapter Four: Enlightenment and the Daughters of Summertime. =)

A few NPC additions (and a new picture for one of them) are up. =)

So, when we get to our destination, that's when I can add the two new spells that Luna gets from leveling up? I can go with that.

EDIT: I also posted a roll for my hit points in my character sheet; got lucky and maxed it out. Skill points are allocated, and my two new spells selected. I went with Haste and Ball Lightning. Seeing Powerpaw on the effects of the Haste spell will be quite the show. Finally, I picked up the Feat Extend Spell to double the duration of my spells, such as Mage Armor and Shield, or Displacement and Ball Lightning. I expect that will come in handy.

Off the top of your head, does anyone know the cost for making a scroll? I have the books on PDF, but I'm not sure where I'm looking for this. My plan is to make up a few Haste spells and see if I can sell any once we get to a large enough town to recoup my costs a bit. And a few extra Lightning Bolts at level 7, and a Fireball or two at level 7, too. And a couple of Scorching Ray spells. And some more Displacements. And and and . . .
