At the Adventurers' Table: Chapter Eleven

When his turn eventually comes around, Bren intends to go straight to the horses and use his speak-with-equines ability and Handle Animal skill to try calming them down.

With Oreleth's announcement that we are dealing with a stone golem, can I try a Knowledge: Spellcraft roll to see what magics I have that might work on it?

I am guessing you mean Knowledge: Arcana?

Knowledge: Monster Lore might serve Luna even better than Knowledge: Arcana as it's more specialized. Take your pick and roll here. =)

Thank you. Monster Lore roll coming up.

Edit: With that roll, I might be lucky to have heard of a Golem, let alone what spells might work on it! lol

Uh, you rolled a one there, Sherwood - a possible fumble. Roll another d20, please (straight roll - no modifiers).

Whew! Glad you didn't fumble there, bud.

So, gang... between these roles and the roles in Robotech: Broadsword, I would say this dice roller is out to get everyone. I hope it rolls better for you soon. =)

It is Nivi's turn to act, Wolf! May the dice be nice to you! =)

Personally, I know that Luna doesn't have any spells that can affect it, but we will have to see what Luna knows (or think she knows lol).

Well put, oh-laser-pointer-slaying-chainmail-clad-kitty-face. =)

Now let's resolve Luna's Knowledge: Arcana findings. Roll, please. =)

That I can do. Knowledge: Arcana coming up.

Yeaa! I didn't roll another '1'! Perhaps Luna will know not to waste her magic on it.

What happens if one "fumbles" a knowledge roll? You make it out to sound bad, but wouldn't it just mean that you don't know anything about that specific thing?

Actually, if you just plain fail, that's when you just don't know anything.

Fumbling or botching is worse than a simple fail; in knowledge rolls it means your character believes something that isn't true about whatever you were rolling on. Bren botched a monster lore check on Drow once, and to this day believes they love hobbits and would never do anything to harm them (totally not true, Drow as a race are evil towards everyone, each other included).

Ahhh, right, right, I completely overlooked that. Goes to show that things can always get worse! *woof*

I'll try to figure out Nivirea's next move today. Sorry for the quiet.

Wait, shouldn't I roll a Knowledge check for Nivirea, then, as well? I see now that I don't even have Monster listed, so I guess I don't have any bonuses there. What does it scale with anyway? It's a custom skill based on something else, if I recall. Maybe I should roll both to see about this Golem thingy.

edit: Wow, at least I know I've heard of golems, unlike... some people :P*rrrrrr*

Wolf. As the rules go, if you want Nivi to possibly benefit from Oreleth's warning, then yes, a Knowledge: Arcana roll is called for. Just as Psychie and Sherwood have declared intentions for their characters, so too can you for yours.

Some skills in Pathfinder take an action to perform while others do not. Oreleth using her Perception to get a good look at the oncoming creature beyond your immediate situation with the horses takes an action. Her attempt to identify the creature she is spotted does not, nor does it take an action from Luna or Nivi to identify what a Stone Golem is, even given their stressful circumstances.

As for Knowledge: Monster Lore, that is its own area of knowledge, separate and distinct from the other Knowledge skills out there.

I will post the results and continue with the story when Real Life allows. =)

Noted. I suppose Nivirea is spending her "turn" in examination, then *woof*

I can't rightly decide what to do until I know what she knows.

Nivirea does not have to; I allowed Luna to cast a spell and use two skills (the kind that can be used in such a fashion). It is up to you though.

I will attempt to post tomorrow.

O.K. First off, I wanted to post something more imaginative than this but right now another one of my ADHD-related migraines is... interfering with that so... allow me to keep the game going with this information for Wolf and Sherwood.

1. Wolf Rawrrr Wolf Rawrrr , Nivirea does not get a Knowledge: Monster Lore roll since she has no ranks in it (some "Trained-only" skills in Pathfinder require ranks to make a skill roll and this is one of them).

2. For the sake of gaming ease, I am going to say that, all of the Wayfaring Wanderers see the approaching "super stone golem" coming down the street. They notice it this early solely because Oreleth points it out. In having doing so, she has bought the team time. The golem is about 250 feet away and plodding along slowly, but with great strides (at about 40 feet/round). Receding crowds of people are frantically running out of its way and yelling for help.

It is coming right at you and it looks like this:

3. However, Nivirea and Luna both succeed in their Knowledge: Arcana roll (with a 22 and 28 respectively). You are welcome to record the following information on your character sheets (so the next time stone golems come up, you don't have to roll again but use what your characters have thus far learned. I recommend doing so using a spoiler).

3a. With a skill result of 22, Nivirea's studies have taught her that a stone golem is a mindless construct created by arcane means (usually Wizard or Sorcerer but not Bard). They are very costly to create. Such constructs obey simple commands from their master ("Stop," "Go," "Attack," etc.). They are often used as guardians. They are immune to attacks by normal weapons; it requires a +2 or better weapon to damage a typical stone golem. While golems are immune to most spells, there are some spells that affect them. Nivirea is not sure what they are. That said, Nivirea is perfectly aware that her spells still have their effects on things around the Stone Golem (for example, if she casts Invisibility on the golem's target, that is an effect the golem is "subject to" since, as far as Nivirea knows, golems cannot see the invisible).

3b. Stone golems are typically 9 feet tall, perhaps 9 1/2 feet at their tallest, not the size of a damn giant (in other words, they are supposed to be Large sized, not Huge like this one). This thing is about 18 feet tall!

4. Luna, with her considerable 10 Ranks of Knowledge: Arcana and her result of 28, understands all this and more. Relevant data includes the following:

4a. While Nivirea is unsure, Luna is certain all golems cannot see the invisible unless specially modified (very rare given the cost). A Rock to Mud spell slows a stone golem, a Mud to Rock spell restores all damage dealt to the thing, and a Stone to Flesh spell makes it vulnerable to normal attacks for one round on the following round after that spell is cast upon it.

4b. Every other melee round, a typical stone golem can cast a Slow spell against opponents at short (melee) range.

4c. There are very rare and very costly (there's that word again) magical items in Sharseya that are designed to specifically command these automotons, or in some cases, might work to take away command from a golem's master. Luna has never seen one, but she has read convincing tales from reputable sources of one wizard literally stealing command of another wizard's stone golem through some kind of purely mental contest.

4d. Golems cannot be outsmarted or tricked in social ways as they do not communicate with any creature save for its master, unless instructed by that master. This means there is no reasoning with this thing. Golems do exactly as commanded until destroyed or instructed differently by their masters. There are tales of golems fulfilling duties to masters long-dead because there is no known way to get the mindless things to do otherwise.

4e. For these reasons, golems, basically don't have an alignment (though they are listed as "Neutral," they do not make their own decisions). Luna has never heard of an independent or intelligent golem.

Wolf, Nivirea is free to move, cast, or whatever she can reasonably do in one round. =)

Its a shame that none of my spells will work on this thing, assuming that it is going to be a threat to us or others. I can make the rest of the party a bit buffed up with Displacement and Blur spells, along with a Haste or two to help counter the Slow effect of the golem.

I do have a scroll of Flame Arrow that can help out Oreleth with her bow; I just need an action to cast it (along with my other spells to help out the party). Good thing that I can have Sparkle deliver a touch-ranged spell as if I were there myself.

So you want Sparkle to get within melee distance of that thing?

Also, as before mentioned, the stone golem's immunities cannot help it on spells you cast on other things. =)

Not in melee, but to be able to deliver a spell (or spells) to my friends before they are in hand to hand combat, assuming that Luna herself is not able to get close enough in time to place a spell on those that need it most.

Oh, you mean to your party! O.K. Good deal. =)

Yeppers. I have plans to use Displacement on Powerpaw, Blur on Bren, and Flame Arrow on Oreleth's ammo. I also have a Haste spell memorized, and a couple of Haste scrolls ready to go to counter the Slow spell effect from the golem.

Is the golem attacking anything, or is it "just" moving down the street? I know people are running and screaming, but as experienced adventurers, can we tell if the golem really is a threat or is just perceived to be one by people (and animals) who don't know any better?

It is plodding down the street in the direction of the horses and wagon. Plodding intently.
