"Become a god?" Karlisle looked confused. Very seldom had he ever been this close to a demon.

"that's not possible."

"Oh its....quite possible."

Karma looked at him and almost laughed aloud. She could slit his throat here and now and become a god in minutes....so why wouldn't she do it?

"Demons can become gods if they do...certain things they're told. But only if you're chosen."

"I feel like I should be surprised by this."

Karlisle stood from his crouch- and walked away somewhat from his stationary position.

"what makes you think any of its true?"

"Because I've seen it."

Karma did not turn to watch him walk away, and remained staring blankly at the water. Why was she talking to him like this? They weren't friends.

She stopped thinking.

"I've met gods. I've seen what they do. It's just a reward system. If we listen, we are rewarded into the next step beyond being a demon for the rest of our lives." Karma paused, hesitant to continue, "Becoming a god means freedom from hell. It means you can visit anywhere in the next life, even purgatory, and stay there. It means I could come down here and be a human for as long as I wanted," she looked over her shoulder towards Karlisle, "if I so chose."

"If you chose— they make it sound so easy and rewarding." Karlisle laughed slightly to himself as he kept walking away. "Where's the catch Karma?" He stopped and turned slightly back towards her. He let the air between them settle for a moment. "If they can give you those powers, what makes you think that they won't just as easily take them away from you?"

He turned back to the exit that led to the main street and kept walking.

"Karma?..." Karlisle stopped once more, but didn't turn around this time. "Remember."

The words fell hard on the air—

He continued walking.

He had a point but.....still

"Remember what?" She huffed, feeling herself shift further towards the water. "And how do you know my name?"

Karma smiled to herself a bit, liking the answer he retaliated with. She looked to the water again.

With a deep breath she dropped off the edge of the bridge into the black water below.

His ears pricked up at the sound of the splashing water- jerking his head around, Karlise saw the empty under bridge where Karma had been sitting only seconds earlier and now where she was- sinking into the black waves.

Without hesitation he ripped off his coat and ran over to edge, diving head first in after Karma.

Cold.

Black.

Wet.

Completely immersed- Karlisle let his arms reach out deeply in front of him, searching for any part of Karma.

Blackness enveloped his sight- but thank god that her hair was starch white.

There she was. His vision blurred but he could see her–

He grappled her arm and with a heave, he tugged her behind him and shot up towards the surface.

He broke the surface.

Gasping for air- he felt her heavy head rest in his back. He knew he didn't have much time left- he quickly paddled over to the shoreline. Lifting her soaked body out of the water, he urgently walked over to the grass and laid her down.

Propping her head up- he pinched her nose shut and begun resuscitating her.

"Come on! Come on! Cough damnit!"

It was worth blackout

Sputtering and coughing an extension of air and water, karma opened her lips to gasp in a few long strands of air, and to her dismay, more life.

She didn't open here eyes, cringing at how drenched she was. But this was it. This was how it had to work.

She sighed, then slowly opened her eyes to reveal a single tear drip past her cheek. karma clenched her teeth and stared up at the boy holding to her.

"W-Wll aren't you the hero....to the demon that wants to go back to hell."

"I thought you wanted to be a god?"

Karlisle smirked. He was suddenly aware of his hand and how it was supporting her head, he felt her hair, he felt the weight, he saw her eyes. Fiery ruby crimson- what lie behind them? Was it more than she let on, or even more than she knew?

He'd seen these eyes before. He searched the familiar strokes that color those irises. Memories flooded his mind- raced, rushed through his veins. He felt a tear escaped his eye...

"Uh..."

Karma watched the tear fall from his eye and stared in awe and wonder. An actual tear. A human tear....why was he crying? The way he stared at her, the way he held her, stroked his fingers through her hair....what wasn't he saying?

She stopped.

"Y-You knew me. You knew me when I was alive."

"...." damnit... damnit... Karlisle shut his eyes tightly and bit his lip. One more tear slipped away without permission.

"Y-yes I did..."

Oh my god

Karma froze, sitting up and staring blankly still. She couldn't think of what to say.

Is he lying? He has no reason to lie. Look at the guy crying right in front of you! You think he's going to lie about shit like this?

"How do you know me," she demanded in a hushed, frightened tone. She asked but she wasn't sure she wanted to know.

Questions flooded her mind, and he didn't answer her fast enough for her lack of patience, her hand flinging to snag Karlisle's shirt collar and pull him towards her, "How the hell do you know me?!"

— why are you doing this to me. She was gone. She was gone! I watched her die. I held her in these arms and watched the life leave her eyes, I watched her soul dissipate into thin air- why her, why now, why this way. After everything we'd been through, and how I failed to save her- how can you do this to me. I never asked for these gifts, for this life, this longing- and yet now this is how I am repaid. Have I not done all you've asked? Have I not done everything you have required me to do.... —

He stared into her eyes deeply one more time- his hands in a rush of emotion cupped the back of her head, and in one single motion he disarmed her and planted exactly what he knew he should not...

Her natural reaction was to push the boy away.....but she couldn't.

His kiss hit her like a tornadic wind, sending a shiver up through her spine and a shock into her veins. Suddenly....it clicked.

Pictures.

Colors.

Everything.

Blue eyes falling. Water black as pitch swallowing something indistiguishable whole in its clutch. Her heart started skipping more and more beats until she wasn't sure she had one anymore. Hands holding onto each other, smiles following not far behind. Laughter echoing through her head like music.....loud, vicious music unwelcome in a dark soul's mind. It hurt. The happiness and feel of tenderness hurt too much to bare.

She just started to see flashes of this boy and her embracing with smiles as bright as the sky before she broke away.

Karma flew her hands to the boy's chest and shifted backwards, hands on the cement and feet scooting her away.

"N-No.....It's not-it's not possible. I don't know you!"

Karlisle remained still- his eyes pressed shut, now with more tears streaming down his red flushed skin. Knees folded and his head lowered, Karlisle felt his heart racing faster then it had in an age.

"Now you do."

He opened his piercing eyes- flushed and swelling in chilling syncopations. Hell would freeze over with his biting glance. Through heavy tears, he set his gaze upon her.

"NO."

Karma stood to her feet and lunged at Karlisle, throwing her weight suddenly atop him and throwing his arms to his side. Her pale fingers clutched to the boy's throat, the demonic side of her boiling over and bringing her strength to a level even she didn't comprehend. Her palms thrust relentlessly against the boy's throat, thumbs pressing deep into his adam's apple and nails digging into his fragile skin. She was going to end this.

She buckled her knees against his and twisted her ankles to pin his down beneath her. She could feel his neck tense against her hands and she remembered who she really was. A demon. A killer.

A living sin.

She started smiling

Motionless. Apathy and peace filled his body. He couldn't feel her hand presently growing and grasping tighter and harder.

He didn't care if he died in this moment-

He didn't care about anything else but her. He knew she remember- he knew she saw everything. He knew he was going to die, and it would be for her.

He opened his eyes once more and stared into her being-

"...I love you-"

He shut his eyes.

"I love you-"

Karma shut her eyes and screamed into the air, stale and petrified in the air that grew dark with nighttime. The voice inside her shot into a pain throughout her stomach and every muscle holding the boy to the ground. Her teeth grit against each other as her hands slipped carefully from around the boy's neck to being against her chest. More colors flashed past in the black within the mysterious darkness behind her eyelids.

Pictures of them with their lips touching.

Sights of her sobbing in his arms like a lost child.

Scenes of him on his knee with a ring in his hand before her.

Standing up, she grabbed her own wrist and gazed at her bare ring finger. There was a small change of skin color circling around the finger, as if a piece of jewelry had been there once and had been taken. A tan line, a light shading indicating that once...once she had said 'I do'.

Karma stumbled backwards, slowly trying to retreat as she just stared at her finger.

"I-I have to go.....I-I have to go back. I can't do this."

Rain...

Karlisle lie on the ground choking and gasping for eveyt ounce of air to fill his lungs. His hands reached to sooth now bruising neck.

Rain speckled his cheeks as he focus on his breathing.

Karma turned away completely. Feelings were creeping into her chest and she hated every single one of the them. Her walk transformed into a run. Her run transferred into vanishing completely

----x----

The girl let every tear rush past her eyelashes and down her skin. Her back pressed mercilessly against the door of her hotel room where she had vanished to in search of being alone. She knew she wasn't. She knew she was never alone. She knew this would be reprimanded.

And she knew she couldn't kill him. Karma searched her memories for anything and everything, letting herself cry. Letting herself break. And letting her wall of bad intentions crumble to pieces at her feet.

Her fingers clung to the carpet floor below her weight, wishing the pictures and memories would stop but at the same time wanting them to devour her until she fell into them completely.

And suddenly, there it was.

She saw herself standing on top of a bridge, taller than the one she had been on earlier that day. One that almost didn't end between the depths of where she stood and the bottom below. The figure of her stepped towards the edge one last step before there was no possibility the platform would save her, and a voice shouted from behind.

"Aria, no! Please! I'm here!"

She watched herself jump to her own suicide.....Karlisle screaming for her to stop.

Her name. Her real name. Aria.

Any desire to move had long since vanished now. Karlisle lay in the grass, unable to bring himself to move.

Bitter memories burned behind his eyelids.

Panicked nervousness, flowers for the pain, rings for the promises, kisses for the passion. Being one. Being something bigger than just himself. Lost in loving one another and being with each other.

First date, two week long honeymoon, anniversaries with unspoken gifts caught amidst the chilling fire of their eyes.

It was more than he knew how to bare in that moment. And with that, he went to the bridge. Her bridge. It was his sanctuary from this suffering. It was his haven, a stable habor during the hurricane. He would stay there until morning light.

Aria

Aria....

"Tears are for mortals, don't you think, Karma?"

Karma stared at the ground in horror, not lifting her head to search for the owner of the voice. She swallowed hard, feeling more vulnerable than she wanted to and like she was so anxiety ridden that her form was about to change. She listened to the voice as it came nearer to her, unmoving, unflinching.

"I've never seen a demon cry before. It's kinda pathetic really."

Karma shut her eyes fast, wiping the tears away and making sure not to make eye contact with the owner of the voice residing before her.

"Don't you have your own business to attend to?"

"Oh, I did yes...." the boy's voice grew closer, making her uncomfortable and causing her heart to ache, "but I finished my job. How about you, Karma? Did you finish the job yet?"

Karma shot a glare upwards and stared into the red eyes hovering before her in the form of a man. His hair was long and white like hers, and he was crouched to her level so that they were eye to eye. She never did like the way he looked at her.

"I'm working on it." she huffed, the boy rolling his eyes and tapping her nose with his index finger.

"Oh is that so?" he charmingly wondered aloud, Karma standing up and walking away from him. He watched her as she looked to the mirror and wiped her eyes clean of makeup while the creature behind her lingered, "Because based on what I just saw, it looks like our chosen little demon's been playing kiss and tell with her client."

Sitting on the top of the bridge. The clouds rolling over metal beams and suspension rails. He sit crouched with his head resting on his knees. He looked over the edge and thought to himself.

"It'd be so easy."
