It was a dreary night like always. Something I always liked. The moon was out but you could tell there was just pain and anger in the air. The humans didn't like the vampires and I knew why. We take blood from them every two weeks to feed yourself. We also limit there food source. A truck comes once a month to the human side of the city. The trucks never come on the same day each time. It might come two times a month if there are lucky or in the beginning of the month or the end. There's limits of everything since the virus hit and everything was still trying to heal itself. The vampires pick curtain people to live inside the vampire area. The people who can work on the farms and get power and water running. But that's only for the vampire area. The humans are on their own with no power or running water.

As I walked through the human area no one was really on the streets and there was a good reason. It was because vampires come out almost every night to see if humans are stupid enough to be out and if so they would be fed on. Of course they wouldn't be killed but they would be drained quiet a bit. As I walked along I walked through the shadows trying to be not seen. It's not a good idea to have the ruler out who knows what the humans would try to do just to get free.

The moon was full, which appeared to be an uncommon occurrence in this day and age. The sky always seemed too dark to see the moon, but it brightly glistened down on their settlement this evening, acting as a hopeful reminder that there was still light in this gloomy world after all.

I relax next to the window of my home, staring out into the surroundings, curious as to what lurks amongst the shadows. Vampires came out entirely too often, feeding on the vulnerable and idiotic, demonstrating their power over the feeble humans. It's depressing, honestly, that we've been reduced to such circumstances. That we've been moved from moved from the top of the food chain to become meals.

I grab a small, handcrafted backpack and sling it over my shoulder before exiting through the back window. I'm taking a route to a house that lives near the edge of the settlement. There, an acquintance lives that trades food to others for valuable items that aren't readily available since the virus and vampires showed up.

I stay close to inhabited buildings, ensuring that I'm away from the places vampires typically feed. They're dangerous, but I've managed to avoid them every time I've ventured away from home. Despite everything, I have hope for the future and what it'll bring.

As I slipped through the houses and behind many of the trees and vines that have grown over I spotted a movement in the shadows. I figured there would be someone hiding behind all the nature and behind the houses. Vampires never really came back here cause it was just to much work to try and walk through all the veins. Hell some of the vampires would probably trip and fall on their face.

As I neared the moving shadow I was close enough to see it was a female. She seemed to know her way around here so she must have gone through here how many times. I smirked as my eyes went a Amber like color mixed with red. Being how many years old had its perks since I was a different kind of generation. Once I on,y only a house away from her I moved fast grabbing the girl by her backpack and pulling her into a wall pinning her there as my fangs came out. "Little late for you to be outside isn't it little girl."

Cerulean orbs widened when I was jerked by the backpack and pushed against a nearby wall. Hearing the voice close to my ear, I slowly relax at the realization that its a vampire. It's surprising, seeing as only thieves and other lowly criminals are the only ones prone to heading through these paths. "If you look at it that way, then it's always a little late to be walking around. No time is safe. It's just chance you happened to catch me, right?" She asked, glancing at him from the corner of her eye slowly.

She squirmed slightly, though she knew the attempts were futile. She sighed lightly. "Are you preparing to kill me? Act like a cat playing with their mouse for your own amusement?" She managed to get a better look at his face, staring at the amber orbs. She knew she if she managed to escape with just a little bit of injuries, she could still be in insurmountable danger. Few humans would help her, they were too fearful after all. And she was too far from her acquaintance's house to depend on her assistance.

I shook my head as I took a step back to get a better look at her my arm still pressed hard against her to keep her on the wall. "Well a ruler never gets to have much fun. Always having to deal with the human needs. You do understand us vampires have needs too. Even a ruler deserves to have some fun sweetheart so I suggest you stay quiet or I might just kill you. I could use you as a symbol. To show you humans really shouldn't be outside once that moon comes out."

"Now I suggest you be a good little girl and shut up." I smirked as I forced her head to one side to expose her neck. I leaned in as my lips softly hit her neck and my fangs ran over her skin. I took in the smell of her blood running just under her skin and that's when I inserted my fangs. A vampire bite always gave a human some kind of weird pleasure but with a small hint of pain. As I drank I made sure how much I too since I didn't need this girl just disingenuous right here on the spot. When I finished I pulled my fangs out running my tongue over the marks closing them back up and letting the girl slump to the ground. "Now where was it you were heading sweetheart?"

I slid down the wall after he was done feeding, my hand on the spot on my neck where I'd just been bitten. Though he closed the wound, I still felt the remnants of his fangs, reminding me of the violation I'd endured. I'd never been bitten before, and it just made me feel wrong how the vampires use us to quench their everlasting thirst. I leaned my head back and stared up at the cloudy sky, noticing some stars scattered here and there.

"Not that it's your business to indulge in my life's story, but I was heading to a....friend of mine. I can only see them during the nighttime because they work in the fields all day long." I retorted in response to his question, gripping the straps of my backpack tightly with my knees pressed up to my chest. "If you're such a good ruler, you wouldn't have to worry about the humans leaving during the night to get food. We're malnourished for a reason, y'know. Besides, if I died, I'd just be a symbol of your cruelty to our kind. Of your inability to lead." I snapped, placing my hand on the wall before trying to stand up. Despite this, legs are too weak to hold self up and I'm forced to sit back down to regain my strength for another moment or two. "Now, Your Majesty," says the term with venom in voice,"May I be excused from your presence?"

When she snapped I growled grabbing her by the thought pinning her more against the wall. "Listen here sweetheart. Your food. I don't care if you guys hate us. And I don't care if you guys have to go trade for food or whatever you guys do. I don't need to worry about you humans leaving the city either cause one step over that all and those who were infected by the virus will kill you like wild animals. So be killing one human wouldn't be a shock. And be lucky we even give you humans food. We only do it so we can feed yourself." I say releasing my grip from her neck. "So how about this. I'll let you see your friend whenever you want with no harm to you. But that means you would have to become my slave. Which means you listen and obey me. But you live in the castle or capital or whatever you humans call where the vampires live. So. We got a deal. You agreeing means no vampire can hurt you. You just have to obey me and allow me to feed on you if needed."

With my throat having been constricted, I found it hard to breath. Gasps a bit after my throat is released, taking in large gulps of air befoe scowling at the man with my arms crossed over my chest. "Why are you pestering me anyhow? You're the ruler. You can get anyone to be your little servant, and you have to go around picking on the humans that don't even do anything to you." I say, finally standing up as I continue to stare at the man.

"I suppose your proposition is better than my current state. Even if I didn't leave the city, I could easily get attacked by criminals or another vampire who'll leave me for dead. Even if I don't enjoy your company, it's safer to reside within your unfriendly abode. It secures me a better life. But, I propose one more condition...." I glanced over my shoulder. "I need to return home and gather my things. They may not be luxerious enough for you, but I worked hard for the things I own and they hold sentimental value. If you have any ounce of respect for whatever humanoid features you share with my kind, you'll allow this." My gaze flickers back to the vampiric being curiously.

"For one your a pretty girl. And I wouldn't be shocked if there's gonna be a guy or vampire that will take advantage of that. Plus if you become my slave. You will be under the protection of the ruler. Which means anyone that betrays that loses their life. Human or vampire." I say as I crossed my arms and looked at her. She was a pretty thing and she had an attitude on her which really wasn't a shock I guess.

When she thought of the idea and then in a way agreed and smirked. "Fine. I'll allow you to grab your stuff but I'll being going with so no funny business or whoever your little friend Is will have to deal with me. Which means death by me or I'll let him starve in a cell. You got it? Oh and my name is Kanin. So you can call me that. Not vampire, ruler or whatever else you have I'm mind."

"I suppose you're right...." I said after a moment, nodding slightly before turning towards the direction I'd just came from. "But, I'm not sure you need to visit my friend with me. He doesn't necessarily think you vampires are welcome in our city. Probably best we just go get my things and I'll pay him a visit when I know you're busy and can't come." I commented, beginning to walk the exact way I'd just came before glancing over my shoulder as I walked, shrugging.

"The name's Alexandra. People call me Lexi. You're probably not going to call me either....Not to sound like I want to act friendly to you, but isn't Kanin a little informal for a ruler? Like, shouldn't you be like,'Giant, scary King of the City that terrorizes poor humans forever' or something? I mean, can't I call you 'hey you' instead? Wouldn't that work the same as your actual name?" I turned slightly to get a better look at him.

"This whole area is my city sweetheart. So ill go where I please. And we will keep it Kanin. Everything who lives the the vampire area calls me that. Unless you wanna call me Sir which I don't think you do." I say as I walked along side her. "Plus I don't need you going around saying the ruler is out of the tower. We don't need people freaking out anymore then they should. And unless you say something to your little friend that I'm a vampire he should know who I am since, have you ever seen me before. Besides tonight? No. Cause I don't let you people know incase I need to do something and check how this area of my kingdom is. It's a reason why you will sometimes she people working on houses. I'm not as rude as you think I am Lexi."

"What's your definition of rude, Kanin?" I asked, walking with a soft sigh escaping my lips. "I don't know, I guess it's just crazy having you as a ruler." I shrugged, kicking at pebbles beneath my feet. "You keep us taken care of just enough so we can feed you all, but do you really care about anybody in this city besides your own kind?"

I watch the darkness, listening to the sound of our footsteps. "I suppose I should have rephrased. It doesn't like it when people come by without any business being there. If you come, you're just a tag along. Which, since you're the ruler, doesn't matter to you. And it's not like I'm going to force you not to come, I'll just discourage it." I stop at a window, opening it and slipping through it and working to gather my things inside the backpack. "Be careful if you come in. It's dark, so you could trip over something."

"Well let's see. Have I let your homes collapse? Have I given you old rotten food? Have I taken away everything like books and toys and everything from you? No. So if I didn't care I would have you living in holes. I take care of you to a point and then it's on your own. And yes i care more for my people but if I don't that means they come and kill you all. I make sure they only feed and let you live even if that means you go weak for Alittle. Would you rather be weak or dead?" I say as I stop infront of the window she jumped into.

I peaked my head in and raised an eyebrow. It wasn't the most gran house Iv seen but it seemed to do the job for living in. "I think I'll be fine just staying here. But you better hurry and gather everything or I'll have to drag you out if you take to long. I don't wanna wait here till a few minutes beFore the sun comes out." I say and lean on the side of the house. "By the way you will have to be marked to prove I own you in a way."

"Okay, fine, maybe you have a point. You give us enough, but there's always going to be something wrong with the way society is. If we had more food, your kind could benefit. Just like if we had better medicines filtering through the system. If less are sickly and more show excellent health then a vampire can get better nutrient filled blood. It benefits us because we're healthy and allows you guys to have better blood. I mean, weak is better than dead, but being healthier would make some things better for both sides."

I gathered most of my things before walking over to the window, poking my head outside and glancing over towards him as I leaned on the window sill. "Maybe I want to see you try to drag me out of this window. Give you a challenge, y'know?" I asked, slowly slipping outside as I stare at the sky. Night is slowly coming to a close. The sun will rise soon. It probably is best to start heading back. "What do you mean by that? Are vampires ultra possessive crestures or something?"

"The good thing I'm not sure o can control. We rely on the farms and since the winter finally ended we are just not able to start growing again so the food supply will be low for awhile. Once we finally get enough food then maybe there will be two trucks a month. But for now we have to give the amount that will keep you at least alive until we can grow more crops and everything. Now for the meds I guess your true. A reason I'm gonna upgrade the lab. So you guys might be getting better vaccines. We just gotta make sure it doesn't cause another deadly virus."

I looked at her then began to walk back to the vampire lairs. "The mark is to slow that you truly belong to me. If another vampire sees the royal mark then they know not to bother you and everything. In a way it's like your like my wife or something but you wouldn't be that special. The vampires just wouldn't bother you or touch you and the workers That work in the castle being you food and everything like that." I shrugged and made sure to walk along the side trails to get to the wall that seperated the vampire castle from the human homes.

"Well, I can understand the farming thing. Of course food production in the cold season is incredibly difficult and food can be scarce. But during the summer months the two trucks could definitely prove advantageous. The humans will feel better taken care of and the vampires can get better blood. Also, it's a good thing you can make alterations to medicine. It'll definitely help. There are only so many herbal remedies we can do with what we have. Especially when outbreaks of common diseases appear and everyone starts getting sick because they don't have the proper treatments to keep from getting sick or make themselves healthy again." I glance around as we walk, gripping the straps of my backpack as I exit the only place I've ever known. My home.

"Great." I roll my eyes, shaking head. "I get to have some mark that's the equivalent of being a vampire's wife. Why don't you go ahead and throw me in the dungeon?" Despite the words, I don't say them with any malice. Rather, I speak with indifference. "Can I still get married one of these days? Or do I have to live all my days at your side? I mean, I've had dreams of finding some nice guy and marrying them....So can that still happen?" I ask, hopefully.

"A lot of things were destroyed from the virus so you guys have to be patient. And chill out with the whole living in the damn castle. You will have your freedom. Would you rather me throw you in the dungeon where other vampires and poke you and touch you and probably kill you. The mark mainly means you can't be fed from and you can't be taken unless I have someone bring you somewhere." I say as we neared the wall.

I typed in a code as a gate opened. I pulled her inside as the gate slammed shut behind us. "As for getting married we would have to see. If you were to fall for someone it would have to be someone who lives in this area of the city. Cause you are not to leave and go past the gates."

"Yes, that's true. But, patience is a wonderful thing to have when there is also trust and loyalty. Humans are likely more irritable and afraid of your species simply because they're unsure of their feelings. That, or they feel open distaste for you guys and need reassurance or something. I don't know. It just seems like so many people are unhappy. Maybe just some reassurance can make them live a little....at ease. With the virus and everything that's happened, the city needs this." I say, blinking as I glance over my shoulder at the gate I'd just got pulled through. "Take a joke, Kanin. I don't care about the mark. So long as every vampire isn't messing with me, I'm fine."

"Oh....I see." I look around. "Maybe I'll find someone here then." I shrug slightly before glancing at him. "How come you aren't married yet? Can vampires ever be too old to marry someone? Are you even old enough to marry among vampire society?" I try to calculate how old he is in my mind, before giving up with the task. It's futile.

"Yes vampires can be married. And we are never to old to marry. I look like I'm 25 but I'm really older then 100 years. I've been married in the past but she passed in child birth. This how was long ago so the baby didn't live either. And before you ask vampires an have children." I say as I walked up to the large castle doors and they were opened by two large vampires. "Thank you boys" I say as I pulled her inside to look like I took her as a slave.

"Now you will have your own room. It will be watched by some humans. We have humans here that are fighter or warriors or whatever so you won't need to worry about vampires outside your door." I walked up to an elevator and pressed the button for the 15th floor. "You will be able to pick your own room. They aren't all the same some are smaller others are bigger witch different decorations and colors."

"I'm sorry you lost your wife and child. Thanks for answering the questions, even if it was hard for you. " I say, genuinely sympathetic towards the male as I looked around the elevator as we rode up to the 15th floor. I'd heard of elevators, and I'd seen some in the rundown buildings of town. They didn't work anymore, so people used the stairs. This was my first time riding in one. "Do you have stairs in this palace?"

"Can you show me the smallest room you have?" I asked when the elevator doors opened and revealed the floor. I poked my head out and looked around, noting the decor surrounding the hall. There was many doors that likely led to extravagent rooms where many luxurious items awaited use. She'd sometimes wondered what it was like living in such a mansion like this. It seemed uncomfortable, honestly. Such a place as big as this made it seem like a place that would never feel like home.

Yet it was her home. For now.

"Yes there are stairs but it would have been faster just using the elevator right now. And just be warned the smaller room won't be as small as the place you lived in. Your gonna have to get use to it" I say as I stepped out of the elevator and walked to the smallest room that I knew of with my hands behind my back. Guards began to walk behind me once I stepped off the elevator just incase I needed anything. As I stopped infront of the room I stopped and looked over to Lexi. "Tomorrow night will be when you get your mark. So your gonna have to get use to the sleeping patterns here. All the humans that stay here sleep during the day like us since the night is the most dangerous time. So get some sleep thank there should be a new pair of clothes for you when you wake up."

I nodded to her "Sleep well and if you need me my office is just around the corner. It's not hard to miss." I say as I turned on my heels and headed to my office. There was a few things I needed to clear up and work on and then it was off to sleep since the sun was gonna rise in an hour or two. Since I'm how many years old I'm able to stay awake only for an hour when the sun comes up but I am very weak at that time and only do it when it's needed.
