You get 15 for free, but you can buy more. Each Charm has a cost to activate it; usually Essence motes but sometimes it also costs Willpower or Initiative points. The Charm you activate has an Ability it is tied to, and they will also have prerequisite levels of your Ability and Permanent Essence.

Right now you guys are Essence 1, so any Charm that has a higher Essence is out of reach for you. The only exception to that is your Supernal Ability, and that treats your Essence as 5 for being able to buy up the more powerful Charms in that tree.

Spells can be swapped out in exchange for Charms on a 1-to-1 basis.

It will still take up one of the 15 you get at character creation. It just doesn't have any other Charms that must be bought before it.

The only 'free' Charms you get are your Dice Adder Excellencies. With each Charm you purchase for whatever Ability, you get the Excellency for it for free and it doesn't take up a Charm spot.

For a Solar, whenever you buy a Charm, like Sensory Acuity Prana for Awareness, you then get the dice adder known as an Excellency. For every mote you spend, you add one to your Attribute + Ability dice pool, up to a maximum of doubling the pool.

If you have a Melee or other attack Charm, that can be used to boost your to-hit pool.

Using Psychie's example of the Awareness Charm, if you are trying to spot something, you can then spend a few motes of Essence to raise your Awareness + Perception pool, up to a max of double the original pool.

Excellencies are described in detail on pg 255 of the main book.

Yes. If you have a Dex of 5, and a Melee of 3, you have 8 dice to roll to hit your target. With Charms, they add to that. The Excellency can then add (in this example) 8 more dice before you add in the effects of any of your other Charms for that attack. Excellencies are instant, and do not last more than the one roll you are making.

Hi Sherwood Sherwood . Been looking around, and I've noticed that when I try to access the OOC page from the main page, I get sent to the one for the 2e game.

Also, I'm not currently sure if I should go with Melee or War as my Supernal ability. I assume that we're eventually going to have armed forces of our own, if this is a redux of the previous game, but I don't know how long it'll take for us to reach that point.

I am really torn between using Steel Devil Style and just sticking with my regular ol' Lunar Charms. It would give me my 4 bonus points back that I used to buy the Martial Arts Merit. But if I keep the martial arts, I can also pick up Single Point Shining into the Void Style, which has an Essence requirement of 2 for the Form Charm.

Thoughts?
I dont remember much about steel devil style. But I think you could make the long name Martial work pretty well. Given its emphasis on speed, you could change the aesthetic a bit to match it with the theme of a scorpion. Quick deadly stings.

I'm having a bit of a mental block on determining what my Tell should be, but I'll have one listed soon, I promise.
Maybe a unique chitinous gloss to her skin, or a notable upwards curl in her hair that she cant get rid of. Or maybe her eyes are a solid black, like that of the bug itself.
