She looked up at him sweetly, trying to read his feelings for her in his expression. "I know," she said, squeezing his hand as she linked his fingers in his.

He hesitated and stroked her cheek gently "can you tell me what I'm feeling?"

"I don't know," she whispered as her heart pounded in her chest, giggling a bit as a wide smile exploded across her face. "What are you feeling?"

"My heart feels all light" he blushed "like I'm flying through the sky, playing Quidditch but it's different because I'm looking down at you and wishing I was right there by your side"

She stepped closer to him and ran a hand through his hair. "I feel it too," she whispered. "I've felt it for a while."

"How long?" He whispered, his face even redder from her close proximity

"Three years," she said with a half shrug.

"I...I didn't know" he cautiously stroked her cheek again "I'm sorry"

"Don't be," she said softly, placing her hands against his chest. "I'd wait forever for you."

He bit his lip "you don't have to" he gently lowered slightly and kissed her cheek

Elena closed her eyes as he kissed her cheek, holding her breath as she felt his lips against her skin. As he pulled back, she wrapped her arms around his neck and pushed herself up onto the tops of her toes to place a sweet kiss on his cheek.

He smiled as she kissed his cheek but frowned as a sudden thought hit him "Elena, we can't tell anyone about us and our relationship"

She pulled back sharply, hurt clouding her expression. "What? Why?" she said as tears flooded her eyes and she stepped back from him.

He turned away sadly "because....because you'll become a target of bullies for liking me in that way. It's bad enough I'm a target, I don't know if I could cope with them picking on you too"

"News flash Joey," she said angrily. "I already am! I'm a filthy Mudblood remember?" she said shaking her head. "You know what, just forget it. If you don't want me you don't have to make excuses." She turned and began to descend the steps quickly, making her way back to her dorm room.

"No Elena" he rushed after her "I'm sorry about what I said. I didn't think, I was caught up in the moment"

She turned to him with tears in her eyes, swallowing hard. "It's fine Joe, I get it really. Let's just go back to being friends and forget this ever happened. We're probably just tired from the journey and all that," she said softly. "I'll see you tomorrow." With that she turned and went through the portrait hole into the Gryffindor tower.

"Elena" he held out for her as she vanished "I...I love you" he slumped down next to the portrait to wait for the Gryfindors to leave in the morning

a slow footsteps sounded down the night silenced hall, and out of the darkness came a familiar freckled mug.


"what is it your doin' outside o' the Gryffindor common room this late? Asked Leslie, her voice gentle as she notice his state. "you alright?"

"I always sleep here" he sighed "I'm not popular elsewhere so I sleep here, t get as close to my friends as possible"
