Graded [Yemaya City] Knightly Duties (Or Something Similar)

Unicorns prance in the garden of eden.

  • "Treasures?" Siegfried uttered, "What need is there for treasure..." He'd say without thought, "If you had not found it, that likely meant you searched the wrong cave. If there were any bats or centipedes around, you should have asked them." Said he, as if it were normal for most to be able to talk to animals and the like. Which it was not... Apparently.

He then came across a thought, "Once we come to the pond, I would be compliant to ask the Frog Princess if there was a cave such as that. Princesses should know things such as that, correct?" The would-be knight would state, after all, royalty were of high standing and that meant they were knowledgeable and wise. Although, if there was a frog princess, was there also a frog queen and king? Siegfried didn't recall seeing any other frogs...

The children's general opinions on unicorns with Siegfried's relayed knowledge made him flinch. Horrible and lame was what the young girl used to describe their destinies and lack of feelings... From Siegfried's perspective, he found it quite the contrary. He did not truly yet understand why lacking feelings or being lonely was such a terrible thing. If aught, being mortal was more so horrible; However, he wouldn't relay that opinion.

The bird kid's question piqued thoughts of the former monoceros. It was a fascinating question. "Perhaps they do, perhaps they do not." He would answer, "We cannot see such creatures with the eyes of reality, our eyes. Thus, we may come across them in thoughts or when we close our eyes, we may meet them in a dream. Unicorns are only real if you believe they are—" He'd pause for a moment, "If you remember they are." Siegfried added.

The so-proclaimed knight would smile at the bombardment of questions. It showed they were interested, and he was happy to indulge them with answers. "The unicorn could not cast a miracle by its will, for his horn was weak and brittle; but a unicorn's body itself is miraculous. Any part from a unicorn can grant any wish.

The unicorn's horn is like his heart. It is proof of the unicorn's eternal life. A unicorn can be pierced with a blade, bruised with stones, or burned with fire; but if his horn is fine, then the unicorn too shall be fine and fair..."
Siegfried would think for a moment on the bird child's next question. After all, he didn't continue to live his life as a rose...

"The rose and the unicorn are two different creatures." He'd conclude, " Whilst the unicorn's body became that of a rose, his soul ceased to exist. After all, much like mermaids, unicorns possess immortal bodies—not immortal souls," Despite having that conclusion, and... Wait, why did he know that in the first place? If that was true, how was Siegfried now here...? That did not matter, those... Things just happen. That is how it works. He had not the need to question it further.

The next question required momentary thought and a pause. Back then, he had not truly understood why he did indeed decide to do that for the children of the orphanage... From what he understood, it was a sort of sympathy blending with his duty. "I do not think that it was for empathy. Instead, perchance it was for unicorns' innate nature. They have a duty to safeguard and nurture a destined meadow and all that resided within it. Perhaps, that duty is what drove our unicorn's decisions."

However, what the children spoke of next confused the nominal knight quite a bit. "Huh?" He'd sound out his befuddlement. "...Uhm. I do not particularly know? What happens in the story after the ending, I do not know. The things that happen beyond the end of what I know are for you to decide." Siegfried replied, lifting a hand to scratch his cheek.

Once they came across the pond, Siegfried's tail straightened. The self-proclaimed knight ran over, ("Salutations!") He'd call out with his hands beside his mouth. ("Pardon my volume, but is the Frog Princess still here?") He'd say, scanning the pond and crouching to see if he could find her.

"Miss..." He'd turn around to the children, "Ah! That reminds me, neither of you told me your names did you not? I apologise for that. By what do you call yourselves?" He'd ask, smiling. "I also must remind you, please do remember to apologise to the Frog Princess." Siegfried reminded the felinesque girl, as he stood and crossed his arms.

She practically hissed at the absurdity of being asked what need there was for treasure. “All the need! Ever! If you have treasure, you can get all the food you want, whenever you want, you can get shelter, you can get fancy stuff, a house of your own! Like, treasure could get you pretty much everything your heart desires if you have enough of it! NYYYAA! How could you not know that?” This knight was even weirder than she thought he was.

Upon the mention of talking to bats and centipedes, she looked at the bird kid again. <“He even thinks he can talk to centipedes now! What would those creepy things even have to say? Even if they could talk, I doubt they could think...”>

“<I don't know, I don't know... he's weird. Very weird.>” The bird kid replied.

That sentiment only grew when he started about his frog princess again. Perhaps they should ditch him? That said, they were a little to hungry and weak to know if they could make a successful sprint away form him.

As for whether unicorns were real or not. “I don't get it.” That was all he could answer with regards to Siegfried's answer.

“Hey!” She suddenly called out. “That's a lie!” She puffed her cheeks again. “Nyaa! I know the merfolk from Crustaton die like the rest of us, they're totally mortal!” She knew it, this man wasn't just weird, he was also a liar.

As for the part of self-sacrifice... “No feelings and an innate nature? That sounds like Constructs. Build to just do what they were made to do without thinking or feeling.” She concluded, feeling rather proud of making that connection.

The bird got confused at how Siegfried replied to the last part. “What, but it's your story? I don't get it... I don't. Why do we decide your story's end? It's a bad story without proper end! Pretty bad!” He'd gotten fired up a bit, taking after the mood of his feline companion.

However, they were both falling silent when Siegfried arrived at the pond and started making really weird noises. Now it was clear to the both of them. This many was truly insane. With a silent nod, they figured this was their best chance to escape, as they would try to slowly back away from him. The catgirl was soon to almost vanish from sight (Stealth E), yet the bird was still seen, despite trying to be just as sneaky. Especially once he turned around to address them all of a sudden which made the bird kid freeze up in mild panic.

Needlessly to say, neither of them answered his question regarding their names. Oh, and the frog princess... Perhaps she was in another pond? Or perhaps she was sleeping? Either way, for now at least, there didn't seem to be any sign of any reaction to his calls.

Witches love to eat things which question their existence.

  • He could understand the catgirl's outburst in his regards to treasures. In this world, many creatures wanted riches for some reason. He didn't truly understand it, but he understood that it was common. Still, Siegfried did not comprehend the appeal of glitzing coins and jewels. What he found more valuable, was the happiness and safety of others. How could anything be worth more than a smile and laughter? Well... sooner or later, the former monoceros would have to find out that these concepts were quite linked for some people.

He smiled at the bird kid's reply. "That is fine. Perhaps we will understand in the future." Said Siegfried.

The monocerous's tail swayed in curiosity at the girl's call out. Crustanton? He'd think. The so-called knight didn't particularly know where that was. "I see. Well, someplace else I heard when a mermaid dies, their body fades into the water and rises to the ocean's surface; becoming seafoam..." He paused for a moment, before looking up with a chuckle. "Well, I apologise if it seemed like I told a tall tale." Siegfried would lightly express.

He'd look up at the sky with the felinesque's connection between constructs and unicorns. "Perhaps," Siegfried sighed, "But at least unicorns and constructs alike realise the meaning of their existence. It likely makes living and thinking, or lack thereof, all the simpler." The would-be knight stated. staring at the clouds without expression.

"Oh?" Siegfried smiled, "Well, I may be telling the story, however, it is still from the perspective of our unicorn. Once the unicorn fully ceased to exist, so too did our knowledge of the events that ensued after," said he, "Perhaps the unicorn did more bad than good, due to the greed of adults. Perhaps the matron was content with the happiness of the children. Perhaps, in time, when the children were all grown up, so too did the garden wither and the snow began to fall again. You two both have minds that can think of other endings. This is not just my story, but a story for us to share," Stated the so-called knight, "The story I told does not have to be the story that you tell," The would-be knight would say. "But, in the end, it is but a story." He'd finally conclude.

"Hm," Siegfried gazed into the pond and sighed. "It seems the frog princess is not here and—" Siegfried stopped, his eyes widened as he stared at the bird kid. His tail swayed, whilst he tilted his head to the side. "Oh." He'd utter, hands on hips as he tried to gauge the situation. "W... Where did your friend disappear to?" Siegfried asked, his brows knitted in worry. Thinking back to what the frog princess said... She was cursed by a witch... That meant there was likely still a witch somewhere around in this forest.

With trembling eyes, he'd peer around the area, scanning the trees and bushes for any sign of movement. "There's a witch in this forest, likely—" Siegfried steadied his breaths, calming himself "Did you see them? They may have kidnapped your friend while I was distracted! Oh no, I..." Siegfried was starting to panic, a little bit. He'd promised to bring back the children safely, but the girl seemed to have just disappeared. Only a witch could do such a thing. There was clearly no other explanation!

"I do truly apologise from the bottom of my heart for not keeping my attention on the two of you's safety! We must be with haste, before your friend..." Siegfried couldn't really tell the child that his friend might get eaten by a witch. He already seemed so startled. "Right, I prithee do stay close. I will make sure to find your friend without sparing a moment, okay? Did you see which way the witch might have gone?" Siegfried asked in a hurry, because the kenku kid did seem quite startled. That might mean he saw the witch take his friend.

The bird kid, still frozen in a panic, had absolutely no clue how to react to what Siegfried was saying. Now he was talking about a witch? If anyone here was cursed, it had to be him, right? With all his weird thinking and talking with animals. Luckily for the bird, he wasn't left on his own.

“Nyaa? What are you talking about, you silly knight~” She appeared again, near the edge of the pond's water. “I was just helping you look for that frog princess of yours~” Anyone with a shred of insight would know that was a total lie, as she only vaguely pretended to look for a frog and clearly hadn't been doing so prior. “Perhaps the witch kidnapped this frog of yours! Yes, yes, for sure! I bet the witch kidnapped the frog. You'd best go save her!” Surprised by her own genius, she found a way to ensure this weird 'knight' wasn't going to put them at risk. Now he'd be distracted by chasing down a frog. Brilliant! She felt rather proud of herself.

Witches love to eat things which question their existence.

  • Seeing the felinesque's reappearance made the would-be knight's whole body float for a moment. He put both his hands upon his bosom and sighed, slumping down almost exaggeratedly.

"Have mercy..." He'd whisper, Siegfried looked up. "Oh how ever glad I am that you are safe, child." He'd smile, brows still knitted in worry. Siegfried relaxed his shoulders and took a moment to breathe. "It does make me happy that you were trying to look, but please do refrain from disappearing. You made me worry gravely." He'd say. Not suspect to a thing.

"The witch... Kidnapped the frog princess?!" Siegfried covered his mouth with a whispery shout. Eyes wide, with his slight step back. "If that is to be true, then it is sure for you two to be off quickly. To the village... Must I escort you back?" He'd ask, "Ah- But, if I do that I may be too late to help the Princess Frog... Do witches perchance consume frogs?..." He'd murmur to himself, "No, never had I heard that..." He'd whisper, eyes closed in thought.

"Well—" He'd turn to the children, "You two best be off quickly, I beseech you two do be sure to return in utmost safety to the village. I will be sure to scan the area for any traces of the witch." He'd hastily stay, "I bid you two adieu, and do get fed once you return." Siegfried said, with a smile.

Happy to her bluff working, she smiled at the knight. “Yes, yes, I'm purrrrfectly fine~” She replied, although she wondered how they could make their next escape attempt. Luckily enough, a chance presented itself. He bought in to her lies like a starving wolf on a fresh piece of meat. “Yes, yes, that's a big risk! You should go find her! Quickly, before the witch eat her! I hear frog legs are a delicacy in...” she paused a moment to come up with a random country “Widersia! Those halflings have weird tastes!” Yes, she could work with this! “Perhaps the witch is like that!” She added, stressing the urge for him to go after the witch, as she gave a wink to the bird.

“Yes! No worries! We'll make our way back to town, no problems, safe and sound!” She said, as she gave him a salute, before hurrying over to grab the bird's hand and drag him away, whispering <“let's go, while he's still distracted with his weird frog obsession.”>

The bird nodded, looking over at Siegfried and sort-off feeling a bit bad all of a sudden. “Ehm.... I hope you work things out with the frogs... bye!” He'd say, before being pulled further along by the cat. His stomach felt bad, but that might also be due to a lack of food.

As for the frog princess...

Siegfried wouldn't need to look for long. She'd be found a bit further up the small stream that fed into the pond.

(“Oh, noble knight! For what reason did you return to my humble kingdom?”)

Unicorns bear an eternal airy waltz of petals and sprigs.

  • After being blatantly lied to, which would not have passed Siegfried if he were at least half a bit discerning, he'd carry on in search of signs of either the frog princess or the witch... If said witch even existed in the first place. After briskly following the stream connected to the pond, the self-proclaimed knight would come upon the princess frog further upstream.

He sighed at the sight of the frog's presence, again, with a hand pressed unto his chest. He felt a bit floaty afterwards as if something heavy on him had fallen off. It was something else, besides his stiff and heavy movements he was forced to bear as a result of becoming mortal. This was a different feeling, the type of feeling felt when catching a porcelain vase as it attempts to meet the floor. It was that.

("Good day, Madame—") Said he, brushing off his tunic and crouching down. ("I first did return in order to make the grey-haired child with the cat ears come to apologise to you for her rudeness and attempt to harm you, but...") He scanned the area around him, ("You were absent from the pond I had first seen within. The children suggested you may have been kidnapped by a witch! Thus, I sought out after this 'witch' and told the children to run to the place called Yemaya...") Siegfried the back of his head, a smile timidly forming on his face. ("It gladdens me to know that this was not the reason for your absence.") He'd express.

("Ah, and if this is not rude for me to ask—") He'd speak, before coughing into his hand, "Ahem," The nominal knight cleared his throat, ("For why are you further up stream and not by the pond?") Siegfried would slightly tilt his head to the side.

(“Grey haired kid?”) She asked, not recalling such a kid. She croaked at the mention of the children, having no particular love for beings that wanted to eat her. Even if she'd been an eel at the time. (“I doubt they would've done so. Most people see animals far different than they do other people.”) She replied to him, shaking her head. This knight was an odd one, but she was glad to have him. He'd broken her curse, after all!

It's why she decided to humour him by answering his question. (“My kingdom stretches from the pond all the way to the wetlands that source it. I'm travelling up the stream to inspect the other parts of it. I fear the witch might still be present there and I can't let her go without answering for her crimes!”) She spoke valiantly, hopping up to emphasize her readiness to face the one who'd cursed her head-on!

Completed goal:
  • Find the missing kids and ensure their safety.

Added a new goal:
  • Witch Hunt!
    • Find the witch that cursed the poor frog princess.
    • Deal with her appropriately.

If we are divided in races, does that mean we are all the same species?

  • "Huh?" Siegfried's head tilted to the side a slight bit, ("What do you mean?") He asked. Siegfried did not understand, after all, they were all people. They just looked different, and spoke differently. Birds did not name themselves birds and fish did not name themselves fish. Siegfried did not know he was a unicorn, whilst he was a unicorn. Only when he read what people wrote, did he understand. What did frogs write about? He did not know.

("They are as much as an animal as you are a person, Madame—") He gestured to himself, ("We are all creatures. I do not understand why they would be so coarse as to not apologise.") Said the nominal knight.

("I see,") Siegfried smiled, before standing up straight. ("If the witch still plagues your kingdom, then would you permit I accompany Madame thither? I can provide safety if the witch is still 'shrewish of you, Madame.") He would suggest. ("If fortune provides it, the witch may be gone. Then, you could show me around the wetlands of your kingdom.") Siegfried added with a smile.

She croak-sighed at his statement. (“I'm afraid you're one of the few who thinks so, sir knight.”) She decided that would be all she could explain to him, as she had no clue how else to get into this particular topic. Besides, the topic of the witch was of far greater interest to her. (“I would! Having a knight along would certainly be useful, should the witch attempt to use her trickery on me once more!”) She said, hopping up a bit excitedly.

In fact, she was excited to continue right now! She spanned her leg muscles and...

Hop.

...

Hop.

...

Hop.

...

She hopped bit by bit, with a pause after each hop. It wouldn't be long before Siegfried would likely realise that this might take a while.

Eventually, however they made it to the marshes. Siegfried's could feel it, as the soil was soggy and muddy, making his boots sink into it if he stood still for long enough. (“This is the northernmost part of my kingdom. If she's still around, the witch should be somewhere right here!”) The frog princess proclaimed.

It took two hours to get here.
  • How tedious it was to arrive at the wetlands finally. The frog princess's mode of movement was... Slow. It was slow, very slow. It was more slow than even a usual stroll through an ambient forest during fall. Her hops were short and then she would pause. Every ten or so hops, the pause would be longer. How strange it was, was this some sort of royal movement method? Was it a cultural thing? Siegfried pondered... Only to pass the time.

He thought, for moments. Although, it was right to punish the witch's misdeeds... That witch had cursed the Frog Princess and turned her into another creature. That meant the witch perhaps knew much of curses, and, he wanted to ask her questions. He wanted to know if the witch could break his curse... If it was a curse. Perhaps the witch could transform him back to his original form.

Siegfried wondered if the kids had returned safely to the village. He hoped they were eating well, and that maybe, the villagers would provide them with more proper shelter. He hoped they would successfully find what they were looking for the next time they decided to wander off. He thought of the children back at the orphanage. He wondered how they were fairing, how they were growing. He hoped the matron was not being too harsh, and that her health was well.

There were many hopes which crossed his mind. When he was a unicorn, not a single one would conjure. He likely thought nought at all.

Who did he wish granted these hopes of his? [God] had cast him aside, that was why he was here. It amused him; unicorns bore an alicorn—simple horns which are epitomes of all that is pure, hopes and dreams, miracles... Yet he was born of frozen tears, frosted fingertips and a dead matchstick.

    .

    .

    .

Two hours was the amount of time that it took for Siegfried and the Frog Princess to get to the wetlands. At this point, it was far away from the morning. The sun was bright and made the so-called knight's eyes sparkle. The sun, his shine and warmth were pleasant, but Siegfried preferred it when it was cold and cloudy. It was more right, to him.

He gazed at the wetlands before him, scanning it for movement or a sign of any other creature. ("And wherefore is that?") He looked down at the Frog Princess. A thought crossed him, ("Madame, Do you perchance recall the witch's visage?") He'd ask—his eyes were wandering the landscape which stood before him. If only he could ask the trees or the flowers. However, he heard them not. Perhaps they did not speak in the first place, however, Siegfried did not know.

(“The witch? Oh, she is terrifying. She gazes down upon you from above, with her evil red eyes. She's got a three-pointed black hat as well.”) The frog princess answered. (“However, I don't think we'd need to look for her. I'm sure she'll be drown to the sound of my song! Please, sir knight, would you accompany me? The tune is simple to follow along with.”)

The frog princess spoke, as she started singing an octave higher than in the video) before awaiting a reply.

He can speak to animals and looks like a fairytale prince, thus he should be good at singing, right~?
  • The frog princess's description of the witch at least confirmed that she may not be another frog. Potentially tall, red eyes and a three-pointed hat; were the things which Siegfried would keep in mind while staring at the area surrounding. He would have inquired further, if not for the frog princess beginning to start a song... He did not understand. Was the witch attracted to music?

"I-" He stammered, ("Uh,") Siegfried attempted to interject, ("Madame I cannot particularly—") He stopped himself when the princess began to sing herself. It was a lovely tune, with quite charming lyrics but... Siegfried could not sing. He never learnt how to, and he found it as awful as breathing and eating. After all, singing was just breathing and speaking in a manner to sound similar to instruments. Unicorns could sing as fair as they spoke; as in, they could not at all.

Siegfried tried his best to join her, but he did not sing the lyrics like she did. He simply echoed the words, saying them after her as he would normally speak. His back stiffened, and Siegfried his cheeks became warm. Others would notice right away his cheeks were red as blood against his snow-white skin. He was a miserable singer. His eyes darted through the landscape, looking for the witch. If she appeared, he could immediately stop and point her out.

If the frog princess had any particular thoughts about Siegfried's singing talents, she didn't show a single sign of it. Perhaps... perhaps it was due to the fact that she definitely wasn't exactly on key herself either? With Siegfried's awesome back-up vocals echoing her words as if to translate them into non-singing language, she started singing all the louder. It had its desired effect, as about five minutes later a shape that seemed to match the given descriptions flew towards them. Circling around them the potential 'witch' spoke up.

(“My, my, you again? Tell me, green one? Why must you insist on terrorising my ears with these sounds from Tartarus itself? Why did you bring along this peculiar looking creature to join you in your torture of my precious ears? Are you desiring to be cursed even worse? Has your previous curse not thought you enough?”) Her questions followed in rapid orders, like the cows of raven. Her red eyes pierced them with gazes of hate and annoyance. (“Truly, to disturb the peace and serenity of these lands with such cries of abject horror, to defile the calm and soothing sounds of nature with these torturous sound-waves, to subject each and every living being here to these awful noises, have you two no shame? No shame at all?”) Perhaps this witch wasn't a fan of their song.

Shapeshifter, red herring or the actual witch.
  • As soon as the presumed witch had appeared, Siegfried stopped what he considered his terrible "singing". It only further bemused him that the frog princess did not comment on it. ("There!") He'd stop singing, calling out as he'd extend out his hand to gesture to the witch. He did not point, he held out as if to ask for a dance. It was impolite to point, or so he believed.

He rested his shoulders as he listened to the witch's words. The witch verily matched the Frog Princess's description and the things she cawed out only further convinced the knight to be. ("I am verily shamed,") Siegfried began with a blunt reply and straightened face, ("My "singing" is indeed a blight upon the ears of those who listen and I ask that you, Madame, do find it within your heart to forgive me for making you victim to it.") Siegfried bowed with a lowered head.

("However—") He again stood straight with his tail trashing, ("Your own manners are equivalent to my poor singing, Madame,") He pressed a hand to his chest, brow slightly furrowed. ("To bequeath a threat unto us is verily unbecoming, and I would—with all due respect—that you apologise, if not to me,") Siegfried gestured to the frog princess, ("then to this Madame here.") He'd request. Siegfried wanted to settle their vices with each other without needing to draw his lance, as the supposed witch had not yet done aught.

The witches' red eyes seemed to almost burn when Siegfried tried reprimanding her. (“You would call upon my manners when you barge into someone's home and start to violently attack their eardrums? You talk about manners when you wish for me to apologise to this insolent green pest that has refused to let me enjoy the serenity of my domain? I know not what you are, or why you speak our language, but you are getting involved in affairs you know nothing about.”) She cawed in anger. (“For someone who knows fully well what a blight their singing is upon these realms to use it against another that they never even met or spoke with, can there be anything worse? Truly, you bring shame upon you and your entire lineage!”) She wasn't really mincing her words.

The frog princess, meanwhile, was clearly scared of the bird, as she was staying silent and hopped over to hide behind Siegfried.

Pantomiming
  • The witch's words struck Siegfried, her domain? he'd thought to himself. Siegfried's eyes shifted to the supposed 'Princess' frog. She had claimed that this part of these lands was an extension of her kingdom, otherwise her domain. Siegfried did not know who to believe, as it did not seem as though either of them had lied—Not that he would know, his lie detection is nought.

His head tilted slightly, and neither did he understand what the witch meant when referring to "... Their language..." After all, he believed that anyone could speak to animals. The first time he had become confused by another person's words, was when he had first met that yellowish-haired boy.

A sigh left him, as Siegfried scratched his cheek lightly. He felt a lightness leave him, this all felt quite heavy. He knew it was not, but he likely felt that this whole situation was burdensome. However, a chivalrous and gallant knight was not to think such unsightly thoughts! If this was indeed the witch's domain, then there was only one thing to do.

Slowly, Siegfried would kneel with one knee touching the floor—his tail curled up around the lowered leg. Siegfried rested both of his hands on the other, followed by his head. ("If what you say is the candid truth, then I do from the bottom of my heart ask for your forgiveness in my insolence,") Siegfried looked up, placing a hand on his chest, ("I am Siegfried, an aspiring knight. I was the one who helped the one you referred to as green one,") He would state.

("Nevertheless, if my 'singing' was so awful, then heed me—") Siegfried's right hand rested on his knee, he lifted the other; his index and middle finger pressed together, the others were curled shut—("If ever I were to 'sing' again,") He pointed to his mouth, (" then my tongue shall be cut off so that I may not make a sound again.") Claimed he. He looked to the supposed witch, ("Is that sufficient?") He smiled gently.

("And—") Siegfried held out his hands, palms pressed together. ("I do implore that you would be not unkind as to answer my questions, Madame?") He'd asked of the witch. Siegfried felt no need to comment on the lineage part, for he did not know how he came to be in this world. He is an orphan, yet, not even his orphanage's matron remembers where he had first come from. Like in fairytales, it just happened; and he never questioned it.

(“Oh? If you truly mean that, would you be willing to swear you will do so, pledinging it under the binds of Miralis, the god of Law himself?”) She spoke, her red eyes seemingly trying to pierce through him in an attempt to figure out if he was speaking truthful or if his words were hollow hubris meant to cater to her desires.

She cawed. (“You insult me, yet you ask for favours? Fine, I shall be merciful. I shall answer your questions, but I shall answer no more than three of them. Even that is more than you are worthy of.”) She spoke from her high and mighty position upon a tree branch.

25d0bb7a26d17a6811ecf753a42efc25_c8bd11dd4522f19645b379ec7fe03021.jpg

Meanwhile, the frog princess whispered from behind Siegfried. (“Ask her why she things this is her domain. It's been in my family for multiple generations.”) She sounded a bit insulted at the mention of this place not belonging to her and her kin, although it was debatable if Siegfried would pick up on it.

Do you know a doctor? I think I'm sick. :(
  • Siegfried's eyes widened. The god of law, Miralis? He knew, yes, this world possessed not a single god but instead, many. Gods which personify concepts or beliefs, unlike his previous world, where there was only a single god. The multiple gods confused him, they felt redundant. However, Siegfried still needed to respect it. He stared back at the witch, unflinching as he placed his hand over his heart. ("Indeed, I do.") Siegfried stated.

Siegfried placed his head on his knee again, as if bowing. ("You have my utmost gratitude, Madame.") The self-proclaimed knight would say, looking up with an earnest smile. He had to stop smiling so constantly; his cheeks hurt.

Siegfried had heard the Frog Princess's request, he looked at her with a nod. ("For why is it that you claim that the surrounding landscape is your domain, Madame?") He would first ask, the question of the frog princess. However, he would have to be smart in his next question—they were quite important to him. Siegfried thought for a moment,

("If a creature were to be given life anew in a form that is not their original; do you perchance know of a method in which that creature could be changed back to their original form?") The nominal knight would ask second.

For Siegfried's final question, he thought back to the yellowish-haired mage from before. He suggested that Siegfried find and consult a bishop or priest of sorts in order to help with his severed horn or something along those lines. ("Madame, do you mayhaps have knowledge of the whereabouts of a bishop or someone of similar occupation?") Siegfried would finally ask. His eyes glittered, he was expectant as he leaned forward slightly.

(“Very well, may he extract his wrath upon you should you break your oath.”) She replied to Siegfried's promise and oath to the deity. She was surprised he could make such a promise whilst smiling.

She was equally surprised by the actual questions he asked. She 'waved' with her wing, showing the surrounding area. (“The skies and treetops, those are my domain. Just like how frogs are bound to leave in the soil, only able to jump up and fall down again, we were destined to live in the skies and treetops. If she believes the wetlands and pond to be her kingdom, than the treetops and skies shall be mine. Yet her awful cries and croaking reaching up from her domain and pierces through mine.”)

His second question was equally peculiar. (“I know of some methods. I did, after all, curse the frog princess.”) Her red eyes seemed to pierce straight through Siegfried to stare at the frog princess hiding behind him. (“Yet it is a a dangerous art and one that is more difficult to achieve the greater the power of the target. For example, I could not alter myself, nor could I alter a humanoid being. I fear that those whom were given life anew might be equally beyond my ability to change. I might know those who could do so, but I cannot speak of them.”) Honestly, she'd been tempted to just say 'yes' to the question, but she decided to be a bit more lenient.

His next question, however, made her want to use the tactic she'd previously been kind enough to ignore. (“Yes.”) Considering she'd already given him a pass on the previous question, she figured this one was sufficiently answered. (“With that, your three questions are answered. I'd ask you and the green one to kindly leave and remain silent, so that I do not have to curse the green one once more.”)

25d0bb7a26d17a6811ecf753a42efc25_c8bd11dd4522f19645b379ec7fe03021.jpg

(“I can't!”) The frog princess croaked. (“If I do not sing the song of my people, then what will remain of our kingdom? I can't have all of it go forgotten!”) She called out, sounding rather desperate. (“Tell her, sir Knight, how important it is to keep up your traditions and heritage!”)

Is it not greedy to wish for more when you already have friends, family and a home?
  • Once the witch had finished answering all of Siegfried's questions, he would nod and smile before standing up. ("I thank you ever kindly, Madame.") He bowed, then stood straight again. ("Your answers have provided me with more than enough intel.") He said with an expression tainted with gratitude.

As the frog princess croaked, the self-proclaimed turned his head to look at her. He did not understand the importance of 'Tradition' and 'Heritage' for he had never had such. Instead, a different thought crossed Siegfried's mind. 'Frogs are rife with greed, they already live on both land and water—yet they always yearn for more.' It was a statement he found in a book of vices and virtues. Frogs were used as an allegory for cardinal greed. The witch would likely be fine with the Frog Princess, if not for her volume and need of singing.

Siegfried sighed, ("I believe you two are able to come to a mutual agreement. You need not sing,") he smiled, ("Why not write poems; ballades and odes would do you just as favourably, will it not?") He proposed, ("Use lilypads and wide leaves as parchment and a sharp stone or stick as a tool to write. I am sure that is just as, if not more, efficient as singing—") He'd gesture to himself, placing his hand unto his chest, ("I am no negotiator, I am but an aspiring knight; all I can do is fight and protect.") Siegfried would state. The nominal knight did not possess the skills of persuasion or the know-hows of conducting business and coming to an agreement.

The witch seemed satisfied with his replies, nodding to him. Then she stretched her wings, flapped them, and flew off. She was likely assuming their business here was done.

The frog princess, on the other hand, was shocked. (“To think my own knight... my prince charming... would turn against me.”) She spoke sadly. (“Even if it could honour our traditions, which it cannot, how would I do so?”) She held up her 'hands' to show the webbed appendages. (“These were not made for writing with.”) She sadly shook hear head. (“Now, the last remnant of my kingdom, our tradition of song, is forced to die.”)

  • Siegfried didn't understand, he could not understand. He was a creature born with a single purpose, he needed no thoughts, tradition or culture. They are still alien to him, this form's heritage... What he knows of it is less than little. He had read stories, which are created from a person's thoughts and own lives. He was still getting used to understanding everything.

Hours ago, the frog princess was elated to have achieved her original form—now it seems it was all for nought, with Siegfried's own comments on the matter. He did not possess a solution. He gazed at the creature, expression furrowed in a guilty conscience.

("It is not,") Siegfried replied, ("You are a living signum of your kingdom; its traditions.") He would state, his tail thrashed in the air. ("Even if you are unable to sing airs, you are verily able to create new traditions. That which could be greater than any song.") Said he.

Siegfried would then take another look at the surrounding area. ("Speaking of...") He turned to look at the Frog Princess, ("You say last remnant of your kingdom—where are your kindred? Should you not be received with much greater fanfare?") Siegfried would ask, scanning the landscape once more. It was perplexing, it seemed rather desolate with the exception of the Frog Princess and the Red-Eyed Witch.

(“Something isn't a tradition unless it's been passed down for generations. I have nobody to pass it down too. Thus I can't create new traditions.”) She spoke sadly. As for what happened to her kingdom... (“There was heron. Some were eaten, some fled. In the end, only I remained. I sang to keep up the memory of my kingdom, until I was cursed for it.”) She shook her head. (“You don't understand. Just leave me be.”) After she said it, she turned around and hopped.

… paused for 10 seconds ...

And hopped.

… paused for 10 seconds ...

And hopped.

It seemed like she was making her way back to the pond.

A smile is often transient.
  • ("Madame, wai—") Siegfried stopped himself. he instead simply watched as the frog princess slowly, but surely began to make her way back to the pond. Using her odd methods of movement, it would take quite long. Siegfried did not count the seconds, he simply watched as she'd disappear from sight sooner or later. The frog princess told him to leave her be; she was more perceptive than Siegfried. She saw how he did not empathise with her thoughts.

When the frog princess was eventually gone, Siegfried continued to gaze in the pond's direction. Creatures consume creatures, a thing that is unfortunately necessary. Despite that every creature is conscious, it is still a thing that happens. Although most animals do it out of necessity, some do so by personal motivations. Everyone is not a plant who bathes in the light of the sun to be fed. Everyone is not a spirit disconnected from secular needs. Thus, places in the world must disappear as a result.

Siegfried sighed, turning around to crouch by the waters. He did not see his reflection in the murky water's surface, but instead the face of someone named what he calls himself. His face was that of an equus, and here he saw... Whatever they called themselves. Beasts? It did not make sense to him. What did he do when the scenery was desolate? Prancing through the lands veiled in pure white, crystalised ice fluttering in the harsh cold winds; perhaps. What did it matter to think of things long past?

A reflection of reflections reflected in the water's murky surface. Eyes, a pair of which were too blue to belong to him. There was no end to it, the eternal reflection into worlds and thoughts yon. The sun was a waving flag that was too bright to bear – a mockery. The brightness was unfamiliar to him. Yet, he was likely long gone now, he was here. He was the one staring into the water. They say staring into your reflection for a long time can you make manic.

Siegfried reached out, touching the surface and immediately, the reflection rippled into minute waves, resonating before then dissipating into the disturbed trembling waters which slowly began to settle once more. The waters would appear still again, eventually, as if nothing had ever happened in the first place. Siegfried sighed as he stood up straight.

There was no use in lingering around the wetlands, he would likely only act as a nuisance to the... serenity of the scenery. The frog princess also wished for him not to be in her presence. He was still looking for something either way. Returning to the village to check if the children made it there safely meant going back down the pond's way... So it was like better to just... Go in a different direction instead.

Hoping that sooner or later, he'll find what he is searching for.
