Realistic or Modern The Beginning of the End

Mark didn't have anything else that he wanted to do other than get a bigger gun, so he made his way upstairs to the armory and grabbed himself a sniper rifle, and then made his way back downstairs and ran out and into the back of the car beside John. "I'm good to go." He said softly, leaning back with a yawn as he put the rifle down on the floor between his legs. (@AvidElmV2)

Maria handed Cole to Mark and started up the car. She began to drive down the road, looking around for a school bus. After half an hour, she came across a school. The sign had been stripped off it's words and most the buses were gone except for one. She drove into the parking lot and got out. She pulled out her shovel and began to slowly walk towards the bus. Once she made it, she put her hands between the doors and pried them open. It was surprisingly easy and afterwards she sat down in one of the seats, unsure of what to do next. "Mark, you ever hot wired a school bus?"

".. No, but--.." He walked with her after waking Johnathan up and handing Cole to him. ".. It's the same as a normal car. I can give it a shot." He scratched the back of his head and stepped up into the bus, sighing a little as he looked for the panel by the driver's seat. It was smaller, but he could manage it. ".. Want me to give it a shot?" He asked. (@AvidElmV2)

"As long as you don't electrocute yourself." Maria got up and leaned against the chair, watching Mark carefully. She might as well watch Mark work and learn to do it herself. She took note of everything Mark did, slightly jumping at every movement. What if he actually did get electrocuted? She laughed at the thought and continued to watch Mark.

Mark flipped the panel off and then stripped the starter wire and the power wire and then quickly put them together. They sparked, and hey presto, the engine jolted to a start and chuckled to himself. He looked off at Maria and smiled. "You driving, or are you switching the wheel with Johnathan now?" He asked. Connor sat hy the fire, warming up his old bones. "Back in my day, and yours no doubt," he said to Bill, "there were such a thing called heaters. I could have sat infront of thise all day and bake. The Missus would throw a fit saying I'd get burned if I moved any closer to it, but I never did. My son, on the other hand, also liked to sit in front of it. He was not as lucky as me and got a nasty first degree burn, basically a sunburn." he explained in case no one understood what he meant. The Doc probably did, however. They called him Doc for a reason.

Maria laughed and started to talk before Johnathan groggily walked onto the bus. He sat down in one of the seats and fell asleep. Maria shook her head and turned to Mark. "I guess I'm gonna be driving." She jumped into the drivers seat and left the parking lot. "So, were going to Wisconsin right?" Maria pulled a map out of her pocket and drove onto the freeway.

(His name's Brad. Not Bill xP)

".. Yeah, I know what you mean... My kids--" He stopped and looked around everyone. He didn't like talking about them at all, but maybe it was time to just let go and be more open about it? Who knew. Perhaps it was for the best, and seeing as there were all these new people here, it'd be better to gain their trust on the first impression. ".. My kids used to sit with me on Saturday nights when I was off work... They--.. We had an open fire in our house." He chuckled softly. ".. When they were younger, I'd step out to use the bathroom or make some drinks, and I'd come back, and they'd be trying to roast marshmallows that weren't even the type that could be roasted." He laughed a little. (@Beowulf)

"Uh... I don't know." He scratched the back of his head. "That was the original plan, yeah, unless you had something else planned, I mean." He said, and then took a seat that was nearest to the driver's seat so he could stay there and talk to Maria for a while. He was probably going to end up with Cole falling asleep, but who knew. Hopefully they could both get some shuteye. "Yeah, I guess we'll go with that." He said.

(I'm going to be holding an event that'll give us a window for a time-skip soon, so don't go too far ahead @AvidElmV2))

Maria nodded and chuckled a bit. She hoped that Mark couldn't see how much she was sweating, and how much the bus was swerving. This was, in fact, the third time she had driven a car, including the time she got her learners permit and the time she ran into a street pole. She tightened her grip around the steering wheel and sighed. "So, how old are you Mark?"

(@DrTrollinski )

"I swear we've been over this, Maria." He chuckled a little and then rocked Cole a little more. "I'm thirteen." He smiled. ".. I'll be fourteen in November, though. People born in November are more likely to be serial killers, apparently, but don't worry, you've got nothing to worry about with me." He laughed a little and then lied back, looking down at Cole's cute little face. D'aww. This baby made his heart melt. (@AvidElmV2)

"Oh.... Ya.." She laughed with him and surveyed the road. They passed a couple of zombies and her's eyes followed them. Some of them actually grabbed onto the door and got dragged. She stopped at a gas station on the side of the road and looked back to Mark. "Me and Johnathan are gonna go look for some food." Maria got out of her seat and woke up Johnathan who, reluctantly, followed her inside. They came back a couple of minutes later with two bags of stale Doritos's, a big bag of Lays, and two water bottles. Johnathan put the food in the bag while Maria drove down the road.

"It's sad because we're not even close to Wisconsin." Mark sighed. And then, at no other time than a perfect moment, Cole started crying, but Mark couldn't help but laugh. "Oh, I know, big man... It's sad, isn't it?" He chuckled and then lifted him up a little, rocking him even more. Cole was bawling. "Oh, I know, I know... We'll be at Wisconsin soon, buddy... I promise." He laughed. For the first time in a while, Mark didn't seem so defensive of Cole, nor so depressed. (@AvidElmV2)

Maria laughed a bit. Johnathan just smiled and laid his head on his backpack. "So, how long do you think it'll be till we get to Wisconsin?"Johnathan asked, yawning. He sat up and nearly fell out of his seat when Maria took a turn. He dragged a hand through his hair and looked at Cole. He smiled and pinched his cheeks. "Aren't you just the cutest baby in the world!" Maria rolled her eyes and laughed.

".. In this thing? We're looking at days." He sighed. "Better than walking, right?" He said softly, chuckling a little. Cole simply stopped crying when Johnathan came to him. It was a nice friendly face that he recognized, but Mark had managed to do most of the calming down before John got there. Cole simply giggled a little as his cheeks were pinched. "Too right he's the cutest baby in the world. God, he must come above me on the cute list." Mark joked with a chuckle. (@AvidElmV2)

Johnathan looked down to Mark and grinned. "Well I wouldn't say you were that cute. If anything, Cole would come above ME on the cuteness list! I mean look at me! I am God's gift to the world!" Johnathan rose his hands into the air and sung out. He clamped his hands under his chin like an angel. Maria couldn't help but hold back a laugh. "sure you are Johnathan...... Whatever helps you sleep at night."

(@DrTrollinski )

"Try putting on a nice little tiara and a dress. Then you'd look cute." Mark grinned at him. Maria noticed something while they were driving - on the road straight ahead, it was blocked off at the next intersection on the street they were going down. It was blocked by old buses and cars, all of which had had every window broken, and every part salvaged from them. (@AvidElmV2)

Johnathan stuck his tongue out at Mark and rubbed his head a little. When Maria stopped the bus, Johnathan looked up and sighed. "I don't liked this... Take the other road." Maria stared intently at the road. "Johnathan get out your rifle." Maria stared at the road and wondered how many car's were there. "Mark, wanna see why Johnathan wanted a bus?" Johnathan's eyes widened as he pulled out his rifle. "Maria.... Don-" Maria smashed her foot onto the gas pedal, tightened up, and hoped for the best.

(@DrTrollinski )

"Don't! You won't get through another bus!" Mark yelled, but then quickly braced himself as the bus sped into action. None of the cars or the bus there had wheels, so they were done for. He sat down on the ground with his back against the back of the chair in front of him and curled up tightly with Cole, whom of which was crying again. He had a horrible feeling that this wasn't going to end well. (@AvidElmV2)

Maria screamed out as she heard the sounds of bending metal. Eventually, all sounds stopped and she thought they were in the clear. Until they hit another bus. Maria flew forwards and hit her head on the steering wheel. Johnathan flew out into the aisles and rolled before he hit the front of the bus and groaned. Maria lied on the buses wheel before sitting up. "Wow...." She smiled and laughed before she fell out of the drivers seat, unconscious. Johnathan stood up and wobbled around before using a buses seat to prop himself up. "And that, children, is why we don't try to ram car's with buses...."

(@DrTrollinski )

"Did they like them burned or browned?" he asked with a small smile. It was meant as a small joke, but there was no harm if Brad answered or not. "My lad, wherever he may be now, was quite the devil himself. Took after me, so the wife said. Well, he always wanted a tree house, and I didn't want to build him one. So I told him to go find a tree and talk about it with me again. Well, he found one, and I did all I could to say no without really saying it. To prove me wrong in saying it wouldn't be safe, the daft boy climbed it and nearly broke his neck. A branch broke underneath him and he managed to catch the one beneath him. Luckiest kid I've ever seen."

((@DrTrollinski))

".. Burned, mostly. They were only ten when all of this happened... My boy, he was kind of like yours, I suppose." He chuckled a little. "He was very adventurous. Cracked a bone in his arm when he was six because he fell out of a tree, but he just shook it off - he wasn't taken to the hospital until he broke it fully at school the next day." He chuckled a little and then bowed his head to look at the floor and began twiddling his thumbs. ".. I've done Delaney already... They used to speak to each other before bed when they were little, because they shared a room, and they'd always talk of 'getting a good job and buying daddy a big house'." He chuckled and shook his head. "They were good kids." He added quietly. 'Were'. That meant only one thing. (@Beowulf)

'Were', that meant dangerous territory. He had seen a couple snap over having to talk about the 'were'. So, he tried to change the subject. "I'm an old man, and I forget. Did you do anything before the s**t hit the fan? Me, I wasn't much smart. But, I worked like a mule once I was set on doing something. So I was mostly the "Carry that there" guy. Good pay."

(Did you ever get my post?)

(I don't think so. Sorry.)

Cole was screaming, and Mark honestly wasn't impressed. Why would she do that? She could have gotten them hurt, or worse, she could have easily killed Cole. Why would she do that when there was a one-month-old baby with them? Was she stupid?

Evidently, she was.

With a sad sigh he stood up with the screaming infant in his arms and then went and walked out of the bus, and then checked the tires of the bus itself. He grunted and kicked one of them - that was entirely flat, and now smoke was bellowing out of the engine block. They weren't going anywhere with this thing anymore.

Why.

Did.

She.

Do.

That.

He closed his eyes and didn't say a word, and then walked back into the bus, sitting down on one of the back seats without doing so much as even whispering. He felt so disappointed and betrayed. (@AvidElmV2

"I worked at a gunstore and shooting range... I didn't do much, but it did support the family." He sighed a little and rubbed his forearm. ".. It got us by, I never had any degrees or anything like that, no diplomas. Just the skin on my teeth and the clothes on my back - I managed to keep us all clothed, cleaned, homed, and fed, though." He shrugged a little. (@Beowulf)
