Im not sure theres 50 ranked Sages, but ill simply allow it, cuz it seems to suit your character that hes ranked 50 (note that probably means he's *insanely* weak compared to others tho lol..)

true but peeps are getting recruited all the time, why would he be given a rank over others if he doesnt show anything? If he doesnt have like magic (aka a specific magic) then he really probably shouldnt have a rank at all yet

If you couldn't tell I sort of based Nathan off of Naruto. I don't know if you've watched the anime or manga or anything but basically this is the gist.

Naruto is an orphan because a powerful monster attacks his village one day. His father, the leader of the village, dies by sealing the monster into Naruto to save the village.

Years later Naruto grows up and he sucks at basically everything. Its because the monster basically is so powerful it disrupts Narutos abilities to learn how to be a good ninja. That's why its extremely hard for him to keep up with his fellow students.

This is an idea for now, but I was thinking kind of the same thing. Nathan's biological father dies but before that contracts a power spirit within his son. The spirit is still dormant, but it's presence disrupts Nathans natural magic ability and reduces it to a dwindle of its full capabilities.

its fine its mostly a nitpick, that just cuz theres magic, doesnt mean our characters should have no struggle doing anything at all XP (such as travel), i was just mentioning that

Ive seen Naruto
But spirits and demons in this world dont usually dwell within a person, they live in their own realms (usually), so maybe your guy's father sealed a spirit/demon into your character, which.. is interesting, and fine, as its different

but that has nothing to do with him being given a rank in The Collective. Without any magical abilities being displayed he wouldnt be ranked. ESPECIALLY by The Collective, which is all about Order and being precise with rules and traditions and things. Your character actually has to seem you know.. Sagely to be considered a Sage.

If hes a whiny brat and has no evident magical abilities, they wouldnt rank him. That doesnt mean they think hes incapable of magic, only that hes incapable right now of magic.

If he were a girl, then yeah The Coven would probably be like "Oh I saw him do magic, sure rank her 50, whatevs." As theyre far looser with that sort of thing.

yah he can be working towards a rank

Single Digits are S rank
teens are A rank
twenties are B
thirties are C

Theres a thing called "Magic Power" (like Mana basically). Spells and stuff take magic power to use, if you run out you cant use magic for awhile, until it replenishes. So magical travel like that would take up quite a lot of magic power to use.

I understand the concept of magical power and hard magic systems, but I my thought process was that it would take a lot of energy to sustain a portal not to open one. My kind of understanding was making one took a moderate amount, holding it open for more than maybe a minute would take an increasing amount of energy.

nah making it takes a lot and so does maintaining it open

that stops everyone from just using portals all the time everywhere for everything
