The Hydora Campaign

Shogun's missiles fly out and score deep wounds in the armor, but the armor is still in the thousands of points worth.

Once more, as you make your attack run, there is another volley of lasers that try to blast you out of the air. Beat a 16 and you'll evade both the shots you are going to be hit by.

Trusting to sheer velocity, Shogun banks hard and guns the engines to clear the monolithic ship's hull and turn back to approach from a new attack vector.

(die roll) + 8 (Dodge bonus) + 6 (Training bonus) = 29

Cypher lets out a 'Whoop!' as Shogun deftly evades the defense lasers. She calls out over the radio, "Guys, with this nickel and dime action, we are going to be out here all day. These Valkyries and the FPA are all missile trucks; and we're not being charged for each bullet spent. So, lets dump some ordinance on this fucker and take it out before we get swarmed by those Bioroids."

Parino Zairine

"Happy to," she replied, "as soon as Ghost is up and running." She grinned evilly. "Then we make them hurt."

As the group begins to pummel the engines, the ship continues to maneuver, slowly closing in on the capitol ships of the REF fleet. Bringing its heavy guns to bear, it begins to engage the screening force of the Garfish cruisers. Fortunately, the ships have all recently been upgraded to include a small version of the famous Pinpoint Barrier system, a self renewing force field that can be steered across the hull to block incoming shots. While not as powerful as the larger systems in the Arc Royal and John Stennis class ships, it is still enough to keep the worst of the damage away from the hull.

Also, a squad of Bioroids have flown in to take up positions around the engine section of the ship, trying to use their numbers to be able to engage you as each ship makes its attack run on the transport ship. So far, there is a Red, a Green, and ten Blues all on hover sleds doing their best to intercept you.

The second ship is closing in on the Northamption, and the frigate has little choice in the matter other than to begin using its own main batteries to engage the Robotech Masters ship. Other REF ships begin to pour fire into the lead transport, hoping to disable it before any serious casualties are racked up on the allied side.

Ghost grins savagely as his systems come back on line. "Ghost is up and hot. Firing mini-missiles at those engines. Smurfette, I'm fine. Hit this sucker." He slams his throttles to the bore, heading for the engine mounts. As soon as he's in range and the targeting caret goes green he launches all available mini-missiles at the engines.

Roll of 10 +7 = 17

I've forgotten how many missiles he can launch in jet mode, but he's firing the max amount.

One by one, the amber and red lights on the control console turn green, showing that the fire control system is back up and ready to fire. Targeting with the mini missiles, Ghost pulls the trigger and you can feel the fighter shudder as the mass of ordinance flies out.

Again, the point defense lasers track on you and fire off a spray of lasers.

Ghost slips the Valkerie left, then hard up as he cuts the power allowing the Valkerie to vector freely for a moment, then hitting the throttles full. He jinks in and out, evading the fire easily.

Roll of 11 + 8 = 19

With a wild flip, you are able to completely evade the laser barrage. As you pull up, you can see that there is some serious damage done to the engines. You are over half way there to completely disabling the ship, leaving it stranded in space.

The squadron of Bioroids also decide to get into this fight, and they pour fire out on the retreating Valkyrie. The speed and maneuverability of the veritech is enough to keep you free of holes in your hide as you spin through space.

The moment Ghost had all systems up Zairine punched her thrusters and accelerated toward the bioroids. She saw Ghost's missiles shoot out and hit, and she saw the return fire but he dodged nimbly. She breathed a sigh of relief that he wasn't paralyzed anymore. She followed his dodge with an attack of her own. She got close enough for her own missiles, locked onto the damaged points Ghost had made then fired. Once the missiles were away she performed a backflip like a diver coming off a diving board and twisted out of any return fire in a serpentine fashion.

ouch, not very good rolls there. I might need to go back to the online thing I was using.

How many missiles do you fire? You have 126 split up between your four launchers.
As with the other fighters, there is counter fire as you salvo off your missiles, but their targeting system is obviously not set up to track a flyer as fast as the FPA, and all three shots go wide.

Parino Zairine

She frowned at the lack of acceptable damage, something was off, either she was or her instruments were. She had just shot off as many missiles as she could in one go and the damage should have been spectacular. She also felt the heat of the return salvos just a bit too hot.

The most you can fire at one time is 12 from each launcher, for a total of 48 in one salvo. As you launch, your powered armor is briefly obscured by smoke and the sight of the massive swarm of ordinance launching off, almost as if the unit had exploded. The whole lot slams into the aft section of the ship, causing grievous damage. The engines are in sad shape. Another launch like that one will probably do the trick.

Zairine's missile salvo causes Ghost's mouth to go dry and his heart stop. Ohgodohgod, what failed, what hap- The thought snaps off in relief as he sees the missiles swarm toward the ship and the FPA unit dive nimbly out of the point-defense fire. Note to self, when you know she's firing at something, don't panic at the fireball.

He hurls the Valkerie around for another run at the engines. Throttles at full he screams in, locking on to the damaged engine, triggering another full salvo from his mini-missiles as the caret goes green.

Roll of 14 + 7 = 21 to hit. Another full salvo if he's got the missiles left, as many as he can otherwise.

On this attack run, you empty your wing pods of mini missiles, and watch with a grim smile as dozens of the little balls of death fly out, peppering the engines with massive damage. A series of secondary explosions begin to rumble across the hull as the damage passes critical, and the entire back quarter of the ship seems to go up in pure light! The massive transport is now floating dead in space.

The radio lights up once more. "Good job Hydra! Engines are out, and it looks like their main power is down since they are not firing anymore. Break off and pull back. Remember, we are trying to play nice with there guys. Wait one." There is a few moments of silence, the the signal resumes once more. "We have lost contact with the Garfish class Rhabwar. They are accelerating towards the inner system with a part of their fighter screen, but they are not responding to our hails. Can you do a fly by and try to establish contact? Find out why they are out of formation and off the air. Intercept vectors are being transmitted." Cypher punches up the data on all of your heads up display. "Got it Foxhound. Transmission received, and an intercept course is on screen. Lets go Hydra."

"Roger, Ghost is en route." He forms up on Shogun's wing and heads for tbhe Rhabwar as fast as he can. He looks around for Zairine's FPA just to reassure himself she's still there and in formation, then focuses on the flight to the new target.

Parino Zairine

They were good, they were really good and she couldn't help but grin, even as the news of the silent ship was broadcasted over the radio. She pulled up the coords for the Rhabwar and locked into position. "Roger, Ghost is en route."

She formed up into position. "Roger, I fly and see if I get hail." She didn't ever do things by halves and it never occured to her to accelerate slowly. She punched her thrusters and sped as quickly as she could towards the silent ship.

The FPA is nearly twice as fast as the Valkyries you are flying with, and you are able to quickly outdistance the REF mecha. Soon, you can get a visual on the Rhabwar as it continues its course into the inner system, and you can see that there is a patrol of three Alpha/Beta combos escorting the ship, all flying at the Beta's top speed of mach 8. You pick up no radio signals from them as you get closer, and there is no response to your signals as you try to contact the ship or its escort fighters.

Transmitting all you data back to the others, Cypher is able to see what you see, and makes the observation, "They seem to be using directional lasers to send signals back and forth, not their radios. I wonder why? The lasers are more secure; but harder to use. Whats going on here?"

"Oh, I've got a bad feeling about this....anyone know who's aboard that ship? I'm wondering if there are some Robotech Master sympathizers aboard who are in control now..." Ghost flies on, knowing he's likely about to have to fire into a 'friendly' ship, just because someone's stolen it.

Parino Zairine

"I no know." She looked at her own instrument panel. "Show me laser communication, I maybe talk and find out."

She smiled despite herself at Hiro's lament. "Is good I am here first, if sympathisers I can pretend. Many Zentraedi out here, I am one of many. Why I no support Robotech Masters? No worry, I be careful, I'm not stupid." The last bit was mainly for Hiro, to whom she had made the promise that she wouldn't be careless. She didn't think he'd appreciate it if she got herself into a position where she'd be in some sort of danger that could have been easily avoided.

At the intel regarding the unusual behavior of the Rhabwar reached Shogun, he quickly broke off his attack and hit full thrust on an intercept vector. As he went, he opened the internal comms, "Cypher, see if you can't get a run-down of the ship's crew complement from command. You know what I'm looking for."

And he was sure that he didn't have to ask Sharon to pay attention to the number of Zentraedi crew and their ranks aboard the errant vessel.

"Hydra squad from Hydra Two, ROE when dealing with the Rhabwar is 'do not fire unless fired upon'. Let's not assume there is some sinister motive for their actions. I repeat, do not fire unless fired upon. Approach from one of her blind spots at best speed."

As Cypher punches up the info on the ships crew, Smurfette has a chilling moment. The ships targeting sensors are locked onto your powered armor, a very unfriendly act, one step away from opening fire. In fact, you can see that you are being tracked by the ship's point defense weapons, and even the heavier guns are swinging your way. You are fairly sure that you can evade any of the shots, but it is still disconcerting to see it happen.

"The Rhabwar is under the command of Captain Julian Vega, a veteran from the First Robotech War under Admiral Gloval on the SDF-1. He does have a small group of Zentraedi on board the ship, but I doubt that it would be enough to capture the ship. Wow. Look at this. From the XO down, there is a whole list of people with a load of discipline reports. You'd think that they were trying to form their own Black Sheep Squadron with all the troublemakers on board. Do you think that they are making a run for it with the ship?" Her voice is full of astonishment at the thought.

"A run for it? Or a run at starting a war? Either way, they need to be stopped. Suggest we target engines again." Ghost listens in bafflement as Cypher's information replays in his brain. What happened that so many discipline cases would be assigned together. They were supposed to be seperated and thus watered down by distance from each other, not distilled into a single crew. This is likely going to be an expensive lesson.

Parino Zairine

She immediately took evasive action without actually looking like she was taking evasive action. Her heart, which had begun to slow down was speeding back up. She didn't bother with English, but went straight to her native tongue. <<Cypher, I really need to figure out how to talk to these people using their lasers things. I've got ordinance locked onto me and it ain't friendly. I'm moving out of the way and I can easily avoid anything they throw at me but I need to be able to hail them as friendly. Or something. Get onto command, will you, ask them how they want me to proceed. I repeat, these guys aren't being friendly.>>

Cypher gives Smurfette a quick rundown on how to use the laser communicator. "Usually it is only used for secure communications at long range. The only reason that they would be using com lasers in short range is to keep us from hearing even a scrambled transmission."

As you are looking over the exterior of the ship, the three sets of veritechs are taking up trailing positions behind your powered armor. They, too, have their targeting radar locked on you, and it is enough to send a chill up your back.

Then, you realize that you are getting a text message from a short range belt phone. It is one word only, and it says, "Mutiny."

As you get this message, all hell breaks loose as the fighters and Rhabwar all taking shots at you. From the Garfish, there is a salvo of six point defense lasers and a shot with the main battery. From Alpha 1, there is a series of blasts from the gun pods from both the Alpha and Beta. From fighter 2 is a salvo of six medium range missiles. From fighter 3 is a shot of 12 short range missiles.

You can dodge the six medium range missiles, but the twelve short range are going to hit unless you use an action to shoot them down.
