Fantasy Aether: The Age of Light OOC [being rebooted]

i'll probably work on some type of random post just as an excuse to put Aurora back in the RP. it might be a little different but that's all up to what i ultimately decide on posting.

So, how long ago exactly was the fall of Magruhdul? I originally thought it was something outside of living memory, but then it came to light that Ulfric, who's only in his 60's, fought in the Ash War that followed the city's fall. That makes me think it happened within the last 100 years or so, not nearly as long ago as I originally believed.

I ask because I'm toying with the idea of saying Hogan was born and raised in Magruhdul during its last days, so I want to make sure I have the timing straight.

The timeline is a bit vague intentionally so that it could be adjusted if we needed to. Magruhdul fell around 150-200 years ago, Ash Wars were around 20-25 years ago.

So he could have been a very young child/baby at the time.

From Ulfric's CS:
...After being promoted to a full Paladin himself at 22, Ulfric found he had little time to enjoy his new found role - the Dwarven city of Magruhdul had fallen to Orcs a decade previous, and Aether was eventually plunged into war against this new threat...

From the dwarf lore:
With the fall of Magruhdul, the Eastern side of Aether became an inhospitable place for Humans and Elves, who had once traveled the area at Leisure. The Orc tribes defended their new home with an unknown savagery and it was not long before an army was raised to take back Magruhdul from the invaders.

These things lead me to believe the Ash Wars didn't take place very long after the capital's fall. Within five or ten years, at least. If we stay consistent with all this, given Ulfric's age, the fall would've had to happen around 50 or 60 years ago with the Ash War following within the decade so that Ulfric is 22 when the fall is 10 years old.

Yeah I'll have to adjust that. It happened longer ago than that.

Actually Wait.

Fall of Magrudul happened before the retreat of the Lumen, and was a factor in that diplomatic break down of events.

Let me make a quick timeline.

I think the easiest change to make would be to say the Ash Wars lasted a long time rather than a quick and bloody war. You might say the fall happened around 100-120 years in the past so that most people alive now, even dwarves, would never have seen the capital. The Ash War started soon after and Ulfric, around 40-60 years later as a young paladin, joined on the tail end of the conflict to see its conclusion.

This works for me as well, because I want to have Hogan live there for the first 20 or 30 years of his life and then leave for Alcamoth before the actual fall happens.

Issue is, the fall was also something that contributed to the retreat of the Lumen as they lost allies in both the West and East. And they've been gone for at least 2-3 centuries.

So something like this?

0 A.C (After Cinder)- Conclusion of the War of Cinders, Kolaghan destroyed, Church established as dominant power.

400 A.C - Fall of Magruhdul

450 A.C Retreat of the Lumen

660-970 AC - The Ash Wars

1000 A.C - Present Day

That changes the nature of the Ash Wars a little bit. It seemed initially to be a desperate attempt by the united forces of Aether to oust invaders from a recently fallen major city.

If it happened so long after that Ulfric took part, there must have been several hundred years of relative peace--or at least non-aggression--and then a sudden bout of aggression from either the Orcs, seeking to expand, or the church/crown, deciding to finally do something after so long for whatever reason, caused the Ash Wars.

It could be adjusted to simply be a "cold" war with occasional conflicts over time, but only really boiled over when the Church decided to finally get involved.

Nah, I'm good. It seems to make sense. Raises questions how the conflict escalated slowly over the centuries and also why the Church only decided to get involved after so much time passed.

Oooh, Dwarf lore? What're we discussing for it?

Also I wasn't aware the Ash Wars were so recent, Belegor and his father likely fought in them
