Tempting Fate With Godly Hands

It was just barely into the twentieth century and the humans were already making so many advances. Sulian had a hard time trying to keep up with it all. He found it quite remarkable but then again, humans were odd creatures. In his mind, there were a lot of things that made them odd. Their customs, their way of viewing the world and the things in it, and their personalities. They were intriguing. The gods he knew didn't compare to the humans. They were quite boring, in fact. They did the same thing all the time whereas humans did something completely different everyday. And then, there were the days where they did something that got them killed or they were murdered, died of illness, or anything of the sorts. That was the only thing that kept him busy in this world, it seemed.

Tonight, there was a party and he knew something would happen during it. That was the only reason why he was going. There was no other point as to why he would go. He was currently up in his room and putting on a simple suit since this was a party for upperclassmen. This party was going to be interesting and he knew it. Fixing up his tie, he grabbed his ring and slid it onto his finger before straightening out his jacket. Turning on his heels, he exited his bedroom and walked down the all before descending the stairs.

"Ankou," He called out and walked towards the front door, plucking his jacket off of the coat rack as an older looking gentlemen came around the corner. "Watch the house and wait until I get back to do your job." He said in a firm tone and looked towards the gentlemen with a look of seriousness on his face. When he got a nod in response, he opened up the front door and stepped outside before closing the door behind him and slipping on his jacket.

"I wonder why Aunt Rosamund ever bothers with these silly little soirees," Alice said lazily to her trusted chamber maid, Susan as she was being busied about, her dress being straightened out, her hair being skillfully curled and set and her accessories being placed meticulously on her. "And did you here where we're going, Sue?" She scoffs as she opens up a little glass and gold-gilded box filled with playing cards of intricate design. "A place called the Silver Goose! It's supposed to be posh but I think it sounds rather repulsive." She busied herself with shuffling them as her maid finished up her get up for the night. "Well, pray that it doesn't last too long," she told Susan when all was done. She slipped her case of playing cards into her purse alongside a fresh box of cigarettes.

She got up and stood before her four-panelled mirror, closely examining he outfit her aunt had decided to put her in tonight. It was intricately beaded and shimmering but it was simply white with silver trim. Drop-waist, like the rave of this decade was and well-fitted on her, fall just on her knees. She put a hand on her hip and studied the crystal and silver headpiece she had on and shrugged. "Well, at least this isn't in a hideous color..." she said as she opened the door and less-than-mirthfully greeted Rosamund. "Well, Auntie, shall we get this night over with?" She smiled and sighed as her aunt whisked her away to the car that waited outside the expansive house.

All Alice could think of on the way were the men and women who'd unwittingly disrupt her game of solitaire to offer extremely late condolences for her parents or to flirt, all of course in the interest of Schroeder et al. Trading. She would've preferred to stay home or maybe even be allowed to go to London to study so she could run their business on her own but it was in no one's plans at all.

The Silver Goose was a mansion, converted into a place of gathering for all the highest socialites. It had a well-landscaped garden in front with a flowing fountain, shaped like angels pouring out champagne into the waiting tub below it. The lights were enticing and the music enchanting--all the qualifications to make a place bore Alice to death.

She followed her aunt inside, said her most cordial greetings to the first few men she was introduced to, declined a few drinks before finding her usual haunting ground of a solitary table in the corner, where there would usually be just one chair. With all the music and dancing all around, Alice chose to escape to her little game of solitaire, lighting up a cigarette and fanning over a serving boy to bring her a glass of brandy, like she'd usually have.

Sulian continued on his way down the street and his eyes drifted around. It was getting late and so there weren't many people out and about currently. He pulled his coat around and slipped his arms through the sleeves, straightening out the jacket after he put it on. Stuffing his hands into his pockets, he turned the corner and started to walk towards the more... Exclusive part of town. The richer folk lived here and they were the life of this city. But, in his opinion, he preferred the poorer parts. Mostly because those people end up passing on quicker than the richer part and it gives him something to do rather than attend nearly every party a rich person has and waiting for something to happen.

A sigh escaped his lips as he turned down yet another street and spotted the mansion that was holding this gathering. He pulled out one of his hands out of his pocket and looked at his watch. Right on time. Pulling out the other hand, he started to walk up towards the large building. Another reason why he goes to nearly any party this little area holds is because he wants to find someone. He stays off to the side and observes the party rather than actually get involved in it. He never liked these parties but he wanted to be involved, hoping to spot the one person he's looking for. His eyes drift around and he hummed lightly. The women looked lovely and the men looked presentable.

Walking up the steps to the mansion, his eyes drifted around once again and he nearly grimaced at the smell he was hit with as he entered the building. Cigarettes and alcohol. What a common smell anymore in the presence of the humans. He could see those that indulged themselves in these deadly things just to enjoy themselves whereas others do it as a form of slow suicide or just a way of enhancing pleasure. He found humans both weird and pathetic at times. They had such weird ways of making themselves happy and content with life. The gods... They did a lot more with their lives and they didn't drink nearly as much alcohol.

"Such odd creatures." Sulian grumbled under his breath and stepped into the building. He looked around and spotted Alice after a few moments. She was the odd ball because she didn't want to be here. Well, this event might turn out interesting for the ancient man.

"Alice! Alice" Rosamund called jovially from among the crowd. She was dancing with a group of women and men of her age, smoking and drinking, laughing as they gossiped while they danced. "Come and dance! I know you love this song!" She said as saxophone and other instruments were played by a uniformed band.

"You love that song, Aunt Rosamund," she murmured to herself as she lifted her head and smiled politely as she declined. "No, no thank you! I'm quite fine where I am." She laid her cards out and started another games, taking dainty sips from her brandy. A little went a long way and a little was all she needed to make the night go just a little bit faster.

A few ladies and men her age approached her and smiled. "Would you mind if we played along with you?" She looked up at them studiously and offered them her usual genial smile. "Oh, I only know solitaire. And of course, it's a game I can only play alone. Besides, why should we bother the waiters to ask for more seats from you." They all frowned, as if they were just testing whether or not the Schroeder girl really was a princess made of ice. They left and Alice smiled happily to herself as she could continue her game.

No one else approached her for a while and again, it was just her, her smoke and alcohol, the music drowning in and out of her mind and her cards--just the way she liked it.

Sulian let his eyes drift around and he spotted Alice once again. His curiosity of the woman was slowly growing and he found himself walking towards her. "May I ask what you are doing?" Great conversation starter. His eyes drifted to the cards and he looked at them curiously. He had never seen such a game before and he was curious about it too. After a few seconds of staring at the cards, his eyes turned back towards the woman and he waited for her answer.
