If possible, I'd like to reserve one of the scientist roles (I'm thinking an archaeologist which draws upon both of social sciences {i.e. some linguistics, ethnology, history, art history} and traditional sciences {geography, geology, physics, chemistry, paleo sciences, and some biology}). I think an archaeologist would be a good fit for an expeditionary group.

Mmm I don't think so. A botanist and/or biologist would be very useful. A botanist/biologist have a much more in depth knowledge of plants and animals than any one else, and the character would be much more interested in studying the new biota the characters would be discovering. @Stickdom and @khuyen characters aren't going to be experts on the new biota and are less interested in discovering their scientific properties beyond their usefulness (i.e medicinal properties) (also if I'm inferring too much about your characters, feel free to correct me) for the groups survival. As a botanist/biologist, the character would be actively searching for, researching, and recording data about plants and animals that don't exist in the known world. Their objective on this expedition would be less about the groups survival (although their discoveries would probably benefit the group from time to time) leaving that to the captain, medic, hunter, guards etc, and more about the pursuit of science. They would be as interested in a plant that could cure any disease as one that has no known use beyond the fact that it can eat animals . . . whole! Also my character (if accepted) will hardly have as much knowledge of botany/biology and is more concerned about their impacts on cultures and societies of the area. Anyways, that's just my take on what a botanist/biologist would contribute to the group.

No problem! Glad to help. Of course if you don't feel like playing a botanist/biologist and would prefer to be some other sort of scientist (physicist/engineer, etc) it wouldn't be a stretch to have botany and biology included in an archaeologists knowledge base.

Also, you make a good point. My character isn't going too be too concerned with a plant or animal beyond the range of "can we safely eat it?", but any other insights a botanist/biologist could give would be most beneficial to the party to ascertain whether or not it's a good idea to KEEP eating said plant/animal, or even find a better use for it (plant makes a better lamp fuel than a meal, etc.). So, by all means, a biologist or botanist would not be wasted at all, they would actually be part of the core leadership of the team as far as making scientific decisions and determining where to go next based on our environments.
