Realistic or Modern Together Again

Cold. It was so cold. But then again, everything was cold. Yui wasn't far from her 18th birthday, but she didn't feel happy like she should be. She tugged at her long sleeves, the cloth hiding the actual pain underneath them. She took a shuttering breath, rounding the corner, glad to see the stupid seniors weren't standing by her locker.

Quickly darting over to it she unlocked it, a flow of thumb tacks flowing out of the locker. Among those thumb tacks, was a note. She raised an eyebrow, squatting down to gently lift the note off the floor. Her mind immediately went to the bullies as she slowly opened the note gingerly. She looked at it, the handwriting looking familiar. She read the note, which said

Dear old friends,

Meet tonight at *Insert address* For a sleepover.

I am waiting

Confused, Yui folded the note and placed it in her pocket. She grabbed her jacket and zipped it up, deciding that she would go. After all, the only people who where her old friends was her old gang, and seeing them once before the 18th would be nice. Now you may wonder what the 18th is. Well, the 18th is the day that she planed to say goodbye. Goodbye to her old friends, to her family, and to the light.

The day of her 18th birthday.

She shuffled out of school, walking towards her empty house where she would pack her stuff for tonight.

Ryu finished putting the notes in the lockers, and walked to his own locker, grabbing his backpack from the inside. He walked out and headed home, setting up the house. He realized that doing this was a good thing. He was reuniting them. But they didn't know he was the singer of Dead Letters, or a boxer.

After he was done, he got his boxing stuff and headed out, going to the boxing place. He took off his shirt, put on his boxing shorts, grabbed his gloves, and got up. "Takeushi, your up!" The coach yelled. Ryu climbed onto the ring and got on the corner. His opponent was Mack "The Ripper" Chen. He may be big and muscular, but Ryu was way more powerful and fast. Also smart. When the whistle blew, he started fighting. Mack threw a punch at his stomach, but he dodged it and punched him.

I am a dolphin.

Sophia wheeled toward her locker, the effort making her arms ache. It had been a long day, and she was eager to get home. She had to reach up to turn the dial on the lock and open her locker. Her height didn't do much to help with her perpetual sitting position. She probably could have gotten a lower locker if she had asked, but she wasn't the type to talk to teachers and administration to make special requests. She already felt different enough; she didn't need the school's staff to think of her as a freak as well.

When the door opened, a sheet of paper flew out and fluttered to the ground. Luckily, Sophia managed to catch it before it reached the ground, saving her the embarrassment of having to ask someone to pick it up for her. Her eyes scanned the note, which was an invitation to a sleepover. For a fleeting moment, Sophia wondered if it was a prank. She didn't have any friends; who would leave a note inviting her to some party? Then she noticed the address, and it only took her a moment to recognize it.

Ps. (Right now Amaya is on a tour bus with her band. It was a year round world tour, but finally she has come back to her hometown for the final show.)

"Amaya....Amayyaaaa.... Amaya!" Jumping awake, her aqua orbs gazed around the tour bus's room. Her skin slightly wet, eyes a little puffy, tangled in her sheets, really it meant only one thing..Night terror. Trying to focus her vision, she rubbed her eyes with the back of her palms. Everything unfocused one second and the next her band member Jake was inches from her face. Inspecting her, his fingers on his chin in a thinking way if one may say it. His eyes full of questions though he knew not to ask. "Nightmare again?" Grinning she couldn't tell why Jake knew but, I guess it would make sense if she was the one in his position now. Falling back against her pillow she groaned, her hands out spread, avoiding the question. "Can't a girl get her beauty sleep?" Laughing, he threw the covers off her and she new what was coming, a lecture from her dear lead electric guitarist. "One: singers, bands, anyone in show biz will never get there beauty sleep, that is what stage makeup is for. Two: Honestly the way you sleep, I seriously think its bad for your health so getting up early in your case is a good thing." He had a point there, she hated sleeping. "And third, this came in the mail for you, the person that gave it to the manager said it was important." As he handed out the note, she reached out, one hand covering her left eye, almost lazy-ish. Reading the note, thinking it was more fan mail, but.....no it wasn't"t.

Dear old friends,

Meet tonight at *Insert address* For a sleepover.

I am waiting

Jumping out of bed, she almost fell off the bunk bed. Though Jake caught her before the fall, setting her down. "Hold your horses, where do you think your going??" He gave a boyish grin. "Go to the back and get ready, there is a show tonight, everyone else is ready except you. This is your hometown too right? Get excited." He chuckled. Looking around she noted that everyone was either sleeping except for Ryan who played the electric guitar, was driving the bus. Raising a eye brow at Jake who was just bored, him being his self. She gave a hug smile and then a wink, "Stop the bus!" the moment she said that Jake stared in shock as Ryan, jerked the breaks, almost having a heart attack thinking he hit a person or something. Moko the base, and Dylan the DJ, screamed like 4 year olds, thinking they were about to die. She loved them all like they were her own brothers.

"Thanks Ryan!" Turning she began to get ready for the sleepover, hearing Jake protest from behind. "What? But we have a show to get too, millions will be there, we can't just say ""Sorry because Amaya are lead singer couldn't make it, the show is off"". It's are last one for are world tour too." Looking back she laughed, "sorry Jake, this is important, the rest of the band won't mind. Lets just push it back a day. I have a new song I want to sing anyway, so I need you all to learn the lyrics and rhythm, the fans shouldn't mind." He gave a kind hmp noise and a half smile. "I have never seen you act this way.....fine, but be ready for World War three, CRUSHEZ against the fans." Amaya laughed, looking at him as she began to walk of to the closet. "I am."

Finally she was going to see her friends, her family.

The day had been long and grueling, but Archer was in no place to complain. Sure, the coach was riding out the players to their last breath, but they were definitely showing some improvement. The season had yet to start, and Archer could feel the winning goal at the side of his worn out cleats already. It hadn’t been too long since he’d left Track for Soccer practice, so there was no need to point out just how exhausted he was. Archer strode back to his locker down in the men’s locker room in order to change. There was no way he was taking a shower in the locker room. If he were to, there’s no telling if he’d ever be able to leave.

Combing the sweat sodden locks of “cotton candy” blue hair from his face, Archer sighed as he squatted to one knee and input his combination code. As soon as he opened the locker door, a card came gliding out onto the floor. He narrowed his eyes in confusion as he picked it up. What in the hell? Yumiko’s attempts at getting back together are gradually becoming psychotic. But it wasn’t from Yumiko. It was from someone he hadn’t think he’d hear from ever again. “Huh?” He muttered quietly to himself as he read over the contents of the invitation. “A sleepover?” And before Archer could put much thought into it, one of his teammates, Naoki, snatched the invitation from his hands and held it out teasingly.

“What’s this, Archie? A love letter from an admirer? Yumiko wouldn’t appreciate this at all, how about I take care of it for you?” Archer frantically reached for it, clearly peeved and irritated. “You nosy little brat! Hand that over right now before I bash your face in!” Archer hissed, playing along with the joke. The two chased each other around until the coach came in and separated the two for laps. “Damned Naoki! This is all your fault!” Archer grumbled as he started his laps. “It was just a joke. Don’t get your panties in a twist.” Naoki chuckled as he quickened his pace a bit, knowing damn well that Archer was going to kick his ass. “I’ll show you what ‘getting panties in a twist’ means!” Archer replied exasperatedly before chasing after Naoki once again.

The day had been devastating and horrific to others, while it was just plain and boring for Aleck. They had a long test, and as if it wasn't enough, it was in Calculus. Most student toiled and studied all night, which is evident due to the black circles under their eyes and their weak and sleepy demeanor. Aleck, on the other hand, had quite a pleasant sleep the night before. Not once did he open his books, nor did he even glance at his notes. It might seem arrogant, but the answers came natural to him. A guaranteed A+, and yet, he still felt hollow. This is not new to him. No matter how many achievements he achieve or praises he heard, he felt nothing. This is because it was not his choice. Those achievements have been set by his parents, and he had no choice but to do it.

After getting past the crowds of students who were still weeping and wailing because of their performance, he went to his locker. He was quite surprised to see a note in his locker. Oh sure, he received quite a lot of notes from admirers, but this one is different. It said to meet at an address for a sleepover, and he knew that place. It was a place that was dear to his heart, before the break up. He called his mother and did something he haven't done in a long time, make his own decision. "Hey mom, we have a sleepover at my friends house. We're working for a project." He said, knowing she won't be able to say no. After getting the awaited permission, he quickly went home, packed his bags, and without wasting another minute, drove towards the address.

(Sorry for the late post. I had class.)

Yui got home, walking as fast as she could. She would have run, but her frail body hardly prohibited that. She shakily opened the door, which was empty as always. She dropped her bag, taking off her shoes and running towards her room. She sighed, packing all the things she needed, plus her violin. She found that it made her calmer when she was tense, which is one of the things that crowds or talking made her.

Sighing, she wrote a note to her mom, sticking it to the counter so she would see it as she came home. So she sighed, slipping on a beanie to cover her long hair as she slipped on her shoes again, walking towards the address.

After three laps around the field (or so coach thought), Archer and Naoki were sent off with a warning and they continued about their day as usual. Both got out of their Soccer uniforms and into their dress clothes. As always, Archer had to drive Naoki home due to the fact that the idiot got his license revoked about a week ago after a fender bender (his 3rd). It's a known fact that driving under the influence can get you into a shitload of trouble, and yet he chose to ignore that bit of knowledge. Archer didn't mind though, it just meant that Naoki would have to pay the gas expenses for the next few months... and that was fine with him.

Once Naoki was dropped off at his place, Archer stopped by a pizza place to get some actual food for his siblings. Mom's probably been working hard the entire day. The last thing she needs to do is rush dinner and have it turn out a disaster. The wait hadn't been that long, and while he was idle, Archer decided to look over the invitation once again. Seems like it would be a nice get together. But what he feared most was that everybody would've changed drastically. He knew that he had. I bet they didn't even know that I liked sports. Forget that, I bet they doubted I could get into colleges! Scoffing at the thought, Archer poked his tongue at the inside of his cheek as he drove home.

A sleepover with the old gang might be a fun change in scenery. He needed a bit of relaxation after all. Letting out a shaky breath of air, Archer stepped out of his car and pressed the autopager on his keychain before walking into the house and setting the pizza on the kitchen table. "Come and get it, kiddos!" Archer called out just before rushing up the stairs to his room and packing. There was a hint of hesitation still left in the cavern of his mind, but he opted on shaking it off for now. What could go wrong?

Ryu left boxing, earlier than expected. He took a towel and put it over his head, walking out. He walked towards his house, with a sense of pride.

When he got to his house, he locked the door. He walked to his room, and put on jeans and his dress shirt with a tie. He actually lived by himself, so he can play ukulele as loud as he wants. He plugged in his acoustic-electric ukulele and played his bands new song.

I am a dolphin.

Sophia wasn't sure if she should go. She had a lot of homework, and it had been so long since she had last talked to these people; they were probably all completely different. Or maybe they were all the same, and only she was different. What if they didn't recognize her when she rolled through the door? She imagined their confused faces. Who's this strange crippled kid? she imagined them wondering. What if they didn't like her now? She was quiet and boring. Her paralysis prevented her from doing anything fun. What could she do at a sleepover?

She opened her front door and wheeled herself inside her house. She grabbed her backpack off the back of her chair and dropped it on the carpet by the front door. Her mother walked by just as the note fluttered out of her opened backpack, once again falling to the ground. She tried to grab it and missed. Her mother eyed the paper. "What's this?" she asked, reaching to pick it up.

"It--it's nothing!" Sophia stammered out, but before she could finish, her mother had already read the note.

"Oh, a sleepover!" she exclaimed happily. "That sounds fun. Have a good time, sweetie."

Sophia sighed. She didn't want to trouble her mom with why she didn't want to go. The discussion would turn to an argument, and Sophia would probably wind up going anyway. If she wanted to save herself some time, she had to fake excitement.

She smiled. "Yeah, I think it'll be fun." Then she turned her right wheel to turn herself away, and the smile faded. She wheeled herself to her room and called behind her, "I'll leave once I finish my homework."

After a angry call from Amaya's manager, she gave a thumbs up to her band sitting down on the couches. "He said he thought it would be fun, and that we will move the concert to tomorrow night." The whole band began laughing knowing she was joking for the manager when she said he was happy, instead was very strict, organized. Jake standing up and throwing her bag over his shoulder carried it to the bus exit "Well when you were on the phone with the manag-er-io, I made a phone call for a service to pick you up. It all set up so no one will know its you in the car." Something landing on her head (a black base ball hat), she looked up at Moko "you will need this for a disguise, and..."reaching into his pocket he grabbed a pare of black aviators. " these...don't lose those now, there my only pair." Giving a half smile, and a grin she looked at them all. "Thank you all so much. Really this means the world to me." Everyone almost saying "we know" at the same time causing everyone to laugh again. A shine catching her eyes she looked forwards the window. A black car pulling up besides the bus, and a bulky man stepping out. Looking just like a secret agent, her jaw dropped. "Jake...who the heck did you call?...."grinning he chuckled "A buddy of mine, why?" Looking to Jake then the man outside to Jake " are you a spy?" Totally shocked by her question he laughed "no, no I'm not, now go have fun, we will all learn the lyrics you wrote and be ready for tomorrow." Smiling she waved to everyone "see you guys tomorrow.!" Grabbing her bag, she went out side, the man introducing him self. Leading her to the car door. "Miss Sasaki, this was please, we need to get you to your destination before people start getting curious." A crowd of people flashing cameras, and screaming on the other side of the bus. Hiding her and everything that was happening. "Okay let's go". And they were off, looking into the widow, she sighed " Im almost there guys.."

Archer had forgotten just how difficult it was to pack. When was the last time he was required to pack? Honestly, even when he and his Soccer mates were sent out to Naples, Italy for their senior trip, he packed like about four outfits and that was it! Chuckling quietly to himself as he put the last of his essentials into his blue Nike duffel bag, Archer got to his feet and set the bag down on his bed. I can't leave without taking a shower. What kind of second 'first' impression would that make?

After his quick shower, Archer noticed just how cold it was. Maybe it was the adrenaline from earlier or the fact that he had a warm pizza pie in the car with him, but he hadn't noticed it before. And to think he was about to leave with just a futon. Archer packed an extra blanket, a heavier one in case the night's temperature would drop further. Once he was all dressed and ready, he slung the bag across his shoulder before running down to tell his mother about the change of plan. Of course she was fine with it considering he'd been babysitting for the past few weeks, it was the least she could offer him. He was off the hook.

Rushing out to his car in order to avoid the cold, Archer hurriedly took his keys out from his pocket and clicked the beeper before slipping into the driver's seat. His gaze snapped up to the small screen above the rear view mirror that displayed the temperature. And to his surprise [not], it was colder than a witch's teat. It should've been snowing by then, but luckily it hadn't. The last thing he needed to worry about was black ice. Shifting the car to reverse, Archer pulled out of the driveway before getting on his way to the address.

A knock sounded at the door. Sophia sighed. She'd barely had an hour to do her homework. She'd gotten most of it done, but she still had some studying to do. "Sweetie," her mother called through the door. "You ready to go?" Sophia reasoned that she could bring her school stuff with her. The sleepover would probably be boring anyway, or it would at least be that way to her. While everybody else talked and caught up, she would sit by herself away from the group with a textbook in front of her. She just hoped that she would be able to ignore their chatting enough to concentrate.

She wheeled over to her bedroom door and opened it. "Yeah, let's go," she said to her mom. They left the house and got in the car, which was--as always--an awkward transition from the wheelchair. Sophia told her mother the address once they were both seated and strapped in, and they drove off.

Yui shivered, her arms as cold as ice. She had a thick jacket on and a long sweater, but it wasn't enough. Maybe it was the fact that she was thin. But beauty hurts, as some would say. She shivered again, rubbing her arms. She sighed, her thin limbs. She tugged on her sleeves, trying to cover up as much as she could. She sighed, wishing she could walk faster.

Finally reaching her destination, she looked down at her bag and double checked that everything was there. She sighed, realizing she should probably stop dawdling around his door and nock. She sighed, lifting a shaking hand up to the door and knocking as hard as she could, which was not very hard.

Ryu heard the knock, so he stopped playing guitar and went downstairs to the door and opened it, instantly having a smile on his face. "Hi Yui! What's up?" He asked, motioning her to come in. Music was booming from behind him. His song, if they could tell. It was their latest single, "Ridiculous." He scratched his head, looking for others.

I am a dolphin.

Yui heard footsteps, her heart beat increasing as they drew near to the door. She took a deep breath as someone opened the door. Noticing that it was Ryu, she breathed out. She gave a weak attempt at a smile before walking past him and into the house. She placed her slim fingers around the tied strands of her hair, looking down nervously.

Her mom dropped her off at Ryu's house. Back in her wheelchair, Sophia rolled up to the front door. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, pleading silently in her head, Please don't say anything about the wheelchair. Please don't say anything about the wheelchair. She slowly reached up and knocked three times on the door.

Ryu went to get the door, and saw Sophia in a wheelchair. "Sophia! Hey!" He said enthusiastically. He looked outside after motioning her in looking for the rest of his friends. After all, couldn't start without any others!

I am a dolphin.

Sophia breathed a sigh of relief. He didn't say anything, she thought. Maybe it's not that big of a deal after all. She gave him a small smile. "Hi," she said meekly before rolling inside. "Is, um, is anyone else here yet?"

"Yeah." Yui said quietly, turning around to see Sophia in a wheelchair. She made another attempt to smile, waving bit. "Hi." She said dimly, her voice lacking luster or any form of confidence.

Aleck finally arrived at the house. This was the place they always hanged out in, a place full of hope and promise. Life before had been so simple, no pressure of any sort. The world could have ended, but they wouldn't give a damn. If only such things were still possible, if only life had not been cruel and unforgiving. He parked just in front of the house, hoping it won't get towed. He went over to the door. He could hear the music blaring and people inside talking, although they don't sound that many. He knocked on the door, waiting for whomever is going to open it.

"Hi," Sophia said, turning her chair toward Yui's dim voice. Sophia was shocked when she saw her old friend. She looked so different--almost...smaller. Sophia couldn't put her finger on what it was that was so different about Yui. She forced a smile and waved just as a knock sounded at the door.

Yui let her smile drop again, not making a move towards the door. It was rude to answer someone's door for them, so she simply clasped her hands and waited, looking down at her feet.

Sophia felt she should make small talk while waiting for more people to arrive. "So," she said to Yui. "What have you been up to these past few years?"
