Anyway, been doing an awful LOT of reading through pathfinder sites while trying to build my second character (seriously, a couple more chars and I'll be ready to ST next...). And I encountered a phrase that claims item creation feats are basically "selling your feat slots for cash". Now, while I get the general meaning, I was wondering how exactly that works and does it really pay off.


For example crafting of wondrous items, which seems to be most popular. If I understood correctly... You pick an existing item for reference (in terms of stats and resources). Then you have to pay half its cost and spend 1 day for each 1k gold making it. And finally, you sell it for twice as much?


Getting completely creative here: Say you craft Pegasus Boots that make you run really fast. In a shop they are worth 5 000 gp. You have to pay 2 500 gp for the materials, spend 2 and a half days to make them (two 8 hour work days plus 4 more hours on the third), in the end you hopefully confirm that with a Spellcraft roll (which can fail and make the item do nothing or even curse it), and ultimately you can sell your Pegasus Boots for 5 000 gp - that is, ideally, I imagine, as some shops might pay less unless you are an expert barter (Elder Scrolls, anyone? *ripoff*).


Is that about right? Because I just noticed no one is actually using their Profession or Craft, skills that are basically meant to add income. Well, Profession definitely. I understand that being on the road makes it hard to work for a living, but some professions can work like that (like herbalist, brewer etc.) So far we've only been earning money through looting. Not that I object to that, but I long to put all my skills to some use, even the so called "flavor/dump" ones. After all, we've only got like 1.5k gold each and that's basically nothing if I wanted to do real shopping (like for magic items and such, something serious). Are we just gonna wing it and hope that the enemies we're gonna fight happen to be rich?


Not that we haven't picked up a ton of magical loot so far that we can sell... Which IS how most of us earn gold in video RPG games *rawrrr*

I've got something character-related to bring up too. Bren, in an earlier Sharseya game, married a fellow PC, and I've been dragging that along in this one as well since it's the same setting, timeline, etc. However, I'm really starting to feel like I'm "dragging it along" because there's next-to-no chance of his wife's player ever seeing RpN, much less playing, and due to the way unplayed PCs are handled, that means there's an equally small chance of Bren ever seeing his wife in this game. I don't want to play him moping the whole time. :( So far I've just glossed over things, but Dann and I have been talking and I think I'd like to retcon his marriage into a dating relationship that ended (amicably, please!) some time before he entered this game. (No, he's not going to start hitting on Bria! Otiorin can put away those claws.) We haven't sorted all the details because we wanted to run it past you guys first before implementing it.


What do you think?
 
@Wolf Rawrrr Yes, generally in D&D/Pathfinder games, we get money by looting and selling what loot we aren't going to use or don't want. I don't know about prices, but in the past, Dann's shops, particularly in Highwind and other big cities, tend to have a wide variety of items of various prices so there's usually something one can get to upgrade, and frequently something we can't afford yet but can save up for in a couple adventures (assuming it's still there; it isn't always. There are other adventurers in the world!).


Given that we have this lovely wagon to travel in (that's new to me!), we've got a nice stable place to do crafting in on those days when nothing much is going on outside the wagon. We can also take time when we're in the cities for that sort of thing. Professions and crafting can otherwise be hard to fit in if you're walking everywhere or constantly "on mission," but I'm sure we can set aside time here and there for it.

This was my main concern. A whole week. How would that fit into our schedule? I don't think it's been more than two weeks since we started the game! *woof*


How do people usually play it? Do they fast forward alot? Because it doesn't feel like there will be many weeks in our RP lol :P


Do they simply roll every 7 days and add some gold to the inventory?

Well, the characters quite literally haven't had the time to use their Profession skills. Think about it. You guys have had basically 2 days off (in the past 7) from adventuring and that was spent putting the Adventurers' Wanderers' Wagon back into top shape with Stewart and the Meadowsweets. I'm hoping to get you guys on the fast road to Highwind and in that time, you guys can use those skills and feats if you so choose to (Bria certainly does; she's been dying to craft something. You guys have also seen Sherwood's post concerning Luna's Feat swap to Craft Wondrous Item.

@Captain Hesperus[/URL] - you want help with anything?).
As for how other campaigns do it, once the party agrees, yes they fast-forward quite a lot (especially when crafting). Of course, getting an entire party to agree on things can be a mission in itself. =)


Still, the name of the game is adventure. Are you adventurers or are you merchants (edit: someone's going to think of a joke here, I bet)? You want loot? Get your buns to Highwind and take on a dungeon. They're dangerous, but they're worth it (right, Kaerri?). =)


In other news (before I forget), I've added Spark cantrip to our spell line-up. I have disallowed Burning Arc.


When it comes to the Wanderers' state of magical items, this is one of the primary reasons I just grabbed and Railroaded you guys this week. Friends, there are magical items you have coming to you that (at least in Powerpaw's case) I've been "holding" for a year now! Some of these items you're not aware of, but some you are. A few are going to come as a surprise. Going back to the Dubble Trubble fight, Powerpaw was actively sharing his loot with you guys and you were turning it down (and you had your reasons; he's going for another try here, though. He likes sharing with people he gives a damn about - like the Wanderers).


On the subject of looting, if memory serves, during the fights you had with the Bloodland Minotaurs, it was Powerpaw alone that was making a serious point of looting enemies for gear. You guys left behind some goodies there, but you also took with you what you thought to with the help of that "Insane Felane." =)


Something similar happened during the gnoll fight. There was a handful of magical gear left on the battlefield without so much as a Detect Magic spell cast by you guys to look for it (and that was prior to the Prismalcum comet coming down). I'm not saying you guys left behind a king's ransom; I'm just saying if you want gear, go looking for it.


Remember the fight with the Craven? After the fight, who remembered to loot the ogres you killed?


Sometimes (and like most things, I mean this good-naturedly) I feel like I'm chasing you guys down to give you gear that you earned. If you don't want it, that's fine, but... you might want it later down the road (if only to sell for coin). I'm very happy that you chose to rescue Powerpaw early on (because looting sometimes slips Bria's mind). You know your warrior-kitty - he wants MOAR!! =)


So... cast those Detect Magic spells after a fight. Search and loot. Collect the mundane gear (you've got an uber-leet Super Wagon to carry it in, unlike every other party I've DMed in Sharseya! Ha ha!) Examine interesting items. You never know what you'll find. That's what those Bags of Holding of yours are for, right?

And about the looting thing, now that you've explained it it does seem you are correct. I dunno about the others, but my excuse is that I actually don't really like picking up swords and armor pieces off of every dead enemy just to sell them in the next shop for cash. It kinda feels... Odd. Unrealistic. I mean, no one would do that in reality, even if they did have bags of holding.


... OK, maybe with the bags of holding, some would. Lol. Just wanted to say that's why I didn't develop the looting habit. And that's why I keep forgetting. I had Wolf pick up almost exclusively stuff that he intended to use or needed for some purpose.

That kinda reminds me of a Robotech game I ran for my tabletop group dealing with a mutiny on the ship. I had no idea what route that they would take, so I made plans for both them going with the mutiny and working against it.


Just remember, the best laid plans of Storytellers goes to pot when it meets the players.
 
Right. No point in a DM like me planning; I'm happier when I'm just going with the story and seeing where it takes us.


Going back to what Kaerri was talking about, I'm all for this. It's not fair to Bren (or his player). Plus we've held on to this for quite some time and... it really does feel like we're dragging it around. Talk about Real Life cutting in. What are we supposed to say if, say, one of you guys got a real interest in Bren's family background?
 
That is one of the problems with pulling in a character from another campaign into a new bunch of characters; there is history that the whole group does not share.


I have no issues with making some adjustments to Bren's background. You are a fair storyteller, and I have no reason to suspect that you will be doing anything unfair to the rest of the party. Its not like there has been a storyline revolving around Bren's wife, and since it sounds like that player is not going to be joining us any time soon, lets make the change.

Yep, I'm a funny one that way. :D I actually prefer games that have set stories that I settle my characters into, rather than being one of the ones to co-write the story; it might come from early-life "RP" in which I wrote a character into some published work I was very fond of.

In fairness, there was probably supposed to be some kind of monster anyway. We were, after all, in a dungeon-like setting. Bugbears were just fun. :D And they were as surprised to be there as we (well, our characters) were to see them!

Yes, sorry. That's why I wanted everyone's OK before I brought him in. I just didn't think far enough ahead regarding this particular matter.

Subject: Winter-time character sheet "cleaning"! =)


Not to derail Kaerri's concern with Bren here (I would still like to have Wolf and Cap'n's thoughts on this), but I was looking at your character sheets earlier this morning and I came to a conclusion - they need updating (some more than others)! =)


Please double-check and update the following:


1. Check your coin. I remember you traded with Travis's Trainers to the tune of 2,822 gold pieces each (back in Adventurers' Table Entry #1052). Then, if memory serves, each of you spent 700 gold pieces to train (except for Otiorin who was charged half). A few items were purchased from their stores (including Luna's chess set).


2. Check your items. Like the "bauble" Otiorin snatched and the Wayfarer's Cudgel. These new items you guys are about to see in-game. Update your character sheets with this information.


3. Under Feats, tell me where each Feat comes from. For example: "Improved Initiative (Human Bonus Feat)" or the like. Kaerri's Feat tab for Bren shows a good example of how to provide this information.


Doing all this keeps things tidy and makes your DM's life a bit easier (especially when I'm designing adventures and encounters). As usual, toss any questions you have my way. =)


Time for some cleaning! Here are some "little dustballs" I've noticed:

- Looks like Otiorin is still 7th level? Want any help here? That information you posted in Entry #2496 (page 100) looks great. If Real Life has you too busy, do you want me go in there and do it for you?


- The Moonlit Edge is now a Short Sword of Frost +3 with Light on Command (d6+3 damage plus d6 Frost damage on a successful hit.


- Both of his Signature Abilities? I remember we agreed on one (don't know where we did, though. In Conversation?).


- I highly recommend making a note somewhere for monsters ol' Rin has correctly identified. Otherwise, you're rolling Knowledge: (Fill in the blank) every time you encounter it when you don't need to. See Kaerri's character sheet (with Bren, Skills tab) if you want a good example.


I know I'm forgetting a couple of things... I posted them elsewhere for, but I've forgotten where (and I can't find it). Hmm.






- I love that whole Stats tab you drew up! Very little guessing as to what means what, and everything you need is there. It's like one-stop shopping in another country that uses English as its first language! 8D


- Please change Highwind Constable Medallion to Highwind Count Medallion (in your Feats and Gear tabs).


- Under Gear, there is a +2 composite longbow (non-magical). That throws me off every time I see it. Would you mind writing something like "composite longbow (adds +2 STR damage, non-magical)?


- Please make a note under Bren's shield that it's currently shaped like a taco (has the Broken condition)? Hee hee. =)


- Change Bren's wedding ring (in Gear) to Bren's House Sarabina Signet Ring or something similar?


- Under the Mount tab, would you please put something in there showing that's Star? He's asking (and he's in a huff about it. I keep getting little jabs like, "That's not just any warhorse! That's me! I earned that!"). =)


Otherwise, looks great, Darlin'! =)






- Thanks for updating your character sheet earlier today!


- Luna's Appraise skill has the Class Skill bonus added to the total. Per Pathfinder CRB (Core Rulebook) "You gain a +3 bonus on all class skills that you put ranks into." So, no ranks means no Class Skill bonus. Please adjust?


- Under Languages Known, please put (2 language slots yet unchosen) or something similar?


- Love how you've set your Spells up. Can't wait to see that Elemental Wall ability put to good use. =)

I like your character sheet because it's the most-colorful of the bunch. Plus I think it's cool-looking. =)


- Leonard's Initiative Bonus should now be +8 (as his Dexterity has recently been upped to 18. =)


- Under human notes (Overview tab), did you also want to add the bonus Feat humans get at 1st level or the +2 to any one Ability Score? This one's less of a fix and more of a "Hey, did you want to?"


- We've still got to figure out your second Signature Ability. You mentioned you were recently inspired with ideas?


- Leonard has 3,185 gold pieces. Is he really carrying over 3,000 coins in his Bag of Holding? You may recall I introduced a tabletop favorite, the Mithril Coin. Did you want to use those instead and save Leonard some baggage? If not, hey, I understand. Fill up his tub with those gold coins and bathe in splendor! =)


And that's all I can see there. Nice.

Bugbears... Bugbears... Hm. That reminds me of something I read earlier today. I was looking at some funny stories come from unusually lucky bluff rolls.


There's more than just bugbears and there's a chance you've read this before but in case you haven't, some are pretty fun to read lol *woof*

"Lets be honest, while many gamers overlook the 'charisma trio', they can lead to some of the greatest moments.


For example: my group is currently running Rise of the Runelords. We've just gotten to Thistletop and, after ignoring the entire first floor of the citadel, we proceeded down to B1, where our monk found himself outside the door to the harem, where the bugbear was in the middle of a tryst. He kicks the door open, catching the thing unarmed and unarmored. He then proceeds to Nat20 his intimidate check, scaring the shit out of the harlots and freezing the bugbear. (No I don't remember the thing's name.) Claiming himself a hero of Sandpoint, he demands the creature submit to his rule.


What follows is the most bullshit round of bluff and diplomacy checks that stall for enough time to get the rest of the party into the room. By this time, we've all hedged the thing in against the wall, separating him from his weapons. Our wizards' trigger finger gets a bit itchy and he decides to end the parley with a scorching ray. Which misses. And knocks the bugbear's flail into an adjacent square.


We then roll initiatives, leaving the bugbear last. My alchemist uses his bomb's splash damage to one hit the four goblins cowering in the back corner while the others kill the bugbear in one round.


TL;DR: Nat 20 intimidation causes a bugbear to drop his pants and leads to death in six seconds"





"So, in a recent adventure (Also RotRL oddly, but much later in the campaign) I had one of my players do something fairly insane which included an impressive bluff check.


So.. some background. My guys were at the bottom of a cave system inhabited by stone giants, most of whom they had snuck past. They then discover that they are being scryed by the BBEG and can no longer safely rest for spells. They also realize that a major giant NPC who helped them is now in danger and must be saved. Unfortunately she is on the upper level, past a whole bunch of Giants. Wizard decides he is going to do something insane and try to save her. The rest of the group ports out except him, and the groups druid who is currently in the shape of a Leshy Fungus. So the Fungus / Druid climbs up onto the Wizards back as he casts Haste, Expeditious Retreat, and Invisibility on himself and takes off like a bat out of hell.


His run takes him past four sleeping Giants without waking them, and through a few other obstacles with out issue. Then, somewhat lost, he sprints out into a communal mead hall with five drinking giants scattered around the room. In fact, he ends his movement directly adjacent to a great big mean Stonegiant. Now... the wizard himself is invisible, leaving the druid looking like a small floating toothy mushroom covered in eyes. Thinking quickly, the wizard whispers in Giantish "You know, when you start seeing things like this, you have probably been drinking too much." The Leshy / Druid then grinned and waved. I gave him a bluff check which he beat by fifteen points, so the giant shook his head and threw away his mug, and the Wizard continued on his way."





"Homebrew Pathfinder campaign, Pathfinder Inner Sea setting. The party of 5th level characters finally makes it into the sewers. If all went according to plan, the evil demon cultists would open a gate directly under the palace and doom the entire country to fiery death and slavery.


Well, the characters manage to kill the cultists... not knowing that was exactly what needed to happen to open the gate. Only one of the remaining cultists didn't die inside the ritual circle. So, I gave them an out. Instead of a full on open door to the demons' home plane, I summoned one demon. An EPIC BADASS DEMON.


The android wizard in the party made his Knowledge (arcana) check and quickly peed on himself. The party was not supposed to be able to kill the demon I put in front of them, nor did I intend the players to even attempt such a thing. After I got past the incredulous looks from the players and not more than one "WTF, dude?" I let the demon get a word in edgewise:


"WHO DARES SUMMON ME TO THIS PLANE?" the demon asked.


Again, the android wizard comes to the rescue and blurts out the name of the BBEG the campaign is supposed to be centered around. The players burst into happy laughter; I told the player to make his Bluff check.


He rolled high, but this demon did have a high Sense Motive skill modifier. Here I was, thinking the demon was going to easily smash the Sense Motive DC, laugh, and squish the android where he stood.


And I rolled a natural 1 on the die. I announced it to the group, shook my head, and called for a 5-minute break to rework the plot points of my campaign. The demon looked down to the convincing tin man and asked for the BBEG's location; the android gave it. The demon teleported to the BBEG and left the party alone.


TL;DR: Epic badass gets sent to kill campaign BBEG. DM /facepalms."





"The party had to travel through the sewers to find a treasure room. One of the tunnels was blocked by a multitenticled abomination that demanded that we feed it.


The Bard managed to let the party pass through by offering to make it waffles. With fruit and cream. Rolls 37 on Diplomacy and immediately begins taking out ingredients. The party makes a makeshift campfire out of torches. Bard rolls Profession-Chef to make waffles; rolls a 28 and has enough to feed the monster and the party. This satisfies the sewer monster and it warns the party of non-tasty carnivorous plants in the tunnels ahead. That bit of advice was extremely helpful as we encountered a whole tunnel of intelligent carnivorous vines with teeth.


The Bard apparently knows Sylvan and tries to negotiate passage through the plants as the party Druid fails to do so.


Bard rolls somewhere in the low 30's and succeeds by flattering the man-eating plants about their teeth."





"I'm running Wrath of the Righteous, so minor spoilers for the first adventure of that here.


The party has recently emerged from beneath the city and are struggling to deal with the destruction of Kenabres. The first thing on everyone's mind is to try and make their way to their friends and family and see if they are okay.


Now, our paladin of Sarenrae is a bit of an oddball. She's an aasimar, and rolled the random ability (replacing daylight) to speak with horses, which the player was amused by and built a fair bit of her character around it. She also has the Touched by Divinity trait, and I worked with her to have Mistmorning, a unicorn-slash-blade holy servant of Sarenrae, appear in them. Anyway, she has a beloved pet horse that she had left behind at her church's stables and was frantic to make sure that he was okay.


The party made their way to the Church of Sarenrae and heard screaming as they approached. Arriving on the scene, they see a crowd of crusaders on the steps of the temple watching another wild-eyed crusader stand over a sobbing and pleading young teenage girl. Naturally, the party demands to know what's going on, particularly having dealt with various demon cultists that are masquerading as crusaders, and find they're open to talking. The leader claims that striking down a pure virginal girl with a particular sacred blade will transform it into a demon-slaying sword. Tears came to her eyes as she explained that she would be the one to shoulder the sin of murdering an innocent for eternity, but this was certainly the only way for them to stand a chance against the demonic hordes. The party's knowledge checks reveal they've never heard of anything like that, and it sounds kind of bogus to them, but they also don't detect any evil or malice either... just misguided and desperate people willing to do whatever it takes.


(The teenage girl did try and point out at this point that she, er, wasn't, exactly, you know, a virgin, or anything... but the crazy crusaders didn't hear her, apparently.)


So the party is nervous about this and don't want to see the girl slayed in cold blood, and it looks like there might be combat, but then the paladin steps up. She tells them in a long speech that there is no such story of sanctifying blades like that and she, as a divine servant of Sarenrae, will take upon the weight of saving the city and the world from demonkind. She raises Radiance, a legendary artefact blade, and causes its light to shine, declaring that she already has a holy blade that can slay any demon, and that they should stand down from this madness.


And she rolls a natural 20 here, of course. The DC in the book is something ridiculous and she manages to actually surpass it. The crazy crusaders 100% believe her to be the second coming of Sarenrae on this mortal plane and they immediately drop their weapons and fall to their feet before her. They swear their allegiance to her and her cause and apologise profusely for almost slaying the girl. And then they demand to know what she wants them to do from here. "We'll do anything you say. Anything."


... The paladin's kind of creeped out by how obsessive they are, and how quickly she apparently had developed a cult (her fanclub, as we often call it). So she tells them that their first mission is to repair the church of Sarenrae, and, uh, she'd, y'know, get back to them later with what else she wanted them to do...


She hasn't been back yet, although they shall be making an appearance in the next adventure as part of the army... a fiercely and kinda creepily obsessively devoted retinue under her command. If she ever takes Leadership, well... I know exactly who her followers are going to be :) "

Well 3,185 gp weighs 63,7 lb. He sure as hell ain't gonna keep it in his pockets... *woof*


On a more serious note, I will remedy my sheet when I can (gonna get some long overdue sleep now).
 
Thanks, Sherwood! 'Preciate cha! EDIT: Whoops. Sherwood, Luna hasn't swapped that Rapid Reload feat for the Craft Wand just yet. Remember the 8 hours a day of intense training for 5 days (not to mention the gold cost)?


Wolf (when you return from your well-deserved sleep), I just love those stories. The demon story was my favorite. It's true - anybody can roll a 1. That's part of the fun; you never know what they dice are going to do (and they always have a say).


Where'd you get those stories? I could easily read more. =)
 
Oh, and Sherwood? Luna owns 1,855 gold pieces. Did she want to use Mithril Coins to lighten her load?
