Draugrs are a rather intelligent form if undead, they're cursed to live without the gods or knowledge of why this happened and overall without warmth, just constant cold. She cannot actually keep up her own body heat, her magic does that for her. Since shr was supposed it be a priestess shes even more independent and thoughtful when in cursed state. Elith can sense undead to an extent, but necromancers magics and dark magics are a big weak point for her, thus why the phylactry was such a problem.
