Kagemalum

Kagemalum silently suffered from the pain of the volley of strikes that rained on him. While he managed to deflect a fraction of them, it was far from enough. His cloak was ripped to shreds. and the protective pads he called armor were rendered useless. He cursed all of them in his mind in a plethora of ways, but he had no time to waste.

He wanted to at least take a souvenir if he lived. For the Queen.

The Queen's Hidden Blade managed to focus further, masking his visibility and audibility, and dive away from the next volley of strikes. Should he be successful, he would run parallel to the woman carrying his prey. Who knew? This might actually turn out good. For him.

Diego failed to defend against the Wood Guardian's follow-up attack which would normally kill him, but I was informed of illness so I'll narrative out something more lenient as he could feel vines wrap around him and thorns sting into his flesh. The thorned, tangling vines starting to drain him of his blood and life-force slowly yet steadily, as he'd need to try break free of them or be freed from them before he'd be completely unable to continue resisting.

Fenrir was the first to counter-attack Kagemalum. Whilst Kagemalum vanished from sight and hearing, his scent did not vanish. Especially not the bloodied weapon he'd stabbed Saoirse with or her blood that'd splattered on his armour. Jastira and Melia were rendered equally useless by the invisibility and soundlessness.

Fenrir – Strength B (5) – Weapon E (2) – Ability E (2) – Bolster (1) = 10. As the force of his strength forced the metal to splinter, he was quick to attack twice more with his other blade. (Combo +2 = 12). Ryuuji, unable to aim at the now invisible Kagemalum, was unable to help out with his bow and arrow.

Kagemalum – Speed A (6) – No Equipment – Ability E (2) – Hive Bonus (1) – Fast F combo (1) = 10. As he was trying to dodge whilst becoming invisible, he could feel the Wolfman's latter two attacks slice through his back. Whilst the wounds were relatively shallow, they crossed his entire back and managed to draw blood with ease. (Kagemalum HP 5 => 3). That said, he was fast enough to catch up to Teti and Saoirse.

Teti was able to scoop up the bunny and start running off, although he'd notice the bunny in his arms was fading in and out of conscious and seemed to be going through some things. The sudden death had really scrambles Saoirse's memories and the vast amount of pain she was still in didn't help much.

The echoes of laughter rang in her eyes from two lifetimes ago, her attempts to make slaves flourish back in Rome being ridiculed by the other nobility. She recalled the feeling of crushing defeat and devastating loss when her own husband told her he was through with her, that she was to be exiled, that all she'd worked on would be in vein. To learn that the slaves she'd so dedicatedly worked on to make flourish were going to be sent to the coliseum instead, to die a horrible death rather than to flourish.

The pain remembered her of that one day, short after her rebirth. It hadn't even been a month when she'd been in her fathers study, called in to be questioned. She recalled his furious words to her. How had she dared to associate freely with a mere slave? To spent funds on a worthless endeavour. She recalled how he was deaf to her attempts to explain to him the rare talent of painting she'd discovered in the Elven slave, how she'd found someone so talented that she just had to make her flourish as a painter. She recalled her father's silent anger as he gestured for one of the servants to come in. How he told them that 'two fingers should make her understand' as they approached her.

She recalled the pain as she felt the bones crack. The despair as she realised this life might be the same all over. Another failure. She recalled how she'd been in tears, grasping her broken fingers, staring at her father as he continued in an ice cold calm manner. How he told her they'd have some special guests from Gnollbone visit them. How he'd give them a feast to dine on. How Saoirse was going to attend that feast and act like she was the polite and obedient girl he'd raised. How she was not going to say a single thing about the main dish that'd be served.

She recalled her stomach twisting and turn at that dining table. How she'd explained her broken fingers away as a clumsy fall. How she'd focussed on the pain in them to try swallow their meat dish. How she'd vomited up her entire stomach's contents the moment she was finally excused. That's when she'd made up her mind to play along the rules so long as she'd have too. Until finally, she'd be able to buy her own slaves and ensure that not a single power could prevent her from making them flourish.

Some better memories arose. Being able to buy Melia, buying up Ryuuji from the hunger of the gnolls. Visiting the burned-down Gnollbone to see how she could abuse the situation. Getting her hands on other promising slaves like Diego, Teti and Fenrir, as even the Cow was a fond memory. After all, the Cow was the living proof that nobody could take away her property, no matter how disobedient or unmanageable it was, it was hers. Hers to keep, hers to make flourish, hers to protect against external forces that'd stop that process.

Yet all that was lost again. She'd been naïve. She should've had a back-up plan in the contract, in case she were to die. She should've made those contracts stricter, more clear, with a lot more back-up clauses. She shouldn't have thought she was safe just due to having slaves guard her. She should've gotten something to protect against such assassinations. Yet she'd done none of that and now she'd lost it all.

A hand went to her neck. She knew what happened to failures in her family. Her mind was working overtime. Her father should not be the one to find out first. She knew what happened to her siblings that failed him. Her mother...? She had yet to hear what'd become of Harland, after Ryuuji healed him, but she didn't doubt he was wearing a collar by now. There were only a few siblings she was on good terms with... Should she beg her former slaves to escort her to her younger sister? That was the safest option... Fuck. To be so utterly defeated so suddenly that she was seriously considering begging her former property to help her reach the one person in her family who'd at least treat her somewhat decently as a slave. Her nails dug into the flesh of her palms. Perhaps death would've been a kinder outcome.

To that extend, she finally noticed. Why was Teti running off with her. Why was she even alive again? Ryuuji's healing magic was just in range to catch up to them, as she felt some of the remaining injuries close and clear up. She still wasn't in a good state, she definitely wasn't all that composed, but she was able to utter some words again. “Why..?” That was the only thing she managed to get out. Not understanding, at all, why she wasn't dead, dying or resurrected and enslaved by her family.

Whilst Melia couldn't see the enemy, she could see Teti and Saoirse. Deciding that, if she couldn't attack the enemy, the least she could do is protect her (former) master. She'd failed to defend her once, a grave shame on her honour. She'd not fail that again. “Get down!” She'd call to Teti and Saoirse. If they would, she'd stand over them, literally, making it so the only way to try get to them was to get through her first. “I swear that I'll pay you back for what you did to my mistress!” She'd call out to the monster. (Actions; move, move, stand guard over them.)

Jastira was left with very few things she could do, but noticing the situation was pretty dangerous, she did all she could. Grabbing her catalyst, she'd run over to Diego tried cutting some of the vines around him with an arrow-head, hoping to help break him free. “Come on, break out already!” She called to him, not wanting to have to deal with that Wood Guardian herself. (Action; move, move, try help Diego break free.)

" Fuck fuck fuck just fuck off already " Teti thought to himself wanting this bug man to just go away or at least not follow him. There was also the guard guy that was fighting. " Well my family might not be great but at least they don't try to kill me" that much was true they might have tried to sell him but that was just what they did, they might have also forced their kid into a life he might have never chosen, but hey it was going to be that way no matter what. " Maybe i should apologize to them... no they could have tried harder " Teti was really getting a bit lost with this as he ran and well with his mistress went down in one go he really didn't want to test his luck.

luckily Melia was ready to defend him or well saosire who he happened to be carrying so him as well. he was not about to look a gift horse in the mouth with that one and besides this did give him an idea. " Maybe she earns a hug after this, or maybe i get a little hurt " Teti thought as he ducked behind Melia thinking on how to get her that contact with their bunny former employer.

" Don't worry i think Melia has got this, if she gets him i think you owe her a hug " Teti teased playing of the situation that to him was rather dire as minor " And try not to die again how are we supposed to flourish if you make a habit of getting killed " He joked his jokes a bit harsh but the point of them was to distract his mistress from her thoughts and make her only think of his words. He also kept her tightly held, not enough to hurt but not one was getting her unless the pried her form his dead body, which he really really didn't want to happen.

"What the." Diego though he had time to react but he didn't manage to react before the vines tangled around his body. Why did he freeze for that moment, why didn't he react, doesn't matter he will have all the time in the world to figure it out if he survives that is.

The vines coiling around his body and piercing through his armor slowly draining his blood wasn't something he expected to happen but he had to get out, especially since Jastira decided to help out with his escape from those binds. "You don't have to tell me twice." He said as he gripped his broken glaive tightly and with his hand now free thanks to Jastira's help, before jamming the blade down slicing the thorns and vines from himself as he swung his arm around, slicing the thorns and vines to pieces.

Assuming Diego will be able to get free from the vines and thorns after doing his previous action he would move out of their remains, closer to the Wood Guardian and attack him. IF he did not get free of them full he would instead attempt to attack him twice with everything.

As Fenrir’s blade sliced through the back of his target, the Wolfman’s expression most likely betrayed his current state of mind. He bore his sharp fangs fully, letting an almost incessant, continuous low growl. And that change happened at the very moment that the scent of the assailant’s blood reached his nostrils. It was as if something long forgotten had been remembered, by instinct alone, which drove the butler to a single-minded objective: to slay the creature.

Pulsating, sensorial memories came to life and disappeared as quick as a blink. That particular blood, that particular smell was not strange to him. It was as if he had basked in that scent, in a rather copious quantity in the past. What was it? How was that possible? It was different from the blood of the bandits back at the newly acquired estate for sure.

Fenrir’s strong muscles tensed beneath his garments, and as his eyes scanned the battlefield to accomplish the objective of slaying the creature, only then he noticed one of his blades had fully shattered, unable to withstand the sudden rush of strength. The sight brought some of the Wolfman’s rationale back, a loud click of displeasure leave his lips. It didn’t matter, he still had another blade and that one would do just fine.

The nostrils of the butler’s snout kept opening and closing, as the beastman, who acted more like a bloodhound at this point, tried to not lose the pungent smell of his quarry’s vitae. And, coiling the musculature of his legs and lowering his full body for a moment, he shot forward like a bullet towards the scent. And, if successful in finding the direction in which the murderer went, he would perform a speedy thrust with his unbroken weapon¹², before a horizontal slash with it³. Taking down that thing was his priority, as well as trying to keep a semblance of dignity while doing so.

Pressure on Kagemalum lightened up. Which was appreciated, but on the flipside, taking his meal proved to be nearing towards impossibility.

At this point, the Hive warrior had two paths. Retreat and try something else later, or give what he had left and see how much he could hurt these idiots preventing him from taking his sole target. His pride and sadism won out in the end.

As his presence slowly returned, he turned to the last idiot trying to attack him up close. The dog was going all out on this attack. And Kagemalum would respond in kind. Vanishing to the fullest of his extent, Kagemalum threw a barrage of strikes aimed at Fenrir. Igniting his sword with each strike.

Ryuuji saw what was going on and he tensed up, a scowl coming to his serious face. "Don't think you're getting away that easily.." He'd say under his breath with distain some good for nothing monster..he wasn't about to just let this thing kill his party, no way. His eye lit up to be a faint greenish hue, as he channeled his own Precognition F
to get a better read on Kagemalum to hopefully increase his chances of hitting this time.

Ryuuji really didn't think he was going to get to a point where he needed to use the bow and arrow so soon granted to him but now he was really thankful that Saoirse had thought to have given him one.

Ryuuji then promptly shot two arrows in quick succession at Kanemalum's way, just hoping that the others could hold the other front, as he couldn't focus on everyone at once and felt this one was a higher threat than even the other monster was.

Saoirse, still being rather out of it, agreed with Melia earning a hug without much thought. “Right, yes.” The next bit, however, confused her a fair bit. “What..? But... I screwed up. It's over? Some of my family's going to come at me and... perhaps I'd be better off dead... perhaps they'll even come at all of you like vultures, now that you're all free and I'm left with nobody...” She could already see it happening. Teti would feel her shiver in fear, not at the thought of dying again, but at the thought of what some of her family might do to her and the former slaves she'd wished to make flourish. Her siblings going after them just so they could use them to spite her... It was a likely thing to happen. There were definitely some half-brothers and half-sisters that would love to get a hold of such a chance. She hadn't yet even managed to comprehend why Teti was still holding on to her.

Kagemalum managed to vanish again, this time from sight, hearing and scent. Yet unlike before, they knew he was there and had at least some clue of where he might be at. Especially as he hadn't moved since using the ability.

Melia was the first to try (counter)-attack him. Starting at her strongest, she'd swing at him thrice, hoping that at least one attack would land.

Melia's first attack swung and missed. The second, however, managed to find contact with Kagemalum. Strength C (4) | Weapon D (3) | Ability E (2) | Bolster (1) and now that she had made contact once, she was able to land her follow-up attack as well (+1 combo bonus) | 11 total.

Fenrir managed to land both hits as well. Strength D (3) | Weapon E (2) | Ability F (1) | Bolster (1) | Combo bonus (1) = 8 Total. Seeing as to how Melia attacked first (bigger total BE), his attacks ended up backing up hers. (Melia +2 team-up bonus = 13).

Ryuuji wasn't able to see Kagemalum outright, but he was able to predict a few seconds into the future to see where he would appear soon after his Undetected would cancel out and managed make an educated guess based on that. Whilst his arrows were shot wildly (the dice were in his favour), they managed to make contact with Kagemalum (+2 team-up bonus = 15).

Despite all the attacks coming his way, Kagemelum's weapon clashed with Fenrir's and the Ornate Sword would crack (E => F) as the other attacks and arrows ended up hampering, but not stopping him from attack the Wolfman.

Vaguely starting to notice how dire things were getting, she tried to pry herself away from Teti and scrambled to get up (Action 1) after which she'd throw Fenrir her Dagger D (Action 2). “Catch!” He'd need one action to try catch it, two if he'd end up needing to pick it up (will be a dice roll, just give me three actions and assume the third might be cancelled out if the dice roll fails). It seemed like, for now, she could only hope that they wouldn't all meet the same fate as she had.

Thanks to Jastira freeing him up just enough to reach his weapon and use an ability, Diego managed to free himself from the vines. He was still close enough to attack from where he was at, yet the simple F-grade ability was stopped with ease. Even with it being followed-up by another attack. That said, the enemy didn't seem to have much strength left to counter-attack with either.

As the creature noticed that Diego was freed again, the bunny was resurrected again and the bug man might soon be in trouble, he seemed to loose interest. Likely having worn itself out and no longer considering the risk it was taking worthwhile. “You live this time.” He spoke, as all of a sudden, his body would start falling apart into multitudes of tinier ones...

The countless tiny moss monsters that the Wood Guardian seemed to be breaking up into were quick to rush off, hiding beneath the moss, sprinting off and vanishing from sight left and right. It seemed that from the very beginning, this creature had been a trick played on them by the Moss-dead Territory.

Fenrir growled in frustration with the unsuccessful join attack from him and the others. Not only that, to make things worse, his sword had been partially damaged. Just how strong was that creature who was being able to contest the whole group? Still, despite the situation, the Wolfman would not back down and, if necessary, the assassin with his bare hands.

Thankfully, it didn't seem that doing that was necessary, at least not for the moment. By the corner of his amber, bestial gaze, Fenrir caught the sight of something being thrown towards him, his brain rapidly processing what that was. "Thanks, mistress!" He growled, with a rumbling deep tone, as his hand reached for the flying dagger, hoping to catch it while in midair.

And, without missing a beat, he would focus on his other senses once more, stabbing against Kagemalum with mouth-bubbling rage. What had done could NOT be allowed to pass.
