John led Lacie through the winding streets, finally arriving at the small, cheerful building he’d spotted earlier—the childcare center. It looked perfectly innocent, painted in warm colors with a welcoming sign above the door. It was a far cry from the "knowledge center" Lacie had imagined, but he figured this place would do just fine.
“Here we are!” he announced with a grin, gesturing toward the door. “All the answers you need are right inside, Lacie.” He hoped his enthusiasm came off as genuine; the last thing he wanted was for her to pick up on his real plan.
“Why don’t you head on in? Oh, I’m sure there are plenty of knowledgeable experts here,” he said with a reassuring nod, holding the door open for her.
Once Lacie was inside, John found the caretaker and quickly pulled them aside. Leaning in, he lowered his voice. “So, the girl in the blue dress... yeah, she’s, um, a bit peculiar. Got a few screws loose, talks in third person, has... bunnies. Very curious, if you know what I mean.” He scratched the back of his head, offering an apologetic smile. “Would you mind keeping an eye on her for a while? I think she could use a bit of, well... guidance.”
The caretaker’s eyebrows raised, but they nodded, clearly used to the odd request or two.
Relieved, John threw a glance over his shoulder to make sure Lacie wasn’t watching him, then quickly slipped out of the building, moving as quietly as possible. As he put some distance between himself and the childcare center, a wave of relief washed over him, and he couldn’t help the grin that crept onto his face.
Finally! He was a free man! Freed from the endless questions, the constant staring, the bunnies flailing question-mark signs. With a lightness in his step, he strolled back down the street, even letting out a chuckle as he went.
