Kota smiled as he watched with arms folded, perhaps he too would be able to learn from Rei's teaching style, and he had hopes of picking up some things to combine into his own. Himiko's proposition proved pretty interesting however he felt that training the soldiers alongside Okami was his calling for the time being. The floor had been relinquished to Rei to do as she saw fit with her pupils however the wolf would provide them with some advice beforehand, her words true. The foundation, mastering the basics, provides the brightest future for one progressing down this path. Hopefully, these aspiring warriors would hold that close to their souls.

"I'm curious Okami, you never struck me as the Sensei type, is this a new interest or something that's always been there?" Kota inquired, his tails would around as his curiosity was on full display. " As for me, I plan on teaching once it comes time, I believe it's only right to pass on the knowledge amassed to the next generation, hoping that they will carry the flame forward. I'd like to someday erect a dojo. A place where people of different backgrounds may commune, learn, and improve. It would be my form of attempting to establish everlasting change within Kuridan." Kota took a look around, seeing the village hard at work, he could feel himself slowly becoming more invested in Taeko. It reminded him of his village, its people were struggling and had very little but they were hellbent on survival, everyone's soul burning with passion to see the sunrise the next day. He saw an extension of himself within its residents, feeling as though it was his duty to ensure Taeko's survival.

Rei Unagishi

"Damn Okami, you sly fox." Rei muttered to herself as Okami set up the situation so she would really need to join teaching the villagers too. Though she couldn't deny hearing encouragement from Okami and Vincent made her happy. Maybe, despite all the unpleasant memories she had with it, she would be able to put the knowledge she got from her father to good use.

"Fine, I will do it." Letting out a sigh, Rei tried to compose herself. She did teached the ashigaru some technique before, but they're a desperate & motivated little group dedicated to save their loved one, they had very strong drive so it wasn't that hard to teach them. The ones who gathered now were mostly new people though so she doubt it would be as smooth as before. Still... she would put high hopes to these students, her students.

"I hate lectures though, I always start to doze off whenever my sensei start to talk more than 5 minutes. So let's start with a demonstration, a little peek of what you would be able to do once you mastered my techniques." Creating some distances from the gathered people, Rei stood in the middle of a wide patch of tall grass with several tree stumps in it. Unfolding her brand new folding sword that she bought from Vincent, Rei played with the sword on her hand by twirling it as her eyes darted left and right taking noted of the position of the stumps. Then with one swift motion she perform a quick 360 degree swing. As she folded her sword back to its original state, the tall grass around her would suddenly get cut off, however, there's no slash mark on the stumps which shows that she completely avoid it and only cut the grass.

"There will be many threats to the village and they come in great numbers, what I'm about to teach you will help you deal with the odds. However, you will also fight side by side with the people around you so mindfulness at using this technique will be very important." Rei talked with a more serious tone than what she usually have. Out of all the techniques she had, she felts [Area] and [Selective] would be the most beneficial for the villagers, hopefully the ashigaru can teach the others [deflect] so she wouldn't need to. Also she couldn't really teach her other technique with the current season as they would need the winter's cold to actually learn it.

Just like what she said, Rei's lesson consist of very little lecture. She focused on drilling the proper form and flow repeatedly, occasionally telling them about the importance of a particular aspects like spacing or positioning before telling them to continue the drill. She also dedicated a considerable chunk of the time for breaks and spent time just chatting and drinking, telling some of her experiences as a swordsman in Rotia before whipping them back to drilling the forms.

1) The Training Grounds – Okami, Rei, Kota, and the Villagers

Autumn sunlight pours over the makeshift training field at Taeko’s edge. A semicircle of eager, if somewhat nervous, villagers has formed. While their postures are stiff and uncertain, their eyes gleam with determination.

Rei’s Demonstration

Rei’s circular slash—slicing a ring in the tall grass and leaving the nearby stumps untouched—earns collective gasps.

Young Male Villager (Tanuki): “H-How’d she manage that…? She didn’t even graze the stumps!”
Older Female Villager (Tanuki): “It’s like watchin’ a wind gust made of steel.”

Some onlookers immediately attempt to mimic Rei’s stance. Most do so clumsily. A few clank wooden practice swords against each other in confusion, trying to replicate the swirling motion they just witnessed.

Okami and Kota’s Role

Okami and Kota split off with smaller groups to drill fundamentals:

Okami might notice a short, wide-built badger beastkin struggling with footwork.

Badger Beastkin (Villager): “I’m used to swingin’ a hoe and shovel, not a sword… Feels like I’m always off-balance. Can you show me again how my stance should be?”

Kota may see a lanky fox boy with a trembling tail raising questions on defensive posture.

Fox Boy (Villager): “If I don’t have a sword or spear, is there a way to hold my arms or shift my weight to keep from gettin’ knocked over?”
Both eagerly await feedback, gazing at Okami or Kota as though their words hold the key to salvation.

Neco-Arc’s “Training”

Neco-Arc
La Creatura.png

In the midst of this, Neco-Arc reappears with its makeshift “samurai armor”:

Neco-Arc (striking a wild pose): “NYAAHAHA! Pay attention, new recruits—I shall show you the secret to unstoppable strength!”

It brandishes its bamboo stick:

Neco-Arc: “First, puff out your chest and yell ‘WAAAH!’ at the top of your lungs. That’ll scare your enemies!”

A few villagers laugh. One brave soul, a teenaged tanuki girl, actually tries it:

Tanuki Girl (flustered): “W-WAAAH!”

She giggles immediately afterward, losing all semblance of intimidation. Neco-Arc leaps onto a nearby log, looks down on her with faux disapproval, then shrugs theatrically:

Neco-Arc: “Close enough, soldier! Carry on!”

It’s a silly diversion, yet it releases some tension among the novices, giving Okami, Rei, and Kota a brief break to step in, correct stances, or offer real advice.

2) The Watch Tower – Vincent’s Awkward Discovery

Rising near the outskirts of Taeko, the unfinished wooden tower provides a modest overview of farmland and the approach roads. Rope, nails, saws, and planks lie scattered around, evidence of ongoing construction.

Vincent Arrives with the Bell

Vincent, soot-stained from the forge, arrives with a freshly crafted bell. Some villagers, returning from the fields, pause to watch him climb the short ladder to the half-built platform above.

The Private Conversation

As Vincent peeks over the platform’s edge, he spots two younger beastkin in a close embrace:

  • A cat-woman with tufted ears and a swishing tail.
  • A broad-shouldered canine with folded ears and a timid smile.
They’re engrossed in hushed conversation—until they suddenly notice Vincent.

Cat-Woman (startled gasp): “Oh! We… Uh—we didn’t think anyone’d come up here this early.”

She immediately steps back, her tail fluffing out in embarrassment. The canine, ears pinned against his head, rubs the back of his neck awkwardly.

Canine Beastkin (speaking quickly): “S-Sorry, friend! We—um—just needed a quiet moment to talk about… family matters.”

He trails off, throwing a side glance at the cat-woman. The momentary tension suggests something more personal, but he quickly clears his throat.

Offering Help

The cat-woman recovers first, noticing the bell in Vincent’s hands:

Cat-Woman (paws twitching nervously): “You’re… installing that, right? I can hold the ladder for you. I-I mean, if you don’t mind.”

She points to a sturdy wooden ladder leaning against the half-finished railing. Her eyes avoid Vincent’s but her posture shows genuine willingness to help.

The canine tries to excuse himself:

Canine Beastkin (bowing his head): “I should probably get back to my rounds… Elder Yoshiro will have my hide if I’m missing at midday…”

He glances at the cat-woman. She nods, giving him a soft smile, and then he quickly descends the tower, leaving Vincent and the cat-woman alone if Vincent accepts her offer.

3) The Shrine Journey – Yukan, Mathias, and Himiko

After leaving Taeko, Yukan and Mathias follow Himiko along a winding trail. The path is silent but for the occasional rustle of wind or chirp of forest birds.

Friendly Prodding from Himiko

As they walk, Himiko sneaks curious looks at Mathias’ rifle.

Himiko
Himiko1.png

Himiko (tentative smile): “I know not all travelers like to share their secrets, but… your weapon is quite different from the matchlocks I’ve heard of. Is it true it can fire faster than a crossbow?”

She keeps her tone polite, often including Yukan in the conversation:

Himiko (turning to Yukan): “And you, Yukan—I’ve heard rumors of foreigners wielding strange guns. Have you encountered many? I’m curious if we’ll see more in the Republic soon.”

Her tail swishes faintly with interest. She’s earnest but clearly doesn’t want to pry too hard, leaving space for either man to respond—or politely deflect.

Approaching the Shrine

They pass through a vine-covered torii gate leading to a mossy courtyard. Paper talismans, faintly glowing, hang from the rafters of an old wooden structure.

Himiko (lowering her voice): “We’re almost there… Don’t be alarmed by the caretaker’s manner. He’s… unique.”

A swirl of incense smoke drifts out, and the shrine door slides open to reveal a panda beastkin priest. His black-white fur is striking against the dark-patterned priest robes. Ribbons, talismans, and charms dangle from his intricately carved staff. The staff’s top bears strange shapes that sway in an invisible breeze.

Panda Priest
Panda Priest.jpg

Panda Priest (voice echoing unnaturally): “Visitors… at last. You come seeking knowledge, yes?”

His lips curl into a half-smile that’s simultaneously playful and threatening. The red accents on his robes pulse with a faint glow.

Panda Priest (tapping his staff): “Well, I welcome you… but show me your resolve. I do not waste my talents on the timid or the unworthy.”

Building Tension

A gust rustles the bamboo. Himiko’s ears flatten slightly, but she remains steady.

  • The panda priest eyes Yukan’s bearing—perhaps noting his aura of leadership.
  • His gaze lingers curiously on Mathias’ rifle, as though sensing something unusual or powerful.
He added,

Panda Priest:
“Hmm… you carry a thunder-rod from beyond? Intriguing. Are you prepared to face what lurks in unseen realms?”

Life definitely had it's odd twists and turns going on. Hearing that her brother was now apparently starting to make bigger and bigger moves was surely one of those. Learning where he might be at wasn't the most difficult. Getting there was. Trying to ask folk to bring you somewhere when you had to lie about your destination and intentions? It was a challenge and a half for sure.

Luckily enough, she'd eventually find her way to Teako. Although she needed to walk the last bit on foot, as the driver she'd hitched a ride with asked her if Teako was her finally destination and kicked her off when she said it wasn't. Fun times.

Upon entering, however, her ears caught the sound of... battle? No. Upon closer inspection, it was just training. She was about to just ignore it when she saw some of the folk training. “Wow...” She silently uttered. Now that was a sight she didn't want to just pass. Her brother could wait. Probably.

An adorable girl with horns and a tail, a handsome multi-tailed fox man and a gorgeous human lady. Those were not the type of old-bastard looking drill instructors she'd expect in the boonies.

Kota and Okami seemed closets and easiest to approach... and so she did. “Excuse you.” Great start. “What's such shabby dog doing with the ugliest Human I've ever seen?” She asked them, only to realising flirting was really tough when your intentions were forced to be a 'lie' as well. She should probably try to rectify that as soon as she could, lest she get enemies.

“I'm Steve Irwin, I was blessed by a demon to always speak truthfully. So please do not forgive my mannerism in the slightest. I'm sure you're both moronic enough to never learn the truth of my condition.” She would state to them with a smile and a polite bow. Clearly that should be enough, right?

“I'm not the least bit curious about the existence of that utterly mundane creature either.” She'd add, pointing at Neco-Arc. “Either way, I have never heard of a stranger called Yukan, nor would I come here to look for him.” She might as well tell them her goals.

Yukan followed the path with a serious and focused expression on his face for the most of the time, looking around every now and again. When Himiko asked him about the fire arm, Yukan looked to her thoughtfully before he nodded.

"Yes, It's true, I have witnessed some first hand when I fought against the East Empire during the war..there were gnomes seeing as mercenaries from Widersia who had most curious guns, which appeared to combine technology and magic in a way..they fired colorful bolts which were quite effective at a range..much different than Tanegashima..the technology combined what I associate with Widersia..with..what I've heard about the Duchy of Roran is like..so it made me wonder about the full extents of their backgrounds.."

"I think what we will see with time is our Tanegashima becoming more effective and sophisticated, not that they aren't already..but these weapons while having similar goals are quite different in application.." Yukan added.

When they approached the gate, Yukan gave a bow with his hands clasped together, before stopping his bow and moving to the side of the path before entering as if he was to assume this was correct then it marked the boundary between the outside world and the land of the shrine itself, which he wanted to respect.

He gave her a nod when she spoke with her lowered voice, Yukan was aware there were eccentric people and sometimes one needed to do business with them. It was a fact of life.

However when Yukan saw the Panda Priest he was actually genuinely a bit surprised. They looked much more decorated than he was expecting, like perhaps they were actually quite coherent in Magic, at least looking the part between the staff, talisman, charms.

His voice was as impactful as his appearance it seemed.

Yukan gave a bow with Etiquette F

"Yes we have come here seeking knowledge, we wish to know if you believe anyone from the Village Taeko, especially if any of the children, are attuned for and would be capable of learning the art of casting.."

He then followed up what the Panda Priest had said after, a steely glint of determination in his eyes, taking the straight forward approach, "Please, tell us what we must do to prove that we are worthy."

The Walk.

Mathias largely kept quiet, the ingrained sense to observe taking hold. Of Course that didn't stop him from engaging with the two during the walk up. "Don't really know as to where your referring to, Yukan, isn't really any magic in this." he patted the stock of his rifle as it was slung over his shoulder. "I cast my own shot out of anything I can melt or shape, and I make my own powder for the most part. Equal parts Sulfur, Saltpeter and Charcoal. Making primer caps is going to be...interesting, but between the technology of this realm and the fact magic exists...apparently, shouldn't be hard to rig up something similar to Fulminate of Mercury."

As he walked, he felt his mood lighten a bit and figuring a story would help pass the time. "My Opa, er, grandfather, used something much like this for many years as his hunting gun back home in Tennessee. His was an older design, used a piece of flint to ignite the powder in the pan, but he preferred it over the bolt action rifle he used during his time in the Army. I my self used something far, far more high speed and modern during my stint in the marines. This old girl right here is legitimately and literally a relic of a long passed time were I'm from. Starting to think I should have taken the SR-25 for hunting that night..."

His voice trailed off as they neared the Shrines gate. The place was, in a word, beautiful. Well kept ground, pruned trees, some he recognized and some he didn't, complimented the positively Japanese architecture of the place in a manner that reminded him of the ancient shrines he'd visited during his time in Japan. Though, it wasn't just Japanese either. Certain details were different, the trim was strange, the arrangement of certain aspects of the geometry of the buildings and gate it self, while greatly resembling the tori gates of Old Honshu and Kyushu, had their own signature mark on them that told him this place wasn't just culturally warring states period Japan.

It was a good feeling, to see and realize, in what ever small way he had, that this place, these people and this world had it's own identity about it. He didn't know the local customs, and wished not to offend, and so bowed with the Tanuki man as he entered the shrine. Rather then clasp his hands, he reached in to the collar his shirt and retrieved the helm of Awe medallion that hung on a length of waxed chord and kissed it gently. Wrapping the chord and the medallion around his right hand, he spoke a muttered prayer.

He didn't recall the words exactly, but his Opa had made damn sure he knew of the old rights of his cold homeland during his youth. The reasoning behind fallowing the old Gods echoed in his mind. "I know your mother and father kept not the gods of my home, and I blame them not for this, but I do, and I ask that you do as well, my barnebarn. Know that I hold no ill will against the men who fallow the son on the cross, but his father is not mine, and shall not be yours if you should choose to."

His Grandfathers word echoed in his mind as they walked past the gate. The Oath he had taken on the day his grandfather passed also echoed in his mind. I will take no other gods, I will take none other to worship, and I command my soul and deeds to the Houses Asir and Vanir. The Panda priest's words ripped him square out of his mental flashbacks though, and his smile instantly triggered his gut.

The beastmen wanted a test of resolve, something to prove. He didn't know Himiko will enough to gauge her thoughts, but the flattening of her ears told him enough, and Yukan's own posturing was a mix of supplication and guarded. Mathias's own posture left nothing to be hidden. With a purposeful movement, he set his hand, gently, on the grip of his side arm and leveled a sharp gaze on the priest. Not a threat, not one out right, but a simple show that this outlander was prepared.

"The Samurai speaks the truth, prest, we seek aid for the village, level upon us your test so that we may prove our selves worthy." This was a different Mathias then the one that had spoken before. His voice was level and quiet, but his tone spoke with a steel edge dripped in venom. The chill, lowish key of his manner was gone. His jaw was set, his eyes locked, his body tensed. This was a Mathias ready for a fight.

What remained to be seen was if the priest was ready to issue it.

Okami chuckled to herself for a moment as she turned towards Kota.

"That's because I'm not. But then I watched this one take a few of the locals who'd never fought a battle in their life and turn them into a... half decent fighting force in a few hours."

She gestured towards Rei, as she continued to run drills with the locals. She watched the residents of Taeko clumsily mimicking Rei's movements for a few moments before she continued. Many of whom were accidentally attacking one another and almost falling over as they continued their practice.

"Half-decent might be a bit generous, but the Ashigaru who accompanied us into the caves showed a lot of promise in a very short amount of time. Point is, we're not going to be able to change The Republic without an army. And an army without people to train them is worthless. That seems like a skill that I should be able to pick up rather quickly."

Two of the villagers- a badger and a fox- called out to them, both of whom were having issues with their stances. Okami met eyes with the badger for a moment before turning back to Kota.

"We'll have plenty of practice here in Taeko, if nothing else."

But, before the Ronin could rise and try to give the badger any guidance, a new face made her way over and introduced herself. A tanuki beastkin who introduced herself with an extraordinarily... masculine name. At first, Okami felt as though she should've taken offense to the woman's(?) words, but they were really more confusing than anything. Dripping with a sarcasm so thick that they lost any sense of wit and came off as downright obnoxious and somewhat pointless. And to those... confusing words, Okami gave...

...no response whatsoever.

She glanced over at this strange local with a furrowed brow, met eyes with Kota for a moment, stood, walked right past this "Steve" fellow without a single word, and over to the badger.

"Here. Let's try this. At least until we can get you a proper weapon to train with."

Okami took the hoe from out of the badger's hands, then flipped it so that it's metal end, and consequently its center of mass, rested in the palm of his hands. Then, she'd move to his side, sliding one hand down to grip the lowest part of the hoe that he could and the other upwards a few inches so as to leave a small gap between both hands.

"Hold it like that. It should better simulate a sword that way. Now-" The Ronin went and picked up a hoe of her own; wielding it the exact same way that she'd instructed him to, "You and I are going to do a little exercise to help with your footwork."

Then, Okami turned to the others who'd been giving her their attention.

"And I want you all to do the same. There are ways to extend your reach with a blade, but that comes with time. For now, we'll work on spacing and footwork all at once. Do as we do."

The Ronin brought her right leg forward, let her left hang back, and turned her torso so as to present her side to the badger; a much smaller target than her front. She brought the hoe up and met his; just a few inches of its tip extending past his. She lowered her stance ever-so slightly; each leg becoming a spring ready to allow for a burst of movement at a moment's notice.

She took one quick step forward, the tip of her weapon looming over the badger's head. One step back, resuming a neutral distance. Another step back, creating a gap between their weapons. Then forward once more, back to neutral.

"We'll start with simple movements. Forward and back. Your job is to move with me and keep my weapon at neutral distance," she would lightly tap the end of his weapon with her own, "Right here. Not too far, not too close. I'll tell you where I'm going and I'll keep a steady rhythm."

A smile crept across Okami's face.

"And, if you can get the hang of that, we'll get into something more interesting. As for you, Miss... 'Steve'?"

From her tone of voice, it was clear that The Wolf, in no way, believed that to be this tanuki woman's actual name. But it was the name given, so it was the name to be used.

"I have some good news. Lord Yukan isn't looking for a woman by the name of "Steve". Neither is this ugly woman and her shabby companion. We who train do so of our own free will. If what we do here is not to your liking, then you are free to find use elsewhere. You have my word that no one here will stop you. So I suggest that you exercise that freedom."

Then, she turned back to the badger in front of her.

"READY!" A brief pause to give the others a moment to take a proper stance and adjust their distances for the exercise, "FRONT!"

In a surprising burst of speed, Okami took a single step forward; a light sheer echoing through the air as the wooden shaft of her weapon slid forward across the badger's. And we would see just how quickly he could adapt his movements to this rudimentary exercise. Well...

...that and if Okami was any good at actually giving out helpful instructions to train the people of Taeko.

The Village

She mediates

A whistle. Vince walked about without a care in the world, his mind less focused and more "submitted" to the task. Doing all of this reminded him of aiding and building in his own local survivor camp back home -- only this world while weirder seemed almost more hopeful. He was tempted to think back on what folk were dealing with on his world in the wake of his own demise....but he hardly had much interest in getting his head too far up his own ass.

Instead, his mind was on the task at hand. He ascended the ladder.
Yet as he reaches the top of the watch tower -- another odd sight takes him out of the task-at-hand. As he reaches the top of the ladder, his eyes widen. Yet he doesn't really avert his eyes nor does he really care to. He was here to get something.

"What we got goin' on here huh?" He said, very loudly.

"Can't you all find somewhere bit less useful to get it on. Yeesh!" Still, after listening to their story, he lets the dog off easy -- not really seeing much reason to hold him there. Still, this tower would be a good place to actually start stationing people. Obviously, it looked like they had gotten to it a bit but had given up part way through. Something told him that food was a bit more of an immediate concern then being attacked every few years.

Finally however, after having listened to their explanation, Vince gave them the mercy of a slightly quieter voice. "Uh huh. Right. Got it." Vince said with a tone of obvious sarcasm.

You know how does that even work. If she's a dog person and he's a cat person. And they have a kid...

He shook his head. Probably shouldn't think about that too hard.

"If you got stuff you need doin' probably should be doin' it. Work now and play later." He said, doing nothing to stop the dog from doing anything useful. Though he could sense the chastisment from Vince. It was the same kind of voice one might expect when a boss finds someone slacking off on the job. Ironic considering he himself woke up late. Yet determined to work he by the way he was looking at.

An offer given was met with a stare directly towards her person, as he simply said "Sure. If you're not busy at all, if you know what I mean." He said jokingly, motioning off to the ladder as he began to climb it with his toolbox held in hand and he'd start affixing it. However, after his roasting, he did lend an ear in case she wanted to rebuttal his teasing.

Perhaps at some other point, someone would be able to do the same to him, continuing a vicious cycle of banter.

"Nice assist, general Neco-chan. The enemies stand no chance against our combined power!" Rei gleefully play along with Neco-Arc's antics. Seeing the villagers' more relaxed stance, Rei used the opportunity to correct some of the villagers' stance before telling them to continue the drill.

"Don't rush thing. If your sword still hitting each other, take some time to observe your surrounding. This technique is as much about awareness as much as it is about sword skill. Let's see who got the least beat up sword by the end of the day!" Rei chuckled as she threw a little challenge to the students, just to stroke some competitiveness and give them an observable measurement of their progress.

Another figure came into their training ground. Rei's ears perked up when she overheard the tanuki girl who had been talking in a funny way was looking for Yukan. She gave the villagers an order to take a break before she approached the newcomer.

"Boss sure is popular, eh? Don't worry Okami, I will help our guest here. I'm already an expert at guiding people to the boss. Take rein of the villagers, they might get lazy if no one watch them." She said confidently to Okami before shifting her attention to Tomomi.

"Come with me, Ms Steve Irwin. My Yukan-sense is telling me the boss is somewhere with one or two beautiful woman. Last time was a nun, but this time is probably different." Rei put her hands next to her horns as if she was trying to catch some psychic signal with it. Then she beckoned to Tomomi to follow her to the village hall. They probably can find Yukan there.

"Mind telling me your relation with Boss Yukan?" Rei asked the tanuki girl along the way. "I'm Rei, Boss' left hand during our mission in this village."

Kota folded his arms and just smirked, “that's impressive, i can see why you would be motivated. Training individuals and providing them with the tools to succeed on short notice isn’t an easy feat. I'm truly impressed.” His tails would swoosh from side to side in excitement, working around people who have lessons to offer was always exciting.

Okami’s mentioning of changing the republic would only motivate the beastman even more. It felt strange how Okami was not from this world but she carried herself like a proud beastkin warrior. This was only their second time meeting yet it felt like they’ve known each other for much longer.

“You’re right, the republic as it is right now is no good. As a nation we are fractured and selfish. Change is necessary.”

Their conversation would be cut short, duty called when two beastkin approached asking for assistance. Though before Kota could assist, a 3rd beast, a Tanuki, would arrive though it seemed with other intentions, her first sentence left Kota stunned. He had brushed the ears atop his head for a second, checking to see if he misheard her. However, gauging from Okami just ignoring her and moving onto her duties, what she said truly came from her mouth.

“I’d prefer Kitsune if you must…Irwin. I’d like to believe I’m not shabby, either. My name is Kota…did you say you were blessed by a demon?” the pandas name was awkwardly familiar to one from his previous world. As he spoke he’d utilize his [Sixth Sense F] to treat the legitimacy of this question. If it was true then there was a problem, if not then they’re just dealing with an asshole. Also, weren’t they about to go and fight against a cult? This individual just seemed really strange as whole.

“Well Irwin, are you able to turn the truth a bit down? Someone might take offense to what you say.” Kota pondered, Okami is a lethal warrior at heart and has spilled a lot of blood, but she is woman. What if she felt offended about Steve’s comments but decided to hold it in. Whenever a negative comment was made about a woman's appearance and silence followed, it was never a good thing.

“Perhaps you should apologize to her.” smiled nervously, the kitsunes tails would slump slightly and his eyes darted to and from Okamis blade and Steve’s eyes, before turning to the fox warrior.

“Oh! Yes! I almost forgot!” smiled, happy that this young pupil needed instruction. “The reason why you might be having trouble standing upright could be weight distribution.” Kota would drop into his fighting stance. “You want your knees bent, shoulders squared, and your guard up always.” would smile, “this is a good basis for giving you the best chance to recover from attacks that may knock you off balance though this is only the first step truly.” He’d just his position as he looked over to the fox.

“This is simply the first step, a skilled opponent will still be able to knock you off balance. Perhaps using a specific combination of strikes to make you position yourself in a certain way, or even waiting for you to shift your body when you attack and knocking you off balance at a key moment. Improving your strength, agility, footwork, and awareness is key along with spacing. Let’s go through the motions so that you understand.” Kota grinned, as nostalgia of being within this fox’s position crept in. He’d watch as the lengthy fox got into his own stance, taking into account what he said. His guard was full of gaps but some minor adjustments would help. Kota use his own feet, sliding the foxes foot over into the proper footing.

He would then grab his arms and adjust them appropriately so that his face was guarded. “Now that you have proper form we’re going to practice moving around. Maintain your balance and keep good distance between us. Get your body acclimated to your stance.” Kota would test the beasts reactions to his movements, moving forward and backwards and even sideways. “Keep your eyes on me, never take your eyes off your opponent.” As he noticed the fox becoming more comfortable with his stance, Kota would decide to mix it up, throwing in gentle strikes aiming to test his defenses and how he reacted. Increasing the difficulty with each strike.

“Focus on maintaining your balance, utilize your footwork and spacing!”

Kota kept an ear out for Okami and Rei when they spoke to Steve. Thankfully the situation seemed to be resolved with Rei guiding her away towards Yukan. Hopefully she’d interact with Yukan in a much more respectful manner. However, that left Kota and Okami in charge of the large class a bit prematurely.

“Guess it’s our turn to instruct while Unagishi is occupied.”

1) The Shrine – Yukan, Mathias, Himiko, and the Panda Priest

A swirl of incense continues to drift in the shrine courtyard as Yukan and Mathias face the ominous panda priest. Himiko stands slightly behind them, her tail swishing with barely concealed nervousness.

The Priest’s Initial Response to Yukan

Panda Priest
Panda Priest.jpg

The panda priest’s crimson-tinged ribbons flutter ominously as he regards Yukan’s respectful bow.

Panda Priest (tone low, measured): “At least one of you knows the courtesy of sacred ground.”

He taps his staff on the floor, a faint spark of red dancing around it.

Panda Priest: “You seek to discover magical potential among Taeko’s children, yes? A selfless act, or so you claim. For that, I might lend my aid—if you can prove your worth.”

He narrows his eyes, glancing from Yukan to Mathias.

Panda Priest: “But first, you must understand: I do not idly place trust in outsiders. Especially not ones who consort with… humans.”

He spits the last word as though it tastes bitter. His gaze fixes on Yukan.

Panda Priest (challenging): “You, beastkin—why do you travel alongside a man of the hairless kind? Have you forgotten your pride? Our land’s history is stained with their betrayal!”

There’s venom in his tone, though whether it’s personal or cultural isn’t entirely clear.

Turning to Mathias’ Confrontational Stance

The priest’s staff scrapes across the ground with a low hiss when he faces Mathias. Despite Yukan’s polite bow, the human’s posture—hand on a holstered weapon—elicits a scowl.

Panda Priest (voice deepening): “You’d draw a gun on holy ground? Or do you think you can frighten me with that toy?”

A faint surge of energy crackles around his staff. The red glow intensifies, causing the charms to dance and clink.

Panda Priest: “I have exorcised demons from the netherworld and sealed abominations in the shadow realms, child. If your resolve is to bare teeth at me, then we have nothing more to discuss.”

He shifts, adopting a stance of his own—a curious mixture of priestly poise and martial readiness.

Panda Priest (raising his staff slightly): “Prove yourselves worthy, or leave. I will not be trifled with.”

Himiko
Himiko1.png

Himiko stands slightly behind Yukan, her ears lowered and tail swaying with palpable unease. Though she tries to maintain composure, a hint of a quiver in her voice betrays her concern:

Himiko (speaking softly to Yukan, but audible enough for Mathias): “He’s, um... more intense than I anticipated. Are you both sure about this?”

She hesitates, glancing from the priest’s crackling staff to Mathias’ clenched posture.

Himiko (lowering her voice further): “They say his wards can banish evil spirits—or worse. Please... stay calm. I don’t want to see either of you hurt.”

Her brown ears flick toward Mathias, a subtle look of worry crossing her features. Despite her interest in his weapon and his origins, she seems genuinely more concerned about peace than spectacle.

Presenting the Challenge

His staff descends with a resounding thump.

Panda Priest: “I have a trial for you. Complete it, and I will accompany you to your village. I will test the children’s potential, and teach what I deem necessary. But fail, and you will leave this shrine in shame.”

He regards Yukan’s determined expression:

Panda Priest (to Yukan): “If you accept, you place yourself and this human in my hands. Your fates, for the moment, are mine to decide. Still willing, Tanuki?”

His lips curl into that predatory smirk again, waiting to hear if Yukan— and Mathias— will stand firm or falter.

2) The Training Grounds – Okami, Kota, Neco-Arc, “Steve Irwin,” and the Villagers

A short distance away from the village proper, the makeshift training field bustles with activity. Villagers practice footwork drills, guided by Okami and Kota, while Rei prepares to escort Tomomi (who introduced herself as “Steve Irwin”) off to supposedly find Yukan.

Neco-Arc’s... Commentary?

Neco-Arc
La Creatura 3.jpg

As Tomomi mentions her name—Steve Irwin—Neco-Arc nearly spits with laughter. It scrambles on top of a barrel, flipping open a small “script” as though reading from an invisible stage direction.

Neco-Arc (stage voice): “Stop! You violated the law—er, the laws of common sense! A Steve Irwin in the Republic? The censors will never believe it!”

It tosses the script away dramatically, bounding down to land near the newcomer.

Neco-Arc (hands on hips, wide grin): “You’re not here to wrestle gators, are you? Because if so, you’ll want the swamp region to the east. I’m told the frogs there are quite fierce—like, ribbit-of-death fierce.”

One or two villagers nearby blink in confusion at the mention of gators and frogs, clearly uncertain if Neco-Arc’s references mean anything. But the comedic tension lingers.

[Kota's usage of [Sixth Sense F] + [Insight F] on Steve Irwin returns no information. If there is nothing to be glanced at, or if his current skills are unable to glance at anything extra, it isn't clear.]

Villager Training Continues

A steady rhythm of clacking wooden poles and panting breath fills the training grounds. The villagers—some armed with repurposed farm tools, others with crude wooden swords—try to follow Okami and Kota’s demonstrations. Neco-Arc occasionally hops around, spouting nonsensical “martial wisdom” that keeps spirits high.

Badger Villager’s Woes

Badger Villager (struggling but determined): “This is... tough. I've farmed my whole life, and I’ve never felt so clumsy! My arms feel like they're on fire.”

He lowers his hoe-turned-sword momentarily, letting out a wheezing exhale.

Badger Villager (looking at Okami with a hint of awe): “How long did it take you to build that kind of stamina? You’re moving like it’s as easy as breathing...”

He seems torn between pride at even attempting sword drills and frustration at his sluggish progress. If Okami or Kota offers advice on building endurance, he’ll listen intently, nodding vigorously.

Fox Boy’s Fears

Fox Boy (wiping sweat from his brow): “Lady Okami, Kota, I—”

His voice wavers with a mix of excitement and anxiety.

Fox Boy: “I’m scared I’ll choke when real danger comes. Those cultists... they almost took my cousin. What if I freeze up in a real fight?”

He glances around at the other villagers, ears drooping as though embarrassed to admit his fear. If Kota offers him reassurance, he’ll try to stand straighter, though his trembling tail betrays his nerves.

Other Villagers’ Reactions

  • Older Goat Woman (grimacing as she holds a wooden staff):
“I haven’t held anything more lethal than a broom in years. If the cultists return, I just... I want to be sure I can protect my grandchildren. That’s all.”
She shifts her stance awkwardly but forces a determined look, silently asking for correction.
  • Young Raccoon Girl (eyes shining):
“I always wanted to be a warrior! They told me I was too small, too weak. But if you think I can do it, then I’ll try my hardest!”
She nearly trips over her own feet but quickly bounces back, looking to Okami or Kota for a nod of approval.
Throughout, Neco-Arc prances by with random “motivational” lines:

Neco-Arc (shouting in a sing-song voice): “Remember! A tired warrior is an easy target—so if you’re tired, don’t be a warrior!”

One or two villagers laugh, though it’s unclear if they actually glean any wisdom from the feline’s nonsense.

Each villager looks for guidance and reassurance in their own way. Some crave a gentle correction and moral support, while others respond better to strict, no-nonsense direction. With each passing minute, they grow just a bit more confident under Okami and Kota’s tutelage, forging the foundation of Taeko’s budding militia.

3) The Watch Tower – Vincent and the Cat-Woman

Sunlight glints on the half-finished wooden structure. Tools and lumber lie around haphazardly. The new bell Vincent crafted rests in his arms, ready to be installed.

Awkward Assistance

The cat-woman, still flustered from the earlier moment with the canine beastkin, holds the ladder for Vincent. She does her best to seem composed, though her flushed cheeks betray her embarrassment.

Cat-Woman (speaking quietly): “I-I’m sorry if we were in your way, sir. We—we didn’t mean… to, um… slack off or anything. It’s just…”

She glances away, ears twitching, then refocuses on Vincent’s work.

Cat-Woman: “That bell… you made it yourself, right? I never really thought about how important a bell could be, but with all that’s happened, it’s… good to have.”

She offers to pass nails or rope if Vincent needs them, but remains somewhat timid. If Vincent pushes her to talk more, she might confide a bit about her personal situation—how the beastkin she was with is leaving soon for extended guard duty, etc. Otherwise, she’ll keep interactions minimal while helping secure the bell.

Once the bell is hoisted into place, its metal gleams in the sun. A test ding echoes across the farmland, letting the villagers know the tower’s near completion.

If Okami had heard some sarcasm, it was likely due to her own preconceptions, as Tomomi had been cheerful and 'honest' sounding regardless of how she was forced to twist her own words. Being walked straight past, she was (and looked) actually a tad sad, as she realised she missed her ability to openly compliment people more than she'd done so in a while. Then again, being ignored was common due to her unique condition, so she couldn't blame folk.

It's why she sheered up all the more, ears perking up and tail giving a happy twitch, when Kota did try to at least talk with her. “Yes, just like how you are undeniably a charming feline lady, I am blessed by a demon to speak the truth.” She'd state, hoping to make her situation as obvious as she possibly could with those two phrases. After all, he seemed to be at least slightly interested in figuring this one out. Perhaps, with some luck, he actually would.

She'd love to confirm that he was far from shabby, but alas, that'd be the truth. The next question was difficult. Was she able to keep the truth down a bit? She could stop speaking altogether, but she was talkative by nature and she felt a burning itch to speak up about things if she'd remain silent for too long. Either part of the curse or just her inability to keep her mouth shut for long. It seemed her only way forwards was to lie once more. “I am fully capable of controlling the truth.” That was the most 'lie' it could get in that regard. As for people taking offence, she'd continue... “I am sure they are all perfectly understanding.” Hopefully that'd make one think if they were missing something. Or not.

As for apologising to Okami, she felt genuinely bad, which made he answer all the more painful to spill across her lips. “I don't have the least bit of a desire to do so.” Yeah, that one hurt. What a shame.

To make matters worse, it seemed Okami did return to put in some words after all. “That's great news! Yes, I am sure he is.” Of course that wasn't great news and of course wasn't. Of course she head to repeat the insults. She really badly wanted to apologise and say she'd meant to opposite... then she bit her tongue to try to at least remain silent... yet out it came. “That you are.” By the divines, she really couldn't even abstain from confirming the lie. At the very least she didn't look like she was having fun whilst doing so, for whatever that much was worth. If anything, she was clearly struggling at this point.

“I'm glad to hear that you are brutally forced to be training here.” She wasn't even sure what else to say to Okami, as she decided to bite her tongue in order to abstain from bouncing back with the remark that everyone would indeed try to stop her if she were to walk off. In a worst case scenario, they actually might.

Finally, the third, was that one in a hundred people who either understood or just didn't care. A silent tear of joy fell from her eye when Rei seemed to be totally down to just go with the flow. “I'm sure he's indeed as unpopular as he's always been.” She really hoped Rei wasn't going to be a one-off when it came to being chill.

The next bit made her ears twitch. Her brother, a womanizer? The one that'd seeming turned more stern and serious with very single year that passed? That brother, a womanizer? He must be trying to secure the family line wouldn't end with him or something. That was the only thing that might explain it. Wait... A nun!?! Bloody hell. It seemed her brother was up to even more antics than she'd been able to ever imagine. “He surely sounds like he's been very solitary.” She mumbled, wondering if Rei was just pulling her tail.

As for her relation with Yukan? “We're utterly unrelated strangers.” That one was obvious. Upon hearing Lei call herself 'Boss' left hand, she looked her up and over again once more. How peculiar. She wondered who the 'right' hand would be in that case. Maybe the Human woman from before? Or the Kitsune? “It's horrible to meet you, right hand of a stranger.” She'd give a polite bow at the return introduction.

Before she and Rei could head off, however, the cat creature pulled some antics. “Indeed, I'm a horrible criminal.” She replied when she was told she violated the law, hoping that nobody would actually believe that one. Her track record was squeaky clean, save for one unfortunate lie. “I would love to wrestle all the gators.” What in the world was a gator? Some type of obscure fellow [Beast] folk she never heard of? “A swamp sounds lovely this time of year.” She'd reply, thinking about how badly she'd not want to be in a swamp.

She'd sigh, looking at Rei, hoping the latter would get a move on. “Let's stay here, I'll lead the way.” Ah. She should've probably just kept her mouth shut, as she wasn't sure if this would progress Rei moving out and leading her to Yukan more than it might hinder them. She'd just... gesture for Rei to go first. At lest she could mostly gesture truthfully. Mostly. Even this gave her an annoying itch that normally suggested she was on thin ice.

The Tower

She mediates

Vince was no stranger to chatter. But he found himself becoming at the cat-woman's annoyance. Yet it wasn't in a way that he'd tell her to go away. As she floundered over her words -- he merely raised a brow, at her giving her opportunity to get her words in.....only for her to flounder and change the subject within a moment's notice. Sighing for a moment, Vince speaks.

"Thanks." Vincent says, taking some nails as he starts hammering in a ring through a hole set to hold the bell in place.

"Honestly I'm surprised you guys didn't have one sooner. I get you guys are busy but gaw-lee! Someone's gotta defend you -- be it guards or you doing it yourselves." He said, shrugging.

While not usually one to pry, Vince felt it coming at odds with his compulsion to try to help people, even strangers. Hell, that was the whole reason he was here or at least that's what he thought. The job had been mostly done, and he could have just walked away, collected his cash, and have been well on his way to setting up his shop or netting a mine for some ores. Yet here, it felt as though there was more that could be done.

One was installing this bell so that Taeko could have an alarm to rally people. And another was helping this woman with whatever troubled her.

"But, you already know all of that. If you weren't slackin' off, what were you doing? You seem like you got something you wanna clear up. Am I right? Don't trip over your words this time. Speak plain and just keep handin' me what I say." Since he wasn't by himself, Vince took a moment.

Within a moment, Vince scooted back down the latter and placed his toolbox at her feet. It was a little bit safer and less cumbersome that way.

"And finally either be honest or don't tell me at all. Whatever this is seems to be botherin' you though. So should talk to someone about it." He let his words hang in the air, asking yet ultimately giving her a choice. He could only wonder what bit of drama was brewing in the air between the two unless, she decided to tell him. It could be something serious as an affair or innocuous as trying to interpret a sign of love.

Big or small, however, everyone suffers. Vince was ready to hear just about anything. Or so he'd thought.

"So it is," she replied to Kota.

Okami found this to be a surprisingly enjoyable morning.

Well, mostly. That "Steve" fellow's words continued to be as annoying as they were vapid, but the wolf simply decided not to pay them any mind and to just focus on the task at hand. Hearing Kota stick up for her put a smile on her face. And seeing the people take up impromptu arms and commit to training only elevated her mood even more. But, not long after they began, her dance partner's stamina began to wane; wheezing as he fought to bring the air back into his lungs and letting his weapon hang low.

She lowered her own, in turn, as she listened to the badger's words.

"That's... a good question, actually."

A long pause as Okami... genuinely thought about it.

"I don't know. I can't remember when I first took up a weapon. I was raised by my master. My hands were already callused in my earliest memories. I think I already understood the fundamentals as well. I guess you could say that I was raised to wield a sword. I didn't have the stamina I do today, but I never found issue keeping up with my opponents."

Another pause followed what might've been the most disheartening words that her dance partner could've possibly heard. But it wasn't her story that the man needed to hear in that moment.

"I was not my master's final student, however. Many came to seek his knowledge and his wisdom in the art of war. Some young. Some, likely older than yourself. Some, mere babes, who were left to his care. They likely have as little memory of their first bokken as I do. Most of them were able to become fine warriors in time. Some more quickly than others. But it does take time. You will not become a fine warrior within a week."

Okami readied her practice weapon once more. Not to rush him, but show him that he was ready to continue once he'd caught his breath.

"But, if you stick to it, you will feel and see the change within yourself. And the joy you'll feel when you finally make tangible progress? It'll motivate you to continue, without the aid of anyone else. It does get easier. But you must overcome the first hurdle before it does. Feel no shame in what you do here. All warriors struggle when they take up their first weapon. All warriors begin weak. This is universal."

She glanced over at her "shabby companion" for a moment. If and when her students were ready to continue, so too would their drills.

"Hey, Kota? Do you have any memories of when you first curled your hand into a fist and decided to hone it into a weapon? What was it like for you back then?"

Languages: "Common", "<Beastial>"

Yukan heard the panda priest out and had to stop himself from letting out an audible sound of indignation when he realized what Mathias was doing on shrine grounds. This was not a good first impression, not to mention Yukan didn't even know the guy and he was already even if not his fault exactly, causing problems for the operation of getting a magic user who would be willing to come check out the potential.

He maintained his upright stance, not yielding or showing submissive body language even as the priest sounded displeased. Yukan then heard Himiko speak up, "There Is no need for concern about me, I came here to fulfill a mission and that mission I will fulfill even if it means discomfort here and now for the greater good." He said plainly and softly back to her.

Yukan listened to the priest more before he responded in beastial,

"<The human does not understand our ways and for that I apologize on his behalf. He volunteered to be of assistance and wished to come with me here, he is not someone who I have a close connection too, but he was adamant of wishing to help the people of Taeko Village, I for one can say as someone who fought on the battlefield against the East Empire myself, I am someone who is wary of humans as well but some of them have proven themselves to be good people, one of them joined me and fought along side me valiantly, never faltering or retreating against our enemy, helping to protect myself and others even when the odds were stacked against us ,and for that reason alone, I do not think it is unreasonable to allow them to prove themselves human or not.>"

He spoke seriously, keeping his eyes focused on the priest, before looking to the human,

"Mathias, I am going to warn you now that this challenge may very well be dangerous beyond what you were thinking coming here, this is your opportunity to step out if you wish to reconsider, regardless of your choice, I will see this challenge through."

He the looked back to the priest, and gave a bt of a bow, with his Etiquette Skill

"I accept your challenge, if it is not my words which will convince you, then my actions will." Yukan spoke once again, not faltering.

Rei Unagishi

Rei scratched her head as she tried to interpret Tomomi's twisted replies. She understood that the tanuki meant the opposite of her words but she would need a bit of time to process everything she said. Not the most ideal condition to strike a conversation, but she would manage somehow, hopefully.

"Don't worry, not only boss has great taste, he also has a strong sense of duty. I'm sure he will take responsibility for every one of them." Rei nodded at her own words as she lead the tanuki to the village hall. Looking around, she didn't find Yukan so she called the other figure that likely knows his whereabout.

"Elder Yoshiro!?" She waved her hand towards the goat beastkin before approaching him.

"Have you seen boss Yukan? He has another visitor looking for him." She pointed at Tomomi.

Kotas wouldn’t gather much when it came to determining if Steve was possessed by a demon or not. However he’d learn something else based on her next response, that she was trolling him.

“Haha very funny calling me a lady.” He said sarcastically while shrugging. She would end up replying to Okami, not with an apology but with salt being further rubbed into the wound. The kitsune groaned as Steve double downed, her manner of talking becoming all the more peculiar. Kota could feel his brain working overtime as he tried to understand what was going through this Tanuki head.

“I’m not sure what you are getting at here Steve but, we’re pretty busy at work here. There’s an incoming threat we are preparing, I apologize but I must return to teaching.” Kota responded, doing his best to dust his hands with the situation.

He’d affix his attention on the question posed, walking up to the fox with a straight look. “Your worries are understandable, it’s natural to have your fears about battle. How you overcome that is through training and repetition. Practice makes perfect, that’s why it’s important to train hard because it will correlate to how you perform when it’s the real deal.” Kota nodded his head, walking from side to side. “They nearly took your cousin but they didn’t, he’s still here with us and that’s all you need to think about. Unnecessary thoughts need to be cast aside and your focus locked on the objective. Keep training hard and your doubts will shrink.”

He understood the anxiety, the fear, war is unpredictable and brutal. A shiver went up his spine when he recalled how he almost lost his life alongside Okami and Yukan. How helpless it felt, if it weren’t for Petrien he wouldn’t be here right now. Okamis question would break the thoughts running through Kota’s head.

“My first punch, yikes. I remember it was at the dojo in my village. I was a pretty small beast at the time when I took up martial arts. My sensei at the time had the young kids practicing throwing some punches and kicks at a dummy. A simple straight punch was first and man did I wiff it, ended up stepping on my tail and flying head first into the dummy. Had the whole class laughing at me, I wasn’t a fan of that so I got pretty pissed to the point of nearly crying. So I stood back up, planted my feet into the ground, and threw the hardest punch I could. The sound of my hand connecting with the dummy shut everyone up, but boy was my wrist hurting after.” He’d laugh, one ear drooping slightly in embarrassment “I had wanted to quit but I kept going out of ego, I felt the need to prove everyone wrong.”

His reasons in the beginning made him shake his head in embarrassment. Even after coming to this world from his old one he behaved immaturely.

“The more I trained, the more I strayed away from that being what fueled me. I became enamored by what I was able to accomplish with just my body alone, wanting to be the best version of myself. I was born with everything that I needed to survive within this world and chase my goals.”

Reflecting on the past made him realize he had come a long way from the person he once was. He recalls what it was like being in this beast's shoes, they must not have been all that far apart in age either. Having a initial negative intersection would naturally set anyone off on the wrong first.

1) The Shrine – Yukan, Mathias (Absent), Himiko, and the Panda Priest

A stillness settles over the shrine courtyard. The red accents on the Panda Priest’s robes shimmer ominously, reflecting his rising hostility. Yukan’s measured apology in beastial does little to stem the bristling aura around the priest.

Panda Priest’s Growing Disdain

Panda Priest
Panda Priest.jpg

The priest’s black and white fur ruffles along his neck as he flicks his round ears forward in a show of aggression. He glances once more at Mathias—who stands somewhat silently off to the side—and snorts in derision.

Panda Priest (speaking in Beastial, sharp tone): “<Look at him—clutching that weapon but saying nothing. One who does not speak is either a fool or a coward. Which is he, Tanuki?>”

He shifts his staff, its talismans rattling with a haunting clatter.

Panda Priest: “<Your loyalty to him is puzzling. Humans who truly wish to atone for their kind’s sins step forward in humility, not loiter at the edge of a conversation as if they might flee at any moment. If your ‘ally’ won’t even defend himself with words or action, I question the worth of bringing him along.>”

Himiko
Himiko1.png

Himiko observes this exchange anxiously. She can’t fully follow every scathing word in Beastial, but the priest’s hostility is palpable. A faint shiver escapes her.

Himiko (leaning closer to Yukan, whispering in common tongue): “H-he seems… angrier now. Are you sure we shouldn’t—?”

She falls silent under the priest’s glare.

Issuing the Challenge

With a dramatic thump of his staff, the Panda Priest turns back to Yukan. His tone softens only slightly, replaced by a cold finality:

Panda Priest
Panda Priest.jpg

Panda Priest (in Beastial, for Yukan’s sake): “<You seek to bring me to your village, to teach magic and reveal potential among your people. Very well, then. But first, you must pass my trial.>”

He points the staff at Yukan, the red glow shifting to a faint pulse around Yukan’s feet.

Panda Priest: “<In the eastern woods lies a hidden cave. Within it sleeps a restless spirit, a guardian once sacred to this shrine but corrupted by outsiders’ influence. Bring me proof you’ve subdued it—return with the spirit’s binding stone, and I shall deem you worthy.>”

His eyes flicker with grim satisfaction.

Panda Priest: “<Be warned: it may not be alone. And if your ‘human’ friend is too timid to speak, how will he fight for your cause?>”

He taps his staff once more, the energy dissipating from around Yukan. The challenge is clear—and the priest has all but declared that Mathias’ silence is a sign of cowardice.

Himiko’s Concern

Himiko’s ears flatten further as she listens, gleaning enough from the priest’s gestures to understand a serious task has been given.

Himiko
Himiko1.png

Himiko (softly, in common to Yukan): “A corrupted shrine spirit? This might be more dangerous than I thought… Should—should we gather help from your friends in Taeko?”

Her eyes dart between Yukan and Mathias, clearly worried about how they’ll proceed. The priest simply waits, staff planted, a challenge in his gaze that demands an answer.

2) The Training Grounds – Okami, Kota, Villagers

Breathes heavily as Okami explains the universal struggle of new warriors. Though her story of lifelong training might feel unreachable, her humility in describing how everyone starts weak sparks a tiny ember of hope.
Badger Villager (face brightening): “I—I see. Thank you, Lady Okami. I won’t give up!”
He raises his makeshift hoe-sword once more, adopting a stance closer to what she showed him.
  • Fox Boy
Listens intently to Kota’s story about humiliating himself with a first punch. The anecdote draws a hesitant grin.
Fox Boy (eyes shining): “You tripped over your own tail? Heh... if someone with your skill was once as clumsy as me, maybe there’s hope.”
He tries a slow combination of steps and half-swings, occasionally stumbling, but picks himself up determinedly each time.
  • Older Goat Woman
Appears to watch from the sidelines, staff in hand. After seeing Okami and Kota’s gentle (yet firm) instruction, she approaches with a resolute nod.
Older Goat Woman: “Your lessons are clear. If I can swing a broom, I can swing a staff. I’ll make sure my grandchildren don’t grow up afraid.”
  • Young Raccoon Girl
Practically bounces on her feet, brimming with eagerness.
Young Raccoon Girl: “Miss Okami! Mister Kota! Look—I can do the stance just like you said!”
She mimics the posture meticulously, though her short arms make the practice sword look oversized.
All around, the training yard’s atmosphere grows more confident, albeit tinged with the realism that true combat will be far harsher than these drills.

3) Neco-Arc’s Distraction and Departure

High on its self-appointed role of “heroic instructor,” Neco-Arc roams through the lines of practicing villagers, occasionally shouting commands like:

Neco-Arc
La Creatura 3.jpg

Neco-Arc: “HYAAAAH! Keep your elbows in, or they’ll fly away with the crows!”

A few villagers giggle; others ignore it, focusing on Okami and Kota. Then its oversized ears perk, catching a snippet of conversation from Rei and Tomomi.

Neco-Arc (suddenly bounding over): “Nyahaha! You two, hold up! I smell mischief—and it’s not me for once!”

Upon hearing mention that they’re heading off to find Yukan, Neco-Arc gasps dramatically:

Neco-Arc (raising a tiny paw): “A clandestine journey? A hidden plot? Perfect for a cameo scene change!”

It claps its mitts together, giving a playful wink to Okami and Kota as if to say, “I’ll see you later!” Then it darts off to join Rei and Tomomi (or “Steve Irwin”) on their path, presumably adding more comedic chaos to their search for Yukan.

4) Rei and Tomomi’s Search for Yukan

Rei leads Tomomi through the bustling village lanes. A few villagers wave at Rei in recognition of her heroics, though they eye Tomomi curiously after overhearing her bizarre statements. The mention of “Steve Irwin” further confuses some.

Meeting Elder Yoshiro

Elder Yoshiro, along with a couple of other aged beastkin, stands near the village hall, discussing supply logistics for the upcoming fortifications. At Rei’s beckoning, he inclines his goat-like head calmly.

Elder Yoshiro
Yoshiro2.jpg

Elder Yoshiro (smiling wearily): “Lady Rei. Another visitor? Taeko has never seen so many guests in such a short time.”

He peers politely at Tomomi, stroking his beard as he waits for an introduction.

Neco-Arc bursts on the scene right about now, comedic timing on point.

Neco-Arc
La Creatura 2.png

Neco-Arc (pointing at Tomomi): “Fear not, puny mortal—I, Neco-Arc, will help you track down the elusive Yukan!”

It flips through an imaginary script with mock seriousness.

“Let’s see: Scene 10, cameo with goat elder. Perfect.

Elder Yoshiro arches an eyebrow, having long since grown accustomed to the feline’s antics.

Elder Yoshiro
Yoshiro2.jpg

Elder Yoshiro (tone mild): “Yukan departed with another newcomer—Mathias, was it?—earlier this morning. They went off with a fox named Himiko, presumably toward the shrine in the eastern hills.”

He gestures eastward.

“Though, they’ve been gone for some time. Is it urgent? If so, I’m afraid you’ll have to follow their trail.”

If Tomomi truly wants to reach Yukan, traveling to that distant shrine might be the next step. But with Neco-Arc tagging along, the journey is sure to be anything but dull.

5) Vincent and the Cat-Woman at the Watch Tower

The cat-woman fidgets, still rattled by having been caught in a private moment. After Vincent suggests she speak plainly or remain silent, she exhales shakily.

Cat-Woman (handing him the last nail): “I-it’s not... drama, exactly. It’s just... My friend, the one you saw, is due to head out on a hunting mission soon. We... wanted some time alone before then.”

She blushes furiously, ears flattening.

Cat-Woman: “But that’s no excuse. The tower needs finishing, and we should’ve shown more respect. Sorry... Thank you for not telling anyone else.”

With that small confession aired, the tension eases slightly. The new bell hangs securely, and the watch tower stands closer to readiness should any threat appear.

She looked at Kota with a questioning look. Funny? Was the dude that dense? Did he think she was just joking? Bloody hell, take a hint. “My comedy is unrivalled, yet my statement was true. You are a lady.” She'd reply, wondering if that would make something sink in. Or not. “I'm glad to hear that you've got time to laze around and that peace will be upon us. Good luck studying.” She'd bow him goodbye to go follow Rei.

To Tomomi's surprise, they were joined by another. “Our journeys are most clandestine, or plots most hidden.” She'd reply to Neco-Arc. “I know exactly what you mean by cameo scene changes, oh magnificently beautiful creature.” She'd reply to the odd cat-like thing. She really wondered what in the world a cameo scene change was. Perhaps a theatre thing? “Say, gorgeous creature, truly you must be blood-related to this Yukan?” She asked, hoping to get some more information on Neko-Arc whilst hinting at her own relation to him. Catching two truths in one lie. Hopefully.

Tomomi was glad that Rei was indeed staying 'on board' with her, being what she was. If anything, it made her want to be even more talkative. Sadly enough, her chatting partner seemed to be less talkative. Other than mentioning that her brother was apparently building himself a harem the 'responsible' manner. “I'm sure his taste is the absolute worst, if the woman from a bit ago is anything to go by.” She'd nod, having to admit that even she was dazzled by those looks at first sight.

That said, as they were going, something started to bug her a bit. “You are clearly of the Beast race, are you not?” She'd ask, her way of asking Rei if she was correct in noticing that Rei was, in fact, not a Beast at all, despite looking a fair bit like one of them.

“Oh, how I love meeting younglings.” She'd sigh, upon hearing Rei call out of some Elder. Those were the worst to deal with during her Geisha training. By far. So ugly. So wrinkly. So slow. So old-fashioned. So boring. She was already hoping they could get this over with quickly.

She bit her tongue as she wanted to deny that she was a visitor from the get-go. Perhaps she should struggle a bit more when it came to respecting the Elderly. “A true honour, oh great and mighty Neco-Arc.” At least lying to the cat-like being was as easy as cutting through melted butter.

“A castle in the northern valley.” She'd nod, as she heard the Elder's response, regarding Yukan being at a shrine on the eastern hills. When he questioned if it was urgent, a slight smile crept upon her face. It totally wasn't urgent, but she felt like it might a well be. Finally a useful lie to tell. “It is of the utmost urgency.” She'd state with a smile. “It's been nice meeting someone as young and vibrant as you, mister Yoshiro.” She's state with a polite smile and a bow.

Then she'd start heading to the eastern hills. “To the western farm in the swamp we shall go.” She'd nod to herself. Or to Neco-Arc. Come to think of it, she should be careful not to start actually thinking well of the creature, or her lies might turn into truths. It was, at the very least, pretty mysterious in its odd antics. Then again, she'd put in some pace. After all, she was getting curious about this 'harem' that her brother had apparently surrounded himself with. That and she just wanted to meet up again. It'd be a while. With some luck he'd at least figure her out, though, as she hadn't really told anyone in the family.

"It's fascinating to think about. Fine tuning one's body like that. I find myself questioning just how far I'd have made it without a weapon." The wolf replied to Kota with a laugh.

"Where I come from, the idea of waging war with one's fist was considered madness. Impossible, even! And if I'd taken that same path? Only the gods could know just how many swords I've broken in my time. Some of the sturdiest blades, available, too. If I'd been gallivanting about trying to slay my enemies with my knuckles alone, I surely would've die-"

Okami paused for a moment as the words slipped through her lips. She recalled the conversation that she and her comrades had held beneath the earth after the The Battle of Fort Bury. The reason why she was even here in this world in the first place. The irony hit her like a tonne of bricks. A light sigh followed. And her vibrant smile slowly shifted to a more somber one.

"Well... perhaps it wouldn't have made any difference at all. Would it?"

Of course, it was easy for two people to hear the same words and come to vastly different interpretations. The Ronin and The Martial Artist had walked different roads and experienced vastly different things in the days that came and went before reuniting here in Taeko. Okami's words would likely stir far more recent memories in Kota's mind considering the things he'd seen on his road.

Things that Okami was blissfully unaware of.

"It is very impressive, to say the least."

Okami enjoyed this moment of just relaxing with Kota. Perhaps, on another morning, she could've given him her full attention. Perhaps she could inquire about his adventures after that morning's training had come to an end. But the words that she'd shared with the badger had emboldened him, and his weapon rose once more. She would step forward until her own impromptu weapon met his at a neutral distance.

The training would resume.

"READY!" a call to action to get her pupils in line for the next bout, "BACK! BACK! FRONT! BACK!"

They were all still fairly terrible at the waltz of blades. About on part for folks who'd just begun to learn to fight. But their ambition held strong. And, really, that was the most important part in all of this. That was the part that would keep the waltz going long after The Wolf and her companions departed from this pleasant little town.

"<Don't mistake my willingness for allowing him to show me what he can do to assist reaching my goals as having my loyalty.>" Yukan spoke matter of fact.

"<My loyalty is something which is earned, and currently this human has not proven he has possesses the determination, the fighting spirit, in essence what it takes to go on further with me at this time.>" He added a bit coldly, not faltering in his serious expression and stance.

He heard Himiko whispering and felt it was unfortunate that she needed to see this unfold the way it was, but Yukan was far from one to back down from a challenge.

But he listened to what the challenge which the Panda priest had bestowed to him.

He'd then nod, "<You are correct to question his ability.>" Yukan then looked over to Mathias.

"Perhaps it's better that you continue to assist people in the village in your own way then assisting me with this matter, I do not know why you hold your tongue and clasp your weapon like it's a life line, but you should learn the etiquette required to traverse our nation if you plan on staying here.. in addition you do not appear ready to face the trials to come, if you value your life I'd advise you stand down."

Yukan spoke to the human matter of fact again, not exactly meaning offense but also not suggesting he was super impressed with what he'd seen so far. He didn't expect a beast's determination and will to fight on in a human, no Okami was someone who was special indeed. But that didn't mean he still wasn't open to trying.

He then looked to the priest again and gave a bow with Etiquette F

"<Very well I accept your challenge. I will purge the evil from this guardian spirit, and bring you its binding stone. Just as I told that Fae on the battlefield, I will not turn my back to my adversary.>" Yukan said with determination, standing up straight after.

Yukan then looked over to Himiko shaking his head, before returning speaking a bit more softly too but still firmly, "This is a challenge which has been issued to me personally, While your care is appreciated Himiko, I will take on this trial as he wishes. You need not worry yourself, it's far from my first time on the battlefield..and I do not intend on making it my last, for I am fighting for something much greater than myself." He spoke with conviction.

With that Yukan was ready to depart to the Eastern woods to find this cave.

The Tower

She mediates

As the thing was nearly done, the only thing that would have been on Vince's mind was erecting a wooden fence or wall good enough to keep out invaders.

Behind that, however, was an issue that might have been seen as small to some. Yet he couldn't help but feel at least a little bit bad for the flack he gave the cat-woman. All this went towards protecting people, so that they could not only live but potentially live out a better life than they would before. Little things like that made life worth living.

"Yeah. It's a bit of a conundrum. I'll give you that." Vince said, scratching his head. "But before that, you should be doing everything that needs doing. I can't say I'm a fan of mindlessly working, but I'd say this is important enough. Between you and me, if you're gonna sneak around like that, you should do it with things that aren't real important. Maybe sweeping up the floor can wait. But I'd say something for watching." He chuckled a bit. The advice seemed like something which could backfire as it left certain things to her own judgement. But Vince only really cared that important tasks were done. And could be prone to be more inclined to care less about more mundane busy-work.

"There's an old saying from the land I come from. It goes "work hard, play hard." I'd say that's what I'm telling you here, in a nutshell. Got it?" He said, as sliding down the ladder and hitting the ground hard.

"I dunno about you, but I'm interested in playing later. I got a wall to at least start on. But first." He wasn't sure if she was stationed up here. But Vince still found himself focusing on his work. But before he left, he felt the need to give the thing a test run.

DING DING

Simple. Old fashioned. A bell would make a good alarm system for the likes of Taeko. It didn't need any of the upkeep a lot of technology did.

"Seems to work like a charm."

Now most importantly was probably a Fence of some type. Something which would stop most people from getting in. From the tower, Vince surveyed just how much wood the village had on hand. He was curious if there was anything that might be seen.

"Ya know how much wood we have on hand at the village? Plan on trying to build a fence or a wall. Or at least, starting."

He asked the Cat-Woman before he'd leave, while also leaving at least a little bit of room for any lingering confessions or responses.

Kota smiled softly, the compliment boosting his ego. “To be honest I didn’t, I couldn’t imagine it either until I saw it for my own eyes. Fists strong enough to break steel, a body able to resist even the deadliest of blades, even some specialists are able to kill with just the spiritual pressure their body emits, no need to move a muscle, no mess.” Kota noted, the last bit of words referring to death hooked to the foxes mind as he looked a bit sullen.

“Perhaps…” his words faded out lightly, his mind taking him back to that moment that plagued the two. The silence grew louder, speaking a thousand words for the two of them, perhaps the wolf and badger might pick up on the silent tension between both of their tutors.

Okami would break the awkwardness, providing a parting compliment as she returned to training.

“Your words mean a lot to me.”

Words meant nothing in that life or death moment, only strength. Strength that he lacked. What’s the use of having strength if you can’t utilize it when it counts. he thought to himself

Kota craned his head back to the fox, pushing the looming thoughts back into the dark.

“Ready to get back to it?” Kota entered his stance as he prepared to go back into the motions. “We’re going to go fast now, watch me body, react to my movements, don’t assume.” His eyes were firm as he locked himself into the moment.

The Shrine.

Perhaps he indeed didn't have the need knowhow to adhere to these peoples customs. Mathias found, upon taking on a mental inventory, that he didn't really care for it. Something was edging him on, in the fringe of his mind, to help these people. He kept his hand hovering over his side arm, but relaxed his stance just a bit.

Turning to the Tanuki Man, he replied with a wry smile on his face. "In for a penny, in for a pound friend. Opa didn't raise a coward and I can almost certainly guarantee you I've lived through worse."

He shifted his glance back to the Priest and made a snap decision. Perhaps, sometimes, discretion was indeed the better part of valor. Lifting his hands clear of any weapons, he brought them together and bowed, stiffly, as the movement wasn't familiar to him. "Forgive my ignorance, honored one. I am indeed a foreigner here, not only to this land but this realm entirely. Where I hail, such a challenge is far less...formal, in a sense. Given I literally woke up in a forest yesterday, I am still adjusting. I meant no disrespect."

The words felt strange in his mouth, it wasn't often he was placating others given his past work, but it wasn't something he was entirely unfamiliar with.

Rei Unagishi

"The human think I'm a beastkin while the beastkin think I'm a human." Rei shrugged at Tomomi's question, seemingly recalling some unpleasant memories from the past. "It's kind of a pain the ass, really. Just treat me as whatever you like."

As the elder pointed them to the shrine east of the village, Rei bowed to the elder gratefully. She wasn't really sure how urgent of the business it would be with how Tomomi talks, but the urgency didn't really matter, she would still guide her to Boss Yukan anyway. With Neco-Arc tagging along, this started to feel like a mini adventuring party on its own. Rei nodded gleefully.

"Let's go meet the boss, to the east we go!"

Leading the small group out of the village, Rei followed whatever trail she could find to hopefully bump into Yukan and the gun guy, and this Himiko girl. Along the way she asked Tomomi a question that piqued her interest before but hadn't had any chance to ask.

"So, Ms. Steve Irwin, when you tell us about you were blessed by a demon, how many negatives are in that statement? Are you cursed by a demon? Or cursed by an angel?" She asked. "Just curious, we just defeated something that might be a demon yesterday."
