The Vet and Criminal JustadashxGuySouvlaki

Kali scoffed, "just shut up and put the money in your shoe... You would a probably die without me," she knew it most likely wasn't true, she knew he could get by, but it would be nice to be able to be among people that knew who you were rather than be among people you have to hide from. And besides, she didn't plan on getting caught by the cops. She was going to drive out of town on an emergency farm call... She hoped anyways, the key was to look like you belonged there and not like you were running off.

Straightening up and throwing on a jean jacket she got into the drivers side of the jeep and waited for him to get in.

"O.K." He said simply still feeling guilty but understanding he couldn't change her mind about it, at least he had company. He did what he was told regarding the money he was given placing it in his shoe and entered in the passenger seat of the car."It is your life spend it anyway you want. Don't say i didn't give you a chance. Lets go on a road trip." He put on his seatbelt suddenly feeling nervous.

She ignored the comment about her life, she knew it was her own, and she was tired of living in the shadows and no one knowing the real her. This one almost like a breath of fresh air for her. "Just incase anyone asks, you have a cow in labor that is having some major issues and come to town to get my help," she said as she put on her seat belt, pushed the garage door opener, and backed the jeep out. She started down the road out of town. Out to freedom.

"Understood. Farm, cows sick and is having a baby. Got it. "he said looking out window at the town rolling by him. He felt more exposed as ever, fearing that some bystander would look at him through the car window and instantly make him out as the criminal. He leaned on the door resting his head on his hand in a way that covered the side of his head. He needed something to get his mind off his worry."What made you become a vet?"

"I just wanted to make a difference in peoples lives. I would have become a doctor if I could have but healing patients that talk about it, isn't really a good idea. I would have been turned in within a few hours. Some people are okay with the gifted, but most are afraid. And with some gifts I have seen, I can't say I really blame them, but, the people with them aren't any different than people without. Some are good... some are bad... But... Thats the reason I became a vet, it makes people happy to get a healthy animal, and the animal isn't able to turn me in. It is a win, win situation for everyone... and besides... I love animals to death. I would have one of everything if I could." she smiled thinking about all the animals she helped. "What did you do before you.... I don't know... what do you do now? Other than run from the cops?" she asked truly curious.

"Nice sentiment, a bit cliché but what is really wrong with that? And it is a pity you are limited in the use of your powers. I believe you can do a lot of good. Be the next Nightingale or something."He said genuinely."Me...Well i used to work with a different kind of wild animal: Teenagers. I was a high school teacher, teaching chemistry to middle year and seniors. Some time i did biology to sophmores and was the swimming club couch."

Kali shrugged, "yeah, it is a bit cliche but it's the truth, if I couldn't make a difference in people's lives one way, I would do it another and the only reason I am limited is because of people that are afraid, hopefully soon, I can do a lot more good, though I would never compare my self to Nightingale... But a high School teacher..." She gave out a small whistle, "I am not sure I have the patients to put up with them. Just little know it alls... Until they need your help, and then you are the saint that knows it all... Nope, I was never good with dealing with immature kids. Give me a toddler any day." She laughed a little bit. "But why a teacher? Or why that age group?"

"Haven't you noticed? I am a glutton for punishment." He said chuckling be for spending a moment in thought."The reason is difficult to describe but i guess i will start with the age group: I am like you, i can't stand immature kids especially young children. But teenagers...Sure some can be rambunctious, others thought which want to learn you can speak to in their level and know you getting through and influencing them. Hopefully for the better since its is a crucial stage in their lives. Before high school you learn what everyone learns, it is now you decide were you specialize.

This leads to the reason why teaching...Well, in my high school days i didn't know what i wanted to do and was a troublemaker. I got the attention of a teacher during a time in detention, she tried to find me a path. So.. Yeah you can fill in the blanks here. I had some skill in science subjects so yeah. Eh, it is not as glamorous as saving lives but i do guide them."

Kali nodded "good reasons, though I still don't think I would have the patients for it. Teaching definitely takes a special kind of person. I am glad you got to Do what you wanted and liked... Even if it was for a limited amount of time." She paused thinking and running her fingers through her hair, "maybe at this place we are going we can both do what we want, I am sure they will have kids there that need guidance... probably more now than ever, with being shunned from society." Kali fell into silence, thinking about the different people they might meet, hoping that they would accept them, that for some reason they wouldn't shun them as well. She didn't know why they would and it wasn't a big fear, but it was still there in the back of her mind.

'Well, even if they do, at least I have something to come back to... At least I still have my job and my 'normal' reputation and can make a good living... Him on the other hand... What does he have... Nothing really, they have to accept him in the least, at this point he has no choice, at least I still have one for the most part' she thought as she stole sideways glances at him.

"Imagine the class attendance and general behavior when they find out their new teacher is wanted for murder. No one will speak or backtalk a pip."He joked with a grin but his delivery seemed forced like he didn't really want to make a joke. He signed."That is if there is a community to find. A wild goose chase for nothing... Maybe it would have been better to turn myself in. At the very least its free room and board."

"Well, unless you announce it, I don't know how they will find out. I am sure not going to tell them anything. That choice is yours to make... As far as whether there is something here," she sighed and shook her head again, "I don't know, I know that when I searched it, I didn't see anything. That doesn't mean I didn't over look something but... Eh, I am a bit skeptical." She fingers tightened around the steering wheel as her mind raced, going in a different direction, "my fear is, is that this is a trap set by the government. Them spreading roomers, to trap the gifted. I have heard on the news that 'many gifted were found in one location' I am not sure that they were necessarily 'found'... I don't know... Maybe I am just paranoid..." She tried to ease her mind, unsuccessfully.

"I truly doubt that is the case. The haven't gone to manhunt gifted yet...Though thats just local news taking"He replied, pausing when he heard sirens blaring from behind. He looked in the rear view mirror seeing cars move by to let a car with the blue lights flashing. He turned his head away from the side mirror to face Kali. Despite the situation, he found himself looking at her more closely than he planed. Her in his view seemed to easy the panic of the approaching car, which turned out to be hospital vehicle. He looked ahead again instantly after the realization, slightly embarrassed."Besides...If it does so happen we are caught together: you are my non gifted hostage who i forced to takes to the enclave. You better be prepared to sell that."

Kali didn't know if it was just the local news or if there was more to it but she didn't say anything, she was tired of arguing. When she saw the lights in the mirror she pulled over like the rest of the cars and let it go on past her and to the hospital. She watched it go past and then pulled back onto the road once it had. She had not realized he had been looking at her. "Me, a hostage? Ha! I think I could take you with little issue," she said trying to lighten the mood, "and besides, If it came to that, you know they wouldn't care about killing one innocent person to kill a gifted. With me being your hostage, you are just confirming they have something to fear. But if that is the route you want to take if faced with that, then I will play along... As long as I think it is working." She hoped it wouldn't come to that, she hoped either they found gifted people or they didn't find anything, she didn't wasn't any of this other crap they were thinking up.

He shrugged.

"We 'll have to wing it as we go along and hope for the best, i suppose, can't do much else. Got me this far...Just barely i admit. "Everything happens for a reason." my dad used so."He said a slight sadness in his voice before smiling."Speaking of which anyone you are leaving behind you might want to contact? Parents, siblings....Significant other?"

"Yeah, winging it is going to have to be our motto until we can get to a stable area, and I agree with you on everything happening for a reason, whether we like or understand the reason doesn't matter, but there is always a reason." She paused thinking about his last question, thinking about her parents, it had been so long since she had seen them, she shook her head, "I have no one, I left my home when I was 18 to make sure my parents stayed safe. Trying to keep them out of harms way. I send them letters once in a while to let them know I am okay and that I love them but, I never give a return address. As far as I know they could have both died. So no, I have just myself and my belongings." She looked in her rearview mirror to make sure they weren't being followed, "we are almost out of town, just a few more miles."

"Really? Already? Huh...Thought i we stopped or at least spotted at least once before we got to this point. Not really a good showing for the police of this city, condemned an innocent man and are incapable of capturing him."He commented also looking around for any police presence."Still, i guess its more credit to us then a damning to then. If finding you are the reason for my beating you treated, it be glad to be beaten again...."He paused letting quite fill the car for a little bit. "A word of advice, if you still have a chance to contact family you should...This is from one who can't..."

Kali didn't know what to say when he said about her being the reason for him getting beaten, she could take that so many ways, so she decided to touch on his second comment instead, "as long as I have paper and pen to write I will always be able to write my parents. Have no fear of that," she gave him a sly smile then with her smile fading she asked "you cannot write them because that is your choice or because they have both passed? Do you have other family? Sisters or brothers or cousins?"

"Yeah. Father passed on through cancer when i was in college...Mother died almost exactly a year later some sort of sudden heart attack but i think it was because of dad."He said sadly looking out the front window. "Still have a brother but he is working in Europe, havent spoken after our parents death. Must have some other extended family but for the life of me i dont remember them. I am bad with names. Had an ex wife but...Well...Nevermind."

"Yeah, it is hard for someone to live without the one they love, I am sorry to hear about both of your parents. But maybe you could write something to your brother? Just to let him know you still care? That you haven't forgotten him or something. I don't know, I don't have a brother so I don't know what the communication is like between brothers." She paused for a second and then added, "I don't know the situation with your Ex-wife but you could maybe, send a letter apologizing for words said in anger? Get it off your chest? Again, I don't know the situation but, it's just a thought." Kali let the car slip into silence hoping she hadn't said the wrong thing, she wasn't trying to make him mad or sad, just wanted him to see all of his options.

"Nah, brother relationship is fine spoke to him through skype a day or two before the murder. Heh, i wonder how a conversation with him now would sound: "Oh hi bro! Hope your well. Oh hey, just so you know i am on the run for murder. So i have that going for me. You?"" He said before letting out a chuckle before sighing. "The ex wel... She is a bit difficult to contact, unless you have a medium. She was one was one of the victims of the murder. Hence part of the suspicion on me, jealous ex and all that."

"Oh... I am sorry to hear that... That can't be an easy loss... Whether she was an ex or not... But I pray that it wasn't one of your children that got killed?" She knew it didn't really matter, seeing a dead child was hard no matter what but it would be even harder if it was one of your own. Trying to lighten the mood a bit she put on a half smile and said "well, it looks like I got the good end of the deal, parents are alive, though I won't allow them to contact me, and I don't have any ex's to worry about getting framed with their murder."

"No. They were from her second husband. "He said giving her an unamused look."And yeah, lucky you. Oh Whoopie Doo." Finding his mood to talk lessening he turned away and looked to the side mirror, watching the last of the city drive by. However the once was a quick journey began to slow down as traffic began to build up ahead of them as sirens began to gradualy appear on the horizon."Crap, a checkpoint. Best hope it is just a drug search."

Seeing that she had said the wrong thing Kali did not press to carry on a conversation and Let the car slip into silence. When he pointed out the check point she opened the glove box in front of him and pulled out a pair of plain sunglasses, "here, put these one and act like you're asleep. Don't say anything unless someone wakes you. Let me talk..." As they pulled closer and closer to the check point Kali felt her heart beating faster and harder. She hoped this would be quick and without issues.

Kali did what he was told. He put on the glasses and leaning his head on a side board though did not close his eyes hoping the glasses would be enough for the sleeping effect. As the approached the checkpoint, he saw one of the officers waiving them over to a parking spot. He felt the officers eyes on him as the officer moved to the driver side of the car.

"License please."The officer requested simply.

Kali smiled as she dug in her purse for her license, "here you go officer," she said as she handed him her license. "What seems to be the issue? I have a sick cow that is in need of some medical attention." She was hoping he had been right, just something simple she hoped in the very least she could smile and talk her way out of it. Usually she was pretty good at that. And this officer was about her age and not wearing a wedding ring...
