These Four Walls

"Maybe it's the drugs." He said sharply, "and the withdrawal from them." He turned away from her and began walking away. He needed to hide the gun, and he needed to find out whether or not he had failed in killing Sean.

Evie couldn't figure out why but her mind was finding Sam's behaviour very suspicious. She shrugged it off, figuring that it must be only because she had turned her detective mode on. She found everything suspicious when she had her detective mode on.

She went off to find Chloe. Chloe had said that she would help Evie.

Sam decided that walking home was the desirable option, and probably the best place to hide the gun. The area under the floorboards was perfect, and it ensured that the gun wouldn't get damaged. That was the main thing. If anything, he'd throw the gun away as quickly as possible, but Ethan wanted it back when everything about it died down.

When Sam got home he was glad to find that his parents were not around, and he walked upstairs to his room, and hid the gun under the loose floorboard.

Evie walked towards the woman behind the table with Chloe following closely behind.

"Can we get the information on the patient that arrived here at around.....", she checked her watch,"around 10:30? His name is Sean."

"Sean Waters", Chloe added.

"I'm sorry, Ma'am", the receptionist started to say. "The information is completely confidential-"

"Well, just tell us where he's taken to", Chloe interjected. "The teacher that came with him knows us. We're his classmates and just want to make sure he's okay."

The woman hesitated but finally gave the directions to the E.R.

Sam stared down at the floorboards, before covering the area that was loose with a rug. He smoothed it out and stood up, trying to pretend that nothing was happening.

He walked downstairs and out of the house, then grabbed his skateboard and set off in the direction of the hospital.

"What're you doing here, girls?", Mr. Sliver asked sternly.

"We just came to check on him, Mr. Sliver. We couldn't help but be worried. It happened right on the school premises", Evie replied politely. "How is he?"

Mr. Sliver pinched the bridge of his nose. "He's been taken for surgery. Apparently, the bullet missed his heart by half an inch. I tried to contact his parents but I couldn't reach them", he relayed the information before suddenly looking up. "You said you saw him outside?"

Evie and Chloe nodded simultaneously.

"Then you must've seen something", he said with hope.

Evie tried to remember what she had seen.

Sam arrived at the hospital soon enough, as it wasn't so far away from their house. He tucked his skateboard under his arm and walked over to the receptionist.

"Where is Sean Waters?" He questioned, in a slightly demanding tone.

The receptionist narrows her eyes, "the information is confidential and I have already-"

"Just tell me!" He was clenching his knuckles by his side, his face pale with nerves. "I'm a friend."

The woman must not have been very good at keeping confidential information, because she have him the directions, and he began to walk that way.

Evie was pacing back and forth with worry. Her mind was in a chaos.

"Evie, I was pointing out the most noticeable thing there", Chloe protested.

"You're basically trying to accuse him of murder!", Evie shouted but then quietened upon receiving multiple glares. She sat next to Chloe and leaned in.

"My brother might've done drugs and participated in a gang for some time, but that doesn't mean you can accuse him of murder!", she hissed.

Just then, she heard footsteps coming towards that hallway. A male figure.

Sam heard a loud yell from where he was headed, but not what they had said, which was good because he would have bolted right then and there if he heard someone was accusing him of murder.

He walked through the doors and into the hallway, and saw Chloe and Evie. He walked over with a confused expression on his face.

"Evie." He greeted, "Chloe." He said her name with a slight bit of venom. "What're you doing here?"

Chloe abruptly stopped talking and Evie found out why when she followed her gaze. What was Sam doing here?

Evie raised her eyebrows at his question. "I had told you I'd be visiting Sean", she replied slowly in confusion. "What're you doing here?"

Sam nodded his head in remembrance, "oh yeah, I must have forgotten..." He mumbled, looking down, then he looked up again and at Evie. "I came to visit Sean too. See how he is." He shrugged his shoulders, "can't help feel responsible, seen as I walked right past him and didn't hear anything. I could have stopped it if I hadn't been listening to my earphones." He sighed, and hoped that his story could be convincing enough.

Evie gave him a sad smile and said,"I feel the same. I saw him but, even though I couldn't have done anything, I just..."

She just sighed and looked at the double doors infront of her. She hoped he'd be okay.

Her mind wandered back to what Chloe had said but she mentally shook off the thought. Sam couldn't even hurt a fly! Okay, that was a bit of exaggeration but a murder was way out of the zone for Sam. He'd never do anything remotedly wrong. She scolded herself for thinking such things about her brother. He was even worried about Sean.

"When can we see him? Do we know if he's going to be okay?" Sam pressed, hoping to get as much information as he possibly could.

Somehow he'd need to get to Sean and either kill him, or convince him that he had been seeing things, that it wasn't him that did it.

"Mr. Sliver has gone to speak with the doctor", Evie replied, letting out another sigh. "We're going to be here for a while. I should probably call mom or dad and tell them where I am. Or have you already informed them?"

"No... I went home but they weren't there." He sat down on a chair across from Chloe, and leaned his head on his hand. His mind was preoccupied with the thought of being arrested, though part of him was ecstatic that Sean wasn't dead, but he knew he needed to finish what he had started.

Evie turned to Chloe. "You can go if you want to. I was kind of forcing you to stay, wasn't I?"

Chloe smiled at her. "You were", she admitted and then glared at Sam,"but I can't have you staying alone when a murderer is loose. He probably knows that you're trying to find him. It's not safe to stay alone."

"That's true", Evie agreed, oblivious of the look Chloe was giving Sam. "But how do you know it's a 'he'?"

"Just a guess", Chloe replied, shrugging.

Sam pretended not to notice the look that Chloe gave him, trying to look as innocent as possible, he looked over at Evie. "Yeah, statistically it's men who kill or murder." He agreed, then looked at Chloe. "She won't listen though, she'll head off in the middle of the night trying to find the guy, like she did when we were kids. Remember, you thought that there were monsters so you went to try and find them?"

Both smiled at the memory.

"But turns out that the humans themselves are the monsters", Evie said bitterly.

Chloe looked at Evie. She was taking this incident way too seriously.

"Maybe you should inform your parents now", she suggested, making Evie nod and go out with her phone.

Sam looked down at his lap, messing with his fingers. "Yeah..." He didn't want his parents to know where he was but it was inevitable. He just had to figure out what to do.

There was silence in the area for a while after Evie left.

"Look, I didn't like you since childhood probably", Chloe started bluntly. "And that's probably why I'm getting this feeling that you had something to do with this attempted murder. I just want you to know that whatever you do affects Evie in some way. Just.......remember that and don't hurt her."

Sam looked at Chloe and narrowed his eyes, "I had nothing to do with it." He said angrily, "I walked past Sean and I didn't see or hear anything." He looked away from her and sighed. A plan was beginning to form in his mind, though it was a daft one.

Chloe shrugged at him. "Just warning you", she said. "You shouldn't get all riled up about it."

Just then, Evie returned back with a sad face.

"We've to go, Sam", she said. "Mom and dad are apparently out so they're asking us to take care of the house."

Sam groaned, "fine. Fine." He couldn't argue with her, or else she would realise that he had everything to do with it.

He stood up and put his hands in his pockets. "I have to stop somewhere though, so I'll meet you at home." He picked his skateboard up from the floor and walked out of the hospital.

"Maybe we should inform Mr. Sliver first", Chloe suggested and walked towards the room where their teacher and the doctor had walked to.

Evie followed her. Chloe stopped outside the room and gestured Evie to go in. Evie pursed her lips and peeked in.

"Mr. Sliver, I think we should go now", she told him and he nodded but before going, she looked at the doctor. "How is Sean now, Dr. Philips?"

"He's fine now", the middle-aged man replied. "He's out of danger but currently unconscious. And we don't know when he'll wake up. You should go take your rest at home, dear."

"Alright, but could you tighten the security around him?", she asked. "And please let me know when we can see him."

The doctor nodded and they left.

Sam knew the whereabouts of Sean's gang, but he decided to head to Ethan's instead. However, this was not for a drug call, it was for help. Ethan had been the one to make Sam shoot the guy, so he could get him out of it.

He felt the wind blow through his hair as he travelled, his mind in a completely different place. He was planning on asking Ethan to get one of the younger boys to take the blame, the ones that literally would die for Ethan. He knew he shouldn't, but he needed to. He couldn't go to jail.
