Sybil had skipped her last class that day to run home and nab King from the house, David had little league practice and Hugo was going to spend the night at a friends house so instead of waiting by herself for hours upon hours, she got her best friend to wait it out. King was thrilled as she clipped his K9 harness on, he didn’t know where she was taking him but man was she excited to be going somewhere. She drove back to the high school to watch football practice as some entertainment, meanwhile King spent the time with his tongue flopping in the wind. Once they got back to the parking lot and parked, Sybil dug around in her glove box compartment and grabbed one of the patches that attached to his harness and stuck them on. K9 in Training, Working Dog, Do Not Touch. She hoped it would be enough of a deterrent to people so they wouldn’t just poke at him or distract him. King stayed close to her side as they wondered through the campus, sniffing excitedly at everything since it was all so new to him but he made sure to stay close when Sybil recalled him. “Go ahead” She waved her hand and smiled, King took off towards a bench in order to jump it but at the last second he veered to the right. With a stellar leap, King went straight through the nearest open window which happened to be the music room. “Shit, you stupid cow!” She yelled and set off at a sprint to the window, King found a target quickly and pounced on Jace, licking his face with all the puppy love he could give. Sybil came flying through the window with a vault and just started laughing, “Shit I’m sorry Jace, I think he loves your beanie.” She was laughing through her words, trying to call King back.

Raven walked along side the field, she was bored. Today had been uneventful, she didn’t want to head home just yet. Plus she was supposed to ‘Interview‘ some of the players to see their own views of the season. She wasn’t interested in doing so, who cared about high school football? She rolled her eyes, and they landed on a redhead with a camera, snapping a few photos.

Raven hadn’t seen her around before, was she new? She made her way towards her, and stepped in-front of the girl, blocking her camera.

She cocked a brow, “Taking pictures of the boys for business or pleasure?” She said with a hint of a smile. “Raven.” She introduced herself, Crossing her arms, eying her for a second before speaking. “I haven’t seen you before, am i just not paying as much attention as i should? Or are you new?

Mason watched as Kanen started talking to the coaches. It was sickening to see him acting as if nothing had happened, and even worse that the coaches were willing to give him a chance. Other people made mistakes, and did they get these kind of chances? No. It pissed him off.

Finally, he walked over to where Kanen and the coaches were chatting. "Can we get his tryout of the way so we can get to practice?" Even Mason knew Kanen trying out was pointless -- of course they'd let him on the team. But it was the principle of the matter.

-----

Kanen turned when Mason came over to himself and the coaches. He could tell Mason was aggravated, and to be honest, Kanen was glad. He hadn't even had to say anything yet, and Mason already seemed pissed. "That eager huh?" Kanen spoke, stareing down the other boy. Kanen knew just as well and Mason, this wasn't really a try-out. This was just a formality. Kanen would be on the team by the end of the day.

"Alright, yeah. Let's go ahead and get everything done one. Run a quick kill drill? I'm sure if I can still truck the captain of the football team, I deserve a spot on this team." Kanen suggested. None of the coaches seemed to disagree, so Kanen went ahead and got the guys lined up.

"Kill Drill!"

That was all Kanen had to yell. The guys on the team were quick to get set up into two lines, seemingly eager to watch this little showdown. Confidence practically oozed from Kanen as he slipped into his shoulder and strapped on his helmet.

Nova Abrisst
Kanen had been absolutely right when he said that she should've taken the easier classes. Day one and Nova was going home with two pages of vocabulary words to turn into flashcards. It wasn't that she minded the busy work, and she was confident in her ability to memorize terms, it was just that it was biology and chemistry, and it was so boring. At the very least, she already really enjoyed her AP teachers, and they seemed to like her well enough. Nova had completed the summer reading that had been emailed to her and was able to be active in class, so at least there was that.

The day being done as the final bell rang, Nova slipped her Chem papers into her bag and shouldered her backpack onto her back, pulling her hair from her face as she pushed through the heavy doors of the school and out into the air. Maine didn't have the crisp air that Washington did, which sucked a little, but at least the people seemed nice enough. It wasn't difficult to make friends here (or meet cute guys) like it was back home, so Nova decided that the pros of Westbrook were, at the very least, equal to the cons. And spotting one of her pros granted a smile to her face.

"June!" Nova sang as she waved at the redhead, making her way over to stand next to her with a grin. The raven-haired girl before June was very pretty, short but had something stern about her. She was slightly intimidating, but also looked like the kind of girl you wanted to have your back. The petite brunette smiled at her, giving a small wave. "Hi, I'm Nova," She nodded before looping her arm with June's and looking around. Why was June at a football field? With a camera? I mean not that she was judging but- "Hey that's Kenan!" Nova blurted in something of an excited whisper, pointing as she saw the tall man enter the field. So he was a jock... but a nice jock... interesting. Even in workout clothes, Nova could still make out the definition of his muscles. Looking a little more, she spotted Mason and tightened her grip on June a bit. "So what're you two doin' stalking the football players, hm?" She joked innocently, shrugging her shoulders up and down before laying her eyes back to June.

Great. Mason knew this was coming, but he still wasn't prepared. He couldn't mess this up -- he was captain now. Going down would mean letting Kanen win, and losing whatever little respect he had from the team. So his fingers were trembling a bit as he got ready, pulling on his gear and buckling his helmet. His eyes roamed the stands, and he saw June sitting up there, taking pictures for yearbook or something. Even better. Another audience.

Sighing, Mason headed into the field after the fellow players and lined up across from Kanen. All around him, the others were quick to get into their lines, ready to go. Mason seemed to be the only one not ready.

He looked across at Kanen, and waited for the coach to yell for them to start because Winny doesn't want to mess this up.

June
June was adjusting the settings as she almost dropped the camera as someone got in front of it. “Excuse me?” She asked with a blush on her face until the girl introduced herself as Raven. The name slightly rung a bell, maybe Georgia talked about her. “You’re paying attention. I’m June, I just moved here two weeks ago.” She was slightly annoyed that the girl stood in front of her shoot and moved to get out of the way. Then, Nova made her way across too. June waved to her slightly and was surprised once again to find her locking arms with her.

But she was even more surprised when she knew Kanen. “You know Kanen?” She said surprised and blushing as she also asked her the same question Raven had. “I’m not a stalker or anything. I need to take pictures for the yearbook.” She said to the two before slowly getting her arm unlooped from Nova’s. “But... I’m a little concern by what’s happening.” She stepped forward and zoomed in. Taking pictures. “Do you two know what a kill drill is? I heard Kanen shout it...”

Raven’s hint of a smile turned into an actual one when June blushed. She watched her as she took a step away, Unwilling to let her go back to work. “Two weeks? If i wasn’t paying attention then, i am now.” She waited a moment and opened her mouth to say something else, but before she could a girl called out June’s name. And made her way over to them.

She raised a brow when she linked arms with June. “Nova, interesting name. I’m Raven.” She said as she examined the tiny girl. “What’s with all these new girls?” She said more a statement than a question.

When she mentioned Kanen as turned around to look at the boy, “Ah, yes. Our resident delinquent.” She turned back to look at both of the girls. “Bad boys are very intriguing, but when one gets arrested it’s a turn-off for me personally...” She trailed off and shrugged. “Rumor has it he distributed alcohol to minors at the party last friday, kind of thought he’d do time..looks like that didn’t last.” Nova caught her attention when she spoke. Raven smirked when Nova asked the same question that was asked previously by herself earlier, “I like you.” She admitted, “Sweaty boys are great and all, but I’m here to write an article for the school’s newspaper.”

June asked if either of them know what a ‘kill drill ‘ was, Raven wasn’t big on sports. Well, she just didn’t know the drills. Raven shrugged. “A show of toxic masculinity.” She guessed.

Kanen's eyes locked on to Mason as both boys lined up at either end of the line. Flanked by their teammates on either side, they'd be required to hit each other head on. Kanen didn't mind. He got down into a three point stance, slowly opening and closing his free hand. He was like a gun at this point. All he needed was for coach to pull the trigger, and Kanen would practically explode forwards.

Kanen could hear the other boys, set up in their lines. Soft murmurs filled his ears as he team quietly bet on who would make it through. Of course, Kanen was the underdog here. He had played in about year now, where as Mason was practically in his prime. However, Kanen wasn't discouraged. Listening to the other boys bet against was just like adding fuel to the fire. Their faces would be priceless by the end of this...

The moment the coach yelled for both boys to go, Kanen burst forward, launching up out of his stance like a catapult. He ran at he other boy, staying low, but moving quickly. Mason, being understandably nervous, was slow to get moving. When the two met, Kanen's momentum would drive through the other boy like a freight train.

CRACK!

The sound of shoulder pads and helmets colliding rang out as Kanen and Mason met. However, only one boy would be left standing, and Kanen sure as hell wouldn't let that be Mason.

The moment the two met, Kanen sprung upwards, slamming his shoulder pad up into Mason's chest, lifting the other boy up off he ground. With his hands, Kanen practically threw Mason to the side, like a butcher tossing scraps to a dog. Kanen didn't even look back at Mason when Mason's back hit the ground. He came to the end of the lines triumphantly. Only turning around after he had removed his helmet and threw it to the ground.

"You still feel fucking big, Mason!?" Kanen shouted down at the boy, coming to stand over him. "Stay down, bitch."

Like Kanen predicted, Mason was slow to get moving. And then everything seemed to happen at once, and Mason was in the air, and then his body was slamming into the ground, but something went wrong. Something happened wrong and when Kanen tossed him to the side, it was under another player.

He hit the ground wrong, and then the next thing he knew, he heard a resounding crunch. And after a second, splitting pain shot through his body. The other player had stepped on his leg before stumbling off, and it had already been at an awkward angle. But now, it was in so much pain that Mason almost felt dizzy.

He sat up slowly, only partially hearing Kanen. His eyes trailed down to his leg, and then panic filled him. "Fuck, fuck... FUCK." Mason yelled when he realized that his foot should not be twisted in that direction. "Kanen, what the hell did you do?" Was it his imagination, or was his pant leg way tighter on his leg than it had been before.

He closed his eyes, not wanting to see his leg, and also to try and swallow the nauseating feeling of pain.

Kanen should've felt sorry. He knew he should've felt sorry. But he didn't. This was fair in his eyes. He had come on to this field and done exactly what he set out to do.

"Kanen, what the hell did you do?!" Mason shouted.

"Exactly what I said I would." Was Kanen's only reply before walking away from the other boy.

June
June raised the camera to her eye and then stared at the monitor. She would have responded to Raven if she wasn’t so worried. She took pictures as the two boys charged each other. Then she understood what a kill drill was.

Her heartbeat sky rocketed when she saw in between pictures Kanen snatch Mason off the ground and throw him around. Then she couldn’t take anymore pictures. She heard Mason and saw him grabbing his leg. She didn’t know why, but she found herself taking off her camera and handing it to Raven. “Mason!” She ran out and saw Nova running out as well.

June found herself shoving past Kanen, glaring at him for a moment before making her way to Mason. “Oh my god, are you okay? I’ll call an ambulance.” She whipped her phone out quickly as she saw the coaches helping. She didn’t even think twice as she told the information and looked back at Mason. “They are on their way.”

Nova Abrisst
Nova's smile brightened as Raven introduced herself, and it only grew as she peppered in that she liked Nova. The brunette was not used to this, people liking her, boys flirting with her, especially not football boys. It was all very new and incredibly exciting. Though her giddiness fell as Raven labeled Kanen, an air of knowledge and even amusement in her voice. "Delinquent?" Nova repeated under her breath, cocking her head to the side a little. Kanen? Really? Sure, he was obviously a jock but hadn't acted like one in front of her earlier. And handing drinks out to minors at a party? Nova felt like that was a weird way to put it... out of the two parties she had ever attended as a minor, she was definitely given drinks. Hell, wasn't Kanen a minor too? It wasn't until a loud crashing sound practically echoed through the campus that Nova pulled her head out from underwater, her attention snapping in the direction of the boys. All she saw was Mason on the ground and Kanen angrily glaring down at him. His shoulders pulled up and fell down with every breath he took, and he looked pretty damn scary... but also looked like he was about to go cut the heads off of any living thing he saw.

Both Nova and June mad dashed out to separate boys, Nova unsure of what happened or what drama there was, but for some reason wanting to make sure Kanen was alright. "Hey hey hey woah woah woah," She cooed just as Kanen turned to walk away from the scene, putting her hands on his chest with a gentle pressure to stop him. "Hey, hi, remember me? Nerd girl from Seattle? Study hall?" Nova joked lightly, smiling a bit as she looked up to the steaming boy. She took a minute there, just sort of examining him. She knew very well that she was most likely crossing a line, but she felt some sort of weird obligation to make sure that Kanen was okay. After a bit, she took her hands away, and did her best to ignore the hustle and bustle that was going on around them. "Look," Nova sighed, tossing her hands up in a helpless sort of way, "I just got here, so I don't know the ins and out of drama and who hates who, so I'm sorry if I'm overstepping, but," A deep sigh left her lips as she looked around Kanen to the crowd that surrounded the boy she met earlier this morning before trailing her hazels back to his sea-greens. "I just want to make sure you're okay."

Jace had been in heaven in the music room. Enjoying the serenity as he lovingly tended to the instruments and dusted things and what not while waiting for Ash. Sadly, the windows were open and he could hear the football team practicing. Jeez, they were absolutely annoying.

And then, something even more annoying happened. A dog. A FREAKING DOG, came in through the window and before Jace could scream in terror, he was on the ground, violently being kicked by said dog. He could barely breathe past the horrible smell of dog breath, and then he heard someone laughing.

"Sybil!" He gasped. "HELP. It's eating me!"

"King, platz.." She was wiping her eyes from the tears of laughter, King stepped away from Jace then dropped on the ground, whining softly with his ears back. "Nah..." She walked over to Jace and grabbed him by the hand, pulling him up so he was sitting. "King just has a mind of his own sometimes, plus he just likes people." She reached over and scratched behind King's ear, the dog gave the pair a goofy smile with his tongue out. "Here, you can clean your face off." A red bandanna was magically produced from the pocket of her olive drab jacket, pushing it into his hand. "Sorry about that, I thought he was gonna jump the fence but I guess he thought the window was a better obstacle."\

Raven turned around seeing the boy on the floor, she grimaced. “Hey, look. I was right.” She said to them, June handed her the camera, and both of the girls sprinted towards the field. She furrowed her brows, “What am i gonna-“ She cut herself off, deep in thought...looks like she couldn’t get an interview today. But maybe another story?

“Damn, who ever said high school football isn’t exciting.” She spoke to herself as she adjusted the lens and snapped a few photos.

"No." Mason gasped and looked up at the sky for a moment. He took in a deep breath, trying to push the pain away. "Nope. No hospital. I will... I will just walk it off." Yeah, that would work. His mother's insurance was minimal. It wouldn't cover most of the hospital bill, and definitely not the ambulance. So Mason would be stuck to pay for all of that, and he couldn't risk it. Nope. He needed that cash.

"Fine... I am... I am fine." His breathing was coming in short gasps. "I'll just... just walk it off. Go home... And rest..." He said as he pushed himself up, trying to stand on his one good leg, only to fall back to the ground on his hands and good knee. "I will... I will just... yeah..." He just needed a moment, and then he would crawl his way home if he had to.

"No doctors..." Mason grumbled one last time and gestured for someone to help him up. "I'm going home."

June
June was shocked to hear him say no. He seemed to be pretty out of it and she frowned as he started to move saying he would walk it off rather than going to the doctors. Instantly, she thought back to a time in middle school where she refused to go to the doctors for her broken arm, crying that they couldn’t afford it. But her mother managed to pay it just barely and June felt bad since.

She understood maybe that was the same for him. “You can’t walk it off.” She made him sit down again just so he didn’t walk on his leg. “It’ll be okay and taken care of. You can’t stand on it.” It wasn’t long before she heard the small wails of sirens heading over.

Sawyer
Sawyer's whole school day had basically been a blur. She was too busy thinking of why was soon to happen to worry about passing Physics. Mr. Burgman was negligant as a teacher at best anyway. Sawyer wasn't someone who could just understand things after watching one video about it, but Burgman didn't seem to care so neither did she. In fact, she spent whole class period in there making a sign and a piece of poster board she'd stolen from the storage closet in the art room. Sawyer would admit that she wasn't the most artistic of people but she tried.

Basketball practice wasn't much different than the rest of the day. Sawyer was yelled at....more than once. Coach had even threatened to sit her down if she didn't quote, "pull her head out of her ass". That had been quite the eventful practice to say the least. Theater was the last thing on the agenda for tonight and she was getting a bit restless. She had plans to follow through with after all and they were big ones too.

Sawyer burst into the theater with the same dramatic air that she always did and strode down the aisle. She launched herself up onto the stage where everyone else was mulling about waiting for the director.

"Evening nerds and ladies." Sawyer offhandedly mentioned before making herself comfortable in a prop chair and scrolling through Twitter to see what was going on. Grace made a jabbing comment about not answering texts and Sawyer closed out of Twitter after that, sighing and sinking lower into the chair. Shit. Grace was probably pretty pissed about that. Sawyer hadn't even thought to consider that as a problem. Fucking hell.

@nerds

Grace

tumblr_inline_p1oaeaP8141rifr4k_540.gif

Grace’s day had been everything but pleasant. She’s pretty sure she’s failing spanish, so early in the school year? Isn’t good. Cheer practice wasn’t great either, Ash didn’t seem interested. They weren’t as in-sync as they are other days. She suspected it had something to do with that stupid rumor. The routines didn’t work out, and she knew it wasn’t because the routines were bad, she worked on that all last week. It was their friendship on the rocks. Once things started to die down she spoke, “Right, okay. Good practice guys.” was all Grace said, giving a thumbs up. the other cheerleaders must’ve noticed how she acted because they looked at her a bit weird.

Taking a seat, and a breather. She scrolled through social media didn’t help her mood, seeing as Sawyer replied to Alester’s post, and not to her text. It’s been two days. How long until they can just talk it out? Typing out a some-what harsh reply to her she put her phone on silent. She sighed as she put her phone in her pocket. Regretting the comment already, what’s done was done.

Walking into the theater, she noticed someone she should’ve expected to see, she forgot Sawyer had theater too. She thought about leaving for a split second, almost everyone looked her way. Well, there goes that choice. ‘It’s just Grace, not the director..’ a boy said sadly. “Nice to see you too Alex.” She gave a tight fake smile, walking up the steps and taking a seat across from Sawyer, pulling her phone back up, scrolling through social media absentmindedly as she thought to herself, maybe if she would’ve ran into Sawyer earlier in the day, it would’ve been easier to talk if she was in a better mood. Bottom line was, Sawyer didn’t seem interested. She obviously didn’t want to talk, so let’s not talk.

Sawyer
Sawyer was nodding off in the rather comfortable prop chair when she heard one of the guys say Grace's name. Her eyes snapped up and she watched as Grace walked up to the stage and sat across from her. They sat in complete silence for a moment before Sawyer breathed a heavy sigh.

"Fuck this." Sawyer stood up, pulled her beanie down over Grace's eyes with a laugh and dragged her off in the direction of the costume closet. Someone tried to call after her to stop her but she just threw the finger over her shoulder and they shut up.

Once they were inside, Sawyer flicked on the light and pulled the door closed behind her. "You, " She breathed a heavy sigh, "Are going to be the death of me, Jackson." She leaned back against the door with a smile, "You wanna talk? Well here we are. All alone." Sawyer leaned in for good measure, whispering the last part of her words, "Let's talk."

Jace snatched the bandanna from her. His face was wet, and he was not pleased. He wasn't a pet person at all. He'd once had a rabbit, but had managed to lose it after less than a week. Yeah. Somehow. It was now a free rabbit somewhere. Jace wasn't entirely sure, but either way, dogs were not his thing in the least bit.

He wiped the slobber from his face and passed it back to Sybil, still somewhat irritated. "Well... keep it from chewing on the equipment or something." Jace warned, as he turned back to what he'd been doing. Which had been him about to sit and practice his guitar while he waited for Ash. "Aren't dogs not allowed on campus?" Jace asked as he pulled his guitar strap over his head and rested it comfortably across his chest. With his guitar, Jace felt much more at ease.

--------

Mason was still one stubborn dude, and he was determined not to go. "No, no, no. Someone just take me home." But no one was willing to help him, and that was just frustrating him more. "I can't... no." If he went to the hospital and they wrapped it up in a cast, he wouldn't be able to go to work. Not to mention the bills, which would eat into the meager savings Mason had.

Ambulance rides weren't cheap, neither would the bill be for any pain medications or whatever the hell else they charged him for. "Don't, no..." Mason had been saving up for so long, and now something like this. "I can't... Can't go... gotta go home, June. For Ari."

But as he said it, Mason knew that he wasn't making any sense. There was no walking this off, and his shoulder slumped in dismay. "God damn it. Why am I such a fuck up." He mumbled to himself, although it was easily loud enough for others to hear.

Kanen slowed as Nova practically appeared out of no where, pushing her hands on his chest to stop him. He came to stop, gazing down at the goofy girl he had met earlier. Kanen hadn't even noticed she was around, so it honestly came as a bit of a surprise when she materialized out of nowhere. Though it wasn't a bad surprise be any means. She seemed cool, from the little bit Kanen had spoken to her. Kanen just wasn't really sure why she was even here.
She seemed concerned though, which Kanen quickly brushed away. "I'm fine." Kanen insisted, gently pushing past her to retrieve the football helmet. Sure, he was hopped up on adrenaline, but aside from that, Kanen was all good. He'd done what he came out here to do, what did he have to be mad about at this point?

She shoved the bandanna in her jacket pocket and dropped down in a chair, "King doesn't chew, he bites.. or licks, depends on the mood." King perked up at the sound of his own name, wandering over to plop down in front of feet. He just puffed his lips and started staring at Jace and his guitar, his stare was gonna be never ending at this point. Her fingers ran through his fur, "Shhh... Rules are meant for breaking Jace." Sybil winked and smiled another thousand watt smile at the beanie boy.

Nova Abrisst
Nova nodded and slightly stepped to the side as Kanen grabbed a helmet and went his separate ways from the group. You're an idiot, she thought to herself with a bit of a chuckle before shrugging her shoulders and adjusting her jacket. It wasn't her place to press on, and so she didn't. Instead she lifted her gaze to the huddle that appeared around Mason, June in the center of it all, and that was definitely not her place either. Meekly looking around, Nova let her gaze fall to her feet and walked towards the parking lot, not ready to go home but ready to be away from the drama that seemed to surround the football team. As she passed Raven she gave a small smile and wave, placing earbuds into her ears and shuffling the 'Sleeping with Sirens' playlist that she had been frequenting lately.

The parking lot was pretty barren by the time Nova reached it, unlocking the burgundy truck that seemed too big for her, the small brunette grabbed a pencil and sketch pad before throwing her backpack in the backseat. Shutting the door, she made her way to the stepside and jumped into the bed of her old Silverado, taking off her jean jacket and laying it against the back right corner for some cushion. A few cars were still scattered here, a few Honda Civics, one other truck, a beaten down Volvo and some newer cars that looked to be right off the showroom floor. The view wasn't bad though, and neither was the weather... and her first day at a new school hadn't been as terrible as she had thought it would be. A small smile gracing her face, Nova pulled her phone out and clicked to her contacts, scrolling to the Js and crinkling her nose as she saw her new contact. Before she lost her guts, she quickly tapped 'Send Message', wrote it out and pressed send before going back to her music, mindlessly sketching in her notepad.

To: Jace
Hey, it's Nova. It was nice meeting you today. I'd love to grab that guitar and talk about lessons if you're ever free :)
